Wallpaper enjoying a High Style Renaissance
The word “wallpaper” can conjure
up images of tacky florals, kitschy
chickens and other out-dated
prints that are more suited for
farmhouses.
But in the design world, wallpaper
is enjoying a high-style renaissance.
No longer relegated to hallways or
guest bathrooms (although small
spaces are excellent candidates for
the paper treatment), wallpaper
prints are sleek and contemporary,
often mimicking or revamping
classic prints from the modernist
era.
“Big scale, big pattern and loud
color,” said Egg & Dart founder
Steven Love. Those are the trends
he’s been noticing in his Palm
Desert showroom. “Wallpaper
now almost acts as art on the wall
itself.”
Egg & Dart, with a second
location in Denver, works with
manufactures and designers, and
specializes in high-end furniture,
textiles lighting and accessories.
They are also able to connect home
owners with designers.
Wallpaper makes a gigantic impact
for the least amount of money,
in transforming residential or
commercial interiors” Love said.
“It’s very textural.”
Favorite local colors include bright
acid greens, clove, brass, silver and
the Palm Springs favorite, orange,
added Sutherland.
What the paper adds is a textural
backdrop that is also fun and
creative.
“Wallpaper is art,” Love added,
“And I do think the younger
clientele may not have the budget
to buy art right now. They can
install this on the wall and it’ll
look like art itself.”
Entire rooms, certain walls or even
ceilings can be papered, adding
layers to a space.
“It used to be layering, print on
print, on print on print, and
flowers, flowers everywhere,”
said Sutherland. “Then everyone
said ‘No more flowers!’ And now
people are starting to layer again.
But they’re laying in a different
way. They’re layering organically
and layering with textures.”
Starting from the ground up, rugs,
walls and accents all add into
creating a multi-layered space, said
Sutherland.
Many popular patterns have a
modernist flair, screaming “Mad
Men” or lounge style. Patterns like
damask, jacobean or tracery are
all in style but with contemporary
twists, by “mixing it with an
antique background and either
embossing or embellishing the
prints,” Love explained.
In addition to the surge in
popularity of wallpaper, Love has
also seen an increased demand
of papers made from natural and
greener materials like banana
leaves or other fibers.
Foiled patterns in shades of silvers
and golds are also popular, said
Bunny Sutherland, owner of
Sutherland Interior Design.
The organic popularity, said Love,
is both in theme and what it’s
made out of.
“A lot of people like papers that are
put on randomly,” said Sutherland.

Glass has also become a favorite,
with beading adhered to the paper.
Printed wallpaper is also popping
up in local haunts. For example, in

Riviera Palm Springs, the walls —
and sometimes the ceilings — are
lined with textured, printed or
colorful paper.
Many patterns and colors intersect,
reds with blacks and oranges, blues
and yellows inspired by the desert.
Throughout much of the hotel, the
theme is a blend of ’60s style with
contemporary accents.
“We want to bring back some of
that history,” said John Hanson,
senior sales manager at the hotel.
The most common story is
how during renovations before
reopening in the fall of 2008,
crews found walls papered with an
orange tracery-like pattern, with
curves and loops that screamed
Palm Springs modern.
Inspired by the discovery, the
designers created a similar
covering, but in green to go
throughout the hallways of the
hotel’s rooms.
“There isn’t one specific style,” said
Hanson. “The walls don’t have to
be flat.”

Lilac Trail (JG0620)
BRANCHING OUT
• See Them: Walt Whitman may have
mused about When Lilacs Last in the
Dooryard Bloom'd, but we're loving the
churchyard at North Hills Christian
Reformed Church. Here, just north
of 16 Mile Road on Adams Road in
Troy, a large grove, about 150 by 60
feet, once stretched across what is now
Adams Road. When that road was built,
much of the grove was torn down. "We
expanded a patch on the eastern side of
the property (along with a small trail)
from shoots transplanted from the main
patch," says the Rev. Randy Engle, who
pastors the church. "They were likely
planted in the 1880s — and certified
as the largest lilac grove in Oakland
County."
• Grow Them: "Most who want to
grow lilacs remember Grandma's yard;
however, what most fail to understand
is that Grandma's lilacs were in the back
corner or in an area where they had
room to grow," says Ryan Youngblood, of
Rochester-based R. Youngblood & Co.,
a landscape design/build firm. "Give a
lilac room to be the lilac it wants to be!"
They like high sun, too.
• Celebrate Them: See a wide variety
of lilacs in bloom on Mackinac Island
during the annual Lilac Festival, this
year running June 6-15. Visitors will see
some historic varieties, many of which
were brought there during the Colonial
era.

Landlord-Friendly Ways to Unlease
Your Imagination
Q: We are grad students renting a
nondescript little house for a year,
which means we can't paint the
walls — they're all white! — or do
much else that's decorative. I've
always loved decorating, but my
artsy hands are tied. Maybe you
have some suggestions that won't
compromise our security deposit?
A: The answer to your injunction
is: Think Temporary. There are
any number of here-today-gonetomorrow decorating tricks that
will temporarily relieve your
creative ache. A few to consider:
—Peel-and-stick removable
wallpapers with patterns, murals,
even your own photos and/or
artwork. To enjoy this year, peel
and port to your next digs when
your lease is up. A few of the
many sources: sherwin-williams.

—Color the inside of bookcases or

for.
—Go a bit mad with colorful
curtains: Hang them so they
extend beyond the windows
themselves to add interest to the
walls, too.

—Velcro fabric to the wall behind
beds, canopy-style.
—Go on: Dare to paint just
one wall some wonderful color.
Repainting should cost no more
than a gallon of paint and an hour
of your time while you're waiting
for the movers next year.
A: Invite a couple of strong friends
in and hang it! Your showstopper
will also be a room-maker! The
best location for such a sensation
might be behind your sofa, even if
the sofa back overlaps the frame
bottom a little. Over-scaling can be
a huge WOW factor in a room of
any size.
I loved him.
Q: The wood floor in our guest
room is a mess. We are expecting
relatives for a week next month
and need a quick remedy. My
husband votes for carpeting, but
that's expensive. What else can we
do — fast?
I love the painting, too, but it's
huge! It's nearly six feet wide and
four feet high with an ornate
gilded frame. My house is kind
of humble. This is a showstopper.
What should I do with it?
A: Paint it. A couple of coats of
deck enamel will give the entire
room a lift. White is always right;
black can be smashing, especially
in a high-gloss finish. The late
and truly great interior designer
Q: OMG! My much-loved uncle
has left me the l9th-century
landscape painting that had hung
in his dining room ever since he
came to this country.
William Hodgins famously
lacquered a client's bedroom
floor a brilliant aquamarine and
trimmed it in white.
The only caveat: The glossier the
paint finish, the more your floor's
imperfections will shine forth. But
between us, the net effect will be
well-worth a little extra sanding.

Stylish Storage Ideas

Open storage in any room can be
both practical and dazzling fun.
Granted, you need to exercise
a sort of discipline when you
intend to expose stored things
to public view in your home, but
it is possible to create attractive
arrangements that serve a purpose.
Avoid sloppy stacks, tattered books
and piles. But if your intention is
to artfully arrange vases, photos
or dishes, an open display can be a
big plus in the smallest of rooms.
A favorite idea of many is to
acquire an etagere. An etagere is
an open shelf unit intended for
the arrangement of displays. These
can be made of wood, metal or
wrought iron and range from basic
to ornate. Styles range from clean
contemporary to curvy traditional.
Some people use open bookshelves
as a type of room divider because
of the ability to easily see past
what the storage shelves. Generally
etageres are about twelve to
fourteen inches deep and stand
about six to seven feet tall.

Another sassy idea is to install
wallpaper on the back of a wall
mounted storage unit or a closed
back piece of furniture suitable
for presentation of personal
items. This concept allows for an
unlimited array of design motifs
and color combinations that will
become a hip background for
favorite items. You can purchase
a wall hung display unit that is
as narrow as 7 inches deep, and
ranges up to 12 inches deep. Think
about capturing a vintage wall shelf
and refurbishing it as storage for
collectibles. Store sea shells, small
figurines or even bar wear might be
stored on narrow shelves. Coffee
mugs, teacups or a collection of
creamers and sugar bowls can also
sit on shallow shelves. Generally
speaking, I would suggest that you
seek a small wallpaper pattern
to apply to the back of such a
furniture item.
Here we see "Small Trellis Pattern"
by Waverly that is pre-pasted and
strippable, making it easy to apply.
A splash of an accent color can
enable a simple shelving unit to
achieve more importance in a
space. In addition to wallpaper,
consider plain old paint! You
might also get more ambitious and
apply a faux finish or perhaps glue
a fabric to the back of a display
unit. Both of these ideas prepare
an interesting surface to serve as
a stunning background for basic
white dishes. You may also have an
assortment of cobalt blue dishes
or vintage carnival glass items that
would be set off by an accent color.
Floor standing storage pieces
range from consoles to hutches
to china cabinets. Often there is
an open top part to a traditional
china cabinet and that might be
decorated in the manner described
above with a different color. I have
an Irish spice cabinet in my dining
room with narrow open shelves
above a deeper console table. The
back is painted a soft sage green;
all of the ceramic and porcelain
items I display go with that color. I
also show copper mugs and plates
that create a nice contrast to the
green. Know that you can adopt
the same type of colorful solution
for closed storage. The surprise
of color would be mainly for your
private pleasure and experienced
every time you open an armoire
or solid china cabinet. You could
treat the insides of a tiny hall closet
in the same manner and add a
battery-powered utility light that
will light up the colorful space
when the door is opened. Another
twist on this theme might be to
remove a solid closet door and
replace it with a single light door
that features frosted glass.

Q: We have a little porch just
off the living room of our new
house. The trouble is, this is a new
development, and the neighbors'
houses are really close. We put in
two poplar trees (they're supposed
to grow fast), but what to do for
some privacy in the meantime?
A: Love that you're taking the long
view — Mother Nature designs
the best privacy screens ever! I
checked: Poplars can grow 6 feet
or more a year, so by next summer
your problem may be moot.
Meanwhile, think blinds, curtains
or an attractive standing screen,
like the one on this beguiling

that stands guard against the
neighbors' eyes, and it's easy to
"grow" yourself, according to
the clever craftspeople at York

from 1/2-inch plywood) a three- or
four-panel screen and cover it with
a joyful pattern (this is "Emma's
Garden" from the Waverly Cottage

Bamboo or wood-slat blinds offer
another easy outdoor option. They

the process. Ditto for outdoor

Interior designers use curtains
all the time to coax open spaces
into feeling and living like a real
room. Even floaty sheer fabrics
will screen the view. A heavy fabric
like duck cloth or canvas will also
waterproof your outdoor space, at
least against congenial rains.
Whatever material you choose,
make sure it's up to al fresco duty:
Look for fade-proof, water-safe
sturdy goods from a manufacturer
like Sunbrella (sunbrella.com),
or fabrics with an applied finish
that shrugs off raindrops and hot
sunbeams with equal aplomb.
Q: We are planning to redecorate
our great room, and I'm interested
in what's trending in colors, styles
and so forth.
We won't get started till the fall, so
can you tell us what will be "hot"
in 2015?
A: Lots of different opinions on
that! But you're in luck. I just sat
through three days of predictions
by top trendspotting companies,
who came from around the world
to peer into the future at the
SURTEX surface design show in
New York last month. Here's one:
—Laurie Pressman, VP Pantone
Color Institute: "Keep your eye on
street art. Street art trickles up. It's
a huge, huge, huge, huge influence!
Louis Vuitton is now working with
street artists.
"We're in a world where
lifestyle is the driver. Think of
Anthropologie: teens shop there;
so does Mom and the 82-year-old
grandmother.
"Be alert to two macro-trends:
One, the green thing — it's
become a social value. ... Never
mind the irony, that the pigments
used to make the color green are
themselves toxic! Never before has
green been a fashion color. Now we
have green hair, green nail polish.
Yellow-green used to be associated
with nausea; now even McDonald's
European logo is green/yellow.
"Two, the 2008 recession. Grays
increase in popularity during a
recession. But even now, gray is
not going away. It's become a longterm investment color: timeless,
dependable. (At the same time)
consumers now want bright, bold
shades, like red!"

I’ve been asked a lot about this lately. Now, I’m from the generation that spent

so much more in texture, finishes and color. There is definitely a place for wall
