THIS MONTHS NEWSLETTER JULY 2015
Upcoming event
9th August annual BBQ & photo show results presentation at Jim & Mandy Shaw`s
Chairman`s notes
Hi everybody well after a busy June, July was even busier with a weekend away as mentioned last month, what a great weekend
visiting two great dealers and a Saturday night to remember (unfortunately I cant remember too much ) I do know I had a headache the following morning . July also saw 2 major koi shows with the East of England followed by the North East. A few of our
members did really well at the North East with myself , Paul Williams, Dave Crellin & Barry Thompson all showing there. Unfortunately the East of England show has now been cancelled & will not be run anymore . A great shame for the showing side of the
hobby.
August see`s our own photo show results announced at the clubs annual BBQ all members are welcome to attend so come on get
your names down if you haven`t already done so. I`m sure there will be some very happy people when they get their results. Hope
to see you all there.
Regards
Wayne
A WEEKEND AWAY AT YUME KOI & A4 KOI
This month we have had a weekend away “down south” well south west first at Yume Koi owned and run by Mike Snaden & his wife Elisa then on the
Sunday we went east across to A4 Koi run by Darren Maughan.
So Firstly we all met up at Jimmy Shaw`s as there was only 11 of us & it seemed daft to go up to Pete & Caroline`s farm to park up as we usually do
when there are quite a few cars, to be honest it was a poor turn out which is such a shame after all the effort that goes into the planning & arranging of
these trips and I`ll just say now you missed a great trip if you didn`t come,
We loaded are bags and cases on board and off we went it was great to be back on a trip as the banter and laughter started straight away as well as
the catch up on how everybody was doing with their koi & ponds & pond builds (Wayne) and where to put your hot tub if you have one (Wayne &
Maggie) plus it was nice to welcome Glenn & Ronnie on their first trip with us.
We stopped halfway down for a comfort break & a drink then back on the road I think we arrived around 12pm The weather was glorious nice & warm
Mike & Elisa made us more than welcome serving us a fantastic lunch all topped off with fresh cream scones & a very tasty Coffee cake (for them that
like it shame Mandy doesn`t like coffee) it was nice to have a chat with a couple of our forum members Stephen & Anthony who were there collecting
a few tosai they had selected from mike , I must say it was a pleasure being at Yume with Mike as he doesn`t hound you for a sale at all he just left us
to wander around his ponds doing our own thing some were even doing a bit of sunbathing in the loungers laid out on the lawn area but if you did
needed any help he was quick to help and give his opinions on how he thought certain Koi would develop or not as the case maybe and what a treat it
was seeing ( in my opinion ) some of the best koi in the country on sale at that moment plus the spectacle of the large pond with all the big girls
in ,there were some very nice pieces in especially a 5 step Kohaku which would grace any pond as well as the show scene in my humble opinion ,
one our bunch bought a nice tosai mukashi ogon & another of our bunch spotted a very nice sansai shiro utsuri which really took his eye, so much
so he went back the following week to get it.
Well after a very interesting and enjoyable few hours Mike offered to take us to a pond owned by his friend James carter a name some might know
from the show scene it was a shame James wasn`t available to show us his pond in person but our trip had coincided with a cricket match he was
playing in , when we arrived at James hose you would never have guessed what was in the back garden , James had recently been altering his pond
and garden but it was still a very nice set up with a very large pond built in the “ new way of building ponds for growing large koi” which is as long and
wide as you can fit in but only 4 to 5 feet deep and to say there were some large koi in is an under statement, there were several that had took prizes
at the larger koi shows and some smaller ones that were to be the next generation for showing I would imagine, after a hour it was time to say our
goodbye to Mike as we were heading off for our hotel for our overnight stay and evening meal .
On arrival at the hotel we all took to our rooms where me & mandy dropped straight off to sleep and were the last down for
our evening meal all the gang were sat outside the pub/ diner as the weather was still quite warm & we weren`t booked in
until later for our meal anyway the banter & laughter had already started as the drinks had started to flow , we got our call in
for our meal & were all placed on the same table which was nice as the laughter really started I must say I haven`t laughed
quite so much for a while thanks must mainly go to Wayne as he was really on form and had us all howling with laughter at
times.
The next morning after a very nice breakfast we set off for A4 koi owned and run by Darren Maughan, on arrival at Darrens
we were greeted with a great spectacle of red kites swirling round the skies above the area & Darren said it was a usual occurrence ( I wish I`d have had my binoculars) anyway Darren runs his business from behind his home but it is a large garden
with a centre piece of one of the best ( the way I would have a pond) ponds I have seen in a long time built in ground with
very large slate boulders behind and hanging over the edge of the pond which was in a kidney shape around 7 foot deep at
the larger end then had a small shelf around 2 / 3 foot deep with some very nice koi in which I think most were for sale also
in the landscaping were some very nice cloud pruned pine trees ( I think that’s what they were anyway ) Inside one of the
several very large sheds were 3 ponds with the smaller koi in for sale from which we (well most of us had our say) selected a
very nice tosai Tancho for one of our club members who couldn`t make the trip but was happy to be guided by Wayne over
the phone ( and trying to get him onto the correct website to see pictures of it ) then after bowling several go sanke Tosai
another member bought a very nice kohaku , when we had arrived a couple from our gang had complimented Darren on
some Bonsai trees he had on display in his garden to which he replied “ there all for sale “ well after a little discussion by the
couple mentioned 2 of them came back to Castleford on the bus with us and very nice they were too.
So it was time for home and after a another laughter filled journey as well as the usual discussions on koi & ponds & everything to do with the hobby we were back everyone said how much they had enjoyed the weekend and were looking forward
to the next one. So why not join in and come along next year we have some fantastic trips already planned.
SEE LAST PAGE FOR A FEW PICS FROM THE WEEKEND.
