A Long and Lasting
Relationship Marked
By Its Closeness
O.C. Tanner of Salt Lake City, Utah, was the first
jeweler to welcome Wellendorff to the U.S. market
T
hirty years ago at a
jewelry show in Europe,
Brent McMaster, O.C.
Tanner’s then vice
president of retail operations,
was busy browsing through rows
of rings and racks of necklaces
by some of the world’s top luxury brands. Suddenly, the gleaming
gold and enamel creations of
Wellendorff, a small but highly
respected German company,
caught his eye.
Enamored, Mr. McMaster
arranged to bring the pieces
back to his jewelry store in
Salt Lake City, Utah, and, in
doing so, he became the first
person to welcome Wellendorff
to the U.S. market.
“Our oldest and longest
relationship in the country is
with O.C. Tanner,” says Christoph
Wellendorff, who heads the
company’s sales and marketing and is part of the fourth
generation of Wellendorffs
working with the company
today. “Today, Curtis Bennett
and the rest of the O.C. Tanner
team continue to carry on the
Wellendorff tradition and our
close relationship. I call Salt
Lake City my home in the
U.S., and I really mean that.”
Known for its slinky gold
rope necklaces and glowing
enamel rings, Wellendorff has
made a name for itself not only
among O.C. Tanner’s clientele,
but among customers worldwide. The Wellendorff name
represents a dynasty of German
jewelry designers, known among
their peers as the “gold makers.”
“We have a saying in
Germany, Wahre Werte, which
translates to genuine values,”
explains Christoph. “This is
our maxim. It means all our
pieces must be genuine,
authentic and true.”
It’s a maxim that applies
not just to its jewelry, but to
all facets of the Wellendorff
business. According to Christoph,
the company honors three
main priorities: family values,
genuine manufacturing, and
partnerships with the leading
jewelry stores in the world.
The luxury jewelry brand
began in 1893 when Ernst
Alexander Wellendorff founded
the Wellendorff company in
Pforzheim, Germany, creating
jewelry for European royalty.
“My great grandfather set
out to make the finest jewelry
possible,” says Christoph. “He
put all his emotion and all his
energy into creating it.”
Over the years, Ernst
perfected his goldsmith techniques and trained his son
Alexander in the craft. To
continue the Wellendorff
tradition and business, Alexander
trained his son Hanspeter.
Today, the company is managed by the fourth generation
of Wellendorffs, Hanspeter’s
sons Christoph and Georg.
“The business is all family
run and all family owned,”
says Christoph, “And we will
hand it over to the next
generation of Wellendorffs,
too.” Every member of the
immediate Wellendorff family
has input on new designs, and
the company works hard to
stay true to Ernst’s founding
principles of first-rate quality
and design.
One of Wellendorff’s most
successful special editions was
the ring designed in 2002 to
commemorate the Salt Lake City
Winter Olympics. The limitededition ring, which promptly
sold out, featured snowflakes
and the Olympic colors.
Every Wellendorff piece
features a small gold W crafted
of 18-karat gold and topped by
a single full-cut diamond. Found
on each piece of jewelry, whether
demurely dangling from a rope
necklace or embedded in the
design of a ring, the diamond
W is the company’s trademark,
and like the flying buttress of
a Rolls Royce or the interlocking
Cs of Chanel, the sparkly symbol
is viewed as one of the world’s
most valuable trademarks.
“The diamond W is our
signature on a piece, like an
artist’s signature on a painting,”
says Christoph. “By adding that
W to the piece, we are saying,
‘Now, it is perfect.’” In order
to ensure perfection, each
Wellendorff piece is inspected
under a 20-fold magnifier prior
to being finished with the
signature diamond W.
No Wellendorff piece is
complete—or authentic—without it.

In an interview, Curtis Bennett, vice president, retail operations, at O.C.
Tanner, talks about the collaboration of his firm with Wellendorff, the fine

What do you like about
the collaboration
with Wellendorff?
Curtis Bennett: I have always
felt that of all the people we
know and do business with in
our industry, the Wellendorff
family epitomizes the idea of
true partnership. They do this
by manufacturing the finest
jewelry in the world (and I do
mean the finest) as well as
assisting us in providing an
experience throughout the
purchases that is unlike
anyone I’ve ever known.
How do you describe
Wellendorff’s jewelry, and
what type of woman
prefers it?
Curtis Bennett: Wellendorff is
extremely beautiful and unique
among all classes of jewelry
available. It has a look and a
feel that instantly captures your
attention. The woman who
loves Wellendorff is very discriminating and in fact has high
expectations for her jewelry.

the highest possible standards

What do your customers

the fine craftsmanship and

Curtis Bennett: Wellendorff

Obert Tanner were still
alive today, he would
require that we carry
Wellendorff jewelry.
His passion was to
have the
most beautiful store in
the country.
And he
understood very
well that in
order to do
so, you had
to have the
most beautiful jewelry to
offer your
clients. He
would have
regarded
Wellendorff as an
absolute “must have.”
The latest Wellendorff
collection “Golden Angel”
was inspired by a
customer’s letter. What
is your personal opinion
about guardian angels?
Curtis Bennett: Once again,
the Wellendorff family through
the Golden Angels has been
able to capture the essence
and reason why jewelry is
so important. The idea of a
guardian angel, brings
home in a real way, why
celebrating a moment or an
emotion through jewelry is
so powerful. I genuinely
believe that those memories
and occasions are the guardian angels that help place
value, for generations to come,
on our lives.
