THE AVERY COONLEY SCHOOL’S
33RD ANNUAL AUCTION
APRIL 25, 2015
1 Class Memory Books
Welcome
This year’s auction is a celebration of the past,
present, and future of The Avery Coonley School.
Our Founder, Queene Ferry Coonley, began her first
school over a century ago, born of a “simple wish” that
her daughter would receive the very best
education possible. We are the beneficiaries of
her incredible initiative and foresight.
Let us celebrate Mrs. Coonley’s educational vision,
her philanthropic spirit, and the remarkable legacy of
that long-ago wish, for it is truly one that we all share.

began her first school in a cottage on the
Coonley Estate in Riverside, Illinois.
The present school facility was built in 1929.
It received listing on the National Register
of Historic Places in 2007.
Reflecting the belief that education is a
lifelong process, the school seeks to instill a
sense of joy and excitement about learning
at an early age. Hallmarks of an Avery Coonley
School education include small class size, an
wide spectrum of learning opportunities.
The challenging curriculum is designed to
foster critical and creative thinking, selfreliance, and concern for others.

Welcome
Dear Friends of The Avery Coonley School,
With great pleasure, we welcome you to the 33rd Annual Avery Coonley
School Auction. Tonight’s theme, A Simple Wish... Continuing the
Legacy, celebrates the rich history of our past, the vibrancy of our
school today, and our commitment to provide our students the very
best education possible.
This evening is made possible because of talented volunteers who
give selflessly of their time, generous donors who share their resources,
and you, our guests, who make this event the success it always is.
Working and giving together, we are continuing the legacy of Queene
Ferry Coonley to support our students as they become positive,
productive, and respectful members of society. Very special recognition
is shared with Auction Chairs, Tracy Blackburn and Brendan Sheehy, for
their leadership in assembling and directing a dynamic committee.
Thank you, our very special guests, for supporting The Avery Coonley
School through your presence here tonight. Our simple wish for you is
to have a wonderful time at our school this evening.
With appreciation and best wishes,
Paul Druzinsky
Patrick Fry
Head of School
Chair, Board of Trustees

Welcome to A Simple Wish!
Tonight we honor our school’s past, celebrate our present, and look to
the future with a theme inspired by the words of Queene Ferry Coonley
who described her “simple wish” to build a place where children gifted
with the spirit of exploration and inquiry could grow. We gather to
share in the community that she began and that we, as stewards of the
school, continue to cultivate for our children.
We wish to extend a very special thank you to the faculty of The Avery
Coonley School. Each school day they make Mrs. Coonley’s simple wish
a reality as they open our children’s minds to a world of learning that
will serve them their entire lives. We thank the staff, especially the Office
of Development, for their tireless efforts in making tonight a success.
It has been our honor to work on the Auction with such a truly talented
and dedicated committee of volunteers. Giving their time, talent
and energy to perfect tonight’s festivities, they embody the spirit of
Mrs. Coonley and provide a strong example of the commitment we all
feel toward our School. We give you our most heartfelt thanks.
Without the philanthropic support of our donors, this event would
not be possible. We wish to recognize the generosity of our parents,
grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends and the business community
for each and every donation. Thank you all for your support.
The night is here. The moment is now. There are many opportunities
to participate. We encourage you all to bid high and bid often.
All proceeds from this evening provide direct support to ACS and
our children’s education!
Thank you for making wishes come true for our students and our School.

Fund-A-Need
RENOVATION OF THE LEARNING SPACES
Each year we ask our Auction guests to “raise their paddles” to make a
charitable contribution to a worthy philanthropic project. These projects,
which have included the restoration of the outdoor classroom, playground
equipment and, last year, the renovation of the Mochel Commons,
benefit the student body. Since its inception, Fund-A-Need has raised
$540,000 that has directly enhanced the educational and co-curricular
experiences of our students.
This year’s project is the rebuilding of the Third Group learning spaces.
Since their construction in 1970, the learning spaces have been an iconic
part of The Avery Coonley School campus. Their innovative design and
unique look even led to a spread in Life Magazine. Over one thousand
ACS students have taken advantage of these wonderful spaces to gain
an increased sense of independence and responsibility.
The learning spaces hold a special place in the memories of our students
and alumni, and we are excited that they will continue to be an integral
part of the ACS experience. Because they are now 45 years old, the
spaces need to be rebuilt in order to ensure that they remain fully functional
and safe, both now and for years to come. The newly constructed spaces
will follow the original design and will again have a unique honeycomb
arrangement.
Whether your child has already enjoyed the learning spaces or is still
looking forward to the experience, we ask for your support of this unique
and very special part of The Avery Coonley School. Any funds raised
above the project’s need will be directed to the School’s capital budget.
Thank you!

as is. No exchanges or refunds will be made.
By his/her purchase, the buyer waives any claims for liability against the school. The
school is not responsible for any personal injuries or damages that may result from the

The school reserves the right to withdraw any item at any time before actual sale. The
school reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. With the exception of the Live

note, and abide by, any expiration dates, restrictions, or special instructions on each

Live Auction Rules
The Live Auction will begin at approximately 9:00 p.m. and will continue until
all items have been sold.
• All items in the Live Auction are numbered and the Auction will proceed by
item number.
• Your registration folder contains your paddle number. This is your personal
identification number for bidding.
• To enter a bid, the bidder should signal the auctioneer by raising his or her

item in dispute.
• Winning bidders will be asked to sign a confirmation for any Live Auction items purchased.
• To avoid disappointment, and as a courtesy to donors, winning bidders should con-
tact the donors of dinners, hotel packages, and all other services as soon as possible after the Auction to make necessary arrangements. In some cases, the donors of items have determined a “reserve by date” that must be followed. Please abide by any item restrictions, including available or reserved dates, as required by the donor. If no restrictions are provided, all services must be used within one year of the
Auction (April 25, 2016).
• Auction donors are extremely generous. Please do not request changes to the items offered. Any questions about the item should be directed to the ACS Office
of Development.
Rules Regarding Vacation Properties
Donors of vacation properties are sharing a very special possession with the Auction.
All successful bidders of these properties are asked to treat these places with exceptional care and respect.

• Many donors have asked that arrangements be made through the Office of Develop-
ment. If so, this will be indicated on the bearer letter.
• Purchasers of properties may be asked to provide a refundable security deposit and to sign an indemnification form and/or a use agreement with the donor. A nominal cleaning charge may also be required.
• All properties are non-smoking and no pets are allowed.
• There may be other specific restrictions that will be presented on the bearer letter to the winning bidder.

Rules and Information
verification form is required prior to receiving a certificate. All purchasers will receive
a receipt of purchases the week following the Auction.
Tax Deductibility of Purchases
The Internal Revenue Code requires the Avery Coonley School to inform Auction
patrons of the tax deductibility of their Auction contributions. With respect to any
contribution to the Avery Coonley School or any purchase made, if Auction patrons receive goods or services, the contribution is deductible for federal income tax purposes
only to the extent that its value exceeds the fair market value of the goods or services
received.
For purposes of determining the tax deductibility for the purchase of Auction items,
the following is advised:
• Dollar values listed in this catalog and its addendum are as stated by the donor or are the Auction committee’s good faith estimate of each item’s fair market value.
• If there is no stated dollar value to an item, the post-auction statement from the school will include the school’s good faith estimate of value of any item for which the school is able to make such an estimate. If no good faith estimate of value can
reasonably be made for an item, its fair market value is the price at which it is sold.
The cost of raffle tickets is not tax deductible. Raffle prizes that are (a) $600 or more
and (b) at least 300 times the amount of the wager are considered taxable income.
The school is required to file a W2G tax form. Forms will be distributed to raffle
winners for whom tax reporting is required on Auction night. Completion of the form
is required before the prizes can be released to the winner.
A tax advisor should be consulted for further explanation or advice as to the tax
deductibility of contributions to the Avery Coonley School.
