Florence-Carlton School Honors Veterans-November 11, 2014
Thank you for Serving our Country
2014 Veteran's Day Assembly by Bob Edgar
Florence-Carlton’s high school and middle school celebrated Veterans’ Day this year with a ceremony on the morning of November 11th. Max
Carpenter, a veteran of several conflicts, spoke to students about his service with a unit in Afghanistan made up of a majority of Montana-born
troops. He also presented a slide show produced by a member of the unit which was well-received by students. Captain Gatlin of the Wounded
Warriors Project filled students in on some of the needs and issues faced by returning service men and women, and told students how they could
help with the Project.
Students chipped in as well, as the ceremony opened with a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by the high school choir, and the full
concert band contributed a patriotic medley. Thanks also to Danielle Thayer, Bridger Dragoo, Dawson Thrasher, and Emaly Strickland for their
part in honoring our veterans.
And most of all, thank you, veterans.
The Florence-Carlton parents, school and community will provide a safe, respectful environment that strives to prepare all students to become responsible, lifelong learners by
empowering them with the integrity, knowledge and skills to contribute to a changing world.
Check Out What’s Happing in the Middle School
Spooky Story Competition by Taryn Pettit
In October, the Ravalli Republic invited students to write
the spookiest story they could write. Students from throughout the Bitterroot Valley participated in the newspaper’s
Write Fright contest. 3rd through 6th graders were
challenged to write spooky stories of no more than 100
words. 7th and 8th graders were limited to 200 words.
Rather than students asking, “How long does it have to be?”
they were asking, “Can I please write more? It’s impossible
to keep them so short!” It was a great opportunity to learn
the art of crafting and revising a short, short story, and our
students rose to the challenge! We have winners!

Florence Middle School Celebrates our Student Job Holders
The middle school rewarded our student job holders with a pizza party during
lunch. For the second year, the middle school has “employed” students with jobs to
help them learn new skills. All job holders have completed applications and work in
different capacities.
The W elcoming Committee with Ms. Bristow has been successful in helping new
students transition to our school. New students are assigned a mentor to shadow
their first day. Student welcoming committee members are encouraged to keep
checking in with their mentees throughout the school year.
Congratulations to 8th grader Amisa Ji, who won first place
and received a $25 gift card for her story “Friends Forever”
and 4th grader William Wagner who won 3rd place for “The
Ghost”. Their stories were published in the October 31st
edition of the Ravalli Republic. Florence Carlton School is
fortunate to have such creative students!

Mrs. Riffey’s Science students learn what you can do with a mousetrap, and the different type of insulation.
What do you do with a mousetrap, plastic spoon and pumpkin peep?
Have a Pumpkin Chuckin challenge! 8th grade science students spent
Halloween working in teams to see who could launch a pumpkin peep
the farthest, highest, and with the most accuracy. Excitement with seeing their designs work, as well as problem solving when things went
wrong kept students thinking and collaborating to have the best mousetrap catapult.
Hearing students say, “Can we do something like this again?” will
guarantee that more STEM design challenges will be happening
throughout the year.
During this last week, students learned about how different types of insulation can slow the transfer of energy in the form of heat. To do this
students had to design and build an insulated cooler that would keep
and ice cube from melting the longest. First place winners from each
section were:
Period 1: Group 2: John Lineback, Rocky Verrue, and Trevyn Wood
Period 6: Zach Henderson and Hattie Stevens
Period 7: Group 6: Zach Blomquist, Haleigh Irwin, Destiny Jones, and

Dear Parent(s) of high school students,
These are the days your student will want to remember forever. Help make the year unforgettable by purchasing a 2015 Falcon Yearbook.
For only $50.00, your student will have a book that will be enjoyed now and 20, 30 or even 50 years from now. You also can make the yearbook
extra special by purchasing name stamping, icons that your child chooses, and a protective plastic cover.
Buy online with credit card, debit card or PayPal at yearbookforever.com or at school with a check made payable to FCS or cash to Mrs. Briney.
Order now, so your student won’t miss out when the yearbook is distributed around May 25, 2015.
Taking photos this year? At the game, the dance, the musical? Share them by using Community Upload! When you submit your amazing photos to
the yearbook staff via Community Upload, your pictures have a chance to be featured in the yearbook!
Senior photos and baby/toddler photos are due January 15, 2015 for yearbook submission. Email [email protected].
Submit your photos now with Community Upload:
1. Go to yearbookforever.com.
2. Under Community Upload, enter access code falconfans
and click Enter.
3. Click Upload Photo to begin uploading your photos.
As an adult, you know how important high school memories become. The yearbook staffs goal is to get all high school students in the book three
times. Don’t let your student’s memories fade; make sure they get a yearbook!
Sincerely,
Keri Briney

Florence-Carlton Student Council Helping our Community
Hello everyone! It’s your friendly neighborhood Student Council here, reminding you of
all the wonderful events we’ve got coming up
in the month of December.
Our annual food drive is revving up on
December 1st, and will continue through the
22nd. All the food we collect will be donated
to the local food bank, Pantry Partners of
Stevensville. Students, be sure to participate
in the drive so our school can reach our goal of
5,000 lbs, a record for Florence.
It’s 5,000 lbs or bust! If you’re a community
member, come to the school’s Christmas Bazaar on the 6th, to help us “stuff a turkey” with
cans. Look for the cardboard turkey in the Old
Gym. Also, this year we are partnering with
Gary and Leo’s IGA, who will be selling certificates for bags of food that will be donated
to Pantry Partners.
Another winter Student Council activity is our
shopping spree, when members of our group
take deserving children to buy Christmas
presents and enjoy a lunch in Missoula.
As always, if you’d like to donate to this
wonderful cause, please contact Student
Council president Kristyne Drozdz at [email protected]. We’d love your support!
Again, keep a look out for other ways you can
help your community by getting involved
with our charitable activities. Happy Holidays
from your Student Council.

Kindergarten Class Celebrates the Letter “B”
Mrs. Bolton’s kindergarten class celebrated the letter B by baking
bread and shaking cream into butter for our Beary Berry Bread and
Butter Brunch. It took us 3 hours to bake the bread and about 25
minutes of counting and shaking to achieve the sweet, yellow butter.
Our teddy bears joined us for our brunch. We read the story, Jamberry,
which prepared us to select a favorite jam to put on our bread. First,
we tried our bread with our homemade butter. Then we tried the bread
with the jam. Yummy!
Fifth Grade Students presents Rhythms of the River
All 5th grade students will be presenting Rhythms of the River, their musical presentation for this school year on Wednesday, December 10, 2014
on the stage in the F-C Old Gym at 7:00 pm. The students will use Orff
instruments, recorders, and untuned percussion instruments to accompany
a variety of pieces including The River is Flowing,
Mayim Mayim, Peace Like a River, plus many others.
The 5th grade band students will be making their debut performance at
this concert, as well! As it is still very early in their instrument playing
careers, they will be demonstrating the things they’ve learned thus far. A
first performance is always incredibly exciting for the students – we hope
you enjoy!
Please join Mrs. Sayler, Mrs. Kirby, and their student teacher, Mr. Hoffman for this musical event.
Student artwork, created in Mrs. Hartman’s art classes, will also be on
display.

Safety for Our Children’s Sake
FCPT Needs Your Help
Dear Parents and Community Members,
The Elementary and Middle School Parent Groups (FCPT) are gearing up
for this year’s Holiday Bazaar on December 6, 2014. we are looking to put
together gift baskets for a silent auction table. Each grade will have a
theme and we are asking for donations for these baskets.
Recently the topic of safety around the schools was brought up. For
the most part schools are one of the safest places in most towns.
There are lots of adults looking after students, making sure they are
doing the right thing. One of the things that most schools do is bring
in drug dogs to check for drugs or other contraband. We recently did
just that at the high school. The dogs are trained to hit on illegal
drugs, prescription drugs, over the counter medication, alcohol, tobacco including vapor cigarettes that contain nicotine, gun powder and
explosives. During this search we did have several “hits”. Most of
the time it was for over the counter medication but we did find some
illegal drugs and an almost empty beer bottle. Please have a conversation with your children about the dangers of illegal drug use, underage drinking and tobacco use. If you have a student that drives check
their vehicle occasionally, check your child’s backpack too. Our goal
is not to punish students but to educate them on the effects of the
choices they make. Hopefully together we can educate our children
to make healthy choices!
Another concern is cell phone usage while driving both by students
and adults. Many times I have seen students texting while driving
almost as soon as they pull out of the parking lot. Distracted driving
is an accident waiting to happen! One parent suggested that everyone
stop using their cell phones when driving near the school. When
driving by the school in the morning or afternoon it is extremely important that we all focus on the task at hand “driving safely and
watching out for pedestrians and other vehicles”. Please obey the directions of the crossing guards and be on alert for students crossing
Long Ave. where there is no crosswalk or guard. If you have students
who cross Long Ave to meet you or to walk home encourage them to
go to the intersection and use the crosswalk where the guard is at.

A Visit from Senator Tester
Senator Tester stopped by to visit with Mrs. McCann’s 1st Grade and Mrs. Blomquist’s 4th grade on Friday November 21st. It was a special treat
arranged by Senator Tester’s niece, who has children in both classrooms. Senator Tester read a book about Washington DC to the entire group and
added personal stories as he went. The students really enjoyed learning about DC and listening the Senator. At the end students asked questions
including “Are you a Democrat or Republican?” To which he jokingly replied that he was a “Montanan.” Then of course told them he was a
Democrat. The students also tested him with questions like, “Why are there so many rooms in the White House and How far up the Washington
Monument does the color of stone change.” He was just as impressed with the kids questions as they were with his answers. It was a special treat
for all those involved and we are thankful that he made the time to visit.
