CSI Baseball looks to challenge for Region 18
title with strong returning pitching core
The Region 18 Championship comes down to pitching depth year after year. This season, the Golden Eagles
have positioned themselves to compete for a Scenic West Athletic Conference championship.
CSI boasts seven returning pitchers and a sophomore transfer pitcher to anchor the 2011 Golden Eagle squad.
First-team all region selection Mike Renner leads the way. Renner won seven games as a freshman and ranked
fourth in the league in earned run average (2.09). Teammate Tyler Duffin won Region 18 Reliever of the Year
honors last season. He ranked first in the league with a 1.06 in earned run average. CSI also returns Travis
Huber, who posted five saves and a 2.27 ERA to rank fifth in Region 18. Add to that the returning experience of
Region 18 honorable mention selection Tyler Vavra (2.83 ERA) and Chris Kerns (4.29 ERA). Trey Mohammed
that pitched for the Golden Eagles in 2009 and redshirted last season after suffering a broken elbow will return
on the mound this season along with sophomore transfer Brandon Petite who hails from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Petite pitched for Texas Tech last season.
“Obviously I’m excited with our pitching depth and consider that a strength,” said CSI head coach Boomer
Walker. “I’m not sure we have a true No. 1 starter but we have a strong core and competitive kids.”
Those eight will join three freshmen pitchers to complete the staff. Cody White from Lacey, Washington and
Edgard Burgos of Chehalis, Wash. are both righthanders, while Paul Schaak of Winkler, Manitoba give CSI a
left-handed option.
Returning starter Parker Morin will see a majority of the time at the catcher position. Morin was a Region 18
honorable mention award winner that started 37 games for the Golden Eagles. Joining him behind the plate will
be freshman Luke Miller (West Jordan, Utah). CSI began the year with four catchers but freshman Devon Austin
of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho was killed in a car accident in the fall and freshman Sam Huebner of Rhinelander, Wis.
will redshirt.
4
2011 Outlook
In the infield, the Golden Eagles will look to returning starters Ryan Cooperstone at shortstop and national
Golden Glove winner Blake Lively at third base for experience. Cooperstone hit .273 and Lively hit .278 for
CSI. Other infielders include returning sophomore Vincent Giron of Salt Lake City and incoming freshmen
Kendal Maier of Missoula, Mont., Andrew Freter of Meridian, Idaho, Chase Harris of Meridian, Idaho, Christian
Snuffer of Sandy, Utah and Ben Douglas of Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan.
The only outfielder with experience is JC Paquin. The
6-2 sophomore played a majority of his time at the designated hitter position as a freshman, hitting .226 in 53
games. Newcomers include Andre Ashton of West Jordan, Utah, Parker Webster of Sandy, Utah, Ben Douglas
of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and Tyler McCarty of
Chehalis, Wash.
“I feel like we have more of a core group that is willing to sacrifice to win this year,” Walker said. “I think
our hitting throughout lineup will be strong. We will be
able to put nine guys all the way through that can swing
it.”
The Golden Eagles start the season on the road in
Phoenix, Ariz. before coming home for a weekend series
with non-conference foe Prairie Baseball Academy.
On March 4, CSI opens the
Scenic West Athletic Conference season in Price, Utah
against College of Eastern
Utah. While it’s tough to
know this early who the team
to beat will be, Walker said
he expects Western Nevada,
Southern Nevada and Salt
Lake will continue to be good.
College of Eastern Utah is
much improved and he expects Colorado Northwestern
to be similar to last year.
“I think overall the league is
down a little bit just because
we lost the best player in the
country,” Walker said referring to first-round draft pick
Bryce Harper who led the
College of Southern Nevada to a third-place finish at the JUCO World Series.
The winner of the SWAC regular season will host the Region 18 Tournament May 11-14th. The Region 18
champion will need to win a district playoff May 19-21 to advance to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. May 28-June 4.

Boomer Walker
Head Coach
7th Season
It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s
cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years
Boomer took over as head coach in 2004. In those six years, Boomer has
amassed a 211 wins and just 139 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden Eagles
battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of
play. In 2009, The Golden Eagles played in the Region 18 Championship and
advanced to the district playoff.
Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip
Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the
program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’
national championship in 1984.
Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state
championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when
he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing
at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching
experience.
In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is
the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor.
Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting.
“I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this
program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.”
When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife
Maria have two boys - Tai Ripken and Treyson.

Kris Welker
Assistant Coach
2nd Season
Kris Welker begins second season as an assistant baseball coach with
the Golden Eagles.
“Kris understands what it means to be a Golden Eagle and brings
enthusiasm, energy and knowledge of what it takes to win in the Scenic
West Athletic Conference,” said CSI head coach Boomer Walker.
Welker played at CSI from 2001 to 2003, earning first team all-region
honors in 2003 as a catcher. From CSI, Welker transferred to the
University of Iowa where he was named third team all Big Ten and
University of Iowa MVP in 2005. The same year, he was drafted by the
Chicago White Sox in the 41st round, earning Bristol White Sox MVP
honors.
He played two years in the White Sox organization before becoming the first base coach for the Clinton
Lumber Kings (Texas Rangers organization) in 2007.
Since 2007, Welker has been a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Iowa.
He and his wife Jennifer are enjoying a new addition to the family - Kaden Wade.
“ Kris brings energy and enthusiam to our program. He works extremely hard and the players
respond well to him. He has turned our pitching into our strength.” - Boomer Walker
7
Skip Walker
Assistant Coach
38th Season
Golden Eagle baseball fans know him as Skip. People who spend
a lot of time around him are familiar with the phrases “jeezo-peezo,”
“mentality,” and a few others too colorful to print here. His players, both
former and current, can recite the five P’s - “proper planning prevents
poor procedure.” But it’s the rich history Jim Walker has brought to the
CSI program that defines who he is.
Skip Walker is a legend at CSI. Not only was Walker inducted into the
CSI Athletic Hall of Fame 2003, but Frontier Field was officially named
the James F. “Skip” Walker baseball field the same year.
In his 31 years as a head coach at CSI, Walker planted the trees, built
the clubhouse and played a major role in creating one of the top five JUCO fields in the country. Along the way,
he has cultivated baseball players, winning 12 region titles, competing in eight JUCO World Series and winning
a national championship in 1984, taking third in 1988, fourth in 1986 and fifth in 1975.
Retiring from head coaching duties in 2004, Skip continues to be a part of CSI baseball as an assistant.
Walker is married to his wife Julene. They have a daughter Carly and a son, Boomer, who is the Golden
Eagles head coach.
“I’m the luckiest guy in the country. I have an
offensive assistant that has won more than 1100
games in his career. I’m in a great, great situation.
He can now use his knowledge to help the players
without worrying about all the other stuff.” Boomer Walker on having his dad and former head
coach Skip Walker as an assistant.

Gene Ritchie
Volunteer Assistant Coach
“Our program couldn’t survive without Geno. He is the first
one at the field each day and the last one to leave. He is the
hardest working retired person in the country.”

President Jerry Beck
Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 1975 and
became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include
Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing
Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice
President/Chief Academic Officer.
Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical
Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult
Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at
Harvard University Institute for Educational Management.
In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin
Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development
Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local
organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization,
Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center.
He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils.
Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three
grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his
family and co-workers.
Athletic Director Joel Bate
Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate took over Golden Eagle
Athletic Director responsibilities in January 2007.
Bate, who had been teaching in the English Department since he arrived on
the CSI campus in 1993, gave up teaching in the classroom to work with studentathletes and coaches on a daily basis.
Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Lady Golden Eagles
to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78
record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic AllAmericans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica
Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned
Region 18 Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School
in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition
to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he
compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes.
Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the
University of Idaho in 1986.
Bate and his wife Donna and three children live in Twin Falls.
