The Monkey year occupies the ninth place in the Chinese Zodiac. Each year is related to an animal sign according to a 12-year-cycle. There are many traditions and beliefs surrounding CNY. Certain personality traits are attributed to each Zodiac Sign, not unlike the Astrology Zodiac Signs in the western world. Those born in the Year of the Monkey are usually witty, lively, flexible and very ambitious regarding careers and fitness. Monkey years are considered auspicious and come around every twelve years: 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968,1980, 192, 2004, 2016. Monkey personalities go well with the Ox and the Rabbit. They can live together in harmony as long as they have enough space and freedom. Be warned, the Monkey clashes with the Tiger and the Pig! Lucky numbers: 4 and 9 Lucky days: The 14th and 28th of any Chinese lunar month Lucky colours: Gold, Blue and White Lucky flowers: Crepe myrtle and Chrysanthemum Lucky months: August and December in the Chinese lunar calendar The current Year of the Monkey (2016) is particularly interesting because it is the year of ‘Fire Monkey’ which occurs only every 60 years (the last time in 1956). People born during a ‘Fire Monkey’ year are ambitious and adventurous. Famous people born in the Year of the Monkey Loretta Lynn 4 Marilyn Monroe Michael Jackson Nelson Mandela Elvis Presley Yul Brynner Walt Disney Richard Montalban Barack Obama Julius Caesar Charles Dickens Leonardo Da Vinci 4 Chinese New Year Zodiacs Your Chinese Zodiac sign is derived from your birth year, according to the Chinese lunar calendar. See the years of each animal below or use the calculator on the right to determine your own sign. Those born in January and February take care: Chinese (Lunar) New Year moves between 21 January and February 20. If you were born in January or February, check whether your birth date falls before or after Chinese New Year to know what your Chinese zodiac year is. 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960 2014, 2002, 1990, 1978, 1966 2009, 1997, 1985, 1973, 1961 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974, 1962 2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968 2011, 1999, 1987, 1975, 1963 2017, 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964 2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970 2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965 2019, 2007, 1995, 1983, 1971 5 Valentine’s Day History Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. (The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.) Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. Typical Valentine’s Day Greetings In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colourful pictures known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. (An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for 4 Christmas.) Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines. 6 Valentine’s Day Quiz 1.‘d‘Ich liebe dich’ means ‘I love you’ in which language? 2.What is the term used when a couple on a date share entertainment expenses? 3. We want to make sure that you are safe and cool this summer. Here are a few handy tips to stay cool this summer: •Check the weather forecast to see when the hot days are coming •If it is predicted that the weather is going to be hot plan to do any outdoor activities or outings early in the morning or later in the afternoon •Drink fluids! It is recommended that you drink at least 8 cups of water based fluids a day (unless your doctor has said otherwise) •Keep your caffeine consumption to a minimum as this causes dehydration •Tell the staff if you are feeling unwell particularly if you have been outside •Use your air conditioner to cool your room •Ask for an Ice Block: we have them available in the freezers. •Don’t use fans in a hot room: all this does is blow the hot air around and does not cool the room. Please note that our facility cat (Puss) has high cholesterol. PLEASE DO NOT FEED HER MILK OR CREAM! It will make her very sick. Cat food only please. 14 Library Service Sally and Greg run a bus service that gives residents access to the library to choose their own books.
