Located in Battle Creek, Michigan, GHS produces strings for electric, acoustic and classical guitar, electric bass, banjo, mandolin, ukulele and a wide array of specialty and ethnic instruments. From material selection to such intricate factors as core-to-cover ratio, winding direction, wire tension and alteration of the wire, GHS designs state-of-theart strings that enhance the sound quality of all playing styles and instruments. And with ongoing research, GHS develops string innovations that anticipate music trends and instrument modifications worldwide. To build a quality product, state-of-the-art equipment is a necessity. At GHS, all strings are made on machinery designed and built in-house. GHS design engineers utilize the latest technologies to develop computer controlled string winding machines that monitor the most intricate parameters. Modern quality control methods ensure that the final product meets GHS’s rigid standards and specifications. GHS’s facilities are environmentally regulated to control temperature and humidity. Sensitive raw materials are wrapped in protective bags and coiled strings are put in special string packets that, in independent laboratory tests, have proven to offer optimum protection. The following will explain basic string design features and the sound and feel they produce. How does Winding Technique affect Tone? There are four types of winding techniques used for strings. The type providing the brightest tone (all else being equal) is the roundwound string. It is made with round cover wire wrapped around the core. Burnished strings are considered roundwound. Next brightest is the rollerwound string. The round cover wire is crushed to a semi-flat configuration as it is wound around the core. Our Pressurewounds are an example of a rollerwound string. Next, and “mid-bright,” is the groundwound type of string. This string starts as a roundwound; then it is ground by a centerless grinder which removes almost half of the round cover wire, leaving a smooth-feeling surface. Our Brite Flats are a groundwound string. Finally, the flatwound string produces the darkest, or mellowest, tone. This string is made by winding a flat, or “ribbon,” wire around the core. The string is then ground. It is the smoothest feeling type of string. Roundwound Rollerwound Groundwound Flatwound Which Bass Strings will fit my Instrument? ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL! Bass string lengths vary because of their heavy diameters. Strings can’t just be cut to length without harm. They CAN be carefully cut on the “silk” area for minor shortening. Heavier gauge strings are especially critical as they may break at the tuning post if the thick winding is wrapped too far around the post. GHS makes five different lengths to fit most basses. “Winding length” is the distance from ball end to the “silk,” whereas the “scale” of the bass is the distance from the saddle to the nut. The hardness of common materials used in the cover wire of strings affects both the tone and “feel” of a string. Usually, with all else remaining constant, the harder the material the brighter the string. This explains why stainless steel produces a very bright sound and nickel, a softer material, produces a warmer sound. However, a hard material can be abrasive to both fingers and frets. At GHS, our magnetically active filament grade Alloy 52™ - used in Progressives and other strings - is softer and less abrasive than stainless steel but produces a tone almost as bright. Common cover wire materials include (ranked by order of brightness): stainless steel, Alloy 52™, nickel plated steel, pure nickel, and for acoustics: brass and bronze. The core wire for all strings and all plain steel strings (both acoustic and electric) are made from tin plated Swedish steel. What is String Geometry, and how does it affect String Tone? String Geometry refers to the ratio of the core wire diameter to the cover wire diameter. These two parameters can be varied to come up with the same final string gauge.
