FROM THE CEO
And the Winner Is…
F
irstly, a big thanks to all those people
who came along to vote in the FEXit
Poll. (1000 of you took the time and
it wasn’t even compulsory!). The result was
an overwhelming majority (aka landslide)
claimed victory and the ‘change’ vote,
perhaps protest vote, earmarked the return
of Halley’s Comet to the mountain.
Spending two hours on the voting booth,
it was amazing to hear the stories and
recollections about the building of the lift,
the excitement on the prospect of change
and the debate around pronunciation.
More interestingly was the demographic bias.
Much like BREXIT where the majority of
voters were aged 55 and over - it would be fair
to say, the same thing was somewhat evident
with the FEXit vote. Furthermore, I think
the electoral commission needs to investigate
‘ski through polling’ for the next election
(which could be sooner rather than later!), if
held during the snow season as the FEXit vote
proved extremely popular - and unlike the
Senate ballot, required simply two choices!
I mentioned last week about the Falls Creek
Race Club and how amazing those young
athletes are. Well their XC cousins have
been in resort training like crazy across the
65 kilometres of XC trail in preparation for
the junior championships. As mentioned
last year, I have promised to enter a Hoppet
event this year, kicking off with the Joey
- which will be a family affair with all
members of the CEO crew enrolling. So in
preparation, I spent the evening with trail
groomer extraordinaire Geoff Sorenson,
out in the ‘Martin Rommel’ Prinoth slope
grooming machine perusing the network
and getting a lesson on ‘snow science.’
What Geoff and the groomer team don’t
know about snow, the snow pack, physical
properties of snow, snow physics and its
metamorphosis isn’t worth knowing.
It was an enlightening evening. At times,
it was a little scary too. Cutting the track
on the Mt. McKay loop and a service track
to the peak just after a blizzard was a little
hairy, but the ability of the groomer and its
sheer power was amazing. However, with
Geoff in charge of his twelve buttoned
joy stick, clicking and pointing the device
in every and all direction, getting the
seven tonne machine to obey his every
wrist movement was like watching an
orchestra conductor wave his baton. Just

not as melodic. Those machines are near
on unstoppable. Big thanks to Geoff for
letting me join him.
As has been the case in the last few weeks,
I sit here writing this column and the snow
is falling outside. BHP Road is quickly
being consumed and changed to white,
and knowing that the familiar sound of
the snow clearers preparing the roads for
guests is going to replace my alarm in the
morning and is simply one of the best ways
to be woken up. More so because it also
means that in the morning guests will be
greeted to the simply gorgeous picture of
the Falls Creek village draped in a canopy
of snow and with ‘freshies’ galore out on
the mountain, it will be another great day!
Now the voting is over, get out there and
hit the slopes!

ENTERTAINMENT
It’s Harvey Hour
G
lenn and Leonie and the Falls Creek
Hotel have traditionally supplied
some great entertainment for their
regular Tuesday and Thursday Happy
Harvey Hour - and this week is no different.
Peter Miller is a prominent entertainer
/front man /vocalist /guitarist on the
Australian band scene. He has performed
in a variety of different styles from Rock,
Pop, Jazz, and Blues spanning over 25 years
on the Australian Music Scene.
Pete was fortunate to start his career as
a teenager, in an already successful band
that had many long standing residences in
Melbourne and regular tours of the east
coast of Australia. As lead vocalist for several
successful acts including his band “The
Nazz” who at one stage enjoyed unrivalled
success, performing to regular packed houses
throughout Melbourne for many years
during the late 80’s and early 90’s.
As the demise of the Big Band scene set in
through the mid 90’s, Peter sought to hone
his skills as an acoustic performer doing
mostly Duo shows and holding several
long standing residencies at venues such as
South Yarra Saloon, Sorrento Hotel, P.J.
Obriens Southbank, Portland Hotel City
and many more.

Peter Miller. Pic - Courtesy Peter Monagle.
“My first trips to Falls Creek were in the
early eighties, playing in bands at The
Sundance Inn and The Man. I have fond
memories of “Harvey Hour” at Falls Creek
Hotel when it would be a competition to
see which table could stack their empty
jugs to the ceiling first! I don’t remember
if we ever won but we sure had a lot of fun
trying” said Pete.
“I always wanted to play at Falls Creek
Hotel as it had such a great atmosphere
and everyone was happy. Some years later
I meet Glenn & Leonie and was invited to
perform, which I did, and have been going
up there ever since.”
Pete’s repertoire consists of tried and proven,
classic hits from artists such as The Beatles,
The Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond, Eric
Clapton, Bruce Springsteen & Paul Kelly to
the more current songs of Ben Harper, Jack
Johnston, Jason Mraz, Foo Fighters, Red
Hot Chilli Peppers and a whole lotta stuff in
between. And you can enjoy this talent this
week at the Falls Creek Hotel Harvey Hour
- Tuesday and Thursday! •

DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA
Training the Trainers
L
ast weekend at Falls Creek, Disabled
Wintersport Australia (DWA) ran our
annual guide training weekend. We had
a great mix of local and imported volunteers,
which always makes for a great weekend with
everyone bringing something different to the
table. Everyone had a great weekend and stood
up well against the cold windy conditions,
and, as always, we were impressed by the
enthusiasm of the new volunteers!
DWA guides have great opportunities to
grow their skills within the organisation,
as all of our Adaptive Trainers are also
volunteers. They all started out as new
guides, and over the years as they have
continued their training and engagement,
they have progressed to teaching and
introducing our new guides to the world of
adaptive skiing. This kind of progression
and involvement is something that we
thoroughly encourage as our volunteers are
DWA’s key resource! Without our Guides,
Trainers and sheer people power, we
wouldn’t be able to provide nearly as much
support or services to our members.
One thing that we are especially happy
about - is the increase in interest and
engagement from the younger percentage
of the community from the Falls Creek Mount Beauty area. We had three youngun’s
training on the weekend, Nik Sugden, Evie
Mullins and Sid Williams. These guys and
gals have all been skiing at Falls Creek for
a long time, and have honed their ski skills
through the Race Club programs. Being such
strong young skiers they make great young
guides, and are leading the way for the next
generation of volunteers. We really appreciate
the efforts of these three and look forward
to watching them progress as guides over the
coming years.
Now looking forward, to this coming
weekend, the 8th-10th July, we have our
first Member Camp for the year. DWA
member camps are a Managed Sports
Program that are designed to help people
with disabilities get on snow. By removing
any of the organisational difficulties for
the members, by organising all on-snow
activities, accommodation, guides, food and
transport makes it easier for people that may
be interested in coming to the snow, but don’t
Be part of the team!
Race Club
As a member of the Falls Creek Race Club,
young athletes can…
• Learn Life Skills in a wonderful, rewarding environment.
• Make friends for life - with opportunities to travel the world.
• Learn to ski and board in a family freindly environment.
Programs from primary to late teens - including tertiary tuition
for full time athletes.

know where to start. We love running the
member camps as there is always a fair mix of
Snowsports disciplines that we work with.
Whether members are snowboarders,
skiers, Sit Skiers or anything in between
we welcome them on our camps. These
differences also make for a good learning
experience for the guides as they get to
work with many different people and skills.
One of the best things about the DWA
camps program is the social side of the
weekends, volunteers and members come
together from all walks of life, all to share
their passion for the Snowsports industry,
it’s a very enjoyable thing to facilitate. •

RACE CLUB AUCTION
Auctioneering Success
T
he annual Falls Creek Race Club Auction
night was held last Monday night in the
St Falls Board Room at QT West.
Strongly supported by the local community,
the Falls Creek Race Club is a not-for-profit
club that relies heavily on the support of
parents, patrons and local businesses for
its continued success in training the next
generation of skiers and boarders.
While being the major fundraiser for the
club, this event also doubles as a huge
social function for the club with attendees
including parents both past and present, Ski
& Snowboard Australia representatives Brad
Wall, Shawn Fleming and Chris McKnight.
Falls Creek Resort Management was
represented by CEO Stuart Smythe. Falls
Creek Ski Lifts was represented by Director
of Ski Fields, Merlin Entertainments,
Helen Moran.
The Falls Creek Race and Events department
was represented by Steve Crowley with head
coach Mario Hanausek and his talented
coaching team and Program Director Graeme
and Karen Cox.
Add to this group a great smattering of the
local community all catching up for a bit
of fun and flair at the half way point of the
holiday training program.
The success of the night as a fundraiser
relies heavily on the generosity of donations
from local businesses, ski industry vendors
and individuals including both club
members and others to support the club.
The major auction items were auctioned by the
MC for the night Steve Lee who developed some
fervour with the bidding for the main auction
items. Steve, a former Race Club member
before his World Cup success, whipped up a
competitive spirit among the bidders with many
items tightly fought for. The diversity of products
for auction was quite wide from a pail of paint
through to framed landscape photographs,
meat packs, assorted gift packs through to
ski and snowboard accessories. All full list of
supporters and donors will be published and
thanked in next week’s paper.
Thanks to catering for the night by Barry
Iddles and his team from Elk, the night ran
smoothly and capped off another successful
year for the club. A goodly amount of drinks
was donated by Elk Lodge. (Thank you).
The committee wishes to thank the support
of Falls Creek Resort Management, Falls
Creek Ski Lifts P/L and Gina Schoff for
coordinating the event along and the many
businesses who support the annual initiative.
The money raised will be going toward the Race
Club’s building fund - to ensure the continued
success of the race club in the years ahead. •

The BLT
Sounds like a bacon, lettuce and tomato, but
you can be sure it is a bit more serious than that.
The first of two Board Lounge Throwdowns’
is less than two weeks away! A rail jam
comp for both skiers and snowboarders,
the BLT was a block buster of a night last
year, showcasing just how much local talent
we have here in Falls Creek. With a great
spectator turn out in Slalom Plaza and an epic
set up thanks to the hard work of the Falls
Terrain Park Groomers and Park Rangers,
the BLT went off with a bang leaving
people itching for the next event in the new
Falls Creek Freestyle Series.
The rider judged event will display some
of the new features that will be seen in our

each other to try new and ridiculous tricks.
We expect this year to be even bigger and

impressive bruises.

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
Activities Galore
T
here is something for everyone in the
family! As the snow below our feet
becomes deeper, our weekends become
more jam-packed. This incredible snow
allows us to run all the events that our
hearts desire so make sure you keep
your eyes peeled for dates to come. Over
the past weekend there were two main
events that captured the attention and
enthusiasm of the cross-country ski
community.
The Birkebeiner Classic, held on Saturday
and Falls Creeks’ very own Fast and
Female activity day held on Sunday. It is
events like this that strengthen the crosscountry ski community and invite all to
contribute to the growth of grassroots
participation. Those who gave xc skiing a
go this weekend experienced a sport that
could get their heart rate up without too
much of a struggle, as well as being able to
connect with the natural environment in
the process.
Birkebeiner Classic
The busy weekend commenced with the
Birkebeiner Classic race. Hosted by the
Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, this race allows
competitors to test themselves over a 2.5km,
5km or 10km course in classical style. Although
the day began with some unfavourable weather,
conditions soon improved and blue sky could
be seen from all over the trails. Results for all
age categories are listed below:

Fast and Female
If two words were used to describe
Sunday morning in the Nordic Bowl,
those words would be ‘GIRL POWER.’
The annual Fast and Female event held
at Falls Creek saw over sixty females head
up the hill to participate in a morning
filled with fun activities. Fast and Female
is an international organisation that runs
programs across a myriad of sports. These
events are designed for 8-19 year olds
and aim to combat the rate at which girls

CROSS COUNTRY NEWS
drop out of sport throughout their teens.
Noticing this worthy cause, the crosscountry community jumped on the idea
and began hosting their own Fast and
Female events, with such great success that
they have been back year after year.
Although we have managed with little
snow in the past, the fantastic snow we
have at the moment made the day run
flawlessly. Even with a little fog, the swarm
of girls dressed all in pink and geared
up with some funky Fast and Female
merchandise, were bright enough to turn
heads all over the mountain. With three
groups of girls aged eight to nineteen and
one very large and enthusiastic group of
ladies (who put in an incredible effort)
the day was set to begin. The groups
participated in four activity stations, each
lead by one of our superstar Fast and
Female leaders, many of whom have skied
on the Australian cross-country national
team and even at the Olympics. These
stations aimed to improve the girls’ ski
technique, challenge their agility skills and
promote some great group fun. A definite
highlight of the day from many was the
opportunity to try Laser Biathlon. For
most, this was a completely new experience
and a great chance to step outside their
comfort zones, combining both skiing and
laser shooting. Thanks to the generosity of
the Telemark Nordic Ski Club, providing
us with equipment and expert coaching,
it was great to see some competitive spirit
emerge during the laser biathlon relays.
After two hours of tough work on snow,
all groups returned together to debrief
and award some prizes. As the day was all
about empowering women, we thought
we’d provide a little more of an incentive to
those who worked extra hard throughout
the activities. Thanks to our partnership
with Articfit sportswear we were able to
give one girl in each group a prize and one
of the ladies a pair of compression tights.
Articfit is a woman’s active wear brand that
promotes female empowerment through
movement, exactly what the day of crosscountry skiing aimed to promote. It was
fantastic to work alongside this brand and
hope they continue to inspire women in
sport like Fast and Female does. •
The Weekend
This weekend is no less busy than last.
With two large events lined up Saturday
and Sunday the cross-country ski spirit
will no doubt be thriving on the trails.
On Saturday 9th of July, the Snow Trek
& Travel High Plains Tour will be held.
This event is a freestyle (skate or classic)
race with four course distances on offer.
Participants can choose between a 2.5 km,
5 km, 10 km, and even a brand new 1 km
fun event to encourage race participation
from all no matter what age or ability level.
On Sunday the YMCA Howman’s Gap
Victorian Relays (either 2.5km or 5km) are
open to any three person team willing to
take up the challenge (and flush out the
lactate from Saturday’s race.) Team up with
two friends and challenge some others and
you may be on your way to a race victory.
Both of these events only cost $5 to enter
and will commence at 11am -except for
the 1km fun event which will begin at
12 noon. There are some awesome spot
prizes on offer and one major prize to be
randomly drawn at the relays thanks to the
kindness of Howman’s Gap. One lucky
winner will win accommodation for two at
Howman’s Gaps with meals provided. Now
you’ve got the incentive, go check it out! •

FALL LINES
Yoga Snoga
T
wo Falls Creek-based Yoga teachers
have announced they will participate
in a five-week program that offers an
insight into numerous branches of yoga.
Starting at 6:30pm on July 13th the
Wednesday evening Snoga sessions will
be held in the Falls Creek Boardroom and
will offer combinations of Yin, Asana and
Pranayama Yoga.
Hosted by Karyn (Kaz) Wicks and Janette
Lawson, the weekly series will revolve
around the wishes of the participants.
Kaz said “What I will teach is a ‘mix
and match’ session that will complement
Janette’s gentle Yin class. Yoga has been a
lifetime journey for me and whilst I have
been traditionally trained, I am aware of
the many different varieties of yoga and
how it has evolved.”
Janette Lawson, the energy behind the Snoga
Yoga Retreats at Trackers Mountain Lodge,
concludes the Wednesday evening yoga
sessions (starting at 7:30pm) with an insight
into Yin Yoga. Janette says there are numerous
benefits from the very popular form of yoga
and it compliments a day on the slopes.
This slower paced yoga supports
your adrenals and activates your
parasympathetic nervous system because
we slow down. We begin to rest and we
give ourselves permission to rest.
Yin Yoga has the same goals and objectives
as any other school of yoga; however, it
directs the stimulation normally created
in the asana portion of the practice deeper
than the superficial or muscular tissues
(which we are calling the yang tissues).
Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues,
such as the ligaments, bones, and even the
joints of the body that normally are not
exercised very much in a more active style
of asana practice.
Suitable for almost all levels of students,
Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the
dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of
yoga that emphasise internal heat, and the
lengthening and contracting of our muscles.
Yin Yoga generally targets the connective
tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

TACO & TAPAS TUESDAYS
It’s a Talent
M
ount Beauty is a small town and
dining-out options are limited.
The venues that do exist are all
great quality and offer a varied menu. What
I have always admired in this town is the
way that each venue communicates with
the others to ensure that at least someone is
open every night - even the slow mid-week
nights where barely an owl hoots.
This winter there is a new option on the block
but you will need to buckle up and adventure
out to 52 Freda’s Lane, Tawonga; home of
Bogong Horseback Adventures and Spring
Spur Stay. The catch is that you will only
be able to do it on a Tuesday starting from
5pm. If you do make the journey to rural
Tawonga where the owls sit on the fence post
to welcome you, it will be well worth the trip.
Bogong Horseback Adventures has been
operating for the last 30 years giving
locals and tourists the chance to explore
on horseback the beautiful mountains
that surround this town. Kath and Steve
Baird established the property known as
Spring Spur and their sons have helped
them run and expand their business over
time. Two years ago Lin and Clay Baird
built a beautiful Barn building under the
tutelage of their father who is an architect
and builder. The barn includes a woodfired pizza oven, a well-stocked bar, a
full kitchen, a stunning chandelier made
of horseshoes and more than enough
room to comfortably host a swag of locals
and tourists lucky enough to sample the
wonderful food they grow and cook. The
timber is largely recycled from places such
as the Mount Beauty Chalet and even as
far away as the Barwon Heads Bridge.
The gorgeous Red Gum bar comes from
Yarrawonga Coach Builder’s workshop and
is 150 years old.
Brothers Clay and Lin have an interesting
grab bag of life experience between them
that includes multi-media design, film and
television, guiding horseback tours in the Alps
and horse and pack mule trips in California
thru places like Yosemite and the Sierra
Nevada’s, not to mention plenty of time spent
surfing in Mexico. This experience is what has
largely inspired the Mexican theme for their
Tuesday night menu. The boys swap cheffing
and bar tending on any given evening and
they have created a place that is casual,
warm and welcoming for their family,
friends and now for you too.
The menu is simple, the prices totally
reasonable. There is a Tapas selection at $5 per
plate and Tacos are $5 each as are Coronas
and the local beers. Speaking of drinks the
selection is mostly local; beer, wine, cider
and did I mention the Margaritas? Tequila
& Mescal heaven - Oh My Stars!!! Lin’s wife
Alex works as assistant wine maker under Jo
Marsh at Billy Button wines in Porepunkah.
The Cellar door is at Bright and the grapes
are sourced largely from the Alpine Valleys.
We sampled the Tempranillo, which was the
perfect accompaniment to our flavourful
dishes. Billy Button has produced their 3rd
vintage and they tend to favour the lesserknown varieties for their wine crafting. There
are several interesting selections available.
I can heartily recommend the mixed plate
of five soft corn Tacos that will set you back
$20 and there are enough vegetarian options
to keep you sated. The Spanish omelette is
particularly tasty and of course the eggs come

from the chickens that share the farm. Kath
Baird has invested huge amounts of time in
the garden and many of the ingredients are
grown within a stone’s throw from the door
including coriander, chillies, lemons, limes
and horseradish.
The flavours are fresh, simple and clean,
unlike our Aussie version of Mexican that
comes drowned in cheese and refried bean
chud. Oh my goodness, can I have a quick
rave about the horseradish? - I am in love! It
is grown here, grated and mixed with vinegar
and comes with white-bait on crusty rounds

we can take advantage while we are here.

the village and the slopes of Falls Creek.
Whether you are a long-time local, or a

and the guide is well versed in the area. Call

Snowmobile Tours
The opportunity to ride you own
snowmobile does not come along that often.
It sure ain’t gonna happen in Collins Street but it will happen on the slopes of Falls Creek
and the Bogong High Plains. When the snow
hits, make sure you plan to enjoy an exciting
snowmobile tour as part of your holiday. You
can either ride your own machine (you must
have a valid, current drivers licence) or you
can go out as the Pillion Passenger, on the
back with a competent guide. The snow, the
scenery, the fresh air - definitely ain’t gonna
get in Collins Street.
Helicopter Flights
Forest Air Helicopters are a local quality
chopper service based in Albury. They offer
several services including a ferry service from
Albury to the slopes; from Mount Beauty to the
slopes; the Heli Link from the slopes of Falls
Creek to the slopes of Hotham for the day.
Then there are the scenic flights. The Bell

high fives from everyone on the slopes. Pete the
Snow Dragon makes guest appearances at the
Falls Creek Snowsports School, clapping and
high fiving the kids as they progress their skills.
During this quiet period, Pete is doing his best
to keep everyone entertained. If you see Pete
on the slopes or in the village, be sure to grab a
photo and give Pete a high-five or big hug. •

That means slow enough to avoid any
mishap - like losing your steering because
your front wheels lock-up when you put
the brakes on - and you slide in to a
ditch (at best).
Get rid of all the snow from your car
- it’s dangerous!
Carry chains (for your drive wheels),
gloves (for your hands), mat (to kneel
on), torch (to see) and knowledge (to
know how and when to fit chains).

Rotary Ski Day
As has been enjoyed for many years,
members of the local Rotary Club of
Mount Beauty have enjoyed a ski day early
in each month of winter. This year, the day
falls on the second Tuesday of the month,
making this coming Tuesday the 12th of
July the first Rotary Ski Day for 2016.
Visiting Rotarians, their family and friends
are welcome to join in for a cruisy couple
of hours skiing (and boarding) followed by
a fine lunch at the Falls Creek Hotel.
The deal is that we all meet at Cloud 9
at 10am. It shouldn’t be too hard to pick
a group of aging rockers (sorry - healthy
young talented souls) maybe even in a one
piece outfit hanging around Cloud 9. Once
joined up we then advise numbers to the
lunch venue and head off for a slide.
Should you be interested, give Ken Bell a
call on 0400 350 488 and he will fill you
in on any further details. It is always a
good day. •

Silverski 215
The third bedroom is on the smaller side
and features a single bunk however there is
excellent natural light in that room. This
centrally located complex also features a large
communal ski room, drying room and boot
room, plus in-house restaurant and bar.
The Silverski complex has a long alpine
head lease until 2045, is in the heart of the
Falls Creek village in a good ski in and ski
out location. Plus the complex offers onsite managers over the winter months.
Two years of detailed financials are available
via request. Over the last two years the unit
has achieved better than a 5% return with
all management, utilities and body corporate
charges taken out. That also includes the
owner having good use in the apartment.
As a year round resort, Falls Creek has lots to
offer during the ‘green’ season. Green season
is that wonderful relaxing time between the
end of winter and the start of next winter.
The village has a fabulous suite of activities for
everyone. Christmas Carols in the community,
The Mile High Dragon Boat Festival, the
Bicycle Network Peaks Challenge, the Rapid
Ascent Mountain Raid and the Easter Festival
are just a few of the events. And then there are
the activities that can be enjoyed alone or with
a few companions. Cycling, walking, camping,
photography, fishing et al. Oh and don’t forget
the 22km of mountain bike single track now
open with more opening next summer.
With all this going for it, this property
is definitely worth investigating. For an
inspection or more information, please call
Christa 0402 277 808. Zirky Real Estate. •
