LADIES DINNER INVITE
“Your attitude is like a box of crayons that color
your world. Constantly color your picture gray, and
your picture will always be bleak. Try adding some
bright colors to the picture by including humor,
and your picture begins to lighten up.”
~Allen Klein~
My Friends,
BETTER TOGETHER
Many of you are home from summer traveling, ready to enjoy cooler weather and see your
friends. We will have many opportunities for you from now until the end of the year to help fill
your time. Please be sure and look at your newsletter calendar to see all the events scheduled,
and join us for fun and companionship. The reason we stay busy during this time of year is
because the holidays seem to be the hardest. Get involved now so you can get the most out of
this time together.

We will be bringing our food items this month for the “Feed Seniors Now” program, which is a
part of the Meals on Wheels program that feeds seniors on weekends. We have been involved
with this program for several years now and have been a very large contributor through our

CALENDAR OF EVENTS
We have been working on gathering recipes for our cookbook, “My Husband’s Favorite Recipe”
for many months now, and we are still short on recipes. We need recipes other than desserts!
You can tell what our husbands loved!! For those of you that are new, we ask you to bring a few
recipes that your husband loved, along with a short memory and a picture of the two of you.
These will be returned to you. They can be delivered to Lake Ridge Chapel or turned in at the
dinner. If you have questions, you can call Sandy or Norma; their numbers are listed on the
bulletin in the newsletter.
I want you to know that you are all in my prayers daily. I love you and my life is blessed having
you in it.

Also, we have changed our “Hand & Foot” day to “Game Day.” Many did not know how to play
Hand & Foot so we have changed that day to a day where we have different games to play. We
would love for you to be involved.

Another type of bunion is called a Tailor’s bunion, also
known as a bunionette. A Tailor’s bunion is located on the
outside of the foot, where the base of the little toe joins the
foot. It presents itself as a small bump, but gradually
enlarges, with all the accompanying painful and annoying
symptoms.
What it means to you:
If you’ve noticed the telltale signs of a bunion, there are
several important things to remember. The first is that the
sooner you receive treatment, the better your chances are
for relief of this condition. The second is that bunions won’t
go away on their own. Untreated, they'll just become worse;
ultimately, they'll be more painful and even harder to get
rid of. Third, although it is true that you won’t die from a
bunion, that doesn’t mean it isn’t an extremely painful
condition. In fact, the pain can be crippling if it’s left
unattended. Don’t tell yourself (or let anyone else tell you)
that bunions are a condition of aging, a fact of life or a part
of your family tree that you can’t escape. They’re none of
those things. What they are is this: a condition that, while
devastatingly painful, can be treated – and eliminated –
often without surgical intervention. And the earlier
treatment begins, the better the chances are for a full
recovery with minimal or no invasion.

What to look for:
The most common type of bunion begins as reddened skin
over the joint of the great toe, or big toe. It may be followed
by pain throughout the small joints of the foot, but
particularly in the joint where the big toe joins the foot.
(This area is known as the metatarsophalangeal joint, or
MTP joint). This pain may accelerate to the point where
wearing shoes causes pain and movement of the toe is
difficult. Either before or after this occurs, a firm bump will
develop on the inside of the foot, near the base of the big
toe. This bump will grow in size, often to the point where it
is unsightly and embarrassing. Wearing shoes becomes
increasingly painful. Ultimately, the big toe will turn inward
toward the other toes. Corns may develop on the smaller
toes as a result of the abnormal position of the foot. If left
untreated, the bunion may become so painful that the
patient begins walking differently to relieve pressure to that
part of the foot. As the problem progresses, pain may
become so severe that walking at all becomes intolerable.
Other notes:
Bunions often are dismissed as simply an unfortunate fact
of heredity (“Oh, my mother had bunions, so I guess I’ll have
to put up with them, too”). In fact, although factors which
predispose an individual to bunions may be hereditary, the
problem is an acquired one – meaning that the patient has
the ability to cut his or her risk factors.

Linda Wyatt
Frank and I met in 1978 at the
hospital where we both worked. I was
a nurse and he was a security guard.
Over the next two years we became
work friends. Our friendship
blossomed into a mutual respect and
we eventually realized we wanted to
spend the rest of our lives together.
We had both been in marriages that
failed, and we were both cautious
about marrying again. It took a year
of many long talks before we felt that
we could make a marriage work. Our four children had to be convinced that we
could form a blended family.
We were married by the Justice of the Peace at the courthouse. We had a
relationship based on trust and love. Our blended family grew as our children
married and had children of their own. We have nine grandchildren and nine
great‐grandchildren.
Frank spent 25 years in the Air Force. He worked for Civil Service at Reese AFB
until it closed and in the RV business until he retired due to health issues in
2007. His health continued to decline and he died on April 20, 2009.

It was difficult to realize I had to face the rest of my life alone. When I was
offered the opportunity to join the Lake Ridge Ladies, I knew that it would be
a wonderful experience. Since I joined, I have enjoyed the support of other
women who walk the path of widowhood.

My Husband’s Favorite Recipes
We have collected 227 recipes from 48 ladies. We do not have enough recipes for our cookbook. We will
be extending our time to gather more. We need more recipes in categories other than desserts. If you do
not want to submit a picture or a memory and only a recipe that will be fine, we would just like
participation. We have over 500 Lake Ridge Ladies, and we should be able to produce a great cookbook!
Contact Sandy Wall at 317-1996.
Movie Day
Sign up for Movie Day at the dinner! We will be going to the movies on a Tuesday once a month and you
will be notified by email (preferably) or a phone call as to the date, time and movie. Many go to eat
afterwards, and we have a great time!
Prayer Chain
If you have any prayer requests, we would like to pray for you. Contact Shirley Parker at 319-1126.
Food Train
Our Food Train is a service that we provide to any of our Lake Ridge Ladies who are in need of a meal and
of seeing a friendly face in a time of need. We would like to help if you are sick or recovering. We have a
list of our Ladies who have volunteered to help you in your time of need. We will bring you dinner with a
portion that you will be able to have for lunch the next day and then someone else will bring you dinner
again. If you would like to be on our Food Train as a server or if you need us to help you, please let us
know by calling Diane White at 241-0742.
Dutch Dinner
Dutch Dinner is another opportunity to share a meal together in the middle of the month and meet new
friends. We meet at a different restaurant every month. The date, time and location can be found on the
monthly calendar. There are many of our Ladies who work or have other obligations during the day and
cannot participate in our game days or outings. This dinner was planned for you!
Game Day
Join us for games on the 2nd Monday every month from 1-3pm. We will be playing Hand & Foot, Yahtzee,
Dominoes, Mexican Train, Chicken Foot and Skip Bo. This is a great way to get involved with the Lake
Ridge Ladies and make friends.
Bunco
Bunco is a dice game that is easy to play and very easy to learn! Bunco is usually played with a small
money pot, but we bring a white elephant or re-gift for our prizes. We bring our gift in a pretty little gift
bag. The prizes are always fun to win and even more fun to bring! We meet on the second Thursday of
each month at Lake Ridge Chapel & Memorial Designers.
