As well as the updated information on the opening times of all offices, prices for accommodation and catering information, you will also find information on the available camping materials for rental and some new activities. Of course the established activities such as Snow and Ice, Weekly Summer Programme, Crafts, Hikes, and many Trips are all still here and are in some cases, improved or only slightly changed. For 85 years(!), young people and their leaders have come here to experience the high alpine environment (on skis or by foot), to try something new, to make friends and to broaden their horizons. Kandersteg International Scout Centre is the dream of Lord Baden Powell and welcomes around 11,000 Scouts and Guides each year. KISC, a World Scout Centre, invites you to come and enjoy a unique and International Scouting Experience as part of 85 year old dream! We challenge you to find your magic! The magic that is in the mountains, the friendships created whilst discovering cultural differences and the opportunity to live life to the full. It is found in a campfire with 800 Scouts gathered around, in the hike to climb your first peak and in the introduction to world-wide Scouting. Most of all, the magic is deep inside each person, special to them, not touched by others, created by experiences shared and enjoyed. Young people come here and leave enriched by this special atmosphere, by challenges met and friendships forged. These themes bring our guests together and encourage them to live, learn and ultimately try to make the world a better place. So, come and ... Live Your Dream! Most rooms are equipped with tables and chairs, providing a living area for you, as well as some storage space for your equipment. In the Old Chalet each bed has blankets and a pillow, but you will need to bring a bed sheet or sleeping bag (or you can hire sheets from us for SFr. 3.– per stay). Rooms in the New Chalet are of a higher standard, with single beds and full bedding. There’s an emphasis on living together with other groups and we ask our guests to help us with some of the cleaning duties. The Chalet’s facilities include several meeting and common rooms, central heating, modern sanitary facilities with constant hot water, souvenir shop, postal service, public telephones, coffee bar, a laundry and an internet café. The Campsite The Campsite can accommodate up to 1200 people on more than 50 different sites. While being close to other groups, each group should have their own campsite. During high season groups may be asked to share campsites. Some campsite equipment is also available such as firewood, pioneering poles, gas, tents, cooking sets, stoves, tables and benches. If you require tents, cooking sets, stoves or tables and benches, please book them in advance to ensure availability. All sites have running water nearby and there are toilet and shower blocks with hot water in several areas of the Campsite, which all groups help to look after during their stay. Campsite Cooking Set Campsite cooking set includes basic food preparation items for roughly 10 people. It includes, for example, a stove, pots, pan, kitchen knives, washing up bowl, water carrying canister, chopping board, etc. Personal cutlery and crockery (plates, cups, knives, forks, spoons) and gas are not included. In case of cancellation up to three months before the date of arrival, half of the booking fee will be reimbursed. In the event of cancellation after this point, the booking fee will be forfeited in full to the Centre. Scouts and Guides will be given priority on bookings during our high season, which runs from December 15th to January 10th, the month of February, two weeks over Easter and from July 1st to August 20th. Non-Scout groups of more than 20 people will receive the Scout price in the Chalet or on the Campsite. Insurance Please remember that the Alps, and mountain activities, can be dangerous. It is therefore your responsibility to ensure that you and your group are fully prepared for all the activities that you intend to undertake, both in terms of fitness and equipment. The Centre’s insurance does not cover you or your group against accidents that may occur during your stay. Please check your insurance policy carefully and make sure that it covers all rescue and medical costs. It is essential that you have full insurance cover. If you prefer, we can arrange insurance, additional to your own cover, to make sure you are fully insured for adventurous activities. Contact us before arriving in Kandersteg to arrange this. This can be based on the many activities we offer during the main Winter and Summer seasons. These activities may also be available at other times of the year, depending upon conditions and the availability of Staff. In any case, we can offer advice on most activities in and around Kandersteg. As well as our Centre programme, we have information on attractions, special deals, unguided activities and coach excursions. Whether you want to come alone or as part of a group, if you want a full programme or just a little advice, we are here to help. You will receive a programme request form and advice on how to timetable your activities once your reservation is confirmed. Please look at our website for further valuable information. practical programme information Note: Our Summer activities (including the Weekly Summer Programme, hikes and climbing) are generally available from June 23rd until September 7th. Activities may be available before and after this time, please check with the Programme Office for availability. Advance Bookings Summer Activity Bookings open on February 1st. Once you have paid your booking fee, you will receive a programme request form. Please complete this form and send it to us after February 1st. If you do not book in advance, you may arrive and be unable to complete your planned programme. Our activities are booked on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so please start making your reservations as soon as you receive your programme request form. Don’t be disappointed!! We suggest that you have your programme request to us by June 1st for a quick response before arrival. After checking in at Reception, please come to the Programme Office to finalise your activities and bookings. For your convenience, all activities can be billed directly to your final account. Equipment Please look at our equipment lists on pages 23 and 65. For the activities that we run you must have the listed equipment. If you do not have the correct equipment you will be unable to take part in our activities. Non-Guests Our programme activities are heavily subsidised by overnight fees. Non-guests are welcome to arrange programme and equipment bookings in advance. A surcharge of 10% or a minimum SFr. 1.– per item is added to cover costs. Kandersteg International Scout Centre 11 Themes Our programme is based on the three themes of International Friendship, High Adventure and Eco Adventure. We have awards based on these themes as well as several other awards. For more information on these awards, look in the Awards and Badges section. These themes are a great way to get ideas and to help plan your programme. Building Your Programme Which ever time of year you are coming to Kandersteg it is important to organise the right programme for you or your group to ensure they get the most out of the experience. We encourage groups to base their programme around our three themes of International Friendship, High Adventure and Eco Adventure as well as including some Scouting and service elements to create a balanced programme experience. Use the guideline below to help build the right programme. Depending on the length of your stay try and include as many activities as possible from the following suggestions. Practical Programme Information Activity Cancellation Charges During the year we have lots of groups wishing to do activities and, once an activity is booked, we have to turn other Scouts away from it. Occasionally, groups do not let us know of changes or cancellations – leaving empty spaces and disappointed Scouts. To help all our guests get the most from their stay, we charge a fee of SFr. 5.– per person for an activity or half the total price of a workshop for any cancellation which does not give us 48 hours notice. This applies to all Centre activities advertised in KanderActive including those which are free of charge. There is no charge if a person is sick or injured. If the activity is not run by the Centre (e.g. river rafting, paragliding or mountain biking) then you may have to pay the full price if you cancel too late, this is normal Swiss practice. Please plan a realistic programme. Remember the altitude and fitness requirements; avoid over-tiredness and stress. The Programme Office is very happy to help you with this. Thank you for your help in providing as many opportunities as possible for our guests. ◆ An Alpine Hike or Winter Activity ◆ An Award ◆ A Trail or local Activity ◆ A Sightseeing Trip ◆ Climbing, Snow & Ice or Skiing/Snowboarding ◆ A stay in a Mountain Hut ◆ A Craft Activity ◆ At least one Weekly Summer Programme Activity or Evening Activity ◆ A Service Project kanderactive winter 12 13 Trails and exploration / Day Trips Taxi und Carreisen, CH-3715 Adelboden Welcome to Bergmann-Coach’s Company!
