Alcoholism
• Alcoholism is a chronic and often progressive disease
that includes problems controlling your drinking, being
preoccupied with alcohol, continuing to use alcohol even
when it causes problems, having to drink more to get the
same effect (physical dependence), or having withdrawal
symptoms when you rapidly decrease or stop drinking.

Alcoholism cont.
“It’s not the number of drinks that defines an alcoholic, it’s
what happens to you when you’re drinking.”
-Sarah Benton, M.S., L.M.H.C., L.P.C., Alcoholic.

Alcoholism in
Dentistry/Professionals
• ~10%-15% of dentists will have a drug and/or alcohol
problem at some time in their lives (ADA)
– Risk in professionals unproven to be more or less than general
population
• ~1 in 15 healthcare professionals will suffer from an
addiction (British Medical Association)
