H-BEAM CONNECTING RODS
Thank you for purchasing another quality TOMEI product.
The TOMEI H-Beam Connecting Rod and was designed to cope with high power applications and with reduced
weight properties to improve engine response and feel for both the turbo engine and NA engines. These
Conrods shape and weight balance are designed for optimum response and for use at high engine speeds.
Professional installation is required for optimum performance gains.

■ This product has been designed for high engine speeds and high power output applications. Precision is
required during assembling, if these Connecting Rods are not assembled correctly then there will be a
high risk of engine failure.
■ Please check the engine oil amount prior to starting the engine. After a test run has been performed
please check for any signs of oil and or fluid leaks for safety requirements. Check for adequate oil in the
engine at all times.

CAUTION
・ If the Conrod Bolt is not torqued up properly then there is a risk of it coming loose and causing engine failure.
・ The some of the numerical values stated in this manual are the Tomei recommendation and others are OEM
recommendations from service manuals. These values should be used as a reference and should always be
compared with the values as stated in the official manufacturers workshop/service manuals
・ Please follow the proceedures outlined in this manual. Great care is needed when assembling an engine. The
correct clearnaces need to be followed as stated in this manual or the engine can be broken.
・ Please do not use this product if it is damaged and or modified in anyway. If there has been any modifications
done to this product there is a risk of it being weakened and reduced stress load handling which can lead to
engine failure.
・ Please refer to the other manuals for Piston information when using these Conrods with either the Tomei Piston
Kit or other brands of Pistons.
INSTALLATION
1. CONROD DISSASSEMBLY & CLEANING
(1) Loosen the Conrod bolts by 2mm and then with a plastic hammer you hit the rod cap to remove the Conrod
Cap.

(2) Wash the conrod bolts and threads.
CAUTION
・ Try not to mix the Conrod and Conrod Caps when you have them apart. Marking the Rods and Caps will help
you not to get confused.
・ If you loosen the bolts too much (more than 2mm) then you can risk damaging the bolts and threads when
disassembling the conrods.

2. CONROD ASSEMBLY
(1) Apply the Molybdenum Grease to the Bolt Screw and to the neck of the bolt head surface when installing the
Connecting Rod Bearings.
CAUTION
When applying the Molbedenum Grease on the parts please keep it evenly spread accross and do not apply too
much as it can change the torque differences when tightening the bolts on.
Remove all signs of oil and unwanted material
from the metting face of the areas shown below.

Apply the Molybdenum Grease evenly on the
sections pointed out below.
(2) These are the recommended torque specs.

※ REFERENCE: The bolt will have 0.12 - 0.15mm of stretch with the above settings.

3. CONROD BEARING OIL CLEARANCE INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENT
Measure the inner diameter of the Connecting Rods to find the suitable bearing size so that the right oil
clearance level is maintained.
Oil Clearance = Bearing inside diameter - Crankpin diameter

4. BUSH CLEARANCE INSPECTION
(1) Measure the Connecting Rods Small End inner diameter to verify that the bush clearance is within the
acceptable tollerance.
Bush Clearance = Conrods Small End Inner Diameter - Piston Pin Diameter.

0.010 - 0.015 (Limit is 0.025)
(2) Apply oil to both the Piston Pin and to the inside of the Connecting Rods Small End section during
assembly and verify smooth operation.
5. PISTON INSTALLATION
[EJ20 NOTES] Have the （
） logo marking facing to the front of the engine when assembling and
perform the installation as illustrated in the official Subaru Service manual.
[NOTES For OTHERS] Install the Conrod with the (
) mark logo facing the front. At times you may
need to heat up the piston ( up to 60 - 70 ℃) to installing the Piston Pin.

6. PISTON & CONROD INSTALLATION
(1) Apply oil to the Cylinder wall surface, to the Pistons outer
sides and to the Conrods bearing surface.
(2) Check that the Piston Rings Gaps are in the correct position
prior to installing the piston into the block.
(3) Check for the pistons position is facing the front and use the
piston slider to install the Piston and Conrod into the Cylinder.
(4) Verify the Conrod and Conrod Cap are the correct match when
assembling the Conrods to the Crankshaft.
(5) Tighten the Conrod bolts to the specified torque specs as
shown below.

※ REFERENCE: The bolt will have 0.12 - 0.15mm of stretch
with the above settings.
NOTE
Please do not guess the angle if you do not have the Angle
Wrench tool as you will risk the bolts from breaking and
possible engine failure. A Dial Angle Wrench is highly
recommended.
