GWRRA Region H – Chapter M Page | 1 Greetings Chapter M, Happy New Year! 2016 is starting off with a bang with the Polar Bear Ride to Henryetta. Come on guys let’s be honest…how may are really going to ride their bikes…LOL. My corider has already put the stop on me riding. Chapter M is going to be heading to the district ride in Henryetta with at least 14 members. It would be even better if more chapter members could come on out and join the festivities. I realize that it’s only January but I am so ready to ride. Poor Oklahoma though. We’re the only state that can have tornado warnings, winter storm advisories and flash flood warnings all in the same 24 hour period. Maybe we will have a mild spring with lots of good riding weather. 2016 may be starting with a bang but I gotta say that Chapter M ended 2015 with a bang. It seemed to me that from October to December was a blur. It went so fast and it was loaded with so many fun events. December started with the toy run we attend in honor of Sonny Foster. This activity provides toys to area boys and girls in the Cherokee county area. It is sponsored in part by Cherokee Cruisers, a vintage car club in which our girl Edna is a member. A little over a week after the toy run in Tahlequah it was chapter gathering time. This gathering was a lesson in resourcefulness. Due to over booking we were required to seek accommodations elsewhere. It just so happen that Pizza Hut located on Shawnee Street in Muskogee welcomed us with open arms. We had a great meeting. We ate pizza and celebrated Judy’s birthday. We would have liked to have celebrated Pam’s also but she was a little under the weather that day. For the next six or so months if everything continues to go well at Pizza Hut that is where we will be holding our monthly gatherings. The last bit of fun we had in December was the annual Christmas Party. We all gathered at Paul’s Diner for a meal and a rousing game of Dirty Santa. Edna was the first one to start the swiping of Christmas gifts. The game got really fun when Lanny got the dancing Christmas tree. Never in my days would I have thought that Bill would swipe it from Lanny and then Frank would swipe it from Bill. That little stuffed, lighted up, dancing Christmas tree made the rounds. We all had so much fun. If you weren’t able to make it this year remember there is always next year so leave some wiggle room in your plans to attend a very fun event. With the weather being so unpredictable right now we will probably be scheduling a few impromptu rides if warm weather peeks its head out. We will also be trying to do some training. I will send out notices and be calling to let you know what is going on. Once again Happy New Year, stay safe and warm and I hope to see you real soon. Chapter M is rapidly moving to 2016 and that means that we need to consider what courses and steps that we need to take to continue to lead the way in our Levels Program. As was explained in our December Chapter Gathering, there is absolutely no charge for levels participation as Oklahoma District pays for our Level I applications and the Chapter pays for everything else through Level IV. Level I is “Safety by Commitment” and requires absolutely nothing of you other than for you to have a desire to ride safely. We have a few new Chapter members that need to get with me to complete their paperwork for Level I and we’ll get you enrolled. It is truly that simple. If you would like to complete the form and bring it to me, the form is available here: http://gwrra.org/regional/ridered/officerpage.html#a5. Simply download the N.7 form, fill it out and bring it to me and I’ll take care of the rest. Level II is “Safety by Education” and requires you to invest a little time toward your safety. At this level, you must have completed a Rider Education course within the last 3 years. There are plenty of courses available either through GWRRA (Advanced Rider Course (ARC) for two-wheelers, Trike Rider Course (TRC) for three wheelers, etc). Each of these courses typically cost $35 and the Trike Rider Course will be available at the Region H Rally coming up in March. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers motorcycle training courses where you can ride your motorcycle in a one-day course. Brown’s Driving School offers these courses in Tulsa for $135 and equivalent courses can be found in Arkansas for $100. I’ll keep looking for GWRRA sponsored ARC at the lower rate, but currently, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol offers a course that is absolutely free and will suffice for a training course for Level II. While the 2016 course schedule is not yet online, it can be found here http://www.ohpsaferiders.com/. Once you have taken an approved motorcycle safety course, you will need to have 5,000 Safe Miles (miles ridden without an accident since joining GWRRA). For our Co-Riders, we will be presenting a Co-Riders’ Seminar in January or February (dates to be determined). Once you have completed that course (which is absolutely free) and have 5,000 miles, you will be eligible to move to Level II in the Levels Program. Level III or “Safety by Preparedness” requires a member to be current in the Level II program by having a current Motorcycle Safety Course, a current first aid or CPR course (GWRRA has instructors who provide the Medic First Aid course (MFA) which teaches both at the same training session and is good for 2 years), carry a first aid kit on your motorcycle, and have a completed Motorist Awareness seminar. Chapter M will be hosting a Motorist Awareness seminar in January or February with dates yet to be determined. Level IV or “Safety by Enhanced Commitment and Preparedness” is the level that we should all strive to reach and maintain. In order to meet this level, you must be current in Level III for a minimum of one year and have 25,000 safe miles. You must be current in both first aid and CPR qualifications (remember the MFA meets both requirements). In addition, you must make a commitment to wear ALL of your motorcycle safety gear when you ride. This includes over-the-ankle boots, long pants, long sleeves, fullfingered gloves, eye protection and a helmet. Level IV designates you as a “Master” rider, dedicated to safety of yourself and others. At each GWRRA rally at the District level and above, there is a free breakfast or luncheon for current Level IV riders and coriders to recognize their dedication to safety. Chapter M presently has 22 members enrolled in the Levels Program with 9 Level IV members and two of those members being at that level for more than 5 years and designated as Senior Masters. January 2016 OK Chapter M Page | 4 I look forward to serving the Chapter as the Chapter Educator. As the Motorcycle Safety Foundation states, “The more you know, the better it gets.” I want to wish everyone a safe and prosperous New Year. Happiness isn’t around the corner, happiness IS the corner. Bill Rhoades Rider Education Coordinator ----------------------------------------------------------------- January 2016 OK Chapter M Page | 5 Motorcycle Accident Statistics Motorcycle statistics suggest quite a bit about the dangers associated with riding. Many of these statics lead to the idea that the practice of riding a motorcycle is one of great danger, and while this may be true, statistics also reveal much more. Dr. Ed Mason Several reports claim that, on average, between two and three thousand motorcyclists die each year in the United States. Motorcycle fatalities have been on the rise ever since the late 1990s, reaching a record high of 12 percent—a total of 5,037 motorcycle fatalities—of all vehicle crash-deaths in 2007 in the United States. These statistics suggest what many believe to be true: Motorcycles are dangerous, which may be true, but the general public should also know they are dangerous because of their very nature—existing in the open, without protective barriers between the rider and outside elements on the road—not because of the way motorcyclists are trained to operate. In fact, during research conducted by the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) during 2003, it was found that in all motorcycle accidents occurring between motorcyclists and cars, the motorcyclist was either not at fault or less at fault than the other driver 80 percent of the time. This statistic should clear up the misconception that all motorcyclists operate on the edge, seeking danger. The very opposite is true; most motorcyclists take advantage of defensive driving courses and other educational classes related to riding. A frightening statistic from a 2000 study reveals how often car drivers are at fault in fatal motorcycle crashes. The study reports that in 2000 there were over 1,280 two-vehicle fatal crashes between motorcycles and other vehicles. Of these fatal collisions, the other vehicle was turning left while the motorcyclist was traveling straight in their lane or lawfully passing another vehicle 35 percent of the time. This is only one scenario demonstrating driver negligence killing a motorcyclist. Wearing a properly fitted helmet can help reduce the risks associated with riding, but will not offer the safety airbags would—motorcycles are, and always will be, more dangerous than cars. The NHTSA found that, based on a 2006 study, motorcyclists are eight times more likely to be injured in an accident than singlevehicle travelers. While there may be no one method to buck that trend overall, every rider should realize the dangers of motorcycling every time they hit the road—this revelation, on its own, can help. Since that time, more than 3,400 Medals of Honor have been awarded, with more than 2/3 of actions occurring prior to 1919 when the standards for award were significantly changed. Prior to that time, individuals could actually submit themselves (without witnesses) for the Medal of Honor. Within the state of Oklahoma, we have 23 recipients of this prestigious award, one of which the whereabouts has been lost to history. GWRRA Chapter M’s Ride for Honor is designed to pay homage to our heroes of this great nation, learn about their sacrifices, and have a great time riding. This is a photo tour. All participants will receive a list of Oklahoma’s Medal of Honor recipients, where they are interred, and a copy of each citation explaining their actions to receive the award. Cost: $15.00 per participant Ride Timeline: Participants will have from March 14, 2015 to February 28, 2016 to complete the Ride for Honor. All pictures (digital format) will be sent to [email protected] on or before March 1, 2016. Scoring: Awards: 1 Point for picture of participant(s) on motorcycle at the front gate of each cemetery. 2 Points for picture of participant(s) next to headstone as proof they honored this hero with a personal visit. (1) Ride for Honor commemorative 3-D pin (Awarded at the time of registration.) (2) First Place award - $100 gas card (Awarded at Chapter M’s March 2016 Anniversary.) (3) Second Place Award – 2 paid registrations to 2016 Oklahoma District Convention (Awarded at Chapter M’s March 2016 Anniversary.) (Pin shown actual size) All ties for highest scores will be placed in a drum and drawn at the Chapter’s anniversary gathering in March 2016 (date to be confirmed). ……………………………………………………………………………………………………… (Detach and mail to address shown below) _________ _______________________________ Rider Name ______ ____________________________________ Co-Rider Name __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Address City, State Zip Code __________________ Telephone Number Entry Fee(s): __________________________________ Email ___________ X $15.00 = $_________ Number January 2016 OK Chapter M Mail registration form and entry fee(s) to: Chapter Director, GWRRA OK-M 33322 State Hwy. 51 East Wagoner, OK 74467 P a g e | 11 2016 DISTRICT / REGION / GWRRA EVENTS February 27 (Sat) Chapter X Anniversary 11am – 2pm 7 South Little, Cushing Youth Center, Cushing OK. A copy of the Officer’s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: www.gwrra.org/oconnect/officerhandbook.html Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters. . From the Beginning In the past, By the Book articles have tended to be a bit random. The Officer Handbook, while not intended to be all inclusive, provides the roadmap our Association should follow. The Officer Certification Program (OCP) expands on the Officer Handbook and provides additional direction and interpretations. The contents of the Officer Handbook and OCP are not secret or intended to just be known by officers. Instead all members can benefit from knowing what they contain. This being a new year, I thought it prudent to begin at the beginning in reviewing the Officer Handbook and will include added input from the OCP. Every organization needs to have a mission and vision statement. These are the foundation for everything the organization hopes to accomplish. A mission statement defines the fundamental purpose of an organization and succinctly describes why it exists. The vision statement outlines what the organization wants to be. It is a long-term view concentrating on the future and should be a source of inspiration. GWRRA's mission statement is as follows: Established in 1977, the Gold Wing Road Riders Association provides an atmosphere for fun, safety, and knowledge to Gold Wing & Valkyrie motorcycle owners. The mission statement stands on its own without additional discussion. It completely describes our fundamental purpose for existance – fun, safety and knowledge. The vision statement is a bit more lengthy as it describes how we are going to accomplish the mission. GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Association) is a leader of associational organizations, respected by its Members as well as its competitors and the communities it operates within. GWRRA strives to offer the highest quality service to its Members. GWRRA is a family-oriented, non-religious, non-political association comprised of owners of Honda Gold Wing and Valkyrie Motorcycles as well as non-Gold Wing owners, our Associate Members. GWRRA provides a culture which fosters Members with shared values, team concepts and camaraderie. This culture also provides its Members with opportunities for personal development and achievement. GWRRA’s divisions (programs) work harmoniously as a team to increase the membership base by creating an atmosphere that provides fun, promotes safety, heightens knowledge, and by offering a full range of desirable services and benefits for its Members Next month we will begin discussion of how we accomplish each of the vision statement elements as we continue our journey thru the Officer Handbook.
