Store #2 – Kentwood, rang through the single largest CAP/Team sale in company history! The outside sales rep for MC, Ross Maroe, began working with Forest Hills Youth Football League in late May of this year on an order for jerseys for all their players. We priced them fairly, didn’t give anything away. There are a number of “team dealers” with sales reps in this Grand Rapids market to compete with – and we won. On Friday, August 22nd the full order was rung through the register. In spite of the fact that the order was already complete, Ross went the extra mile to provide the “First in Class” service that puts MC in a great position to grow more with this group. Over $43,000 worth of jerseys were sorted and boxed by league and team. Product Knowledge July Customer Compliments Serving Our Communities September Birthdays & Anniversaries So what should you take away from this? 1. We need take a back seat to no one – we’ve got team dealers and the two “D” big box competitors here. Our price was fair, our service was Excellent, and our product was competitive quality. 2. No matter what you’ve thought before – we CAN compete! 3. Price – Service – Quality ………pick two, no one can have all three. If you have the best price, you’re not going to have the best quality. If you have the best quality, you’re not going to have the best price. Customers really know this but need to be reminded. 4. The difference is “Service”. Particularly dealing with volunteer run organizations where their time is at a premium – Ross did as much hand holding and did as much of the work as he could for this league. This “service” allowed the league officials to spend their time with their players and not doing administrative tasks. Congratulations to Brooke Hall, Store Manager—Store #172, the ENTIRE STAFF, and Chaz Stangle, District Manager on this news coming out of the LaCrosse Tribune on August 18, 2014! “The La Crosse Area Convention & Vistors Bureau and Explore La Crosse are pleased to announce the winners of the first annual “Best of La Crosse County”. In an effort to seek out and celebrate the very best that La Crosse County has to offer in over 100 categories in art, music, dining, and shopping, nearly 5,000 visitors and residents nominated and voted for hundreds of their favorite businesses and individuals from every corner of the county.” Sporting Goods Store: 1. Kids back in school and less daylight mean people have more time indoors and more time for indoor exercise. In September our fitness equipment sales increase more than 50% over August! Other teams will be available by special order. (Victory Tailgate is currently working on licensing with the Michigan Wolverines and Notre Dame. Those will not be available until that is finalized.) Did you realize that August and September account for 23% of our annual Golf Department sales? The main reasons for strong sales are: Great weather (cooler then July, low precipitation, etc.) Leagues are ending Manufacturers are relaxing their price policies The 2 factors that we have control over are leagues finishing their seasons and the MAP (minimum advertised price) changes by the manufacturers. This is a great time of the year to highlight and sell golf accessories (balls, gloves, tees, etc.). Customers are coming in and buying door prizes for their leagues and we need to make sure they know we have the product. Other than golf balls, this category is all high margin items and make MC Sports profitable. MAP changes have been taken by most vendors, now is the time to make a push and sell those high priced drivers. That TaylorMade/Callaway driver that was $299.99 in the spring is now $249.99 or $199.99 and the customers know this and are ready to buy. Please take a moment and make sure your stores are current on markdowns and that sale and MIS pricing is current. Thanks for all your efforts and happy selling! Company Confidential Page 4 The late summer, early fall fishing season is here. That means SALMON and STEELHEAD to the Great Lakes fishery. It is the time of year many fisherman live for. Whether you are in a boat, on a pier, wading in the river, or standing on a bank, salmon and steelhead can be had by all. Gotta Have It: Traverse Bay Tackle Steelie Rod Rigging up some spinning rods for a steelhead trip, I had to smile when I picked up a 10-footer made by Traverse Bay Tackle. Nestled with rods that cost 10 to 15 times as much, this $35 beauty was a real daisy among the orchids. The Traverse Bay Steelie rod is designed for 4- to 8-pound line, and I usually use it with 6-pound. Traverse Bay Tackle is the house brand for MC Sports, and though this rod isn't in all of their stores, it's well worth searching for or grabbing if you see it in another fishing store. I use it mostly to float fish for steelhead, but it's also a great tool for reaching across weed beds to lower a lure into a hole for panfish and wading streams for trout. Written by Eric Sharp Detroit Free Press Outdoors Writer Traverse Bay Tackle noodle rods, trolling rods, and dipsy rods are great for the fall big fish runs. In August, September, October, and November, the Great Lakes fishermen are either salmon or steelhead fishing on the big lakes or in the rivers. MC Sports has Traverse Bay Tackle fishing rods at a great price. Mace brand pepper spray formulas contain Oleoresin Capsicum ( OC Pepper ) a natural ingredient derived from hot peppers. Game Cameras Arm yourself with knowledge so that you can be comfortable and confident in helping your customer to find the game camera that will best suit their needs. Techniques to sell game cameras: Spend some time reading the packaging on the models we carry so that you are familiar with the features that each offer. If you are comfortable in discussing the different options, your customer will be more confident that you will be able to steer them in the right direction. As with most things, it’s important to first qualify the customer, by asking lots of open-ended questions. Engage them in conversation. This will help you determine what your customer's expectations or needs are. Always show the customer the camera at the upper end of those that will best suit them first. It is easier to step down to a less expensive model if needed, instead of trying to move them into a more expensive unit if you start at the bottom end. Features & benefits to help a customer decide which camera to purchase: Trigger speed is important to many customers. Unfortunately, not all cameras list this on the packaging. A camera with a faster trigger speed will snap the photo sooner, and lessen the chance that you will miss that perfect photo. Flash ranges can vary greatly from one model to the next. A unit with a longer flash range will help ensure that you can capture great photos further out at night. I.R. Sensor range is also important, and is not always the same as the flash range. With a camera that has a shorter I.R. Sensor range, the game will have to come in closer to activate the camera. Of course the megapixel rating of game cameras vary greatly, and the numbers keep climbing higher and higher. In my humble opinion, any of the cameras that we currently sell will take a nice clear photo. The only real benefit to purchasing a camera with a very high megapixel rating is if the customer is going to want to zoom in on the photo to see very fine or small detail. Complete Sale items: Don't forget to sell your customer 2 SD cards. They will need one to put in the camera to start with, and a fresh one to insert when they come back later to retrieve the first. Batteries are also a "must have." Be sure to provide T.O.C.S. by explaining the benefits of protecting their investment with a Worry Free Protection Plan! Tips for merchandising: Don't be afraid to give your game cameras the "Prime Real estate" they deserve. This is the hot item for the season. Remember to vertically stripe them with the highest end models leading and them flow into the least expensive, and finally clearance. Be sure to have the Complete Sale items listed above merchandise alongside. These merchandising tips will help you to keep the assortment visually appealing and easy to shop so your customer has time to shop for other items as well. We got 2 very nice kayaks and a Yakima rack for our SUV. We also purchased paddles, vests, a device to pull the kayaks to the water, and more. Mike did a tremendous job. I've been in retail for over 30 years. I think that Mike's expertise was great. Due to his knowledge, we spent over $700 extra to get what we needed. It was a great experience. Another customer: I’m calling about the wonderful sales person who helped me today. I had a lot to purchase. Life jackets, rope, tubes, just everything. He was right there with a cart ready to help. Tell him thank you. Customer compliments calls received in July. 2 - Kentwood, MI – Josiah Buys, Sales Asc. – I just had to let you know how great the service was at this store. Josiah is great with football. My son needed to get outfitted, and it was amazing how concerned he was. He spoke with my son and taught him a great deal. I had to purchase everything from him because he was just that good. I know I will be coming back to this store as long as Josiah is there. You have a really good employee. 5 – Grand Rapids, MI – Kristina Pittman, Sales Asc. – Voice mail from customer indicating that Chrissy was wonderful, very informative and helpful with her son to meet his needs. She said she knows that these young kids work hard and are rarely getting recognition so she wanted to call. 28 – Mount Pleasant, MI – Heather Kosinski, Assistant Mgr. – Heather was very, very professional and friendly. I had a problem with some Everlast boxing gloves. When I got the gloves home, I found there were two left hands. She handled the issues perfectly. I am impressed with MC Sports and with her. Mike Chase, Sales Asc. - I returned to the store with a problem. I had purchased a volley ball for my grandson and when I got home I discovered that I didn't have the equipment to blow it up. One of the girls laughed when I said this but Mike stepped right up and offered to blow it up for me and he did. I think that was outstanding customer service and I thought you should know about it. 44 – Ann Arbor, MI – Thomas Kroll, HFA Sales Asc. – Letter: After my recent shopping trip to your store, I had to take a moment and type this letter to you. I had spent the better part of Friday afternoon (July 15) in the Briarwood Mall looking at running shoes (JC Penny, Sears, etc.). Yours was the last store on my route through the mall. As the saying goes, I had "saved the best for last." Why? Because unlike ALL of the other stores I had visited, yours was the ONLY one with (a) available staff in the shoe department and (b) staff who actually knew a thing or two about shoes. I especially want to thank Thomas who spent more than 40 minutes in helping me narrow down a running shoe true to my foot form and one that would accommodate my orthotic insert. He was most patient, helpful, and knowledgeable. My positive experience was such from this point forward when anyone in my family (two adults and two teenage athletes) need sports shoes or other related equipment our one and only spot will be your store. Again, thank you to Thomas. I have had two great runs in my new shoes and I thank him for that. Sincerely, John Palladino 88 – Corporate Office – Tammy Schafer, Manager - Print Shop, Price Mgmt, Store Comm. – I genuinely appreciate your assistance with and attention to the problem I had with my Active Rewards coupon. However, I will not be able to make it out any time in the next few days. I will continue to be a loyal MC customer. Not only because weird things happen at your stores (Your staff actually comes up and asks me if they can help me!), but also because of this personal email correspondence. Scott McBain, Buyer & Shannon Musfelt, MA - I wanted to take a second to thank you both for your time and effort in getting my customer the right Yakima system for her 2 kayaks. The customer was very pleased with the time and effort we all put in on this sale. Not only did we get the $600+ dollars for the system, but she also bought 2-year UTS plans with each piece (4 total plans) pushing the total sale north of $700!! Not only did we secure a "customer for life" (her words) but she has also been telling all her friends and family about how MC Sports went out of our way to help her out with her new hobby. Once again, great job and thanks a bunch for your help with this! Company Confidential Page 8 136 – Holland, MI – Katie Putnam, Sales Asc. – I just wanted to tell you what a blessing Katie Putnam is at the Holland, MI store. I have been in the store often, and she always has a helping spirit, a smile and provides great insight on all sporting goods. Alex Bolthouse, Sales Asc. - I had a very good shopping experience. We had a young man named Alex assist us who was very professional, very knowledgeable, and very engaging. His is a good employee. Thank you. 141 – Muskegon, MI – Rebecca Indgjer, Sales Asc. - Email to Tammy Schafer: I just wanted to let you know I made it out to your Muskegon location last Saturday. I took my son to buy some football cleats. I'd like to send some kudos out to Rebecca. She was friendly and helpful as well. Just one more reminder to myself as to why I drive from Grand Haven to Muskegon, without even slowing down at the area of The Lakes Mall (Dicks and Dunham’s). Have a great day! Scott Little,Store Mgr. - Scott helped us by a paddle board. He helped with all the arrangements for getting it and purchasing it. We just wanted to say thank you. 133 – Springfield, MO – Ashley Jiles, Department Mgr. – Ashley did an awesome job helping us. She went above and beyond the call of duty. 144 – Brighton, MI – Eric Balla, Assistant Mgr. - Voice mail from customer to report that Eric gave her very good customer service. 145 – Traverse City, MI –See TOCS Highlight Story 149 – Wooster, OH – Greg Spademan, Sales Asc. – Customer left a voice mail that she was very impressed with Greg's service and wanted us to know that he went above and beyond in helping her find the product she wanted. Frank Kidney, Department Mgr. - Frank helped me two weeks ago with a 3-wheel golf cart, and yesterday he helped us get a ball return for a basketball hoop and a new net. I wanted to say how thankful I am that you have someone that knows what they're doing in the store. I think he's new because I haven't seen him before. I think you should acknowledge him somehow and thank you very much for all the attention I've been given. 153 – West Bend, WI – Ashlyn Amundson, Assistant Mgr. – I received very good customer service today. My husband had purchased a pedometer for me a couple of weeks ago. It didn't work. I returned to the store today and now I know all about pedometers. Ashlyn measured my steps with me and went through everything I needed to know. 169 – Rossford, OH – Jessica Urban, Sales Asc. – Our son is a special needs child and finding shoes is usually very hard to do. It's hard to find good store people to help us. Jessica was kind and patient and didn't rush us. We found the shoes he needed while being taken care of by Jessica. Because of the great service, we will be back in the future whenever our kids need anything. 172 – La Crosse, WI – Brooke Hall, Store Mgr., Jordan Schaefer, Assistant Mgr., Jordan Skaar, Associate Mgr. & Kevin Heinz, Associate Mgr. – The associates in this store help me immensely. The store manager Brooke Hall has a wonderful store. There are other managers that also know and help me. Jordan Schaefer and Jordan Skaar do a great job. I think I’ve met Kevin. Oh, all the managers in this store are good. I’m in my 60’s and have four grandchildren ages 14, 13, 12 and 10. They could do an ad for your store because they love the clothes and shoes so much. Every time I go to this store the managers are so helpful. They have coupons for me because I go there all the time. Dick’s is moving in down the street. It doesn’t matter. I’m not even going to stop there. When I walk in the store I hear, “Hi June.” They know me by my name and take really good care of me. When my kids come into town the first thing they say is, “Can we go to MC Sports?” I’d like to thank your staff for everything they do. 176 – Kenosha, WI – Allison Smaglik, Store Mgr. – Jeanne, Thank you for addressing the problem with the Drift Creek chair in such a positive fashion. I have just returned from MC Sports with a brand new chair. The manager was friendly, professional and the exchange was very simple. Kudos to your store for providing such a good experience following a bad product experience. Again, thank you for your assistance in solving this problem. 187 – Grand Blanc, MI – Kathy Wilson, Assistant Mgr. – We received great, excellent, kind service from Kathy and wanted to shout out for it. Company Confidential Page 9 200 – Branson, MO – Jarred Smith, Sales Asc. – Jarred was an outstanding sales representative. You didn't have the shoes I needed so he went in the back and searched until he found some. Then I needed some foot support and he found those too. I feel like I am walking on a cloud. This young man should get a raise. He did an outstanding job. Thanks for all of your help. Jarred Smith, Sales Asc. - I just found my receipt from June. I wrote the name of the person who helped me because he went above and beyond for me. I called the store before driving there. I explained the type of basketball sock I was looking for. Jarred told me they didn't carry this sock but please stop to the store so he could show me a couple of socks for football that were comparable. He told me to ask for him when I got there. He showed me the socks and explained everything about them. He was right. I bought a pair of football socks instead. He did a really great job. I'm a retail manager myself and I’ve just got to say that I'd love to have him as an employee. I'm sorry I called so late because he really deserves the recognition. 201 – Anderson, IN – Chase Calhoun, Sales Asc. – Chase helped my right and left and right and left again. He was excellent with my 13 year old. I own a store and know good help when I meet them. 202 – Ankeny, IA – Darrin Graham, Department Mgr. – Voice mail from customer that she was told to call about someone. She called to tell us that we have a really great worker in Darrin. He did an awesome job. 204 – Big Rapids, MI – Jordan Sweeney, Sales Asc., Tara Bourke, Sales Asc. & Wendee Wood, Assistant Mgr. – Customer had her 11 year-old son in the store to buy shoes and was impressed with Jordan, Tara and Wendy. She said they give kind service and an overall great job. Said her son even spoke about how kind and helpful Jordan was in fitting him with, and selling him a display shoe. 210 – East Peoria, IL – Carey Alexander, Sales Asc., Doug Igoe, Store Mgr., Meagan Naebsanit, Assistant Mgr. & Entire Staff – You have a really nice store and everyone working there is great. I'm a firearms enthusiast and Stu does a phenomenal job in the gun department. He knows a lot and I really value his opinion. The head store manager is great, and the associate manager, a young girl who works with Stu is wonderful. You have competitive pricing on firearms. I've gone to all the other stores, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, and they don't offer the same low prices. It's not just the people in the gun department though. It's the whole entire team. “Your customer doesn’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” - Damon Richards CAP VOLUNTEER EVENT WITH STORE #146—Highland, IN On Saturday, August 2nd, we here at Store #146 set up an information table/mobile store for a bicycle ride fundraiser for the Hammond Port Authority and local bike trail.
