The mission of Charles E. Smith Life Communities is to fulfill Jewish values by providing a
continuum of quality services for elders and their families, and to affirm our commitment

OUR NAME
Charles E. Smith Life Communities takes its
name from a visionary leader in the Washington
Jewish community. Charles E. Smith (1901-1995)
was a persuasive philanthropist who generously
supported the most vulnerable in our society. As
president of the Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he
boldly laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969
move to its current Rockville campus.

In this annual report our success is apparent. Quality care and
outstanding service are at the core of all we do, and the opening pages of
this report describe how quality has been achieved throughout our campus.
The outstanding ratings, awards, and recognition we received for our
efforts, as an organization and as individuals, are throughout this book.
The seeds that blossomed into five-star ratings, high occupancy, solid
financial performance, and mission-driven charitable care were planted
some time ago, and we know the accomplishments we celebrate today are
due to focused efforts that have been underway. Ultimately what we achieve
is based on the combined efforts of each and every staff member at Charles
E. Smith Life Communities, and we want to take this moment to express
appreciation for the way in which our staff has so diligently cared for our
mothers, fathers, spouses, and loved ones.
This level of accomplishment does not take place in a vacuum.
The contributions from the community, both in terms of critical financial
support and in outstanding and committed lay leadership, provide the
essential resources that guide our efforts, today and into the future.
Caring for the seniors in our community is both a privilege and a
responsibility. To meet this responsibility, we face twin challenges as we
move ahead: sustaining the outstanding accomplishments described in
this report, and at the same time, planning to deliver the kind of care and
services the next generation of seniors will seek. We look forward to having

H2YP YOUTH PHILANTHROPY
The Harold and Shirley Robinson H2YP Youth Philanthropy Program’s innovative curriculum offers local high school students an
in-depth view of the many services on our campus and provides teens with the opportunity to play an active role as philanthropists
and decision-makers for grants to benefit campus residents. In 2013, the participants funded a Spanish language class at Ring
House; the Snoezelen, a state-of-the-art sensory therapy device for residents with dementia; a new freezer for the Revitz House Café;
and tickets to musical and theatrical performances off campus.
