Lake Oswego Adult Community Center
June 2013 + 0 Living 5 Lake Oswego Adult Community Center Change in Medicare Medical Equipment This summer changes to how people get certain medical equipment will go into effect. These changes only apply to people with original Medicare (not Medicare Advantage Plus plans) who buy or rent certain medical items such as oxygen equipment, standard wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, or diabetic supplies. Beginning July 2013, original Medicare recipients will need to rent or purchase equipment from an approved supplier. These suppliers are pre-approved by Medicare. To find an approved supplier, contact 1-800-MEDICARE or go to the website at www.medicare.gov. Prefer to meet with a State Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) representative? The ACC can make an appointment for you by calling us at 503-635-3758. You will meet one-on-one with a SHIBA volunteer in a confidential setting at the Center. The SHIBA volunteer will help you locate an approved supplier. Examples of equipment involved: Did you know that the ACC has free loans on certain types of medical equipment? This includes wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, and more! • Oxygen, oxygen equipment and supplies • Hospital beds and related accessories • Walkers and related accessories • Standard wheelchairs (power and manual), scooters and accessories • Enteral nutrients, equipment and supplies • CPAP and respiratory assist devices and related supplies It’s All in the Word Is 'Elderly' no longer an acceptable word for older people? Give the ACC a call at 503-635-3758 and let us help you. Membership & Participation While membership is not required to participate in most programs, Adult Community Center members do receive priority registration, discounted fees and complimentary event tickets. Memberships for residents of Lake Oswego are: $40 single or $55 per couple per year. For non-residents, the cost is $50 single or $75 per couple per year. For more information, please call 503-635-3758. Memorial for Rose Ann Freeman A celebration of the life of Rose Ann Freeman, registrar at the Adult Community Center for 14 years, will be held on July 18 at 3 p.m. at the ACC. This date marks the six-month anniversary of her death, and a time for all the people who cared for her to share reminiscences and thoughts. There will be a dedication of the new bench, plaque and rose garden in her honor. Light refreshments will be served. Please call the Center at 503-635-3758 if you plan to attend. Words to describe elderly people such as “codger”, “fogey” and even “elderly” should be banned from media reporting, ageism campaigners are urging. Do terms like this matter when referring to a person’s age? According to a media relations guide written by the think tank International Longevity Center, words like “elderly,” “senior,” “fossil,” and “biddy” should be avoided in journalism in favor of terms that do not discriminate against people of a certain age. They suggest people aged over 50 should be referred to as “older people” or simply “man” or “woman” followed by their age. This also means “Old ladies” of both the “little” and “sweet” variety should be studiously avoided. The authors of the report state that 80% of older Americans have been subjected to ageist stereotypes. "While names and characterizations may vary, the message is the same: older men and women are incompetent and lack sufficiency," the guide states. "After all, we don't refer to people under 50 as 'junior citizens.'” In a preface to the report, Robert Butler, president of the International Longevity Center, described the guide as "an important step in overcoming ageist language and beliefs."
