CONCEPT OF THE PROGRAM
THICKER THAN WATER is a ten episodes returnable one-hour drama series, set in
the enchanting Swedish archipelago. A chronicle about two brothers and a sister who
reunite on the island of Sunnanö when their mother passes away. But the inventive
mother has put conditions in her will; the siblings will have to run the family’s old
boarding house ‘Waldemars’ for one year – together. Or they won’t inherit it at all.
The island of Sunnanö is not only the most beautiful place in the Swedish archipelago,
it’s also the place where the Waldemar family has been running a popular old boarding
house. That is, old mother Anna-Lisa Waldemar and her son Oskar with his wife Liv,
who together have managed it through the years. Anna-Lisa’s two other children, the
handsome opportunist and entrepreneur Lasse and the free spirited actress Jonna,
fled their childhood home long ago in search of their dreams, gradually losing contact.
Now Lasse and Jonna return for one last summer, since their mother has called them
home in time for the season opening. This comes as a big surprise to little brother
Oskar. Why are they here, why now?
Lasse is struggling in life and divorced, living with his teenage daughter, Kim, but
Jonna on the other hand, is right on the brink of her own success, when they return to
their mother and brother Oskar, who has become the new manager.
It is amazing how the siblings’ arrival affects everyone and everything, and how they
slowly realize how much this place means to them. It feels like coming home. This
becomes even more apparent when mother Anna-Lisa disappears at sea one night,
only leaving them with a last will. Before the funeral they learn that Anna-Lisa’s body
was ridden with cancer. Her last will is full of conditions, which upsets the lives of her
children in different ways.

CONCEPT OF THE PROGRAM
The major condition is that in order for the siblings to inherit anything at all, they
must together manage the boarding house for a summer, or else the house and
surroundings will go to a wildlife foundation and they will get nothing. This comes as
a shock, especially to Oskar, who feels betrayed. He is the one who has helped his
mother over the years. Why on earth must he run it together with his siblings, who left
ages ago and should stay away like they always have. But Anna-Lisa’s last will is not
one of malice. It is a last effort to reunite them. The two brothers and their sister.
They belong here. When Anna-Lisa is gone all they have is each other and their beloved
family home.
During the course of the series we get to know Waldemar family, and follow their trials
and tribulations coping with the conditions of the will and their different needs. Love,
hardships and betrayal, but also immense joy and laughter. The siblings will discover
that blood is always thicker than water. But the three of them are also carrying secrets.
And there are other hidden secrets on Sunnanö. What is buried deep underneath the
old boarding house for instance? Some family secrets should stay buried.

SYNOPSIS
The beautiful island of Sunnanö in the Swedish archipelago is home to a popular B&B
run by Anna-Lisa and her son Oskar. Anna-Lisa has summoned her daughter Jonna, an
actress, and son Lasse, an opportunist, to the island. It is the first time in years that
they are together again.
When Anna-Lisa is found dead one morning, the siblings learn that she had terminal
cancer: her will stipulates that all three siblings must run the family B&B together for
a year, or they won’t inherit it at all. It is a mother’s last effort to reunite her children.
But it will also confront them with the family’s unsolved past, present forces of attraction,
and a very dark secret buried in a most unfortunate place …

Chronicle of the three siblings Waldemar: Lasse, Jonna and Oskar, who reunite after
many years at the family’s lodging house in the Alandic archipelago. The homecoming
is conflict-ridden and arouses old memories and secrets. Simultaneously their mother,
Anna-Lisa, has a hidden agenda that will forever change the lives of the siblings.

The sudden death of mother Anna-Lisa jolts the Waldemar siblings and her will
contains an unexpected demand that forces Lasse, Oskar and Jonna to stay and
cooperate against their will. At the same time an event occurs in Stockholm which
tightens the noose around Lasse’s throat. Suddenly the siblings are in for the longest
summer of their lives.

Jonna has disappeared and the will is threatened with annulment if she doesn’t return
to the lodging house. Lasse wants to finish the pool while he’s there, something Oskar
forbids. Underneath the pool is a dark secret that must never surface. Liv unwittingly
is drawn to Lasse. Could it be that old flames die hard?

The siblings must prevent their neighbor Mildred from selling the estate to Mikael
Rosén. Jonna has a dark secret they can bargain with. She knows what happened to
Mildred’s husband. Lasse leaves for Helsinki to buy Timos’ silence, but gets pulled
deeper into something he’s tried to avoid.

LASSE WALDEMAR
The eldest son, a stubborn rebel who left his childhood home early because of constant
friction and physical clashes with his brutal father, Mauritz.
He takes all the shortcuts he can in life and vainly strives for success, but is on
the brink of bankruptcy after failing in the restaurant business. On returning to
the lodging house, he not only reunites with Oskar, his kid brother, but also with
Liv, Lasse’s childhood sweetheart, and now Oskar’s wife. Something that will
change everything.

OSKAR WALDEMAR
Is the typical middle child, and forever the kid brother to Lasse. He’s hard-working,
pathologically suspicious and used to take care of his own first.
Oskar cannot feel other than cheated out of his inheritance. He sees himself as the
rightful heir to the lodging house, after having taken care of it all these years with his
mother, Anna-Lisa. He’s always competed with Lasse in everything – perhaps even
regarding his wife, Liv. Liv, who went steady with Lasse while teenagers. Oskar yet
again gets in the shadow of great, strong Lasse. Within Oskar a volcano is erupting.
And dark family secrets he thought would stay buried, soon are forced to surface.

JONNA WALDEMAR
Is the little sister, dreamer, and free-spirit, who fled Sunnanö and the housing lodge to
fulfill her acting aspirations.
Now, having been offered the opportunity of a lifetime, fate throws her back to the
island where she grew up and to her mother, Anna-Lisa, whom she always had a bad
relation with. Something that doesn’t diminish with the conditions of her will. Nobody
controls Jonna’s destiny. Least of all her mother. But suddenly Jonna feels a stronger
attraction to the island than ever before. Something she can’t really explain. Could
this be her dream? It’s always been her biggest fear – to get stuck on the island like
her mother.

LIV WALDEMAR
Is the beautiful native islander, strong and humble. She’s the backbone of the lodging
house and has always stood by the Waldemars – in her youth as Lasse’s girlfriend, as
mother Anna-Lisa’s friend, and now as Oskar’s wife.
Liv has always felt that the lodging house was as much hers as Oskar’s. How would
he ever manage the lodging house without her? But what is she to do with all the old
feelings aroused by seeing Lasse again?

ANNA-LISA WALDEMAR
Is the matriarch who fulfilled her dreams by running the old lodging house and the
family’s estate in the beautiful archipelago. Beset with a deadly sickness she composes
a last will – that changes the lives of her three children.
She doesn’t do it out of malice, but it’s inevitable that she controls her children from
the other side of the grave. Anna-Lisa realizes they’ve grown apart and she believes
they need each other. This is her last good deed. Her final wish. But the family and
childhood wounds are perhaps too deep to heal.

KIM WALDEMAR
Is Lasse’s teenage daughter, who hates everything that has to with Åland and Sunnanö.
Most of her hatred derives from the fact of being forced to stay away from the city and
her friends all summer.
But Kim befriends cousin Cecilia, Oskar and Liv’s able daughter. And she meets a new
friend from the neighbouring plot – Fredrik. He’s the old, bad-tempered neighbour,
Mildred’s son, whose family truly hates the Waldemars. Oskar sees the hatred as mutual,
so Lasse should keep better supervision of his daughter. But Kim usually walks her
own path, and does so here as well.
