PERNAMBUCO-PARAÍBA BASIN
Generalities
• Area: 39,000 km2
Onshore: 7,600 km 2
Offshore: 31,400 km 2
Origin: Early Aptian Rift (or older) originating at a
relatively later phase compared to the
Eastern and Equatorial margins, when the
continental crust in this area was the last strip
connecting the continents of Africa and
South America

PERNAMBUCO-PARAÍBA BASIN
Favourable Basin Factors
• Evidence of an Aptian or older Rift according to
surface mapping
• Thick sedimentary section (Rift and Drift)
• Seismic evidence of structuring
• Adequate thermal evolution (pre, syn and postRift)
• Onshore geochemical anomalies
• Offshore geochemical anomalies (piston cores)
• Timing
PERNAMBUCO-PARAÍBA BASIN
Petroleum System
• Onshore and offshore geochemical anomalies
• Presence of black shales in onshore wells
• Evidence of reservoirs in onshore wells
• Possible turbidites in deepwater areas
• Possible seals in distal areas - offshore
• Evidence of inversion structures on seismic lines
- formation of traps
• Evidence of faults – possible routes for the
migration of HC
• Timing
PERNAMBUCO-PARAÍBA BASIN
Petroleum System
• Geochemistry study
• Onshore - surface survey
• Results: high concentrations anomalies of gaseous HC
•
Interpretation: generation processes and migration of HC,
preferentially coming from deeper portions
of the offshore basin
• Offshore - piston cores survey
•
•
Results: heavy gaseous HC anomalies (low oncentrations)
principally north and center of basin
Interpretation: active petroleum system processes
within subsurface - possible thermochemical origin
