Lattice on charcoal non-woven with white sand (CX1227) from Candice Olson Dimensional Surfaces collection
York Wallcoverings claims to be the first American manufacturer to add sand to
wallpaper, and we are inclined to believe them. The company describes the process
as “a lot like a child’s glitter-and-glue project,” but as you can see, the results are
grown-up indeed. The sand adds subtle texture. Shown here is lattice on charcoal
non-woven with white sand from Candice Olson Dimensional Surfaces ($130 per
roll). Buy it locally through Finishing Touches Interiors, 227 W. North Ave.,
312-787-5404.

Inspired by documents and patterns dating
back to the 18th century, York’s artistic,
traditional wallpapers are still printed in the
company’s York, Pa., factory, using antique
presses similar to those employed during
the company’s founding in 1895.

‘Watt Time’ is it?
Here’s a bright idea for early risers (or early riser wannabes): Try this light bulb-shaped alarm clock to start the day before the sun
rises. The time and date are displayed in blue at the base of the bulb, and the happy button (snooze) sits up top on the “socket.”

Wall art
Just as artisans of the 16th century
perfected the trompe-l’oeil (fool the eye)
technique, wallpaper designers are using
pigments, sand and glass to add dimension to otherwise ordinary walls.
A couple of new wallpaper techniques
are eye-catching: recycled windshield
glass and a mix of metallic ink over repurposed sand. Ronald Redding, design
vice president at York Wallcoverings, is
using these light-reflective metallics to
add visual depth without actual weight.
The wallcovering’s fade-resistant nylon
flocking has a velvety appeal that may
trick the eye — but never the touch.

Eco-designer Kelly LaPlante’s
mantra is “green is a standard, not
a style.”
To demonstrate this point, the
California designer with a celebrity clientele presented random
pictures of interiors torn from
magazines on a recent visit to
Kansas City. Any room, LaPlante
says, even if it’s shocking pink, can
be designed with eco-friendly materials because they’re so readily
available these days.
“I can source any look in 30
minutes,” she said, passing around
pink linen, hemp and organic cotton fabrics to an audience Aug. 27
at Urban Dwellings Design home
furnishings boutique. “There is no
perfect eco solution. But you don’t
want children in China” making
your furniture.
LaPlante was in Kansas City to
sign her book, “Ecologique” (Organic Interior Design, $50), featuring the diverse looks of 15 of
her clients’ homes, including
those of actors Ally Sheedy, Michael Rapaport and Tiffani Thiessen. LaPlante is giving 100 percent of the net proceeds from
sales of the book to Global Green
USA and the Blank Theatre Company. The 159-page book, full of
photographs and resources, is

available at Urban Dwellings Design, 412 Delaware St., 816-5694313.
LaPlante, of Venice Beach,
Calif., is often quoted as a green
expert in articles. Included in her
conversation with the audience:
❙ Bamboo products are probably the biggest example of greenwashing, she said. Even though
bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource, chemicals are used to varying degrees to make the products. Some companies do a better
job than others, she said, citing
Nandina, the maker of bamboo
and organic cotton blend towels
(see www.nandina.info for a list of
Kansas and Missouri suppliers),
as one of the better manufacturers.
❙ If you want to go green, cleaning products are the best way to
start. Try Seventh Generation,
Method and tried-and-true vinegar.
❙ An important step, she said, is
using organic bedding and mattresses because of their absence
of harmful chemicals.
❙ Green can look luxurious, she
says. An example is the Q Collection in New York, www.qcollection.com.
❙ The recession has affected
many people’s willingness to go
green, she acknowledged. “It’s
more expensive,” she said. “But
someday, hopefully 5 to 10 years
from now, the term green won’t
be used. It will be a policy.”

would have to choose plants that
do well with little natural light.
Such a decorative option works
best with a dramatically sweeping staircase — which you don’t
seem to have. So let’s consider a
staircase. The recess is tall
enough to allow for a light to be
installed above the desk. I suspect that your own storage area
meets these specs.

doors or cabinetry added to this

Also, latches and other hardware
for opening and closing storage
compartments should be chosen
in accordance with the overall
design of the area beneath the
staircase. Is it to be decorative?

The ABC Kids Expo
The ABC Kids Expo — All Baby &
Children Show — was also in Las Vegas at
the Convention Center. Traffic seemed very
brisk. Vendors’ take on the show was
uneven, ranging from “slow” to “fantastic.”
One common observation was that traffic
comes in waves as buyers make their way
from front to back and the upper hall to the
lower one of the convention center. The
show is huge with products ranging from
baby and children’s furniture and strollers,
to breast pumps and maternity fashions, to
plush and room décor, to diaper bags and
personal care and more. Many familiar gift

exhibitors, including Ribbit Ribbit showing
