From the Interim President
Dear Friends of Thornwell:
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the administration
and staff of this remarkable 136-year-old ministry of
the Presbyterian Church, I express our deep gratitude
for your faithful prayers and your generous support that
make this holy work possible. Thornwell, like other
non-profit organizations and most businesses, continued
to address the challenges of a recovering economy in our
2009 – 2010 fiscal year. At the same time, the Board kept
its eye on the future and made commitments to position
Thornwell for strength in years to come.
As the foundation of other commitments, the Board gave
priority to ensuring fiscal stability and responsibility in
Thornwell’s operations. We implemented a combination
of restraint of expenses, reduction in staff and
reassignment of responsibilities, and a broader, more
creative fund raising strategy. We also have initiated a
revision of our investment management policies. While
some of these actions have been difficult, they were
necessary to enable us to navigate through the current
unstable environment while positioning us to be strong
in the future.

Another priority for us is to maintain a high degree of
excellence in the programs and services we provide to
our children and families. Thornwell has distinguished
itself by the quality of our staff and the levels of training
and support we provide them. We believe it is important
to follow the best practices in residential care and family
services, to stay abreast of trends and developments
across the spectrum of ministry to children and
young people, and to be open to new directions and
opportunities in the future.
We continue to provide many opportunities for Christian
nurture and faith development. Our experience teaches
us that the care of the souls and spirits of children is as
important as any other dimension of our ministry. The
distinctively Christian character of our program is one
of the keys to the successful outcomes we achieve.
We also want our children to have the best possible
academic experience and to reach their intellectual
potential. To that end, we are committed to providing
each child with the individual tutoring, counseling,
and resources of technology that will ensure success in
school. Again, the achievements of the children validate
the effectiveness of our Learning Center program.
The Board has affirmed its commitment to the highest
level of stewardship of our facilities and property. In
the months ahead, a revised campus master plan and
land-use plan will be developed. Already we are seeking
mission-appropriate collaborations and partnerships
with sister institutions and with our community and
local agencies. Our Trustees believe there is potential
for strategic alliances that will strengthen Thornwell’s
ministry while improving the quality of life for the
community in which we are located.
Thornwell is blessed with a strong and dedicated Board
of Trustees, men and women who are leaders in their
churches as well as in their professional and civic
activities. They bring great resources of wisdom, business
and financial expertise, community relationships, and
passion for caring for the children whom God entrusts to
us. And we are anticipating with great joy and excitement
the arrival in June, 2011, of Thornwell’s 9th President,
the Reverend Elliot M. Smith and his wife Jill, who will
be coming to us from Austin, Texas.
Again, we thank you for your faithful partnership in
ministry. As always, we ask for your prayers and your
financial support as Thornwell seeks to fulfill its sacred
calling to let the children come, unhindered. Jesus said
that it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven
belongs.

Teaching-Family Program
“When I needed shelter,
you gave me a home...
Meet Jackson. In 2009-10, Jackson lived in Stewart
Cottage with Family Teachers Greg and Suzanne
Humphreys and Jim and Becky Brown. He came
to Thornwell in 2008 along with his two sisters.
His parents, overcome by personal and financial
issues, realized that they could not take care of their
children. They did a courageous thing. They asked for
help. Jackson’s parents brought him and his siblings
to Thornwell, and for nearly two years, they were
fortunate enough to live in a home where the love of
Christ abounds, where skilled caregivers know how
to deal with their hurts, and where a community of
people could put their arms around them and hold
them until it was time to let go.
Recently, Jackson went home to his family. He went
home to a father with a stable job and a renewed spirit.
He went home to a family who just needed a little help
for a while. And because Thornwell was there, they
could receive help without fear of losing their children
forever.
Your gifts to Thornwell gave Jackson much more than
shelter. Your gifts gave Jackson a home.
In 2009-10, eleven cottages on campus
were in operation, each cottage home to
6-8 children.
Of the 12 residents in Sara Jo Cottage, 8
were college students – the most students
in Thornwell’s Preparation for Independent
Living Program history to attend college at
the same time.

Academic Education Programs
In 2010, Thornwell students continued to perform
better as a group, on the SC Palmetto Assessment
of State Standards (PASS) than their peers in SC.
“When our future
looked uncertain, you
gave us hope...
Meet Kirsten, Stacy and Savannah. These
sisters have called Thornwell home for over
8 years. They live in Berkele Cottage with
Family Teachers, Adam and Leah Hucks,
and Mike and Bethany Collins. Thornwell
strives to keep brothers and sisters together
when at all possible. These three sisters have
been fortunate enough to live at Thornwell
together, and have even lived in the same
cottage with the same Family Teachers for
the last five years.

When they first came to Thornwell, the
hope you see in their eyes today wasn’t there.
Your gifts this year have given these young
ladies hope for a bright future by providing
them opportunities for a good education
and academic support; resources to explore
their talents and interests; and role models
to help inspire them to make the most of
every opportunity.
In 2010, your gifts gave these sisters hope
and the opportunity to live their dreams.

Thornwell students scored as follows:
English and Language Arts –
fourteen (50%) scored Exemplary,
twelve (43%) scored Met,
2 (7%) scored Not met;
Math –
ten (36%) scored Exemplary
fourteen (50%) scored Met
four (14%) scored Not met
At the end of the 2009-2010 school year,
all students were promoted to the next grade level.
All Thornwell seniors graduated with a diploma
in June of 2010.
Six students earned high school credits at the
Thornwell Learning Center over the summer to
help them stay on course for on-time graduation.
Two students were provided their education at the
Learning Center for part of the school year through
the Medical Homebound program.
Title I funding for the 2009-2010 school year was
$99,250.These funds were used to pay for tutors,
computers, software, and library books.
“When my spirit felt
broken you offered me
healing...
Imagine being eight years old and wanting
to end the pain so badly that running into
traffic on a busy road seems like the only
answer. That was Adam’s* story a little
more than a year ago.
“Adam was so troubled and disruptive in
school that the principal called me and said
she simply couldn’t keep him in class,” said
Learning Center Director, Norman Dover.
“That afternoon, we went to work gathering
the resources we’d need to try and help him
- Family Teachers, our Special Education
tutor, Susan Young, Adam’s school teacher
and other Thornwell staff worked together
on a plan.”
At the end of the planning session, it was
agreed that Adam’s Family Teachers would
shadow him at school to try and discover
what caused his outbursts. Susan Young
would work with Adam after school to help
him “catch-up” in reading and math, and
at home (Georgia-Beattie Cottage) Family
Teachers would work with him to help him
with self-control.
“One of the major problems was that Adam
hadn’t learned to read and he was frustrated.
Our Learning Center tutors helped him
learn to read and his Family Teachers
worked intensely with him, helping him
learn techniques to control his anger.
These days, Adam is in a much better place, physically, emotionally and academically. He is
now a good student and a much happier child.
He’s learned how to manage his frustrations,
but more importantly, he knows he is loved.
He knows he’s not alone.

Thornwell Agriculture Education Center
(TAEC)
Thornwell Agriculture Education Center promotes
agriculture education in our local community. It is
home to 28 goats, three sheep, five steers, two heifers,
three horses, two ponies, one miniature horse, a
donkey, two llamas, about 25 laying hens, four rabbits,
and one potbelly pig. These animals are used to teach
young people about agriculture, where their food
comes from, and how to take care of animals.
Educational Uses
Laurens County Districts 55 and 56 have been
using the farm as a teaching facility for several
years. In the last three years more than 150
high school students have attended classes
taught in:


Equine Science

Introduction to Vet Science
• Piedmont Technical College Vet Tech
Program uses animals at the farm for lab
activities and works with high school students
to learn Vet skills.

• Baby Animal Day has been held at
Thornwell for seven years. Through that time
nearly 10,000 kindergartners have attended
to learn about animals and where their food
comes from.
• Several Church groups have toured and
enjoyed the farm during their time at
Thornwell for summer programs.
Thornwell 4-H Program
Thornwell 4-H meets once a month to
help teach local children about animals
and environmental issues. The program has
45 members ranging in ages from 5 to 19
years old. Twenty-eight of these members
are present or former Thornwell residents.
Thornwell 4-H members have participated in
the following activities
 Swine Project - Participants rear a pig
from December to March. At the end of the
project participants show their pig; then, the
pig is processed. Seven of the 15 members
rearing/showing pigs were Thornwell
residents.
 Pullet Project - Members rear and show
laying hens. These hens supply eggs to some
Thornwell cottages and are sold to help pay
program expenses.
 South Carolina Wether Goat ProjectThree of the eleven members rearing and
showing goats are Thornwell residents.
Through this project participants learn how to
show and care for goats. Each 4-H member
is assigned a day to care for all the goats. All
participants must halter, break and groom
their own goat for show.
Faith Development and Christian Nurture
“When I needed love, you gave
me a Christian community...
Thanks to our generous sponsors, our Thornwell
children had the opportunity to attend several camps,
conferences and retreats in the summer of 2010. Among
these were Trinity Presbytery Middle School and High
School Retreats; Montreat Collegiate Conference;
Montreat Senior High Youth Conference; Montreat
Middle School Conference at Presbyterian College;
Camp Fellowship, Camp Buc, Bethany Summer Youth
Camp; and the CROSS Mission trip to Charlotte, NC.
During the summer, the younger children enjoyed
attending Vacation Bible School hosted by First
Presbyterian Church, Hartsville, SC, held on our
campus. Art activities and puppetry classes were offered
to the elementary children in the fall and winter.
Our church youth group met regularly during the school
year. Eight Presbyterian College students were youth
leaders in the program. We are very thankful for their
participation. Highlights of the year were: A Progressive
Dinner, a pool party with Lake Murray PC, exchange
with First Presbyterian Church, Clinton, SC, and PC
Youth Day.
at the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, and stocking shelves
at the Cluster Food Bank. They also enjoyed making
ornaments, cards, and cookies to take to the residents
when they went caroling at the Laurens County
Memorial Home for the Aged.
In December 2011, the children and youth of Thornwell
participated in a cottage Advent activities individualized
for each age group. A special memory was the children’s
reenactment of Las Posadas where they paraded around
campus looking for shelter for Mary and Joseph. The
event ended with a Mexican Christmas party. The
children really enjoyed that activity!
Being an active member of a joyful, Christian community
helps Thornwell’s children feel connected with each
other and with God.

A Confirmation Class was held in the spring of 2010.
Ten youth participated and four joined the church.
Devotions were held regularly in the cottages. In the fall
of 2010, we implemented the E-100 Challenge encouraging
each cottage to read 100 stories from the Old and New
Testament. “Conversations,” an opportunity for middle
and high youth to ask faith questions of different adults,
was offered monthly.
Teaching the importance of philanthropy to our
children and youth is a very important part of our Faith
Development Program at Thornwell. Thanks to the
Farrell Fund for Philanthropy, our youth researched
and awarded grants to several non-profit organizations.
Between January and June, they raised over $6,000 for
the LaHatte School in Haiti by giving up their weekend
packages, hosting a bake sale, awarding a Farrell Fund
gift, and soliciting other donations.
Other service projects the youth participated in were
packaging shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse; collecting
canned goods during the Souper Bowl of Caring;
packing and delivering Thanksgiving food boxes to a
low income neighborhood in Laurens County; serving

During the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2009,
and ending September 30, 2010, Thornwell continued
to be blessed by the faithfulness and generosity of
those who make this ministry possible. We had 4,563
donors who made a total of 9,107 gifts amounting to
$2,647,000 in unrestricted revenue. We also received
$573,000 in temporarily or permanently restricted
revenue for capital projects or endowment.

achieve long-term stability and strength for the
financial foundation of Thornwell’s ministry.
As we move forward with our renewed commitment
to loving and caring for the children, nurturing
them in faith and supporting them academically,
your partnership will be needed more than ever to
ensure that those who need this ministry will find
a place here. Thank you for your prayers, for your
gifts, and for your concern for God’s little ones.
The 2009-2010 revenues were down from just over $4
million in the previous year, primarily in the category
of unrestricted bequests and estate gifts. Support from
individuals, churches, church groups, foundations, and
trust funds were consistent with the prior 12-month
totals. The net result was that Thornwell had to absorb
a $2.89 million loss by expending unrestricted reserve
funds.
The 2009 – 2010 year was a period of significant
changes for Thornwell. The challenges being faced
were compounded by the uncertainty of the economic
environment. By addressing these challenges

In July, 2010, the Board mandated that Thornwell
no longer could rely on limited reserve funds to
support current operations. Trustees and staff began
immediately to cut expenditures through elimination
of staff positions and reductions in staff benefits,
consolidation of two cottage families, and other
budget adjustments designed to limit overhead. We
initiated revision of the investment management
policy. And we acted to require that unless otherwise
designated, all bequests and estate gifts will flow
to the investment pool. Any withdrawals from the
unrestricted investment funds will require action by
the Board of Trustees. Permanent or donor-designated
funds are protected in perpetuity.
