O'Dea 680, TPL 5929 $450.00 Gardiner Green Hubbard (1822-1897) was the father of Mabel Hubbard Bell, the wife of Alexander Graham Bell. Hubbard was a patent lawyer from Cambridge Mass who had a special interest in mechanical and electrical inventions. He was also very public spirited and was President of the Clarke Institution for Deaf Mutes. It was in this role that he first met Bell. Hubbard became interested in education for the deaf through his daughter Mabel. Due to scarlet fever at age 5 she became totally and permanently deaf. He was an early advocate of oral communication being taught to deaf students. Bell’s “Visible Speech “ in deaf education was of great interest to him. They also shared an interest in telegraphy. From early on in their relationship, Hubbard became a business partner of Bell’s promoting & encouraging among other things his early work with the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell (“Sandy”) Fairchild (1906-1994) was the grandson of AGB and the great-grandson of Gardiner Green Hubbard. Mat worn along edges. $75.00 Cod was always the most abundant species and was easily dried, salted or stored in salt brine and shipped back to the Europeans as a much needed food staple. The typical fishery process consisted of large schooners about forty tons, manned by the average of five men and also many shorehands. The vessels would offload the cod for the shoremen to split and lay out the cod on the racks or, as in this photograph, on spruce bows to be dried and salted. [167]. Hayward was born in Newfoundland in either 1876 or 1879 and the first record we have for his studio was found in McAlpine's Halifax City Directory for 1923. He had studios on Gottingen, Maynard, Upper Water, Granville, Grafton, South and Buckingham Street. From 1926 -1930, the directories list him as a photographer for the Chronicle/Star newspapers, Halifax, N.S. The earliest photograph by him in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia is dated 1920 (The Governor-General and wife, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire in Sydney, N.S. July 31, 1920) and the most recent is 1950 (The Anglican Synod in May, 1950). He is mostly know for his pictures of the Royal Canadian Navy and life in Halifax during World war II. Also his series of photographs of the Navy Munitions explosion in Dartmouth on July 18, 1945 are exceptionally well done as it occurred a night. He died in December of 1950. 21 [ Schooner Books Ltd.
