2016 Newsletter The Poshard Foundation For Abused Children www.poshardfoundation.org $100,000 in Counseling Grants Awarded! Due to the state budget impasse in Illinois, which has led to a decrease in funding for many social service agencies, the Poshard Foundation distributed $100,000 to provide direct counseling to abused, abandoned, and neglected children in Southern Illinois. The checks were presented on December 2, 2015. The Foundation believes that no child should be deprived of critical counseling due to issues in Springfield. 12 agencies receiving counseling grants Photo Credit: John Homan/Logan Media Services The 12 agencies awarded grants are The Amy Center, Mt. Vernon, The Women’s Center, Inc., Carbondale; Williamson County Child Advocacy Center, Herrin. On Friday, April 1st, 2016, the Poshard Foundation partnered with Prevent Child Abuse Illinois and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, along with other community organizations, to kick off state and national Child Abuse Prevention Month. Tyler R. Edmonds, Union County State’s Attorney, spoke about the need for the public to not just view child abuse as a law enforcement or DCFS issue but to recognize it as a community issue that needs to be addressed. “We can’t stop child abuse if we pretend it doesn’t exist. There are so many signs of child abuse. When reviewing cases, it commonly seems that someone should have seen it sooner. We need to know the signs of abuse. We need to recognize it and report it,” Edmonds said. Other speakers included Lori Gray, Southern Region Administrator, DCFS, who stated, “DCFS can’t help children and families we don’t know about. We need the public’s help to be our eyes and ears.” Special Agent Alicia Barr, Illinois State Police, addressed the issue of child deaths caused as a result of co-sleeping with an adult. Anyone who suspects the abuse of a child should call 1-800-25-ABUSE.
