of the Trondheimsfjord and the
travel routes to Sweden. The city
celebrated its 1000th anniversary
in 2011.
The network of streets in the city
centre is located right down by
the idyllic strait, Levangersundet,
and the park, Sjøparken.
WOODEN HOUSE TOWN
Levanger is one of Norway’s
most interesting wooden house
towns and represents a major
national cultural heritage value.
The houses in the city centre are
distinctive and unique in a national context, particularly those
in Swiss and Art nouveau style.
THE ISLAND YTTERØY
Ytterøy, the pearl of the Trondheimsfjord is an island situated just
30 minutes by ferry from the city
centre of Levanger. We recommend taking your bike over on
the new ferry and enjoy the lush
cultural landscape. Make sure to
enjoy a food break at Cafe Rampa.
HISTORIC MARKET PLACE
Levanger is an historic market
place with major trading dating
back to Medieval times. The town
was founded as a market place
due to its location on the shores

trading tradition, takes place from
25-27 February. It concludes with
a torchlight procession in which
thousands of people walk through
the streets and the entire town is
the stage for various tableaux.
Munkeby MARIAkloster 1
Munkeby Mariakloster was a
cistercian monastery at Okkenhaug
in Levanger – probably established
by English monks in the latter half
of the 12th century. Today, 800
years later, the monastery experience is being recreated by French
monks of the same order. Munkeby
Mariakloster produces cheese,
today regarded as one of Norway’s
best cheeses.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Maybe you want to hike along the
pilgrim route that runs through the
municipality? You can enjoy food
and drink and stay overnight along
the way . It is en route that
memories and experiences are
created. We can recommend taking the trip to Frol Mountain and
Upper Forra nature reserve. It is
probably North Trøndelag’s most
visited outdoor recreation area
both winter and summer, with
the bird rich forramyrene and
Hårskallen with a rare plant flora.

Every year, about 20 000 people
come to watch a dramatic presentation of the events that led up to the
battle on 29th of July 1030. Stiklestad
church is, true to tradition, built
exactly on the place where King Olav
fell, and has been a meeting place
ever since it was built in the 12th
century. Stiklestad became an important pilgrim destination in the middle
ages, and these days the numbers of
pilgrims coming to Stiklestad are increasing. Accommodation facilities for
both pilgrims and other guests have
developed through the opening

More than 300 square kilometres
of Verdal are located within the
boundaries of the Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. There are
many opportunities for enjoying
the great outdoors, including hunting and fishing in large parts of the
municipality. Verdal River is one of
the region’s best salmon rivers.
Kværner Verdal is a cornerstone in
the industrial history of Verdal and
one of the biggest employers in
the area. The current establishment of a wind power components

business in the Ørin industrial park
is creating a lot of excitement. On
the other side of the river lies an
intimate and pleasant city centre.
Combine luch with a walk in the
city, and you will experience small
unique shops with clothes, art and
interior.
EVENTS ARE AN IMPORTANT
RESOURCE
“Olsokdagene” – The Saint Olav
Festival at Stiklestad at the end of
July each year, has become one of
Norway’s largest cultural festivals.
The Vømmøl festival at the end of
May attracts around 10,000 visitors.
The festival fills Verdal with crowds
in a party mood who attend events
and concerts playing music by Hans

BIRD - WATCHING
A network of bird towers and
photohides have been built at
Tronestangen and Leksdalsvatnet.
The bird towers are built in the
vicinity of known bird-habitatas
with high diversity. The towers and
photography hides are near public
roads and have parking facilities.
The birdwatching tower at lake
Lekdalsvatnet will have facilities
for wheelchair users. The second
tower in Verdal can be reached by
following the river walk Elvepromenaden towards Trones, where over
204 species of birds have been observed.
THE VErdal FORTIFICATIONS
Værdalske Fortifications were
built between 1907 and 1911 as
a defence against attacks from
the east. Both Russia and Sweden
were regarded as possible enemies
of Norway following the dissolution of the union of Norway and
Sweden in 1905. Fortunately the
fortifications were never involved
in any wartime action and in 1936
they were closed down by the
Norwegian Army. The galleries
have been restored and opened up
to the public. The fortifications are

Summer in Stiklestad 25 June - 14 August 2016
The medieval farm of Stiklestadir offers a wealth of activities for young and old. The
children can act as archeologists and find traces of the past, or dress up as vikings and
fight with sword and shield in the Play Battle. They can also try their hand at archery,
ax throwing and a number of other exciting activities. Every day at Stiklestadir, there are
guided tours of the longhouse and family friendly story telling sessions. And starting
this year, the public are invited to visit the newly built Guest House.
For the first time at the folk museum you can visit three courtyards from three different
periods of time. How about a trip in time to 1958 to hear a bit of Elvis on the record
player? Or perhaps you will run into refugees who need help to get across the border to
Sweden in the 1940s?
There are activities for the children every day, incl. the Barn Playhouse, where the
youngest can rest assured that the animals don’t mind being patte and hugged.
The St. Olav’s Days in Stiklestad 24 - 31 Juli 2016
A full week of adventures and activitiesd for the whole family.

Inderøy Municipality
ROEL
Inderøy has one of Norway’s
most beautiful cultural landscapes, which together with the
sea and special light at Inderøy,
has inspired artists and authors
for hundreds of years. Inderøy
stretches from the E6 motorway
over the fertile peninsula in the
Trondheimsfjord via the strait of
Skarnsundet to Mosvik on the
Fosen Peninsula.
The municipal centre, Straumen,
gained its name from one of the
strongest tidal currents in the
country – in the narrow neck of
water between the Trondheim
and Borgen fjords. Klokkarstu,
an old red-painted building from
the 1700s, is centrally located in
Straumen between the Nils Aas
Art studio, the Internet Café E@
and Jostu’s Candle Foundry. The
old Rødbrygga also tells its story
to the restaurant guests.
Prior to 2012 Inderøy and Mosvik
were separate municipalities, but
following a dynamic and good
process they have now merged
into one municipality. There are
strong agricultural, forestry and
cultural traditions here.
Facilities in the village of Mosvik
include Mosvik Brygge, hair
dresser and a grocery store.
The rich soil and high skies
38
above Inderøy provide excellent
produce for the small scale food
farmers. Inderøysodd which is
produced in Straumen, is a
popular variation of the
traditional Trønder dish.
DEN GYLDNE OMVEI /
THE GOLDEN ROAD
The stretch of road known as The
Golden Road takes you through
beautiful cultural landscape along
county road Fv761 (with side
roads) in Inderøy municipality, and
has a multitude of interesting sites
with many family activities. Locally produced food, special places
to stay and dine, local artists,
exhibitions and attractions are
among the experiences on The
Golden Route. www.dgo.no
THE Muustrø park 4
The Muustrø Park is an idyllic place
in the municipal centre of Straumen. Here you can use all your
senses as you wander along the
path. Large and small sculptures
by Nils Aas and a mill are some of
the attractions. Ringstu is among
Inderøy’s oldest preserved buildings, and stands in the middle of
the park. At the mouth of the river
”Grana” you can stroll over the Muusbrua bridge from 1816 – to the
sound of the sculpture ‘Flounder’
by Nils Aas. Last chance to hear it
in 2016. www.flyndresang.no
Skarnsund brIDGE 3
Skarnsund bridge connects Mosvik
at Fosen-peninsula to Inderøy.
This is one of the world’s longest
cable-stayed bridges, where the
characteristic red cables reach into
the sky like a gigantic harp. Under
the bridge, in Skarnsundet Strait,
you will find a favourite diving and
fishing area. The orange sea plants
give the impression of more tropical waters.

which changes with the tides and seasons.

THE RECONSTRUCTED TOWN
The reconstructed town was

Guided city walks in Steinkjer
Steinkjer has an exciting city history.
Parts of the city burned in 1900 and was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style. During
World War 2, the town was bombed and almost the entire city centre was laid
in ruins. We start the walk at the tourist office in Steinkjer and terminate at
Steinkjer Church. After the tour you will perhaps look at Steinkjer city with
slightly different eyes.
Tuesday and Friday at 11.00 from the tourist office June 1. - AUG 1.

Snåsa Municipality
Saemien Sijte
Snåsa is a bilingual municipality
where the Sami language and
culture is very much alive. The

means of transport that
connected Snåsa with the rest
of the region. The current centre
was developed near the railway
station, which opened in 1926.
Snåsa is a typical rural municipality. Agriculture and forestry are
the main industries, but in recent
years the number of industrial
jobs has grown.
The E6 motorway and railway line
both go through the municipality,
and Snåsa is a 45-minute drive
from Steinkjer and around one
hour from Namsos.
SOUTH SAMI CULTURE
Snåsa is the centre of the South
Sami culture, and has several
Sami institutions, a kindergarten,
school and dormitory for South
Sami children. Saemien Sijte, a
South Sami Museum and Cultural
Centre, is open year-round and is
well worth a visit.
In the north end of lake Snåsavatnet is the old municipal centre

SUMMER MOUNTAIN FARMS
Snåsa has around 15 active summer mountain farms where the
cows graze on fresh herb-rich
grass that gives the milk and
mountain farm products special
qualities. The atmosphere is
special and it is a great place to
enjoy a local meal.
Not far from Saemien Sijte and
Snåsa Church is the childhood
home of the “Snåsa Man”, Joralf
Gjerstad. It has been restored to
its former glory and looks just as
it did throughout Gjerstad’s childhood. Pay a visit to the house
and see the photos and honours
Joralf and Signe have received.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National
Park forms a large part of the
municipality, and Snåsa is a
national park municipality.
If you like hiking to genuine
mountain farms, in deep forests,
open mountain areas and go on
hunting and fishing trips, then
Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National
Park is worth exploring.
char fishing and a great place
to paddle a kayak or canoe. The
municipality also has 10 marked
cycle routes. Visit the tourist
information office in Snåsa or
Steinkjer for a brochure over
cycle routes. The mountain roads
in Snåsa are the starting point
for marked trails to the mountain
farms of Gjefsjøen, Holden and
Gaundalen.
BERGÅSEN
Bergsåsen, right near the town
centre, and Finsåsmarka both
have rich occurrences of orchids.
Snåsa has chosen the “lady’s
slipper” orchid as its municipal
flower and it also features on the
municipal coat of arms. There is a
marked nature trail in Bergsåsen
starting in the town centre of
Snåsa.
