GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT IED Founded in Milan in 1966, Istituto Europeo di Design is today a network of training and research widely recognized on an international level. Its methodologies are based on the deep belief that knowledge and know‐how should develop together because this is the only way to offer young creative artists a complete training, a “Culture of the project” accompanying them for the rest of their lives. Thanks to this intuition and to the vivacious dynamism characterizing it, IED is today an international school that develops ideas and creativity, but also concreteness and professionalism, organizing post‐
diploma courses, masters and advanced training courses addressed to talented people of all ages and creative ambition. PRACTICAL INFORMATION for FOREIGN (NON‐EU) STUDENTS VISA FOR STUDY Foreigners are citizens of any Country that is not memeber of the European Union and the European Economic Area. For long stays (above 90 days) for whatever purpose all foreigners are required to hold a visa, even if they are citizens of Countries, which do not require transit or short‐stay visas. So students, coming from non‐EU Countries and intending to enter Italy to study at IED (for a period longer than 90 days), need a VISA for STUDY, application for which can be made at the Italian Diplomatic and Consular Representations in the country of residence. STUDENTS, WHO ENTER ITALY WITH A TOURIST VISA, CANNOT APPLY FOR THEIR RESIDENCE PERMIT FOR STUDY and, for this reason, THEY WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO IED CLASSES. Students are invited to check the information on the Admission procedure, visiting the website at page: http://www.ied.edu/study‐in‐italy/general‐information No visas (and no extension to previously issued visas) may be granted to foreigners who are already on the Italian territory. Visa for study (D) allows people to travel in the Schengen Area for tourism for a period no longer than 90 days in a semester. When the Visa expires, students do not have to renew it because the Italian Embassies / Consulates issue this document with the only purpose to authorize people to enter Italy the first time. When people arrive in Italy, they must apply for the Residence permit, which is the only document that entitles students to stay legally on the Italian territory. Information about the procedure to apply for the Visa and the documents required, is available on the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp STUDENTS ALREADY IN ITALY Students, who are already in Italy, may enrol in a Bachelor Degree (Academic Diploma First Level) at IED, if they satisfy the following requirements: -

have already attended at least one year at an Italian university; have passed at least two exams at the Italian university for which the Italian Embassy/Consulate had issued the visa (allowing the study program in Italy); have the official enrolment in a Bachelor Degree at IED; have a written statement, addressed at the Italian university where he/she attended the previous academic year, in which the student officially declares his/her intention to pursue university studies at IED. In the event that the student had not yet attended at least one year at the university for which he/she had applied for the visa, may enrol for a Bachelor Degree at IED only if he/she failed to pass the admission test at that university and, in case, submitting written notice to the Police, released by the university, in which it is possible clearly infer the reason for this change (i.d. Student does not pass the admission test, etc.). In all other cases students must go back home and apply at the Italian Embassy/Consulate in their Country for a new visa for study, that must be issued for the IED course chosen. EU citizens to enter Italy the first time. Before entering Italy. The Residence Permit is the document that allows non‐

SSN provides low or no‐cost health care to all EU citizens, including in‐patient treatment (tests, medication and surgery during hospitalisation), visits to family doctors and medical assistance provided by paediatricians, obstetricians and other specialists. Emergency health provision is available to all EU and non‐EU visitors. Medical facilities in Italy are adequate for any emergencies that may arise. Public hospitals are operated by the National Health Service, and charge flat, all‐in‐one rates that include all medical services, surgery (if required), bed and board. All foreign students must have a health insurance while living in Italy (students cannot obtain the Residence permit without it). Eueopean citizens and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC – in Italy this card is called “TEAM”) The Italian Ministry of Health declares that all EU‐citizens, who are in Italy for a short or long period and having the EHIC, are entitled to obtain only the urgent and undelayble medical treatments. If you do not have a private insurance and you intend to stay more than three months, you must apply for the form E 106 from your Country before leaving. EHIC with E Form can be used to apply both for the Registration at Comune di Milano and the enrollment to the Italian Public Health Service. It is necessary to have the Tax Code to enrol in the Public Health Service. The European Health Insurance Card replaces the previously used forms, in particular the well known E 111: 
E111 and E111B used by tourists, 
E110 used by international haulage companies, 
E128 used by workers posted to another Member State and by students, IED MILANO INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE
22

E119 used by unemployed people seeking work in another Member State (only for benefits in kind). You should not travel to another Member State of the European Economic Area or Switzerland without your European health insurance card or a provisional replacement certificate. The European health insurance card cannot be used for private sector health care providers. It is obligatory for your health insurance institution to issue a European health insurance card or a provisional replacement certificate at your request. Non EU‐students need to have a private insurance (health policy) which must be valid for the duration of stay in Italy. REGISTRATION TO THE ITALIAN PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE The registration can be made directly at the Local Health Authority (ASL, Azienda Sanitaria Locale). Students must go to the ASL nearest to their accommodation. The local offices are open from Mondays to Fridays: 8.30 – 12.00 am and 1.30 – 3.00 pm When students are at ASL, showing Form E111, they will receive in exchange a booklet covering temporary stay in Italy (normally valid up to 3 months). Residents of Italy who are covered by the National Health Service will be provided hospital services free of charge. People not enrolled under the National Health Service plan, are expected to pay hospital charges in full for any medical treatment and then claim a reimbursement from their insurance carrier. Some hospitals (not all) take credit cards; sometimes, however, hospitals will agree to bill patients after discharge. There are also a number of private hospitals and clinics offering a wide range of medical services. Charges, although variable, are generally much higher than those applied by public hospitals. Please note that with a private insurance, people are free to choose any doctor or specialist and be treated in private hospitals. On the other hand, if students need to see a specialist, doctor will give them a referral (called impegnativa) which they must take and show, when they go to the appointment. Specialists usually work in hospitals or local health buildings, though some private doctors, who have an agreement with the health convention, also operate from private consulting rooms Once students are registered with a doctor at the local health authority, they can visit him at his surgery (during surgery hours). The registration is valid for one solar year and only until your Residence Permit is valid. We suggest making the registration at the beginning of the year. After registration the ASL will give you a Health Card. The cost of a Health Card for foreign students is Euro 149,77. The payment has to be made at the Postal Office. Ask for an F4 Model or fill in a postal bulletin in this way: Payment in favour of: AMMINISTRAZIONE REGIONE LOMBARDIA Current account number: 379222 Reason: ISCRIZIONE VOLONTARIA AL SERVIZIO SANITARIO NAZIONALE PER L’ANNO 20__ (facsimile on page 56). With the Health Card you can: - choose a general practitioner (called medico di famiglia) - have a specialist examination (you are only charged the basic fare) Documents required: - Residence Permit - Documents concerning your current address in Italy: a lease contract or any other declaration - Tax Code Students have to make a written statement (self‐certificate) declaring that they have no other medical insurance valid at the moment (given that now they are a resident in Italy). ASL Local Offices Offices are open from Monday to Friday, from 8.30 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 1.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. IED MILANO INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE

Every person, when he/she travels, has different needs, habits, expectations and also budget. When students look for their accommodations in Milan, they must evaluate many aspects: often they don’t know the city and they don’t speak Italian so they must be very careful, especially before signing any documents or contract and before giving money to someone. The prices of renting an apartment in Milan are very expensive (in particular near the centre) and in certain periods (e.g. Sptember/October) there is lack of availability. IED suggests that students include, in planning their trip and stay in Milan, at least from 3 to 7 days to find housing. Before leaving, the students must be sure to have a place to stay for at least the first few nights (e.g. a hotel/residence room, guest of friend, etc.). It is very important to always see in person the apartments offered by private advertisements (e.g. internet, offers on university board, ads posted on the streets, etc.) but also by real estate agencies. Visiting a flat, students should consider its condition (good or bad), if there are appliances (e.g. whasing machine, dishwashing machine, tv, telephone, internet connection, etc.), whether the apartment is located in a safe and quiet area of the city, if it is well served by public transport, proximity to shops or supermarkets, etc. Before signing a lease, students should ask what is included in the rental price (usually electricity, gas, telephone, internet connection and shared running expenses of the block are not included), the way of the payment, the duration of the contract and how to cancel/break it. Generally owners ask for a deposit (equal to 2 or 3 montlh of rent per month) and the payment in advance of 2 or 3 monthly rent. When they receive the money, they must give an official receipt for that payments (with revenue stamp of Euro 1,81). Students can download the Guide “Living in Lombardy” (produced by Regione Lombardia), where they can find many useful tips and valuable: http://www.ismu.org/ISMU_new/upload/files/20091030055937.pdf It is possible to know where is a street in Milan, searching trough ATM website or Google Map. Students have to open this page http://www.atm‐mi.it/giromilano/ and click on Ricerca Indirizzo, writing the name of the street in the blank space, they will see where is located in Milan. If they click on Calcola Percorso they can see the distance between IED school (typing in via Amatore Sciesa / number 4) and a street (typing in the name and the number). Students without a residence permit cannot rent a flat or sign a lease ! Students can search for an apartment through: ads placed on the IED list (the school does not carry out checks on the ads list), available at IED Reception (see the e‐mail addresses at page ; ads on the websites: www.studenti.it www.affittistudenti.it www.cercoalloggio.it www.easystanza.it www.milano.bakeca.it IED MILANO INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GUIDE
