Winter Program Guide Strong Libraries ■ Strong Communities February 22 to 28. Monica Finn, Customer Services Librarian Cowichan | Chemainus Branches Every year, libraries, schools and community groups across the country celebrate freedom of expression by organizing or participating in Freedom to Read Week festivities. F reedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Schools and libraries are regularly asked to remove books and magazines from their shelves. Free expression on the Internet is in question. Few of these stories make headlines but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read. F reedom to Read Week provides an opportunity for Canadians to focus on issues of intellectual freedom as they affect our community, our province, our country and countries around the world. Vancouver Island Regional Library supports the Canadian Library Association’s Position Statement on Intellectual Freedom: All persons in Canada have the fundamental right, as embodied in the nation’s Bill of Rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, to have access to all expressions of knowledge, creativity and intellectual activity, and to express their thoughts publicly. This right to intellectual freedom, under the law, is essential to the health and development of Canadian society. L ibraries have a basic responsibility for the development and maintenance of intellectual freedom. It is the responsibility of libraries to guarantee and facilitate access to all expressions of knowledge and intellectual activity, including those which some elements of society may consider to be unconventional, unpopular or unacceptable. To this end, libraries shall acquire and make available the widest variety of materials.
