Historic Graduation
This year’s Commencement ceremony featured far and away the largest graduating class in our 69-year
history. With 200 students receiving their degrees, we had to move off campus to the lovely auditorium
at Adventure Christian Church in order to accommodate the more than 2500 people who attended.
This was the first class with students who took all four years of their classes on the Rocklin campus.
From prelude to postlude, the event was filled with excitement as we sent these young warriors forth to
be “world changers” for our Lord!
Pat Gelsinger delivered the Commencement address. Pat is Senior Vice President and co-General

best into the lives of over 200 young men and women who, as Christ-centered servant leaders, will
make a difference in ministry, education, business, politics, and in their families. Most of us are aware
of some of the moral issues in public higher education. In one local state college student newspaper,
a student recently wrote a pornographic article all in the name of “free speech.” Many colleges and

WJU Offers New Degree in History
“History is one of the essential disciplines in a Christian Liberal Arts education,”
said David Nystrom, Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Along with Bible,
Theology, and English, history forms the core of our educational enterprise, the
center of our project of helping students learn how to think in a fashion that is
thoroughly biblical and Christian.”
The faculty include three WJU veterans. Dr. Rex Gurney will serve as
the first chair of the history department. Rex holds a Ph.D. in American
history and has overseen general education at WJU. Dr. Merilyn

focus on ancient, European and American history, with a program of
study in the field of archaeology to follow.
Glen Gibson to join the WJU faculty as a
professor of Intercultural Studies
In the fall of 2008 Dr. Glen Gibson will join the WJU faculty as professor
of Intercultural Studies. Dr. Gibson holds a Ph.D. in Intercultural
Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, an M.A in Intercultural
Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary, and an M.A. in Missions
from Hope International University. From 2003 until 2008 Dr. Gibson
was Director of Training and the Field Coordinator for Team Expansion,
a worldwide church planting organization. Prior to this he was a
missionary serving in the Philippines. Dr. Gibson combines personal

CHANGE is the Word in Degree Completion
Change is not always welcome and always hard to manage. But the changes in DCP offer exciting
ways to help our adult students complete their degree with greater flexibility and opportunities than
ever before. These changes were made as a result of several studies, recommendations and reviews
of other successful degree completion programs. With the information we acquired, we are excited
about our ability to more effectively offer opportunities for adults to finish their degrees and respond to
the current trends in higher education.
What are these Changes?

In response, we are launching a new program called PreMajor which
allows students with as few as 30 transferable units to start in DCP.
When the students have accumulated approximately 60 units between
transferable units and PreMajor they may officially enter the Major
classes in their program. Classes offered in PreMajor include general
education and free electives and are offered in the same working adultfriendly compressed manner as Major courses.

Sharon Stenger has recently joined the team as the Academic

recently completed a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology.

The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 by a joint
resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by
President Harry Truman. The National Day of Prayer’s mission is “to
communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance
and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to intercede for
America and its leadership in the seven centers of power: Church,
Education, Family, Business, Government, Military and Media.” This
year’s National Day of Prayer theme was “Prayer! America’s Strength
and Shield.”

Educational Advisory Council
A group of over 35 educators and administrators met in April to provide
valuable input and direction to WJU’s Teacher Education Department.
Superintendents and principals provide invaluable guidance to the
program, which enjoys a positive relationship with local districts for
student placement at the end of the program. State Assemblyman Ted
Gaines, who represents the 4th District (and father of current WJU
student Amy) addressed the group and opened a dialogue to how state
issues are affecting education.

Campus Ministries and Missions
William Jessup University sent three international mission teams this year. A group served over winter
break in a Christian Hostel in Amsterdam. Several students and staff departed for Honduras and
another group travelled to Tanzania in May. In addition, WJU hosted its Inaugural Mission Banquet
on February 23rd to share about our programs and raise funds for future development. The event was
a wonderful success! About 80 people attended and over $3,000 was raised for WJU Missions. Here’s

Pat Gelsinger Recipient of Honorary Degree
in Intel’s history and served as the company’s first Chief Technology
Officer.
He holds six technical patents and three degrees in Electrical
Engineering: an AA degree from Lincoln Technical Institute; a BS from
Santa Clara University, and a MS from Stanford University.
Pat has been an instrumental supporter of WJU and has lent his
considerable leadership skills and energy to the University for years. He is responsible for the leadership and momentum behind much
of the University’s success in capital fundraising and, in addition to
his leadership of the University’s Foundation, has also served on the
Board of Trustees. For his extensive contributions to technology and
education, he was confered with an honorary degree of D. Litt.
An honorary degree signifies that the recipient demonstrates a
personal Christian commitment; contributes exceptional service to
the church, community and humanity; exhibits a serious commitment
to lifelong, continuous learning and growth; supports the mission
of William Jessup University; is a person of integrity and is held in
high regard both personally and professionally by his community and
colleagues. The only other recipient of an honorary Doctor of Divinity
degree from this institution is the college’s founder, William Jessup, in
1989, at the 50th anniversary celebration of San Jose Bible College.

Of the over 200 graduates to walk across the stage at Commencement, 26 represented the first four-year graduates who began and ended
their college careers on the Rocklin campus. These students, described by President Jessup as “originals and pioneers,” took a leap of faith
and enrolled as freshmen at a college whose physical campus was under construction at the time of their application. President Jessup and
the Administrative Council celebrated their success at a special reception on May 16.

When my family arrived in the United States, we had only $60 and
needed help badly. That is all we were allowed to bring from India as
students. Praise God for SJCC where I was given a full scholarship to

to this wonderful institution.
Today Christ Church of India is able to support more than 50

of churches, helped several orphanages, hospitals and clinics, and
financed students to finish their medical training as doctors and

Gerald Martinez
B.S., Pastoral Ministry, 1979
On January 15, 2007, the Martinez family of Albuquerque, NM was
surprised to receive the news that Ty and the gang of “Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition” would be transforming their insufficient,
run-down duplex used as a refuge for the needy and homeless into a
larger and more safe home for
their family.
When Gerald Martinez was
offered a job at a local church in
Albuquerque, he quickly moved
his family of seven from Colorado
to New Mexico. Before moving
to New Mexico, Gerald spent
much of his time making trips to
help the troubled communities of
Albuquerque. Instead of moving into a safe neighborhood for his wife
Liesa and kids, Gerald moved his family into a run-down duplex that was
just minutes away from the church.
In a neighborhood of crime, drug deals, and prostitution, Gerald
began transforming the church into a refuge for the needy. This refuge
included a café, daycare facility, and working bathroom with showers
so the homeless had a place
to clean up. The community
welcomed the Martinez family
and was very grateful for all of
their hard work. However, there
were some that did not take a
liking to Gerald and even attacked
him with a glass bottle in front
of his own house.
Still, Gerald
Liesa and Gerald
managed to work together with
the community and quickly
transformed an area once called “the War Zone” into a new and better
place now called “God’s Block.” As crime rates decreased and the
community began getting media attention, Gerald purchased two other
duplexes that would be used to create the “Mission Outpost,” a place
where broken people could recover from their troubles. With an open
door policy, many people were making use of the Outpost. The Martinez
family was finally connecting with their neighbors, but they also began
to lose their own family privacy.
Soon enough, the family began to undergo financial difficulties as
well, considering they do not charge rent. Although the family has
made a great impact on the transformed community, they did not have
enough space for themselves to live in. They didn’t have a working stove
and used hot plates to do their cooking. With little privacy and on the
verge of financial ruin, the Martinez family was in severe need of a new
and safe home where they could continue their mission to save the
town of Trumbull.
Extreme Makeover provided them with a new private
residence and expanded facility in which to carry out their ministry.
