WWW.SPE.ORG/EVENTS/DC 17–19 March 2015 ExCeL London United Kingdom www.spe.org/events/dc PLATINUM PRODUCER PARTNERS THE PREMIER DRILLING EVENT Conference and Exhibition Programme SPE/IADC DRILLING CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION 2 WWW.SPE.ORG/EVENTS/DC CHAIR’S LETTER On behalf of the programme and advisory committee, I would like to welcome you to the SPE/IADC Drilling Conference and Exhibition in London. The conference sessions cover a variety of subjects including HSE, Deepwater, Subsea, and New Technologies. With only a single plenary session, the programme is optimised around the presentations. The conference also provides an excellent opportunity to meet new colleagues or to catch up with former ones. In particular, the plenary session is designed to capture your views on our industry, its challenges in a low oil-price and rapidly changing world, and how these should be best addressed. I encourage you to actively participate in the open sessions and make your voice heard. The context of the conference is a growing world population with increasing demands for energy, whilst a large portion of this energy still comes from hydrocarbons. The future hydrocarbon energy sources will be even more difficult to explore and develop, while at the same time, the general public is raising expectations toward our industry with respect to social and environmental responsibility. Other industries have faced similar challenges before and provide some great learning opportunities for us. I expect the programme to address these challenges. WWW.SPE.ORG/EVENTS/DC ABOUT SPE AND IADC The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) is a not-for-profit professional association whose members are engaged in energy resources development and production. SPE serves more than 143,000 members in 137 countries worldwide. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry and provides services through its publications, events, training courses, and online resources at www.spe.org. Income from this event will be invested back into SPE to support many other society programmes. When you attend an SPE event, you help provide even more opportunities for industry professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence. Scholarships, certification, the Distinguished Lecturer programme, and SPE’s energy education programme, Energy4me, are just a few examples of programmes that are supported by SPE. IADC is dedicated to enhancing the interests of oil-and-gas and geothermal drilling contractors worldwide. IADC’s contract-drilling members own most of the world’s land and offshore drilling units and drill the vast majority of the wells that produce the planet’s oil and gas. IADC’s membership also includes oil-and-gas producers, and manufacturers and suppliers of oilfield equipment and services. Founded in 1940, IADC’s mission is to improve industry health, safety, and environmental practices; advance drilling and completion technology; and champion responsible standards, practices, legislation, and regulations that provide for safe, efficient, and environmentally sound drilling operations worldwide. IADC holds Accredited Observer status at the International Maritime Organization and the International Seabed Authority, specialised agencies of the United Nations. The Association is a leader in developing standards for industry training, notably its Well Control Accreditation Program (WellCAP)® and rigfloor orientation programme, RIG PASS®. IADC is headquartered in Houston and has offices in Washington D.C., The Netherlands, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as chapters in the UK, Brazil, Australasia, South Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and across the United States. Tuesday, 17 March | 1800–1900 Welcome Reception Join us in the exhibition hall from 1800 to 1900 hours on Tuesday for the welcome reception. Wednesday, 18 March | 1100–1300 Plenary Session: Successfully Delivering Wells in a Changing World The energy world is in for dramatic changes. Even before the drop in oil prices, operators had started to voice their concern with regard to what they had experienced as an escalating cost of oilfield development. A major part of that cost increase is obviously coming from the technological challenges that are associated with trying to get to those not-so-easyto-reach hydrocarbons. These challenges are real and possibly not any easier to solve due to the 16 WWW.SPE.ORG/EVENTS/DC SPECIAL EVENTS dramatic market changes caused by the drop in the oil prices. This challenge may require stakeholders to look at the way they are doing business and how they should adapt and optimise their efforts in a competitive yet co-operative manner. This may well include breaking some barriers in the way we do things today. The session will be held without the formal presentations that have been used in previous sessions. Instead, the panellists will address their points of view in a dialogue with the moderator and amongst themselves in the first half of the session. The last part of the session will open up for questions from the floor in a form that aims at becoming a dynamic and interactive exchange of opinions. Moderator: Eithne Treanor Eithne Treanor is a professional conference moderator and facilitator, an expert media and communications trainer, as well as a seasoned energy industry commentator. Treanor acts as OPEC’s official on-air conference and webcast moderator. WWW.SPE.ORG/EVENTS/DC TRAINING COURSES Monday, 16 March | 0800-1700 Borehole Surveying Awareness Instructor(s): Angus L. Jamieson This course focuses on the methods and tools of borehole surveying, their use and quality, and their impact on well placement, production, and collision risk. Directional drilling challenges are increasing as we aim for more distant targets, thinner reservoirs, and the need to optimise production at a minimum cost. This course helps you understand the issues affecting wellbore placement, the risks to HSE, and the costs of getting it wrong. This training course will be held in Room 1 and 2 of the Capital Lounge. © 2015 National Oilwell Varco | All Rights Reserved 19 SPE/IADC DRILLING CONFERENCE AND EXHIBITION TECHNICAL PROGRAMME (As of 18 February 2015 | Subject to Change) Tuesday | 17 March | 0800–1130 01 Well Operation Planning and Human Factors | Capital Suite, Room 14 This session presents two elements, both vitally important for safety and good management. First, robust well operations planning is essential as new projects are becoming more complex and costly. Presentations on this topic include audit principles applied to well engineering efficiency, an update on probabilistic well time estimates, and well cost estimation and control. Secondly, human behaviour and interactions are increasingly recognised as central to teamwork and decision-making. The human factors session includes the HAZOP process to identify issues in the drilling process, human factors in drilling, and a review of the inflow process and the role it played in the Macondo incident. Meeting these challenges will require advances in technology that are now only under investigation today. This session will include the effect of sea wave heave when maintaining a constant bottomhole pressure (BHP) in MPD; the impact of continuous flow systems (CFS) in the adoption of MPD; the development of an MPD well-control matrix, the model basis and use of a dynamic dual gradient model for training; new developments in MPD automated systems; and finally, a case study illustrating the use of MPD with oil-based mud (OBM) in a difficult scenario such as a highly fractured carbonate below a sensitive laminated shale. These breakthrough technologies are enabling the industry to overcome many of the hazards we currently face.
