W ith summer underway, people frequently ask themselves, “what shall we do today?” I believe the answer is clear … come to the Port of Everett Marina. The Summer Waterfront Concert series and the Farmers Market are in motion. The 4th of July festivities are just around the corner. On any day, our marina Waterfront Trail System offers beautiful views and great exercise. The Jetty Island Ferry is up and running for the 4th of July weekend. August is hot: the Everett Yacht Club hosts the 2nd annual North Sound Cruise In; Fresh Paint Festival is in the south marina; and a new event, Rudders and Wheels, a classic car and boat show, is in the Craftsman District. The car and boat show is followed by live music from “CLASSIX,” a 15 piece local band playing Classic rock and roll, for a sock hop dance on the 12th Street Pier. Waterfront Concerts Residents and boaters can also grab the free Tulalip Resort Casino Shuttle. For more details visit the Port of Everett’s website. Also don’t forget our Tenant Appreciation Event in August at the 12th Street Pier near Waterfront Center. The event included a dedication ceremony for the statue, followed by the opening night of the Waterfront Concert series. Kay Zuanich and Barbara Piercey, co-chairs of the Fisherman’s Tribute Statue Committee, planned since 2004 for the statue to honor the rich fishing heritage of the Everett waterfront. Past Port Commissioners Don Hopkins, Phil Bannan and Jim Shaffer authorized the statue and it took seven years to make this vision a reality. The statue was designed and fabricated by Kevin Pettelle, and the plaza and park were designed by Port staff Larry Crawford (retired) and Jim Weber. His buddy got the gear out of the water, he flashed the engines of his 38 Riviera Fishtale 2 and put the hammer down. He said his boat just seemed to pick the right direction, pushing unerringly toward Camano Head, as he notified the Coast Guard that Fishtale 2 was en route and asked them to repeat the coordinates. 1. The Captain of the distressed vessel made sure all passengers had life vests ON 2. Upon noticing the leaking issue, the Captain of the distressed vessel immediately notified the Coast Guard on Channel 16 noting the issue and his location (Moments later the radio went dead) 3. The Captain then shot off flares 4. The Captain continued to manually pump his boat with the reserve hand pump 5. The Captain and his wife remained calm at all times and got their children off first The boater in distress: 1. Monitored Channel 16 “Dobie threw me a pen so I could write them down,” Goodsell said. “Then he got life jackets on both of us and made spares ready, along with a throw ring. At about that point we spotted the vessel a half-mile off our bow.” He notified the Coast Guard that he had the distressed vessel in sight, then slowed so his wake wouldn't give more problems to the people aboard the badly listing 24-footer. 2. Heard the distress call and acted immediately 3. Notified the Coast Guard and asked for their professional direction 4. Followed through with the direction of the Coast Guard on Channel 16/22 and cell phone “We lost radio contact as the sinking boat's electrical system fried. I told the Coast Guard the new position and that we were on-site,” he said. Dobie got a line on the vessel to pull it near, and made sure everyone had life jackets on. He first rescued the children off the distressed boat. The captain kept frantically pumping on his extra manual pump, but we all knew we didn't have much time,” Goodsell said. “The Coast Guard then established cell phone contact with me. I told them all four children were safe, but that I believed the vessel was going down and I asked for instructions. They calmly advised me to get the rest of the passengers off the boat and to cut the line between our boats.” The captain and his wife moved out the front hatch and we got them safely aboard Fishtale 2. Dobie removed the lines, and we backed away. Goodsell said everyone was awestruck at how quickly the vessel turned over. “There were only minutes before the death roll,” he said, “and had we not gotten the passengers out, it would have gone over even more quickly. The Coast Guard worked us through with complete professionalism and kept things as calm as they could both over the phone and the radio. Everyone was in control, but my heart was pumping like I had a 42-pound springer on the line.” Goodsell said it didn't take long to get a call from Vessel Assist, asking for coordinates and eventually towing the overturned vessel to Everett. “All I can say is that we're glad it didn't end tragically,” he said.
