In Loving Memory An Incredible Donation In October, a very generous community member (who wishes to be anonymous) approached the Northwest SPCA to offer a very special donation: She is donating $1,000 every month for one year! On August 30, 2014, we lost a dear friend and dedicated member of the Northwest SPCA community. Clyde Eaker joined the SPCA support team in 2008 and was an integral part in helping to set up and get our surgical unit in operation in order to provide in-house spay/neuter to the shelter animals before adoption. Having the surgical unit at the shelter allows us to spay and neuter animals for a much lower cost – we used to have to pay just as much as the public pays. The savings help our funds stretch much farther. Clyde attended all of our events and promoted our work in any way he could. He always brought his family, and they, in turn, often provided donations and raffle items for our fundraisers. We will miss his ever-present smile and support dearly. She has specified that the donation is to be used for supplies needed for that month, whether that may be food of a specific nature, toys for the animals, or other needed supplies. PLUS, she has directed that these supplies are to be purchased from a locally owned small business, so this donation will support our community in two ways. Clyde Eaker, enjoying himself as always, at the NWSPCA bowling fundraiser in early 2014. We would like to give a great big THANK YOU! to this community member, whose contributions will go a long way to offset the slowdown in donations we’ve seen (as have many other worthy nonprofits) in the sluggish economy of the past few years. Northwest SPCA Northwest Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Winter 2014 N E W S L ET T E R Annual Membership Meeting and Pancake Breakfast We are holding our annual membership meeting and pancake breakfast on Saturday, January 31, 2015, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The meeting will feature a buffet style breakfast with a plethora of items for everyone. We will have door and raffle prizes, and offer an update on everything shelter-related. Please join us for great food and information at the Thermalito Grange Hall, located at 479 Plumas Avenue in Oroville. Tickets will be available at the door for a suggested donation of $7 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under (no donation needed for children 2 and under). All proceeds benefit the animals and help us continue our efforts to give them a second chance at life in their forever homes. Holiday Adoption News We’re losing track on how many years that we’ve participated in the annual Home 4 The Holidays adoption event; all we know is that we wouldn’t miss it for anything! At this time of year, it’s our goal to get every animal possible adopted into a home. Last year, we adopted 159 animals at this same time. As of December 6th, we had adopted 170 animals, already surpassing last year! With four weeks to go, this may be one of our best H4TH events yet! The H4TH event is nationwide and sponsored by the pet food company Blue Buffalo and the Helen Woodward Animal Center. It’s a three-month adoption drive that saves the lives of thousands of pets and raises awareness about the importance of pet adoption during the holiday season. More families bring a new pet home during the holiday season than at any other time of year. Visit our website, www.northwestspca.org, for a current listing of our adoptable pets. The Northwest SPCA on Facebook We have joined the 21st century and have started a Facebook page, where we feature our adoptable animals and stories and upcoming events. We are currently at 1378 “Likes,” and climbing fast. The more likes and shares we get for our featured animals, the faster they will get adopted! The less time the animals spend in the shelter, the better for them. So, please look for our page and “Like” us today! Volunteers and Donors There are numerous groups and community members who support us throughout the year, every year. Unfortunately, we do not have enough room to name them all individually, but we’d still like to offer this acknowledgement and a great big THANKS! to all. Groups include local Girls and Boys Scout Troops, college groups and individuals for school projects, kids who have asked their friends and families for donations to the shelter in lieu of birthday presents for themselves, 4-H groups, Lions’ Clubs, and several ROP programs. We appreciate every bit of support – and whether they know where it came from or not, so do the animals! That was a huge first step. Now, the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) at Oroville High is helping with volunteer photographers, too! ROP photography instructor Tonya Paul brings students to the shelter weekly for an intensive “Paw-tography” session, in which as many animals as possible are photographed in rapid succession, under a professional lighting setup and with a variety of backdrops and props. The photos are then uploaded on our website and posted on our Facebook page. The results are FAR better than the “booking” photos, taken sort of like mugshots when the animals come in to the shelter, and even better than our experienced but hurried staffers can manage. A professional lighting setup and seamless backdrop are making our adoptable animals’ portraits much better! Thanks to all the photography volunteers! Please contact us if you would like to lead a team or if you would just like to bowl with us on that day, to be held in April 2015. Keep in mind that while regular bowlers have significantly contributed to our fundraising, you do NOT need to a good bowler to participate and have a blast! Call the NW SPCA if you can help: (530) 533-7636. Team uniforms not required, but they are fun! Bring your kids! You need not be at all tall to bowl . . .
