Did You Know?
I have been practicing in East Orange for 31 years, 13 years in the Essex Valley Medical
Arts building and now for just over 5 years in our current suite on the 3rd floor. The practice
has grown thanks to our loyal patients and dedicated staff. I am glad to have had the help of
longtime assistants Ilda (18 years) and Shamane (10 years). Dr. Sam is helping us move
into advanced foot and ankle care, and he has been with me over 2 years. My old partner
Dr. Tanenbaum continues to do well and has been enjoying retirement in Fort Myers, Florida
for 15 years.
We have started a survey program on our website so that we can serve you better. My front
desk staff can give you the information to go online and offer your suggestions, comments,
or complaints (I hope there are not too many of these though). This is designed to meet our
patient’s needs as we try to continue to offer exceptional customer service.
I would not be the doctor I am today without the help and support of my beautiful and
talented wife Louise. My daughter Melissa is now a doctor of physical therapy in Ocean
Grove. Michael is a mechanic working for now at STS automotive in East Hanover. Brian is
finishing his externship for the Starr Academy Culinary Program and will be a chef when he
graduates in November. Brandon is starting his 2nd year at the University of Miami in a
program to be a Medical Researcher in Immunology or Genetics.
Louise’s sons Jeff and Brian now have given us 3 beautiful grandchildren, Clara, Connor,
and Liam.
We are truly blessed and thankful. I wish you all well and look forward to continue to help
you and your family to walk in comfort.

Keep on Your Toes by Treating Your Bunions
What do Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey and
Gwenneth Paltrow have in common? They all
suffer from bunions.
Rich Karlis, who retired in
1990, was the last full-time
barefoot placekicker in the
NFL. While playing for
the Denver Broncos, he set
a then-Super Bowl record
of a 47-yard field goal in
1987’s Super Bowl XXI,
although the New York
Giants went on to win the
game.
A bunion is a bony growth that forms on the joint at
the base of your big toe. It occurs when the big
toe pushes against the next toe, which then
pushes and crowds the others. Bunions grow as
this misalignment continues over time. Sometimes
a callus will form on the bunion as well.
Bunion Symptoms and Causes
Think you have a bunion? Check for one or more of these signs:
•
•
•
•
•
A visible lump on the outside of the base of your big toe
Redness and swelling
Pain or soreness in the big toe that doesn’t go away
Restricted movement of the big toe
Difficulty finding shoes with the right fit ....continued on page 2

The most common cause of bunions is trendy shoes that crowd your toes, such as high
heels or shoes that are too tight. You might also thank your family, because bunions may be
inherited. They can also form as the result of a foot injury. Some medical conditions like
arthritis may cause bunion formation.
Don’t Self-Diagnose – Make an Appointment with Us
It’s smart to check in with us if you suspect that you have a bunion. We will examine your
foot and take x-rays to determine the extent of damage.
Bunions don’t go away on their own, but there are some conservative treatments we can
take to relieve your pain before considering surgery:
Who’s got the biggest
feet in the world?
Brahim Takioullah of
Morocco wears size 23
shoes, and, at 8’1” tall,
his feet measure 1 foot 3
inches and 1 foot 2.76
inches long. Imagine
paying for his custommade shoes!
Joke of the
month
Why isn’t your
nose 12 inches
long?
Because then it would be a
foot!

Going forward with surgery will be assessed on an individual basis. We’ll examine the
cause of your bunion and how far it’s progressed. Surgery will be considered only in severe
cases where your bunion causes you continuing pain and interferes with your daily life.
Not only will we evaluate and treat your condition, we will also coach you on the proper shoe
wear to lessen your symptoms and avoid bunion growth.
We can help! Contact our office for an appointment to evaluate your foot pain.

Trivia
What is the average
amount of sweat your feet
will release in a day?
A. 1 cup
B. 1 gallon
C. 1 teaspoon
D. 1/4 cup
Answer: A. 1 cup
Switching to comfortable shoes with low heels and lots of toe room
Using a heating pad or ice pack to reduce pain and swelling
Taking over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen or naproxen
Using custom-made orthotics, or shoe inserts, to redistribute pressure and prevent the
bunion from getting worse
Administering a cortisone injection
•
•
•
Buy well-fitting shoes with a wide
and deep toe box – there should
be space between your longest
toe and the tip of the shoe
Invest in your feet – purchase
well-made, sturdy shoes
Have a professional measure
both feet each time you shop
Try on shoes at the end of the
day when your feet are largest
Look for shoes deep enough to
accommodate your orthotics
DON’T buy:
•
•
•
•
•
Shoes with a pointed tip that crowd your toes
Shoes that squeeze any part of your foot
High-heeled shoes with heels taller than 2 inches – these shift body weight forward
and put excessive pressure on your toes and the ball of your foot
Peep-toe heels and flats that crunch toes together
Flat ballet-type shoes if you have low arches – you need more arch support
Visit our office for an accurate foot measurement and more information on bunion-friendly
footwear. You can also check out the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)
website for shoe brands and styles that have met their seal of approval.
