I wish to share with everyone in the community and staff that my year has been enjoyable. The staff and students have been welcoming, and the school board has been very supportive. I do want to take a moment and share with the students that even though I have not personally been involved in many aspects or routines of your day, I have always wished you success and well-being. I have appreciated your efforts to make this year very successful. The Cadets have had an overall fine performance in all of their endeavors. Keep up the good work for the rest of the year. Finish strong and look forward to the challenges. WEST POINT BEEMER JR., Sr. High School WPB Seatbelt Selfies - a great way to promote safe driving Special Points of Interest: It is hard to believe it is already April and spring has arrived and everyone is looking forward to the last two months of school. However, this is a very busy time of the year. Students will be doing the state assessments and trying to keep pace with all of the academic challenges and activities that face us each and every year. Hopefully, the weather is cooperative for us to perform our activities and enjoy the finishing touches at the end of the year. If you haven’t heard about WPB Seatbelt Selfies I would encourage you to check them out at https://www.facebook.com/groups/911694282214734/. This initiative was developed by our student council and is currently being funded by community members and organizations to encourage seatbelt safety. Here is how it works. Student are to take a selfie with their seatbelt on. If they are the driver, they must hold the car keys in the photo as well. (No driving selfies allowed!!) After taking the picture, students and staff members are to upload their images to the created Facebook page listed above. Every day these images are put into a random drawing and if chosen. the student(s) receive $5 each!! A special thanks goes out to the following individuals and groups who have assisted by funding this initiative!! We are excited about the new additions that are taking place to our east. It sounds like traffic will run smoothly on 18th road as we proceed into summer, but I would like to remind everyone to proceed cautiously as heavy equipment and additional traffic will be present in this area. Be on the lookout and stay safe as this positive addition to our community is being constructed!!! D.J. Weddle Principal, WPPS Beemer Elementary Happy spring! 4th Quarter is upon us and so we are beginning our state testing (NeSA). Third and fourth graders will be taking the state reading test on Wednesday, April 15th and Thursday, April 16th. They will take the state math test after Easter break on Wednesday, April 22nd and Thursday, April 23rd. Our students and staff work hard to prepare for these tests. Here are 10 testing tips to keep in mind: 1. Prepare the night before! 2. Go to bed early. 3. Eat a healthy breakfast. 4. Wear comfortable clothes. 5. RELAX…..take slow deep breaths. 6. Follow directions. Read each question and all the answer options. 7. Don’t be click happy. Go slowly through the test. Use the accommodations available like the highlighter and strike key (to cross off answers you don’t want). 8. Move on if you don’t know an answer. 9. REVIEW. Make sure all questions are answered. 10. Plan something fun to do after the test. Testing can be stressful so be sure to take good care of yourself. We believe our children can do well on the tests. April is a busy month for our school to show the state how smart we are and how hard we have been working all year long. We will kick off our testing window with a motivational speaker (DeMoine Adams). He is a former Husker and has some encouraging words that will motivate our students to try their hardest to represent West Point Elementary. We will then start testing on April 7th kicking off with Reading. Please make sure your 3rd-6th graders are sleeping a little extra and eating a good breakfast this month. Thank you for all of your support of our spring fundraiser. The PTO was pleased with all of the money that was raised for the school, and they are excited to help make a difference with their funding. Also, we are planning an April all school assembly to celebrate the success of the spring fundraiser. We will have our money roll and other prizes given to the top raising students. Spring activities are in full swing at West Point-Beemer and we are all hoping for warmer weather. Baseball, track and golf will hit full stride with competitions this month so make sure and take a look at the calendar to see if you can come out and watch the Cadets in action. Spring activities look to be an exciting time for us so here are some things to watch for. Our track team is looking to make some noise in class B. The baseball program will look different as we have started a cooperative agreement with GACC and Scribner-Snyder. Our boy’s golf program also has 5 competitors and will be looking to grow as the season progresses. Along with baseball, track and golf, both band and choir will be competing in their district music competitions toward the end of the month. State FCCLA and State FFA are also on the calendar for the month. FCCLA and FFA will be taking a bus-load to Lincoln this year as both groups have been very successful. On April 25th we also have the annual Prom dinner and dance at the Nielsen Center. Post Prom will be held at the high school. The evening will begin with the doors opening at 6:00 P.M. and the meal will start at 6:30 P.M. At 7:30 the photographer will start with picture taking. The dance will begin at 9:00 and finish at 12:00am. The Post Prom activities will then begin at 12:30. We would like to remind your child that all non West Point-Beemer dates must be in grades 9-12 and attending high school. All dates from another school will be required to have a signed form from their school’s administration stating that they are a student Any 9 or 10 grade students from West Point-Beemer who will be attending Prom as a date with an upper classman will also need to be signed up in the office. Once the students arrive at the Nielsen Center they will not be allowed to leave the building. The students will be allowed sufficient time to change for Post Prom. The locker rooms and restrooms will all be available for the students to change and leave their things. FCCLA FCCLA Our Senior FCCLA chapter had five members, McKenzie Wragge, Paige Meier, Angela Kienbaum, Gabrielle Wragge & Emilia Kienbaum, attend the annual FCCLA Peer Retreat in Kearney in later February. McKenzie and Mrs. Gustafson were on the planning and implementation of the event. Many of our members are getting ready to compete at State STAR in April. Emilia and Gabrielle will be vying for State Peer Team positions and Paige will be running for a State Officer position. AVON fund raising will be completed soon. If your member did not sell items, they will owe more for State.Members will be receiving their individual bills for State Conference as soon as our AVON fund raiser is over. All bills must be paid prior to State. We had several members work the Partners in Progress Banquet at the end of February. March brought about the annual Agriculture Appreciation Supper. Our FCCLA members helped with serving the meal and clean up. Between the two chapters we have 43 members competing in State STAR at State Conference. We wish everyone good luck. The school year is coming to a close rapidly. We will be holding our annual spring awards and recognition banquet on Monday, May 4th. The evening will begin at 6:30 pm with a potluck supper followed by special recognitions and awards. All members, their families and friends are invited to attend. Parents please watch for a letter with specifics about the banquet. Junior High FCCLA We are excited to be finishing up our AVON fund raising sales. Profits from the sales will help those who sold items to pay for State Conference. Bills will be handed out to members as soon as AVON sales are final. The more a member sells, the more they earn. Please pay your student’s bill promptly as it must be paid prior to State Conference. Everyone in our chapter has qualified for State STAR. We are anxious and excited to attend and compete. Our annual Spring Awards and Recognition Banquet will be on Monday, May 4th at 6:30 PM. All members, their families and friends are invited to attend. The evening will begin with a potluck supper. Parents please watch for an informational letter at the end of April about the banquet. April News for Special Olympics: We are getting into the busiest time of our year and working towards the State Summer Games in May. We are practicing roller skating, swimming, and power lifting and will try and get outside as much as possible for track along with playing some volleyball this month. Thursday and Friday shows start at 7PM and the Sunday matinee starts at 2PM. Tickets prices : $5 for adults and $4 for students The musical will be held at the West Point Community Theatre. Please, plan to take a flight with the cast and crew of “Return to the Forbidden Planet”! With dialogue by Shakespeare and music from the 1960s, you’re bound to be entertained! Students toured the campus, participated in a student panel discussion, heard presentation on financial aid, ate lunch at the college cafeteria, and visited various departments that align with each student’s career cluster of interest. This opportunity was made possible through the EducationQuest 8th Grade Minigrant. Nominations of in-coming 5th and 6th grade representatives to this summer’s Future Leaders of America Camp will be completed soon. The Institute takes place on UNL’s East Campus. The only expense for students is transportation to and from the Institute. The event is sponsored by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture. Applications are due April 15, 2015. See Mrs. Kroon for more information. Youth Energy Camp The yearly Youth Energy Camp forms are in the Guidance Office. The camp is from July 14-18 in Halsey, Nebraska and is open to all current 9-11th grade students. Complete the RSVP Form and return it to Cuming County Public Power. Unicameral Youth Legistature Experience what it is like to serve as a state senator! Learn the process of the Nebraska Legislature from state senators, staff and lobbyists by sponsoring bills, conducting committee hearings and debating legislation. The Unicameral Youth Legislature will convene June 7-10, 2015. Registration and application forms can be obtained from NebraskaLegislature.gov/uyl . Registration Deadline is May 15, 2015. Admissions, housing and financial aid offices will send information on residence hall contracts, freshman class registration, and financial aid award packages. Campuses sometimes have residence halls that may be more desirable than others and the better accommodations will be taken quickly if they are on a first-come first-served basis. Parents or students with concerns or questions regarding this type of material should call Mrs. Kroon or the school your student plans to attend. United States Service Academy Applications for nominations for United States Service Academy have arrived in the Guidance Office. Completed applications from potential candidates who intend to enter academy classes starting July 2016 are due October 31, 2015. Please See Mrs. Kroon for more information. UNMC Summer Health Professions Career Workshop The workshop will be held August 3rd - August 5th, 2015. Must have miniumum 3.0 GPA and have an interest in health professions. Cost for the program is $300. See Mrs. Kroon for more information. UNL College of Architecture High School Workshop Junior students will investigate issues surrounding design and learn more about the design professions of architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. The workshop will be held June 7-13 2015. The fee for the workshop is $585, includes supplies, program fees, meals and lodging. See Mrs. Kroon for more information. Bryan College of Health Sciences Summer Camp Bryan College of Health Sciences is offering a summer health career camp at their campus in Lincoln on July 6-10 or July 2024. Cost is $350.00 plus a $50.00 nonrefundable deposit at application. Please see Mrs. Kroon for more information. The social hour will begin at 4:30 p.m., photos at 5:30 p.m., and dinner at 6:30 p.m. As a new alumni, graduating seniors will receive an invitation to attend the banquet. Each graduate and his or her date will receive free admission to the alumni banquet courtesy of the alumni association. We encourage each of the graduating seniors to plan to attend the alumni banquet if possible. The West Point Public School Alumni Association works very hard on behalf of the students and the school district, and the alumni banquet is a great way to become involved with this organization. SENIORS: FAFSA Applications Due Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be completed electronically as soon as possible. All students should complete the FAFSA and check the college’s deadline for financial aid due dates. Those who have completed the FAFSA forms will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Read all directions carefully. Some colleges require you to send a copy to them; others do it via electronic transfer. Check with your college to see which method is used.
