FROM THE CEO
Snow Reason....
O
ne of my pet peeves, and based
on the many forums, social media
channels and the like, that we
follow, it pulls a few other chains too - and
that is snow field etiquette!
I’m not talking skier vs boarder rivalry;
xc vs downhill; moguls vs gates; one piece
vs bib and brace; fluoro vs bland; helmet
vs helmet hair - etc. I’m talking about
“simple, plain old-fashioned, down right,
let’s all have a great time, kumbaya, thanks
very much” type thoughtfulness.
One thing we religiously plough into our
kids is that a “please” and a “thank you”
gets you further than not - and being
considerate of others is an obligation,
rather than your choice… and let’s face it,
on balance, application of the same makes
for a civilised society - (and ski field!).
Everyone loves getting away - having a
holiday, a short break, or taking a day trip
somewhere. In general, we begin to plan,
trawl through advisory sites, search on
average 28 different venues and prices, start
saving, squirrel away the pennies, make
a few sacrifices, weigh up the alternatives
- then eventually book that holiday, short
break, or day trip somewhere, in the hope
of having an amazing experience and
cramming in as much as is possible.
That experience ultimately distils down
to one key objective… to have a bit of
fun. You might bond with family, meet
new people, try a new wine (or two) or
indulge in foods you might not have tried
before - or even, when here at Falls Creek,
switched the skis for a snowboard, or cross
country sticks, throw on some snowshoes,
take a snow mobile tour, try ski touring
or take a backcountry guided tour. But
ultimately, you go on a holiday, or take a
quick break to have some fun and most
of all - escape and take away from it some
great memories, a few selfies, a bit of Go
Pro footage and a social media post or two.
The one amazing fact that most visitors
to Falls Creek in winter have in common
with everyone else out on the snow fields
is they are here for exactly the same thing.
Everyone is united by the snow, the thrill
of snow sports and all have come here to
experience our amazing alpine village, ski
resort and the simply stunning high plains.
The varied level of capability and
familiarity with the resort and snow field
etiquette ranges from zero to exemplary.
So, here are a few tips - and these aren’t
just for the newbies. ie) Where do I leave
my gear when I’m on a break or grabbing a
bite to eat? Hint: in or on a rack! Not left
lying on the snow for others to trip over,
kick or stumble across. At the very least,

FROM THE CEO
place them away from a thoroughfare, if
the racks are full). ie) Where do I stop, sit
and do up my boots/bindings/adjust my
helmet, or wait for others in the party?
Hint: not in the unloading area off a lift).
If in doubt, on what or how - just ask!
Falls Creek has a fabulous reputation
for its friendliness and awesome towies,
instructors, shuttle drivers, ski patrollers,
hospitality and resort staff etc. They too
are here for a great time and ultimately
ensuring that you are too.
I’m not trying to be the fun police, but it’s
the little stuff that matters - and that little
stuff can undo all the great stuff!
The Alpine Responsibility Code attempts
to sum it up. Anyone who straps on planks,
a board, XC sticks, snow shoes etc, has an
obligation, a responsibility to other members
of the tribe, to at least do their bit to ensure
every day on snow, is a great (and safe) day on
snow. Respect gets respect - From the lift line,
to the slopes, through the park and resort.
Common sense, a bit of personal awareness
and courtesy ensures everyone has the best
opportunity to have a great day or night.
There are no exemptions to the above
- although a powder day comes close - even
though “there are no friends on a powder
day” or “you snooze you lose!” At Falls
Creek there is enough terrain for all to get
their fair share. Ok, sermon over.
Like all folk in the Resort, the Guest Services team are
out there to help ensure your holiday with us is the best
it possibly can be. Pic - Chris Hocking.
On to another favourite topic - the weather.
By the time you’re reading this, it is forecast
to be puking. Refer to my last paragraph
above. Now get out there and have some fun!

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA
Even More Opportunities
L
ast weekend Disabled Wintersport
Australia (DWA) teamed up with
Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR)
and delivered a pretty awesome program to eight
youngsters with disabilities from Melbourne.
We certainly got lucky with the weather! Blue
skies and great snow conditions made for what
I think has been the best few days of the season
so far. It always seems that when the DSR camp
is on we always get amazing weather! Last
year’s conditions were very much the same.
DSR does an fantastic job job of helping kids
that often don’t have the same opportunities
to participate in sports or social occasions
that most people have. As well as running
this winter camp with DWA, DSR runs
camps in the summer in much the same
manner. This is a great thing that really helps
the development of kids who are differently
abled, and helps them appreciate a good

time away which also give’s their parents or
guardians some respite time.
One thing that has come to my attention
recently is that there is a bit of a gap in
understanding amongst the community
about DWA volunteers and what they do
when guiding. There seems to be a bit of a
view that we only really work with Sit Ski’s
and if you volunteer you need to be a really
strong person that can handle a sit ski.
A large part of guiding and volunteering with
DWA revolves around general support and
decision making. Lots of DWA members are
people who are skiing or snowboarding with
disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Autism,
Sensory impairments such a Blindness or
Deafness and these people require a much
different type of support to someone who
is in a sit ski. This form of guiding is much
less physical. Sure you still have to be able to
ski or board, but there isn’t much lifting or
grunt needed.
A lot of the time when guiding and
helping people that are on regular ski’s or
snowboards, people ask me “Are there any
members on the hill today? I haven’t really
seen any participants this weekend” so it is
an interesting factor in what we do. Whereas
a lot of the time it is easy to see our members
on snow, as it’s pretty hard to miss a sit

ski carving along a run. A lot of the time
the people we are helping out present no
differently to the general public. This part
of Snowsports is most likely something that
makes skiing and boarding so appealing to
our members - once they put on their ski gear
and get out on the hill, there is nothing that
separates them from everyone else. Having
said that, you may now feel a little more like
volunteering. If so, give me a call. •

In Memory of David
D
avid Vigo and his business partner
were the people responsible for
bringing the Soweto Gospel Choir
to Mount Beauty in 2008. David, as a local
resident, was very grateful for the fabulous
work done by our local CFA units during
the 2003 and 2006 fires. Bringing the
Choir to Sydney and then to Melbourne
meant that David could organise a stopover in Mount Beauty. And, not only did
the choir perform to a packed house; they
also visited the Neighbourhood Centre and
met with kids from the schools.
Another Australian Tour is now taking
place, and once again, David and his
business partner were able to organise a
stop-over in Mount Beauty - on Friday
29th July (next Friday). This time David
has ensured that the funds generated
go directly to the Mount Beauty
Neighbourhood Centre - to continue the
great work done at the centre.
David has since succumbed to illness and
passed away last week. Subsequently, his
wife Kitty and the family have invited
the community to join together after
the concert for a Celebration Supper - to
celebrate David’s life and the great work he
has done for this community. •
A Glittering Success
A clear, cold Saturday night saw the launch
of the Champagne Club Kiewa Valley’s
inaugural Snowball. Over fifty elegantly
attired party-goers donned their finest
frocks, furs and suits to embrace this year’s
theme of “Feathers and Fur”.
The Mount Beauty Community Centre
was transformed into an elegant winter
wonderland whilst guests danced the night
away to Melbourne cover band Geronimo.
The mid-winter black tie ball is the premier
event for the valley’s newest charitable
endeavour and guests were treated to fine
wine, drinks and canapes.
“We are thrilled with the response to our
first mid-winter ball” said Helen Zirnstein,
Vice President of the Champagne Club.
“We intend to make this an annual event, so
to have the first ball so well received is really
exciting for next year’s event” she added.
The Champagne Clubs mantra of “social,
charitable, local” was showcased at
Saturday’s evening event and the club plans
on using funds raised to support Kiewa
Valley locals who may fall outside regular
funding options.

Wine-Maker’s Dinner
A
collaboration of two talented chefs,
Mat Hallam and Zorren Miller,
mine host Barry Iddles and Brad
Rey, Zonte Footstep’s Vigneron, is the
perfect trifecta (or if you want to be picky
quadrella) that will combine to create a
not-to-be-missed winemakers dinner at
Elk @ Falls Restaurant and Bar.
Mark next Wednesday 27th July on your
calendar. That’s when superb cuisine and
award-winning South Australian wines
will be served during the four-course winemakers dinner.
Rey has carried out vintages in California,
Oregon and France before joining the SAbased winemaking company that believe
wines are an integral part of daily life to
be enjoyed with food, whether you are in
Spain, Italy, Portugal - or Australia.
Elk Restaurant’s wine-makers dinner is

The Beards
Recently, we, The Beards, have announced
that we will be ending our touring and
live performing career with a farewell
tour in 2016. The fact that we have had a
touring and live performing career at all
has surprised many, including ourselves.
The fact that we can go out on our own
terms with a farewell tour such as this
is something we are deeply grateful for.
And it would be remiss of us if we didn’t
offer a genuine and heartfelt thankyou to
everyone who has made the last ten years of
beard-related madness possible.
As few people other than those who have
attempted to do it will understand, the
personal, financial and emotional sacrifices
necessary to make a living as an unsigned
original touring band catch up with you
eventually. Whilst being on stage in front
of all of you can be the most awesome job
in the world, we feel that now is the right
time to (hopefully) go out with a bang
with one last tour, rather than slowly fade
from relevance until we’re nothing but a
quirky answer to a 2011 Hottest 100 quiz
question.
Being a novelty band (and we’re not afraid
to admit it), we faced an uphill battle
from the start in many respects -we’ve had
precious little radio play over the journey,
the majority of festivals didn’t want to
know about us, and most self-respecting
music fans would screw up their nose at
the idea, at least until they saw us live. And
so to win people over, we toured. Then we
toured more. Then we toured again, until

people began to take notice. That’s the
reality we faced, as do many young bands

Off And Racing
R
esiding at Falls Creek for the entire
season means that you prepare
yourself for the best and the worst
snow conditions. In the space of a week
you can go from skiing in rain and slush
to skiing in some of the most beautiful
conditions in the world. Last week began
by soaking us with rain, then blew our
beanies off with blizzard winds but luckily
finished with some sunshine. Falls Creek
was blessed with the most perfect weekend,
weather and snow conditions that couldn’t
be match by many places around the
world. It is weekends like this that defy any
stigma that Australian skiing is sub-par.
Victorian Junior Championships
This weather provided perfect conditions
for the Victorian Junior Cross-Country
Ski Championships, held on Saturday and
Sunday. These competitions saw the best
Victorian junior skiers battle it out for the
several state titles that were up for grabs. For
some, these races mark the beginning of a
long season and serve as a preparation event
for Senior Championships that are set to
come in weeks ahead. However, it was great
to see so many young skiers participating in
their first cross-country ski events, and also
some great representation from high schools
such as MLC and Wangaratta High School.
Saturday’s race was a 400/800m classic sprint
on a well-groomed and tough course. Heading
out of the bowl and up the Hoppet start,
skiers were challenged with a big hill before
turning around and heading back along the
aqueduct. Icy-corners proved to be a challenge
for many however as the day progressed there
were countless moments of great skiing. After
a time trial, heat and semi final, athletes
faced off in finals. The results were:

Winners Interview
T
HIS WEEK interviewed two of
the winners from Sunday’s race.
Maysen Duffy and Fedele de
Campo - who both took away U16 titles
from this weekend’s 5km distance race.
Here were some of their answers…
TW: How are you feeling about this race
season after the first set of races?
Maysen: Optimistic and excited but also
anxious. These races showed us where we
are at with our performance level. I am
anxious for Junior Nationals in Perisher
since the races are the opposite disciplines
of Vic Juniors and I haven’t done as much
classic distance and skate sprint racing.
TW: What kind of training have you been
doing in the lead up to this winter?
Fedele: My good old brother Seve has been
training me like Rocky Balboa so I feel
Travelling to
Falls this winter?
much more confident in my skiing and leg
strength particularly. I’ve done a lot more
consistent and ski specific training, which
has boosted my performance. No pain no
gain!
TW: What is your ultimate goal for 2016
race season?
Maysen: My ultimate goal is to get a
qualifier for the Australian Junior team
because I have always wanted to be a part
of it and I feel I am in the right place to
achieve that, hopefully I can back it up in
the competitions to come!
Fedele: My ultimate goal would be to win
races at Junior Nationals and also beat
some of the big boys because they need to
be served some of their own medicine. If I
can achieve one of these results I would be
elated.
These two junior skiers, along with
many others will head to Perisher on the
30th/31st of July for Junior National
Championships, stay tuned to ‘THIS
WEEK’ to track their progress.

More For Your Holiday
W
hat a fabulous weekend we
had last week. Bluebird days,
excellent snow and fantastic
skiing. It was all too good and busy to be
looking for other things to do. After a day
like that, it requires a spa, a bevvy or two
and a nice relaxing dinner - in preparation
of getting up and doing it all again.
This coming weekend is also looking
good - with some puking snow later in the
week. If it’s good - get out and enjoy. If
it’s not - or you need a breather, here are a
heap of other things you can do.
As well as being listed in this paper on a
weekly basis, the extra activities are all
listed on the back of the Trail Map that
everyone should have in their pocket
as they go out the door. Once you have
decided on an activity you would like to
enjoy, you may simply book it with any of
the staff in the Falls Creek Sports shops either at the QT shop, or the Village Bowl
shop. This makes it easier for customers,
and if you’re not sure, phone the Activities

Introduced a couple of seasons back, the
idea of a street party is simply to provide an
informal opportunity for visitors to join with
staff and have a bit of a chat. There might be
a bit of story-telling and we may even find a
marshmallow to toast over the open fire.
During much of a person’s visit to Falls,
most of the contact with the team is at the

coaching from an instructor and buying
a meal or a beer over the bar. Having
the opportunity for a casual, informal

DINING OUT
Astra Lodge
I
could rave about the massive stone fireplace
and the gorgeous leather couches that
surround it. I could rave about the beautiful
wooden mural of the Alps, the startling lighting
or the stunning window views out into the snow
however - when it comes to Astra I am going to
rave about the food. The food! Oh my stars!
The first thing that blew me away was the
incredible home baked bread placed in front us
after being seated. It came with a dish of crisp
and fruity olive oil and a side of Mt Buffalo
olives. The bread is baked on premises and
literally comes out of the oven at six pm when the
first guests sit down for their meals. It is soft and
fluffy as a sponge with an amazing thin crust,
lightly salted with a hint of rosemary, absolutely
more-ish. If you are lucky you perused the menu
sharpish and ensured that your bread came
not too far before your antipasto plate, if not
they will give you more! More I say!
The Antipasto is very meat-centric (sure that is
a word) but also comes with some tasty pickled

vege. In this day and age it is a little un-cool to get
excited about meat but this is Italian cuisine and
of very classical persuasion. The Antipasto plate is
all about cured, seasoned, crafted meat; Formichi

Cacciatore, San Jose Artisanal: Bresaola Chianina
& Mild Chianina Salami. Immaculately
presented, insanely tasty and very ‘oldy worldy

beginner’s lesson #1 Chianina (pronounced key a - knee - na), is a breed of white cattle. They take
their name from the Val di Chiana which is a
valley near Arezzo and Siena (Tuscany) in central
Italy. They are regarded as the largest and one of
the oldest breeds of cattle in the world and are
currently being bred/nurtured rather successfully
in the Gippsland region of Victoria.
We chose to supplement the antipasto with a
serve of the Bruschetta of the day. Italian for
beginners lesson #2 - that is pronounced Broosket-tuh. But who cares how you say it because
melty buffalo mozzarella goodness combined
with zesty rocket salad, lashings of pesto on that
home baked bread equals tastebud nirvana.
To compliment this fabulous feast is an extensive
wine list, you would be hard pushed to find a

Italian wines on the list and even a Spanish
sherry. We chose a glass of the Local Pinot Noir
from Indigo winery in Beechworth to kick
things off. In my opinion it was a perfect, rich
earthy choice to sip with the flavourful entrees.
We graduated to a bottle of Wild Duck Merlot
from Heathcote when it came to complementing
our mains or “Secondi”. There was a choice of
four main meals when we dined and our table
chose three. It is a pleasure to say that they
were all utterly divine. The T-bone came with
a fabulous crumbed eggplant, it was a massive
piece of meat and I am half proud/half ashamed
to say that it required me to pick it up in my

fingers and scour the meat from the bone.
I love to see old fashioned, “not so trendy” cuts on
a menu and it is exciting to claim the Osso Bucco
with saffron risotto and gremolata as pretty much
the winner of the evening. The Lamb Spezzatino
was also a showstopper. We had no room for
the fourth option, Eggplant Rolls with ricotta,
spinach, pine nuts and red capsicum sauce but for
a vegetarian option it sounded good enough
to tempt even the hardiest of carnivores.
The menu includes a selection of pasta, risotto
and sides of course. The pasta is all home-made
apart from the Orecchiette. The great shame
is we had no room to sample this part of the
fare. Astra is a very family friendly venue and
kids have their own menu “Bambini” to choose
from that offers classic kid friendly meals such
as Spaghetti, burgers and schnitzel.
It’s not often when the food is this great that I
manage to leave room for dessert or “Dolce”. In
this case it was well worth rolling out of my chair
a little rounder than when I sat down. This is a
trip to Italy via food so for sweets there is Torte,
gelato, mousse with mascarpone and tiramisu.
So who is at the helm of Astra? Who is
responsible for this fantastic food? That would
be last year’s Soux chef Emma Handley. Emma
has served 28 years at Mt Hotham in the
hospitality industry and 5 years at Villa Gusto
in the Buckland valley. Food this great, so
lovingly crafted and carefully prepared comes
from many years of experience. If you are up
at Falls Creek and looking for a really special
meal it would be hard to go past Astra and the
wonderful side trip to Italy that Emma has
created. Buon Appetito! Italian for beginners #3

full time, year round Alpine school, Falls
Creek PS 5067.
Prior to 1965, couples with small children,
or those planning to start a family, would
move away due to there being no school
facilities in Falls Creek. By the mid 60’s
a few families with school age children
established themselves in the village, and
a need arose for a school to encourage
them to stay. An enrolment of seven
children and a building was required
before the Education Department could
become involved. The Falls Creek Tourist
Area Management Committee of the
day gifted the families some land (to

PARK NAMING PROPOSAL
Council being the responsible authority
under the Geographic Place Names Act
1998, is required to approve the proposed
naming of a park in Mount Beauty.
The existing park is located on Lakeside Avenue, at
the southern end of the Swimming Pool.
The park name proposed is ‘Hydro Park.’ The
name is proposed as it reflects that the town and
community was established by families who came
to develop the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.
Council invites public comment, in writing, regarding the
proposed park name. Submissions should be sent to Council
by close of business on Friday, 19 August, 2016.

dismantled and reassembled on the mountain.
Unfortunately the building was delivered too
late into the season but the following summer,
unable to hire builders, working bees began,
beer was on tap, BBQ’s were cooked, and a
schoolroom with an oil heater donated by
Cecil Dobson from Winterhaven was erected.
In 1971 lobbying began to secure a full time
teacher. Bob Lee, Cecil Dobson and Dick
Humphries took out a loan and the school
was refurbished and opened as the ‘Bob Scott
Memorial Hall’ for the 1972 season. After
three years of fund raising by the school
committee the hall was paid off in full.
Eventually the Education Department
took control, updated the classrooms and
provided accommodation for the teachers.
In 1982, discussions began surrounding
construction of a ‘new’ Primary School, a
joint property with the community and the
Education department. After it was decided
that the funds could not be raised fully by
the community, the department constructed
a new facility and students moved in on July
1st 1985. The Bob Scott Memorial school
building now sits on a property on Tawonga.
Whilst the snow sports program is a
highlight of the winter term, and much
success has been achieved over the years
in Interschool competitions, Falls Creek
Primary offers all year round education.
Falls Creek Primary is and always has been
a community school. Many children have
passed through the front doors, some have
gone on to successful snow sports careers,
others have returned to take over family
businesses but all have been left with fond
memories of growing up in Falls Creek. •

OUR MIM PROGRAM
A Unique Opportunity
N
ext week from 25-29 July the first
Mim Sodergren Women’s Ski
Program kicks off for season 2016.
Look for the groups of ladies with their
ski instructors having a laugh and skiing
stylishly around Falls Creek and make sure
to say hello.
Mim started the program back in the late
1980’s with the local ladies, recognising
women learn better in situations they
feel comfortable in and that our physical
variations to men required ski instructors
to adapt teaching tactics and methods to
be more suitable for those variations.
The program has evolved since the eighties
when it was a regular day once a week to a
full five days involving six hours of skiing
and coaching a day. The consecutive days
give women the opportunity to really build
on their skiing skills and confidence with
attentive coaching by highly qualified
16
female instructors in modern skiing
techniques. The groups are small and allow
the women to develop a connection with the
instructor and everyone within the group.
As female instructors, we have a strong
empathy and understanding of women, we
get women because we are women!
The way the program has been designed allows
for maximum interaction between all the
women in the program with the opportunity to
talk to everyone at the après events organised,
such as welcome drinks, shopping, a dinner
and lunch together at a different café each day.
The social program facilitates a more relaxed
atmosphere within the group and allows the
participants to feel more comfortable with
each other and their instructor, so when we
venture out on to the slopes the whole learning
journey becomes more enjoyable.
I personally knew Mim and have been
involved in teaching the program since
1997; it has been and is a great honour
to be able to assist in perpetuating Mim’s

original ideas into modern teaching
today. It is rewarding to observe the
improvements the women make in their
skiing as they return year after year to the
program, bringing new friends with them.
It is also wonderful to see new friendships
grow between the women and between
the instructors and the women, some have
evolved into strong friendships over the years.
I am looking forward with anticipation to
welcoming the new and returning women of
the Mim Sodergren Women’s Ski Program
on the 25th of July 2016. •
