Becoming Your 21st Century Library
Library Matters Janesville’s Hedberg Public Library Winter 2016 Becoming Your 21st Century Library NEW! Exciting things are happening at HPL! After another great year of programs and services, we are about to embark on a journey of re-envisioning our library. Movie Night @ HPL Over the years, our community has begun to use us differently. More people are coming to the library to meet with others, study as a group, attend programs, participate in activities, etc. Our study rooms are well-used, our Program Room is fully booked, and our Public Meeting Room is a very popular place. In fact, someone recently commented that they love to meet at the library, but it’s hard to do so because we’re always booked! It’s clear that we need to provide more collaborative spaces to accommodate the community’s growing needs. A reconfiguration of our floorplan and an update of our infrastructure is the first step. Proposed changes include: All screenings are FREE for all ages.* No registration necessary. *Please note ratings for each film. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Wednesday, December 16 6 p.m. • A consolidated and centralized service desk. • Increased reading, study and meeting spaces. • An expanded teen area. • Updated technology and better wireless connectivity. • More efficient interior fixtures (lighting, carpeting, and additional furniture). Rated PG13 Running Time: 97 min. All of these changes help us become the OPN Architechts rendering 21st Century Library that our community of proposed floorplan requires. They also happen to be changes occuring in libraries across the nation. Last October, the Aspen Institute released their report Rising to the Challenge: Re-Envisioning Public Libraries, based on what they believe libraries need to do to meet the needs of their communities. The emerging value proposition of the public library is built around three key assets – people, place and platform. Clue Labyrinth Wednesday, January 20 6 p.m. Rated PG Running Time: 101 min. People: the public library is a hub of civic engagement, fostering new relationships and strengthening the human capital of the community. Place: the public library is a welcoming space for a wide range of purposes—reading, communicating, learning, playing, meeting and getting business done. Platform: the public library is user-centered; it enables the curation and sharing of the community’s knowledge and innovation. Not only are we putting this report to good use, so is the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). They are funding innovative projects and creating communication platforms that are much better for networking. And the American Library Association has created a new campaign entitled Libraries Transform. We believe their tag line, Transformation is Essential to the Communities We Serve” beautifully supports our desire to move forward with our vision. We know we have a wonderful building - and we’re very lucky it has sustained us these last twenty years. It’s working just fine. But here’s the bottom line: fine isn’t good enough. We can do better. And the community needs us to be serving them at our highest capacity for another twenty years - and beyond. We can make that happen. Over the coming year, you’ll hear more about our plans. We hope that you’ll support our vision - and even become involved in creating your 21st Century Library. We can’t wait to get started. Visit our website for more images, updates and FAQs! Have a safe and happy holiday season! Plus, check out the full Aspen Institute Report from October 2014. Bryan J.
