The PC 45 is first and foremost a state-of-the-art
corn stove. Its primary fuel is shelled corn. The
chassis is the Harman P61 pellet stove, a wellproven workhorse in the unmatched Harman
Stove Company line. The engine is specifically
designed for burning corn. If the customer
desires, a different burn pot that is designed for
burning pellets can be installed without tools.

Harman’s research showed that some form of
agitator was required in order to break the
40,000 BTU/hour threshold. Corn melts and fuses
as it burns, forming partially burned clinkers. If
the burning corn is agitated, these clinkers are
broken up to allow more complete burning.
The corn ash that is ejected into the ash pan by
the PC 45 is more completely burned than other
corn stoves.
Oyster shells or some other additive, are
not required.
The stove is supplied with two agitators, two
burn pots, and two end gates. Harman has found
that corn slag is hydrophilic in that it absorbs
moisture from the air when cool. This process
can be drastically accelerated by immersing the
parts in water. When corn slag buildup becomes
excessive, the stove can be shut down and the
encrusted components exchanged for clean
ones. This can be accomplished in a few minutes, and no tools are required.

The stove is designed to have the longest
between-cleaning interval in the industry.
While other stoves plug, clog, or go out in a
matter of hours or at best days, the PC 45 is
capable of burning for 1-2 weeks, depending
on the corn’s moisture content and physical
properties. In one real-world test, the stove
burned more than 50 days without attention
beyond emptying the ashes.
Auto-Ignition
The PC 45 is the first practical auto-ignition corn
stove available. The igniter is designed to light
corn in less than 5 minutes. The igniter discharges air in excess of 1200 degrees
Fahrenheit, well above the flash point of corn.

and design.
This is accomplished with a 400 watt element,
which means that no special wiring is
required, nor is there an excessive amount of
electricity required.
Automatic Temperature Control
The PC 45 is capable of maintaining extremely
even temperatures. Conventional thermostatic
controls can allow a ±3 degree swing in room
temperature. Harman’s automatic temperature
control eliminates these “hot/cold” cycles. The
real advantage of this system is efficiency: by
eliminating the 3 degree “overshooting” of a
set temperature, fuel is not wasted by making
the room warmer than desired.
ESP Probe
Harman stoves control all stove functions
with only one heat sensing device. The ESP
(Exhaust Sensing Probe) probe eliminates the
need for high-limit switches, snap switches,
or other potentially downtime producing components. Harman stoves have legendary reliability, and the PC 45 is built to maintain that
standard.

in the room. It can be placed centrally or by a
favorite chair. The stove will maintain the temperature at that location. This
is superior to the often arbitrary location of a thermostat on a wall. The room
sensor makes the room comfortable where you want it to be comfortable.

The stove controls have a yellow zone for burning corn and a white zone for burning pellets.
Air Cooled Combustion System
The corn igniter can ignite pellets in less than
one minute after the initial feed stops.
The standard hopper on the PC 45 will hold 80
pounds of corn or 72 pounds of pellets. The
optional hopper extension brings that capacity
up to 145 pounds for corn and 132 pounds for
pellets.
The PC 45 uses a two-level burn pot that
allows the incoming air to wash over the burn
pot components, cooling them and prolonging
their life. The air intakes are sized to allow for
long burn times. The number one reason for
premature loss of fire is a clogged air intake.
The Harman two-level design minimizes this
tendency.

The PC 45 has a large swing open ash door.
The oversize ash pan is easy to remove and
includes a carrying handle.
The large glass door gives an excellent view of
the fire. The Harman air wash system provides
plenty of supplementary air to keep the glass
remarkably clean. Corn burns with a blueorange flame that is pleasant to the eye and is
easily seen in the PC 45.

Accordion Heat Exchanger
The Harman Accordion Heat Exchanger has
many advantages: The pleats provide a large
surface area yielding very high discharge air
temperatures. The accordion pleats are very
easy to clean with the arrow-shaped cleaning
tool provided. This is superior to conventional
tube-type heat exchangers which do not trap
the heat and are difficult to clean.
There are no internal passages that are difficult or impossible to adequately clean, even
Pellet Conversion
The Harman PC 45 is easily converted to
burning pellets. An optional grate kit can be
purchased if the customer desires to alternate
between fuels. A slightly different burn pot and
a different end grate replace the corn burn pot
components. This is accomplished without
tools and can be done in almost as much time
as it takes to describe the process.
Do you want a corn stove that needs to be cleaned after burning for 48 hours or 48 days?
Permanent Pellet Conversion
It is possible that a customer may, at some
point, decide that he no longer desires to burn
corn. Perhaps corn is no longer readily available in his area. The PC 45 corn/pellet burn pot
has the same bolt pattern as the P61 Harman
pellet stove. This enables the customer to
permanently convert the PC 45 to pellets if
desired.
Harman Stove Company
Last, but by no means least, the PC 45 is built
and backed by Harman Stove Company, a
nearly 25-year-old company whose tradition is
“no compromise design.” It has always been
possible to buy a cheaper stove than a
Harman, but has not been possible to buy a
better stove than a Harman.
Corn is not the perfect fuel for everyone. If it is
