Congratulations to everyone in the district who met their 3rd Marking Period Goal. We had a
new first this period...everyone in the Lawrence/Nelson Elementary met their goal. This takes a
lot of hard work by the students and the teachers. Overall 22 classes across the district met
their goal. Over the last year, 30,961 books – 315,501,148 words have been read by our
students. This represents almost a
four fold increase in circulation
across the district. Congratulations
to all. The students enjoyed the
morning, with our own version of
American Idol, hosted by Howie,
Sharon and Howard. Three fine
groups showed off their talents with
Dr. Perni's group showing the most
originality with their Enlargement Machine.
It was the only act that
incorporated reading...taking small books, making them bigger. This showed
the students that you can start small,
but work towards bigger success in reading, education and in life.
The next game was MazeRunner and Duck, Duck, Glue running at the same time. While the
district's highest achieving students ran the school looking for their cards all of the the other
students across the district duck taped their principal or teacher to the wall. When all was said and
done, Mr. Boelhower was the last one left "standing" or taped to the wall.
Then we played, Did I Just Eat That? A game filled with
crazy jelly beans...was that chocolate pudding or canned
dog food, licorice or skunk spray, caramel popcorn or
vomit? The only way to find out was by chewing and
finding out...several faces showed that they were not ready for the challenge.
The last game was Plinko, built by our very own Bob "the Builder" Theer. The highlight of the day
was when Tifphani Stratton, the districts highest achiever won the set of Beats headphones. She
was a very excited student. Another awesome win, was Kaleb Whitmore winning a new bicycle.
Many more prizes were handed out including games, dolls, skates and iTune Cards. Every
student that met their goal was given the opportunity to go ice skating at the Events Center in
Kearney. Many smiles and many happy faces were seen on all!
Track your students goals online. Please make sure yout student is reading within in their goal range. The best way to improve your
reading skills are to read something you enjoy. We want our students to be successful by becoming better readers. Reading is a skill
every student will use for the rest of their lives, this is an important skill for life. We appreciate everyone's help and continued support.

CAREER PATHWAYS: A recent study indicates that more than half of students from the middle class
who start college do not graduate within eight years. Also concerning is that only 20-28 percent of
students coming from low-income families graduate (Luhby, 2015).
According to the U.S. Department of Education, one-third of college students drop out because of the
escalating costs of college. For the other two-thirds the reasons are mostly personal.
April 3rd ...................NO SCHOOL
Is increasing college costs worth it? College is worth it and employability and wages are two
of the big reasons why.

The median weekly wage for someone with a master’s degree or higher is $3,300 and $1,140 for
people earning a bachelor’s degree. While those only receiving a high school diploma receive just
$448 per month (Brimley, Verstegen, and Gardield, 2012).

It can be disappointing that a third of college graduates wind up with a job that does not require a
college degree (Kurtz, 2015); however, having a bachelor’s degree does vastly improve a person’s
opportunity for employment.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, workers 25 or older with less than a high
school degree had a 9 percent unemployment rate, while those with a bachelor’s degree had a 2.6
percent unemployment rate. College dropouts had a 5.7 percent unemployment rate.
The rate on investment of earning college degrees considers the cost of college and the wages college
graduates can receive as compared to high school graduates until age 65. When those factors are
considered engineering and math/computers have the highest rate on investment at 21 and 18 percent
respectively. Business has another high return rate at 17 percent, while degrees in the social sciences
is 15 percent (Kurtz, 2014).
It is important for high schools to begin connecting students with college courses in their career
interests early. College is expensive and statistics show that students must have a clear career goal in
mind when entering college or they may not finish.
Next year at Lawrence-Nelson and Sandy Creek, we will begin offering college credit career pathway
programs in drafting/engineering, graphic/technical arts, business, and agriculture. Students will be
able to take twelve college credits their junior and senior years that will earn them a certificate offering
them an opportunity to go straight to work or continue to receive a more advanced college degree,
which can lead to higher salaries.
This year Lawrence-Nelson and Sandy Creek offers 30 college credits. Next year they will offer 78
college credits. In 2016-17, plans are to add college credit career pathway programs in advanced
manufacturing, automotive/transportation, and welding. This would push college credit opportunities
over 100.
Lawrence-Nelson and Sandy Creek already offer non-college credit career pathway programs in
automotive and health care. Each program earns students valuable skills to help them to be
employable and continue on with a college degree program. The district may add non-college credit
career pathway programs in computer programming, law, education, and culinary arts during the next
couple years.
Employers are searching for well educated and high skilled workers. At Lawrence-Nelson and Sandy
Creek, we are partnering with Central Community College to provide our students with college and
career opportunities in high demand and high rate on investment careers by their junior year in high
school.

THE BIG BAD MUSICAL: The middle school’s performance of the Big Bad Musical March 20-22
was a big success. Students worked hard since January to make this musical happen. The
students who participated had a lot of fun and learned a lot about how musicals come together
and are performed. Students who participated are: Chorus - Makenzie Dane, Jason
Brockman,Jenna Jo Meers, Sydney Grimm – Samantha Janda Fairy Godmother – Rami Hinrichs
Little Red Riding Hood – Alyssa Ackerman Grandmother Hood – Grace Messenger Pig One - Jon

Kristen Rohrer Judge Wise Old Woman- Sanie Davis Bailiff – Sterling Orcutt Evil Stepmother –
Atley Van Emmerik Miss Muffit – Calie Schliep Crew-- Cassie Perry.
Big Bad also had a number of Adults giving their time and talents, which lead to the success of the show. Sandy Creek would like to give a
huge thank you to those who helped with the performances: Stage Director - Donna Hastings
Music Director - Brett Dorcey Choreography - Aly Perry Costumes - Nancy Farrell, Cheryl
Blum Set Design & Construction - Corey VomWeg, Donna Hastings Lighting Design - Erik
Nielsen Makeup - Traci Specht, Lillian Finkenbinder, Patrick Crawford, Corey VomWeg Hair Ben Larson. Sandy Creek would like to thank the Hastings Community
Theater for providing such a wonderful venue for our
students to perform in. The experience on a stage built for
theater was a tremendous opportunity for the students.
DINNER THEATER: Sandy Creek Drama presented, “And the Bride Wore…Act I
& Act II” on Friday, March 27th. The interactive “Whodunit” included action and
entertainment for all of the VIP guests and even a little sushi. Senior, Wade
Wenske’s grandmother, Marilyn Keim was the winner of the $50.00 prize for
correctly solving who stole the priceless Armitage Sapphire & Diamond Ring.
There was a Costume Contest for VIP guests who went the extra mile and
dressed up like part of the wedding party. On the Hillbilly side, Bob Siemsen and
Darlene Shaw won and on the
Southern Gentry side Atley
VanEmmerck and Devoney Keeler
won. After walking the catwalk to
strut their stuff, all went home with a
plaque and an Eileen’s cookie. The
end of the night saw a few tears as
all of the drama members shared a special dance with their parents or someone special during
the traditional Bride & Father-of the Bride dance. They danced to “Don’t Blink,” just a friendly
reminder to all of the seniors and their parents to not let any of these final memories slip away
without stopping to appreciate them. Finally we had to follow Georgie’s last rule from his
toast…every wedding reception includes the “Chicken Dance,” led by Jade Armitage in the
famous canary yellow bridesmaid dress, feathers and all.
The drama student members, Mame Hild and Sharon Radabaugh would like to thank everyone for their support. Special thanks to Bob
Theer, Janie Corman, Deb Schmoldt, Amy Tomlinson, JoAnn Bischoff, Holly Bischoff, Tiffany Yost, Geneice Smith and especially Tod
McDaniel for the extra help and support this year. Thank you again and we hope everyone enjoyed a great night!

READY FOR PBIS II: Towards the end of this school year will mark the end of the third semester that
we have worked to implement PBIS I. This focuses on non-classroom setting expectations and we
have continued to review these expectations on a weekly basis in Focus Time. After a visit from our
PBIS coach Dennis Moore we received word from him that we were ready to move on to the next
stage. PBIS II focuses on classroom setting expectations. We just completed a self-assessment survey
with our entire staff to see if we have done a good job with implementing this process in our school. We
meet on a monthly basis to discuss what needs to be done and if there are problems that occur in
certain areas or times that need to be looked at to improve. We will look at the data from the selfassessment survey with our entire staff and discuss any concerns that may arise and address issues.
!We will apply for PBIS II to see if we will be accepted to continue to move into classroom expectations.
If accepted our team will attend two days of training on June 11th and 12th in Lincoln. In these
meetings we attend, our team networks with many other teams across the state. With so many ideas
presented we have to find the right fit for our school and determine what will work best for our students.
For example we have taught non-classroom expectations by using student and staff created videos.
Also we have done school wide assemblies along with Kahoot competitions as we continue to review
expectations. As we move into PBIS II we will have to be even more creative keeping the attention of
the students. This fall we plan to make commercials to play on Cougar Vision during home activities,
which also will be shown to all parents and patrons of the district.
!TRACK AND GOLF SEASON:
It is hard to believe but the golf and track seasons are under way.
Both teams have already had a couple weeks of practice to start off the spring season. Track had their
opening indoor meet at Concordia. This year it was almost 80 degrees outside and we were indoors
for the first track meet of the season. Usually the outdoor meets will bring the wind and rain.
!
!
!
NESA TESTING: I have scheduled NeSA testing that began March 25th
with Math in the High School. Grades 6th & 7th will be tested in the
area of reading and math. Grades 8th & 11th will also be tested in the
area of math, reading and also science. I would ask that you have
conversation with your child at home by just making sure they are in the
mindset to do their best. It is also a good idea to make sure they are
well rested and have a good nutritional breakfast but I would ask for that
on any given school day.
Throughout the school year we put a lot of emphasis on these test more so making sure
we lead the teachers to teach to the standards that are set by the state. These standards
are sometimes very specific in certain areas where other times they are very broad and
cover a wide range of information. Throughout the year teacher’s spiral information making
sure students review information so they can recall it when tested in the spring.
Teachers meet in subject area PLC’s and collaborate with one another to improve overall student
achievement. The discussion they have in their meetings include setting Smart Goals showing
growth over the course of the year and certain areas they want to improve. Some goals have been set
directly around a certain state standard because the teachers have not been satisfied with the growth
in a certain area. Other discussions have been with curriculum mapping making sure teachers are
aware of what is being taught in any grade level so we do not see a lot of overlap. Other discussion
that occurs on a regular basis is engagement strategies for the classroom.
!
Finally, when the school year is all over we look at the scores that come out in middle to late June
and see where we are. We generally are please with the results in the majority of
areas but always can find areas that need improvement. We always have to realize
each year that we have a different set of students taking the test except for the lower
grades where we can track some growth up to 8th grade. The good thing over the past
couple of years is we continue to show growth and make the necessary adjustments to
meet the student’s needs.

The Clay County Health Department will be conducting a special
Immunization clinic for school-age children on Tuesday, August 11, 2015,
between the hours of 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. The suggested cost is $3.00 per
immunization. They must be under 19 years of age and accompanied by a
parent or legal guardian. The address is 209 N Calvary Ave, Clay Center, NE
68933. The phone number is 402-762-3571.

!
School-age children are also welcome to come to the regular clinic for these vaccinations, which is held on the third Tuesday of each
month from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.
!GO BIG RED!!! We will be attending the Huskers Spring Game on Saturday, April 11th.
We
will be attending a graduating ceremony for the Senior TeamMates and a participating in a drug
free pledge. This should be a great day for all who participate.
!We would like to welcome Steph Hoyt as a new mentor to our team! Steph is an elementary
SPED teacher at Sandy Creek and we are excited to have her join the team!
!
Our students recently completed the annual survey. Here are some great things they had to say about TeamMates: “It gives me a fun
opportunity to get my mind off school if I have a bad day.” “TeamMates is just amazing!” “TeamMates is about kids having and feeling
like they have potential to succeed.” “A TeamMate is an adult that wants to be a friend.”
We have students who are on the waiting list for a mentor. If you would like to learn more about the TeamMates program, you can get
ahold of Brenda Searle [email protected] or Darcie Boman at [email protected] or call us at school.
The advisory board and coordinators would like to thank everyone who donated to our program this year. We have had a very
successful year and that would not be possible without the support that we have received from our communities. We would also like
to thank all of the mentors for donating their time to this program as well. The caring adults who mentor are the heart of our program.
THANK YOU!!

SPEECH: The Sandy Creek Speech Team ended a successful season, with one student qualifying for the state competition in
Kearney. Garrett Uecker will compete in Extemporaneous Speaking on Thursday, March 26, at the C-1 state competition at UNK. Uecker
placed 3rd at the district contest at Thayer Central on March 16. Other students placing at the district competition were Garrett Orcutt-7th in
Extemp, and Uecker and Orcutt-6th in Duet.
!SNC CONFERENCE QUIZ BOWL TOURNAMENT:
Monday, March 9th at Fillmore Central Middle School in Fairmont. Twelve teams
representing seven conference schools participated. Two teams from Sandy Creek competed. The tournament is a double elimination
bracket with teams being placed in the bracket by random drawing. A toss-up question (worth 5 points) is asked. If a team member correctly
answers the toss-up a bonus question (worth 10 points) is given to the team. This means that the smallest margin of victory is 5 points and a
15 point difference represents a very close match.
!Sandy Creek Black Team was comprised of Natasha Anderson, Matt Rohrer, John Uecker, and McKensi Uecker. In the first round the team
faced Centennial Blue and lost in a close contest by a score of 40 to 50. In their second match the team faced David City Black, losing by a
score of 20 to 35 to end their day of competition.
!Sandy Creek Red Team was comprised of Emmet Caldwell, Rachel Shackelford, Jaedin Switzer, and
Garrett Uecker. The team beat David City Red by the score of 60 to 30, followed by a victory over
Wilber-Clatonia White 35 to 20. In the third match the team faced Centennial Blue, winning decisively
70 to 5. This led to a match with the only other undefeated team in the tournament, Fillmore Central
Black. Sandy Creek prevailed 65 to 40. Fillmore Central Purple was victorious in the consolation
bracket and joined Sandy Creek as the only two teams left in the tournament. Sandy Creek lost the
match 15 to 40, however, since this was Sandy Creek’s first loss they were not eliminated from the
tournament. One final match for the championship was held and Sandy Creek Red won decisively,
100 to 25, making Sandy Creek Red the SNC Conference Champion Quiz Bowl Team!
!Coach Pernicek and the Sandy Creek Quiz Bowl team members thank Dawn Caldwell and Jeff
Switzer for attending the tournament to offer support. It was greatly appreciated.

LIBRARY CORNER: As you know the South Central Unified District has made a commitment to increase time spent reading as well
as improve reading scores. With the implementation of the Accelerated Reader program, the library circulation has increased by 34%
district wide. We would like to congratulate all students who met their AR goal 3rd quarter!! We continue to encourage you to read 4th
quarter as well as during the summer months!
!April is School library media month, Poetry month and International Children's book day on April 2nd, which is on Hans Christian
Andersen's birthday. What a great time to share a poem or your favorite book.
!The more we read, the better we get at it. After all, practice makes perfect and reading is no different. Reading also stimulates our
brains, helps improve our concentration, and improves our vocabulary. Reading is a learning experience that helps stimulates the
imagination and is a great source of entertainment. Reading is also therapeutic by helping to relax the body and calm the mind.
Students who practice reading do better in school and develop skills for life-long learning. It is important to keep up your reading
practices over the summer. The following public libraries are available and many have summer reading programs you won’t want to
miss. The Hastings Public library also has a wonderful summer program where students and adults can earn prizes and have fun with
other readers. (Hours as well as a list of activities can be accessed online)

Sandy Creek FFA Excels at District Career Development Event: The Sandy Creek FFA has been extremely busy since the
beginning of February. On February 7th, eight senior FFA members tested and interviewed for their State
FFA Degrees at Blue Hill. Emmet Caldwell also interviewed for Star in Production award. All eight
seniors of Matt Rohrer, Logan Wenske, Jake Veik, Emmet Caldwell, Colton Shuck, Erika Harms,
Natasha Anderson and Kody Illingworth passed their interview and record book review and will receive
their degrees at State FFA Convention in April.
!In February, the chapter celebrated National FFA Week by completing several activities.
The chapter
completed a Penny Drive with the elementary with all proceeds being donated to the Heifer International
Project. The elementary raised a total of $437 with Mrs. Spurling’s class winning with $65.02. The
chapter raised around $600 and will be sending goats to Africa to help combat hunger. Also during FFA
week the chapter hosted a teacher appreciation snack bar, drive your tractor to school day, emblem find,
and an ice cream social on Friday. Lastly, the chapter helped out the South Central Cattlemen’s
Association by serving drinks at the annual Valentine’s Day Ball in Hastings on February 15th.
!
On March 11th, the chapter traveled to Hastings CCC to compete in district Career Development Events. The Ag Sales team of
Jaeden Traudt, Jake Johnson, Colton Shuck and Kolt Illingworth placed first and qualified for state. The Livestock management team
of Emmet Caldwell, Brook Svoboda, Kody Illingworth, Holly Nolan, Natasha Anderson and Matt Rohrer placed first and qualified for
state. The Nursery/Landscape team of Katrina Anderson, Carie Ahrens, Kyle Rohrer and Desma Hamilton placed third. The
Agriscience team of Tayler Johnson, Tae Binder, Kevin Johnson, Peyton Johnson, Bayley Cox, Greg Pavelka and Ryan Haack placed
seventh. The Floriculture team of Monda Rivers, Amanda Scott, Hannah Friend and Brianna Sorgen placed sixth. The Welding team
of Logan Wenske, Chandler Soucie and Grant Schiermeyer placed eighth. In all, Sandy Creek has five teams qualified for state: Ag
Communications, Ag Sales, Livestock Management, Marketing Plan and Agriscience. Six, Agriscience fair projects will also be
presented and Natasha Anderson will compete in Sr Public Speaking.
!Upcoming events for the chapter, State FFA Convention, Officer interviews for 2015-2016 school year, Banquet on May 1
and the
FFA plant sale. Please follow us at Sandy Creek FFA on Facebook, we will be posting results from state as they happen as well as
posting pictures of the plants for the plant sale.

STATE FFA DEGREE’S EARNED: I received word from Ms. Tomlinson that the following
students will receive their State FFA Degree's this year. Erika Harms, Natasha Anderson,
Emmet Caldwell, Jake Veik, Kody Illingworth, Logan Wenske, Matt Rohrer, and Colton
Shuck. They will receive their degree on April 10th in Lincoln. I commend these seniors
for their effort in obtaining their degrees and am hopeful that they will want to continue on
to receive their American Degree in another year.
!Congrats to all of the FFA members who participated in CDE's. The Livestock
Management Team and Ag Sales Team placed first at districts and qualified for state.
Nursey/Landscape placed 3rd, Agriscience placed 7th and Floriculture placed 7th.
!
SENIOR SKI TRIP TO THE MOUNTAINS: Once again the seniors had a great time on
a school-sponsored trip to the mountains. It is always fun to hear students say how
impressed they are with the scenery of the mountains. Their faces were glued to the
windows of the bus all the way through the mountain pass going into Winter Park. Once
they arrived at the YMCA of the Rockies the students went to roller skate. It was
interesting to see students do something that they all struggled with but had fun together
as a class.
! The second day they had a chance to either ski or
snowboard. From 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. they were able to
learn on the bunny slopes then decide whether they
needed lessons. After that short hour the majority of
students picked up skiing pretty well. Seven students decided
they needed lessons and spent the next two hours learning how
to ski. By the end of the day the majority of the students were
either skiing or snowboarding down green and blue slopes. That
night then the students made a trip into Frazier to the tubing hill.
The class decided to hold onto each other along with sponsors
and all go down at once. This was fun once again to see the
entire class bond together and have fun with each other.
!
The final day of skiing we experienced some tired students that were ready to ski for
the morning before heading back to Nebraska. The students learned that the slopes
were a little faster in the morning with some ice compared to the afternoon when the
snow has softened. I want to thank all the sponsors for the help and for the students
being excellent and just having a great time together! For up to date - current information & schedule changes go to ...southcentralunified.org

Middle School Musical: Thank you to Mr. Brett Dorcey and Mrs. Donna Hastings for directing this
year’s middle school musical the Big Bad Wolf. Because of the generosity of the Hastings Community
Theater our students were able to perform the production in a their theater. This was a learning
experience for our youngsters as the directors took the time to teach about the theater along with
produce the musical. Congratulations to a very tired and satisfied play cast and crew.
!AR Celebration: The middle and high school students whom made their third quarter AR goal were
reinforced by a day of skating at the Vireo Event Center in Kearney. 160 students and staff enjoyed
this memorable event. Several of the Storm Hockey team members were present. The improvement
from the start to the end of skate time of those students and staff whom had limited amount of skating
experience—myself included--was impressive.
!NeSA Testing: State testing has begun at the high school and will before long in the middle school.
The students have been working on the state standards all year and our teachers have continued to
reinforce and reteach the standards towards mastery. Please be sure to schedule appointments on
days other than testing dates as it is difficult for students to have the same mind frame on an
alternative day that they do when all of their peers are testing.
!State Speech:
Garrett Uecker qualified for state speech in Kearney and competed in the
Extemporaneous Speaking contest. This event involves drawing a current event topic and then having
one hour to prepare a speech. Garrett has worked to not only prepare a solid speech, but to also
deliver it without a notecard. Congratulations on a good year to Garrett, but also to Mrs. Tobias and
the entire speech team.
