SPRING 2008 William Jessup University Celebrates 2008 Commencement Pat Gelsinger Receives Honorary Doctorate See What’s New in Academics President’s Corner Historic Graduation This year’s Commencement ceremony featured far and away the largest graduating class in our 69-year history. With 200 students receiving their degrees, we had to move off campus to the lovely auditorium at Adventure Christian Church in order to accommodate the more than 2500 people who attended. This was the first class with students who took all four years of their classes on the Rocklin campus. From prelude to postlude, the event was filled with excitement as we sent these young warriors forth to be “world changers” for our Lord! Pat Gelsinger delivered the Commencement address. Pat is Senior Vice President and co-General Manager of Intel Corporation’s Digital Enterprise Group (DEG). This group is Intel’s largest business Bryce Jessup, D.D., President group accounting for more than half of the corporation’s revenue. The encouraging part of graduation for me is the awareness that God has allowed us to pour our best into the lives of over 200 young men and women who, as Christ-centered servant leaders, will make a difference in ministry, education, business, politics, and in their families. Most of us are aware of some of the moral issues in public higher education. But the changes in DCP offer exciting ways to help our adult students complete their degree with greater flexibility and opportunities than ever before. These changes were made as a result of several studies, recommendations and reviews of other successful degree completion programs. With the information we acquired, we are excited about our ability to more effectively offer opportunities for adults to finish their degrees and respond to the current trends in higher education. What are these Changes? New Program Requirements: Majors have been reduced from as many Business Administration/Accounting from John Brown University. Sam as 61 units down to 48 for all majors. In response, we are launching a new program called PreMajor which allows students with as few as 30 transferable units to start in DCP. When the students have accumulated approximately 60 units between transferable units and PreMajor they may officially enter the Major classes in their program. Classes offered in PreMajor include general education and free electives and are offered in the same working adultfriendly compressed manner as Major courses. Rocklin Sharon Stenger has recently joined the team as the Academic Coordinator. Sharon has experience in Ministry, Counseling Psychology and past experience as a program director for Fresno Pacific University’s DCP program. Lisa Amrein joined the team as Enrollment Counselor in November and has a background of successful student recruitment and recently completed a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology. Educational Advisory Council A group of over 35 educators and administrators met in April to provide valuable input and direction to WJU’s Teacher Education Department. Superintendents and principals provide invaluable guidance to the program, which enjoys a positive relationship with local districts for student placement at the end of the program. State Assemblyman Ted Gaines, who represents the 4th District (and father of current WJU student Amy) addressed the group and opened a dialogue to how state issues are affecting education. BROADCASTER Spring 2008 On May 1, President Jessup accepted the Roy & Peggy Ruhkala Community Service Award for the University’s continued involvement in the Rocklin community. Since moving the William Jessup University to Rocklin in 2004, the University has been involved in many community events. The university has hosted events featuring Laura Bush, Placer County Transportation Forum, City of Rocklin Drug Awareness Series, Placer County Chaplaincy meetings and trainings and serves as a Placer County Elections Polling Place. Students also spend over 20,000 hours performing community service each year in churches, shelters, non-profit organizations, youth groups, university and church missions. The beautiful journey of church planting that has evolved over almost 20 years started because of that vision from Dr. Jessup. One year into our journey, my wife and I and a handful of believers prayed about a church in the Bay Area that would reach people of Indian background for Christ. Christ Church of India was born and by God’s grace we purchased a wonderful facility five years ago, with all the money raised from within the congregation. Were it not for the academic preparation, training and acceptance I received from SJCC, I could not have been in a position to be the founding pastor of this church. When my family arrived in the United States, we had only $60 and needed help badly. That is all we were allowed to bring from India as students. Praise God for SJCC where I was given a full scholarship to study. All the experience and further education I had in the U.S. I owe to this wonderful institution. Today Christ Church of India is able to support more than 50 missionaries in India, Guyana, and Kenya. We have built a number of churches, helped several orphanages, hospitals and clinics, and financed students to finish their medical training as doctors and nurses. Right here in the Bay Area, we help the homeless and those 16 “I remember preaching for Ranjan when he started the church. As I looked into the faces of the dozen or so who were gathered that day in Sunnyvale, I had no idea that God would use Ranjan and this small beginning to grow the largest East Indian Church in Silicon Valley. God has rewarded Ranjan’s commitment to Christ with abundant fruit for his labor.” – Bryce Jessup BROADCASTER Spring 2008 Gerald Martinez B.S., Pastoral Ministry, 1979 On January 15, 2007, the Martinez family of Albuquerque, NM was surprised to receive the news that Ty and the gang of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” would be transforming their insufficient, run-down duplex used as a refuge for the needy and homeless into a larger and more safe home for their family. When Gerald Martinez was offered a job at a local church in Albuquerque, he quickly moved his family of seven from Colorado to New Mexico. Before moving to New Mexico, Gerald spent much of his time making trips to help the troubled communities of Albuquerque. Instead of moving into a safe neighborhood for his wife Liesa and kids, Gerald moved his family into a run-down duplex that was just minutes away from the church. In a neighborhood of crime, drug deals, and prostitution, Gerald began transforming the church into a refuge for the needy. This refuge included a café, daycare facility, and working bathroom with showers so the homeless had a place to clean up. The community welcomed the Martinez family and was very grateful for all of their hard work. However, there were some that did not take a liking to Gerald and even attacked him with a glass bottle in front of his own house. Still, Gerald Liesa and Gerald managed to work together with the community and quickly transformed an area once called “the War Zone” into a new and better place now called “God’s Block.” As crime rates decreased and the community began getting media attention, Gerald purchased two other duplexes that would be used to create the “Mission Outpost,” a place where broken people could recover from their troubles. With an open door policy, many people were making use of the Outpost. The Martinez family was finally connecting with their neighbors, but they also began to lose their own family privacy. Soon enough, the family began to undergo financial difficulties as well, considering they do not charge rent. Although the family has made a great impact on the transformed community, they did not have enough space for themselves to live in. They didn’t have a working stove and used hot plates to do their cooking. With little privacy and on the verge of financial ruin, the Martinez family was in severe need of a new and safe home where they could continue their mission to save the town of Trumbull. Extreme Makeover provided them with a new private residence and expanded facility in which to carry out their ministry.
