Greetings Cruisers,
April was a good month for the Cruising and
Voyaging Society. We started the month with an
April 2nd Cruising and Voyaging meeting when
we presented a Video “Trans-Pac: 100 years of
crossing the Pacific”. The video was produced
by Roy Disney, and on loan from Carl Garringer.
Everyone enjoyed watching this Trans-Pac
history lesson via the video.
Our regular meeting was a chance to set our
Anniversary Dinner Plans and conduct some
other regular business.
Our Sunday brunch held April 21st yielded full
tables and an excited group ordering shirts and
placing orders for the anniversary party the
following Sunday. We saw the return of many of
our traveling members including Jeff and Patti
Naus, Dave and Leslie Moore, Bill Beadle and
Barbara Dove, and many of the most wonderful
friends were there.
Our annual HYC Cruising and Voyaging Society
Anniversary Party held on Sunday 28th was a
wonderful event and we all had a great time.
The highest award went to HYC member Steve
Dixon, of the S/V “Lanakila” named as the “2012
Cruiser of the Year” for his sustained participation
in the Cruising and Voyaging events. Steve Dixon
has been a regular HYC cruiser for many years,
has authored a book on cruising titled “The
Hawaiian Voyages of the Ono Jimmy” (Hawaii
Trade-Winds Publishing Co. 1998) and regularly
joins the meetings even after racing from the
airport arrival or driving halfway around the
island just to join us for brunch. Steve big monthlong cruise around Oahu last summer was most
inspirational for many of us and a great example
of the “cruisers spirit”. He is a knowledgeable
skipper and his “Commodorable”, wife Lila have
made many safe passages together.
The first “Voyager of the Year 2012” was given to
Jeff Naus for his combined cruise-race to Tahiti
and back this past summer. Earlier this Year Jeff
was awarded the Doc and Dotti Tanner Award.
Jeff and several of our other regular cruisers
namely Leslie Moore, Bill Beadle, Patti Naus, “a
couple of guys named Mark” and Skip Riley we
all blest to have made at least part of the journey
aboard his trusty vessel, “Moon Shadow”. In no
small part he was assisted by Dave Cooper, for
many hours of work preparing the vessel, who
was also the communication director. Well done
to Jeff and his crew.
Our next cruise is set for this Memorial Day
Weekend which was planned to be a circle
island. Although restrictions at the Sand Bar
in Kaneohe may cause plans to change. Please
attend the next meeting on the first Tuesday,
May 7th at 6:30 p.m. where we will discuss in
more detail.
Have a great month at club and we will see you
at the club bar and restaurant.

Aloha Sailors,
After the Kokohead Race there was a lull in racing. Then,
in a two week time span, we held two of our most popular
races, first was Rabbit Island on March 30th. The winds were
a constant 15 but some were apprehensive about rounding
Rabbit Island because of high surf on the North Shore. After
checking the swell, I decided we would go around the island.
It was the right decision and the racers came back happy.
A mean current off Diamond Head made for a whole new
race back. Boats going inside moved, those staying outside
caught the current.
Without my usual crew for Rabbit Island a few problems arose
which were quickly resolved in a Redress Hearing and we
went on to give out the awards.
The results were:
as our committee boat at the start with Monte Opperman, Sue
and Ron Pestel helped as well. I drove to Ko’Olina after the
start while Kawika Warren and John Loo brought the Whaler
around. We got there in time to get the inflatable up then got
the first call for boats rounding Barber’s Point. It was a mad
race to the finish line with us throwing out the inflatable and
getting on station just as the X class came flying across.
Sunday’s start was off Electric Beach and once again, Kawika
and John took the Whaler back and I drove. I got back about
25 minutes before the first boat came in.
Although two boats retired after finishing when they realized
they had entered the restricted zone it showed their true
Corinthian spirit.
For post party, Ron Uryga shared his rib recipe with Antije
Gruenwald who cooked ribs while Ron raced. The feast
afterward was great and with Dan and Rita helping both with
the finish and in the galley we had an extremely successful
party.
The Pokai results were:
I want to thank my committee, husband John, Ron Pestel
and Mark Olsen as a committee boat. The Galley made pizza
which was delivered by my son Erik, Linda West and Ailana
Warren.
Next up was Spring Pokai /Ko’Olina Race. This year Kaneohe
Yacht Club decided to join us for the race back from Pokai,
unfortunately the winds did not cooperate and while the
townside racers headed for Pokai the KYC races stalled out
by Kokohead and powered in to spend the night at the Aloha
Dock.
Lipton Cup Challenge is our next major event. Let’s all cheer
Team Ikaika on. We want to keep the Lipton Cup in HYC’s
trophy case. Volunteers are always welcome, just give me a
call.
This race had Dan and Rita back and we used Hoochi Mama

Update from Transpac Honolulu
By Public Relations Chair, Honolulu Transpac PR, Janet M. Scheffer
Transpac headquarters announced this week that they are on course for a great race this year with
a fantastic amount of entries to date. The most recent deadline was March 2, 2013 for the “Standard
Deadline”, and, as of that date, 61 boats had entered in the 47th Transpac Race from Long Beach
to Hawaii with its first start on July 8, 2013. As of April 15, 2013, Transpac has received four entries
from Hawaii-based boats, Pyewacket, Kahuna, Casch Mer and Grand Illusion. Of course, our very own
James McDowell, skipper of Grand Illusion, was the winner in the last Honolulu Race (2011) of the King
Kalakaua Trophy Awarded to the First Corrected Overall yacht, he shares part of his story with us in a
candid interview with our committee member Linell Kam below. Beginning on July 8, 2013, over 61 boats
will crossover the start line off Pt. Fermin in San Pedro for the beginning of the 47th Transpacific Yacht
Race. Hundreds of sailors from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, California, Mexico, Chicago,
Japan, San Francisco, and many other ports will head across the Pacific Ocean in this historic yacht race.
Sending them off from our Mainland Base around Rainbow Harbor in Long Beach will be a dedicated

A Conversation with Grand Illusion Skipper
James McDowell
By Linell Kam, Transpa Honolulu Transpac PR
Patrick O’Brian, navigator for Grand Illusion has been James’ mentor for over 20 years, sailing with
him since 1995, first at working the bow, then in ’97, the boat manager, and in ’99 he became James’
navigator. James does whatever Patrick says, and it works. In discussing the navigator role, James was
very candid in his conversation with me. “ It’s Transpac; a complicated race, because you don’t just go
straight…you need to find the fastest route around the high pressure system…Patrick gathers information
from all kinds of sources, before the race about the wind, and then his personal knowledge and taps
into his instinct…there are 3 parts to the race course…the 1st part, you are in the “trades” of California
northwest to easterly….and then there’s the “bend” where you make this big right turn and in that turn,
the wind gets very light, no trades in the bight….once in the trades you cannot jibe…once you enter,
you’re committed…2nd part in the trades, you look for opportunities to get south and how far do you go
to get there?...you need to stay north to go as fast as you can to the trades then you dive south….3rd part
is once you are in the trades, you’re playing a cat-n-mouse game with the squalls…you always have to be
in front of the squalls, because there are 10+ kts. in front of you and nothing behind it….you’re looking for
dark patches and try to get in front them always..if you get in front, you need to know the angle, and when
you’re on the edge, because you could slip back and be in it or behind it…then you need to get in front of
it again…and that’s what Patrick does…he keeps us in front of squalls…one day it could be 12-15 knots,
consistent and mellow…then the next day, you’re on fire…!! Sailing Transpac AND being successful is
“FANTASTIC”, and it his one most important things in my life: to sail successfully in Transpac….
