Africa Oye 2016 Brochure
africaoye We used to joke that Oyé was Liverpool’s ‘secret festival’ because no one had heard of us – back in the days of Princes Park and then across the water in Birkenhead when we would only get a few hundred people if the weather wasn’t being kind. Welcome to Africa Oyé 2016! Dance, smile, eat, drink [responsibly] and most of all, enjoy! So to now be able to look at the photos of the last couple of years with 20,000 people packed into Sefton Park, and hearing that 80,000 visited us across the weekend AND as we prepare for our 25th anniversary festival in 2017 ... it hardly seems possible. There will be plenty of time for reflection ahead of our milestone year next time, for now, let me welcome you to Africa Oyé 2016! This year’s music line-up is one I'm really proud of. From the incredible sounds of Mbongwana Star and Pat Thomas to the pioneering kora player Sona Jobarteh all the way through to UK talent like Akala, I think we’ve got a fantastically eclectic selection on offer. We’ve also been able to bring you even more traders and free workshops of all kinds, for all ages this year, as well as expand the Oyé Village where you can chill, take your pick of the world's cuisine, and listen to a great line up of DJs spinning their wares. And don’t forget, money spent at the Oyé Inn, on Oyé merchandise, photo keyrings and of course all donations into our charity buckets, will help keep the festival FREE for what I hope is many years to come. Oyé belongs to all of us and I can’t thank you enough for all your support in making the event what it is today. Paul Duhaney Artistic Director GHANA PAT THOMAS & KWASHIBU AREA BAND SATURDAY 18 Pat Thomas has been hailed as ‘The Golden Voice Of Africa’ with his unique tone and songs that come from the Fanti and Ashanti Twi dialects of the Akan language. His music updates the high life and the afrobeat – vocal and rhythmic music that rose during the 70’s in West Africa. He will perform at Oyé in conjunction with the Kwashibu Area Band led by multi-instrumentalist Kwame Yeboah [Cat Stevens, Patrice] and saxophonist Ben Abarbanel-Wolff [Ebo Taylor, Poets of Rhythm]. DR CONGO MBONGWANA STAR S UNDAY 19 Mbongwana Star are composed of former members of Congolese stars, Staff Benda Bilili. Shedding any preconceptions of African music that an audience may have, they perform an incredible mix of electro-rock, soukous and everything in-between. Defying comparison, Mbongwana Star’s socially and politically fueled lyrics combined with their unique sound is sure to be one of the highlights of the festival's main stage programme. GAMBIA UK SONA JOBARTEH SATURDAY 18 Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a West African Griot family. Breaking away from tradition, she is a modern-day pioneer in an ancient, male-dominated hereditary tradition that has been exclusively handed down from father to son for the past seven centuries. Sona has modernised Kora music bringing a rhythmic edge to her compositions that fits her remarkable voice. Sona Jobarteh visits Oyé as part of her TAAMO TOUR, a ten date jaunt around the UK, which also includes special appearances at Glastonbury and London Jazz Festival. MADAGASCAR DAMILY SATURDAY 18 Originally from Tongobory, southwest of Madagascar, Damily is considered as one of the pioneers of ‘Tsapiky’. This Malagasy musical genre traces its origins to the late 1980s when the electric guitar arrived on the island country. Like many young people of the time, Damily was seduced by the instrument and used it to play African and Malagasy traditional tunes with a modern twist, thus creating what came to be known as tsapiky. For almost three decades, Damily and his eponymous band have gone from stage to stage, taking the public on a discovery of their rhythmic and charming music. AKALA SATURDAY 18 Akala has emerged from London’s hip hop underground as one of the leaders of a new British artistic renaissance. Bursting into the scene in 2004, he made history by being the first unsigned artist to have a video appear on MTV UK’s ‘TRL’ show. 2006 saw his first album ‘It’s Not A Rumour’ drop with trance-sampling smash single ‘Shakespeare’ being play-listed and championed on BBC Radio1. The album received critical acclaim and earned Akala the ‘Best Hip Hop Artist’ award at the 2006 MOBO awards. Akala’s second album ‘Freedom Lasso’ was an energetic visionary essay on modern life. His third LP ‘Doublethink’ was inspired by George Orwell’s ‘1984’. In 2013 Akala released ‘The Thieves’ Banquet’ after being inspired by Kenyan author Ngugi Wa Thiongo’s book ‘Devil On A Cross’, recorded with his live band. DR CONGO BAJOLI S UNDAY 19 Baloji is a poet, composer-lyricist/beatmaker, scriptwriter, actor and performer, video artist and stylist. After the release of his album Hotel Impala [2008], his Congolese reinterpretation [Kinshasa Succursale, 2011] was acclaimed by the world’s press after more than 200 live shows all over the world. His music stands at the crossroads of African music, rap music, the French singer-songwriter tradition, afro-american music [soul, funk, jazz] discovered through hip hop culture and sampling; and electronic music [trance, deep house] which has its roots in part in the region of Belgium where Baloji grew up. HAITI CAPE VERDE WESLI BILAN SATURDAY 18 S UNDAY 19 Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Wesli [Wesley Louissaint] built his first guitar out of an old NGO-provided oil can and nylon shoe lace when he was just eight years old. Coming from a family of 8 children where music was a daily food for the soul, it became second nature to him, a unique and vital way out of the violence and misery found in the surrounding ghetto. In an acoustic form or with his big band,Wesli consistently delivers a rich, festive and uniquely engaging sound. He conquers the heart of his audience through complex musical arrangements and universal messages of hope, truth and peace. Now residing in Canada, critics have crowned him crowned him “the strongest world creature Montreal presently has to offer internationally” Born on the island of São Vicente, Bilan always had music in his family. In 1999 he moved from his hometown in Cape Verde to Portugal to study. The first fifteen years of his new life were spent in Oporto where he recorded his first two albums [Ar/Água and Sur le Niger – a live collaboration with the Malian Kora player Sidiki Diabaté] resulting in several years of concerts around Portugal, playing with musicians from several origins and musical styles. After moving to Lisbon, Bilan was invited to some of the hottest groups of the new music scene including Meu Kamba and Cachupa Psicadélica. In 2016 he was one of the chosen artists to showcase in the Atlantic Music Expo in his home country. Alain Brunet, La Presse. TANZANIA IFA BAND SATURDAY 18 From the streets of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania to Oyé, come a nomadic band who make incredible music from broken cymbals and bass guitars made from washing lines. Ifa Band, with their close harmonies and dishevelled elegance, blend Rumba and Bongo Flava with Muziki Wa Dansi in a fresh and exciting fashion. Founded by blind guitarist Jafari Rashid Igomba, the group have gone from busking their away across Tanzania so they could reach their next gig to now playing the UK’s largest free festival of African music and culture. They will surely make their set one to remember. JAMAICA RANDY VALENTINE S UNDAY 19 Versatile singer/songwriter/producer Randy Valentine hails from the countryside of Clarendon in Jamaica. His career has been growing from strength to strength since the release of his debut mixtape ‘Bring Back The Love’ in 2012 and his R-V-LUTION Summer Tour 2013 was one of the biggest ever tours for a debut reggae artist, seeing him perform over twenty shows in more than ten countries across Europe. Randy’s second EP ‘Still Pushing’ was released in 2015, and went straight to the top of the iTunes reggae charts, confirming that Randy is no passing sensation. This music will make any audience jump and dance. A unique blend of Afro-Jazz, Sabar-Beat, and Mbalax. Driven by the frequently insane but always mesmerising, Sabar beats of world renowned Karim Mbaye. SATURDAY 18 XAM VOLO At the age of 21, Xam Volo is wise beyond his years. A true artist, he oversees every element of his music, which he describes as “a messy mind over raw, dark jazz grooves”. The London native, who has resided in Liverpool since 2012, has infused the local music scene with his unique and enigmatic take on Jazz and Soul. Mamadou Diaw is a singer, composer and master drummer from Senegal, specialising in a style of music that mixes jazz, funk, and Senegalese mbalax.
