Why LPA? This year marks the 40th anniversary for Lake Ponderosa Association. In 1976, a group of property owners got together to form an association to organize and represent property owners for everyone’s benefit. Lake Ponderosa is a unique situation in that the development is privately owned, not owned by an association of the property owners. We all pay fees to the developer for road maintenance, dredging, and water service. Over the last 40 years, the role of the association has evolved and taken on additional challenges and projects. It has worked with Ponderosa Development to institute reasonable rules, enabling all of us to enjoy the lake in our own way. We purchase and maintain the buoys and boat ramp docks and gate. We purchased and maintain the storm siren at the lake. In recent years, we worked with Ponderosa Utilities to enlarge the causeway tunnel and we successfully stopped two hog confinements from being constructed within a couple miles of the lake, and we got the largest owner of hog confinements in Iowa to agree to stay at least six miles away from Lake Ponderosa for good. We also worked with the county sanitarian to make sure all septic systems at the lake were being properly tested and maintained. Additionally, we check the lake water several times a year for e-coli and nitrate concentrations, and have discussed the algae situation with Ponderosa Utilities. Annually, we stock the lake with walleye. We hold an annual lake clean-up day in the spring. We communicate with all property owners on issues of water and ice safety, water contamination prevention, and keep everyone informed of what is going on around the lake. We also try to make the Lake a fun place for all. We sponsor the Kid’s Fishing Derby and put on one of the better Independence Day fireworks displays in Iowa. With all of this said, the LPA cannot enforce the rules. We do not maintain the roads or do the dredging. We can, however, speak with a unified voice, offering suggestions and making recommendations for Ponderosa Utilities to consider. There is strength in numbers. The more property owners who are members, the stronger our voice. We know many of you use the lake as your getaway from the day to day grind. You are not looking for things “to get involved in”. Fortunately, we are able to find enough volunteers to carry the load, and only ask people to be as involved as they want to be. We do, however, invite you to join us as dues paying members. Together, we have more influence than any of us would alone. I invite you to join the LPA. If you have any questions or concerns, let me know. Thank you to everyone trying to keep the lake as closed up as possible. We know some docks require that water be kept open underneath them. The best ways to keep open water to a minimum are: • Keep the aerator as low in the water as possible • Direct the aerator towards shore • Use either a thermostat or timer. These efforts help keep the geese away during the winter and make it safer for those who use the ice on the lake for various recreational activities. Good job everyone. Keep up the good work. Karen McNaul and Karen Meek have both expressed interest and introduced themselves and capabilities. A vote was made and elected Karen Meek as the new secretary/treasurer. Laura will work with Karen. Proper Aerator Usage: This is a risk and safety issue. It is recommended to ask the Ahrens to have a policy with a board recommendation. We have lost dogs as well as human lives, some due to improper aerator usage. Having open water encourages geese which in turn help to keep water open or skim over with thin ice. Aerators do not need to be turned on until about March 1st (or earlier if conditions present). Ed motioned and Karen seconded that the board come up with a proposal to present to the Ahrens. All were in favor. Bob moved and Karen seconded the meeting be adjourned. Meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM LPA Continues E-coli Testing In 2015, Lake Ponderosa Association conducted three e-coli tests during the summer. The test consists of taking water samples from five different locations around the lake and sending them in to the State Hygienic Laboratory for testing. During 2015, all test results were well below the maximum standard of 235 parts per 100mL. During normal conditions, the e-coli level at Lake Ponderosa is very low. That means septic systems are functioning properly. Test results are always higher after a large rain resulting in excessive water runoff into the lake. If we have a heavy rain and the lake level rises significantly, there is a strong chance the e-coli count will be much higher than normal. People using the lake should keep this in mind. If we ever receive test results exceeding the maximum standard, and email will be sent out to everyone informing them. If you are interested in more information on bacteria monitoring, go to the Iowa DNR website www.iowadnr.gov. We tested pretty heavily in the beginning to try and achieve a base line of our lake’s water quality for reference. I think testing of the 3 main sites around the first of each month should be more than adequate. We have had very little variation in chemical assessments so far, and if that trend continues, testing could be further reduced to every other month unless conditions require additional testing. Overall, test results for physical and chemical assessments were well within parameters set up by the Iowa DNR. I would venture to say we had a very healthy lake last year. Yes there were some minor algae bloom outbreaks, but nothing like the previous couple years. As in the past, the biggest danger to our lakes health is overflow of brackish, polluted water from the holding ponds situated at the end of the runs of our watersheds. Whenever we have a heavy rainfall these holding ponds release all of their algae and duckweed mats and concentrations of farm field runoff directly into the bays and finally the main lake. Last year the east lake was noticeably clearer than the west lake, mostly due to the fact that the east lake has only Continued on page 14 COLEMAN AGENCY, INC.
