San Antonio Chapter
Chartered 1958
Letter from the President
February is the month of love and this chapter
abounds with love. We all love our Spurs and
attending the game in January and hearing RC
Buford speak was a true privilege. How fortunate we
are to have Spurs Sports and Entertainment as part
of our chapter. Not only is it the month of love but it
is Rodeo time. Remember whether you are
attending a show or visiting the grounds, you are supporting a
scholarship that will go to a very deserving student.
"In life, we must not look to make ourselves happy, but instead,
we must strive to love others and our own happiness will come
of their satisfaction."
-- Paul Acquasanta
As we look forward to a wonderful February meeting at Morgan’s
Wonderland, I hope that your heart is warmed knowing how
much this fabulous park does for so many special people. I look
forward to seeing everyone there and hope you will all be able to
attend.
I
EWI!!!
Sincerely,

New Member Profile
MEMBER FIRM: SWBC
REPRESENTATIVE: Rachel Heinsohn
Rachel Heinsohn, is the Director
of Marketing for SWBC Mortgage
and Bank Division. She has been
with SWBC since June of 2014. In
her role, she manages the
advertising, client presentations
and site visits and other
marketing efforts for her
division. She joined SWBC after
a 10 month sabbatical that was the result of being laid off from her
previous firm of 13 years (Although, a challenge at first to
comprehend being out of work.)
Looking back, it was a time Rachel enjoyed being able to be more
actively involved as a mother to her 12 year old son, Joshua, and wife
to her husband of 17 years, Mark. “As women we wear many hats
and have many roles we have to play. It was nice to have the short
break to focus my attention on my two most important roles, mother
and wife.” She considers her job at SWBC to truly be a blessing. She
loves the job and the company and the opportunity to get involved
with EWI. She looks forward to meeting everyone at EWI and
working to make a difference in the lives of the women and the
community we serve.
We welcome Rachel to EWI San Antonio!

MEMBER FIRM HISTORICAL SPOTLIGHT
Submitted by Julie Lyssy (C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc.)
HISTORY OF C.H. GUENTHER & SON, INC.
1851-2014
C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. Chronology
“Celebrating 163 Years of Homemade Taste”
COMPANY HISTORY:
1851 Carl Hilmar Guenther, age 24, builds his flour mill on 150 acres of land along the banks of Live
Oak Creek in Fredericksburg, Texas, just three years after arriving in America from Weissenfels,
Germany.
1859 C.H. Guenther moves the mill to San Antonio and begins to build a stone house for his family on
the mill site. This home is known today as The Guenther House.
1860 C.H. Guenther relocates his business to San Antonio and builds a mill on the San Antonio River,
where the Company’s headquarters continue to operate today.
1897 Arthur Guenther, another son of C.H. Guenther, competed against his father by setting up his own
flour mill using the same Guenther name. C.H. Guenther countered by putting his image on each
bag of flour with the words “El Viejo,” Spanish for “The Old Man.” Due to C.H. Guenther’s clever
packaging, Arthur’s flour mill was never a serious threat again.
1898 Erhard Guenther, the founder’s youngest son, joins his father’s company, which was renamed
C.H. Guenther & Son.
1899 Erhard creates brand identities for the mill’s flour products: “Texas Pioneer” and “White
Wings” which today are still two of the Company’s most popular products.
“Texas Pioneer,” a multi-use all-purpose flour, was named to reflect his immigrant father’s
pioneer spirit.
“White Wings,” a premium refined flour, was named after the White Winged Dove which heavily
populated the central Texas area.
1902 C.H. Guenther dies at the age of 76. His son Erhard assumes control of the Company, and begins
using the trade name Pioneer Flour Mills.

COMPANY EVOLVES WITH THE CHANGING TIMES
1916 A fleet of motorized trucks replaces the original Pioneer delivery system, which began with a
single mule-drawn wagon.
1917 Responding to consumers’ ever-changing needs, the Company discontinues the use of wooden
barrels and begins packaging flour in smaller cloth sacks.
1922 A 20-story (210 ft.) grain elevator and storage facility is built. This structure still standing today
at the Company’s headquarters location, was for a short time the tallest structure in the city.
1930 During the Depression, Pioneer milled “Red Crossed Flour” from government-owned wheat,
which was distributed to needy people across the United States.
1945 Erhard Guenther dies at age 75; Adolph Beckmann, a grandson of C.H. Guenther becomes the
Company’s third president in a span of 94 years.
COMPANY CONTINUES TO RESPOND TO CONSUMERS’ NEEDS
1948 Responding to changes in the American kitchen after World War II, the Company introduces a
new line of prepared mixes, including Pioneer Biscuit Mix, Pioneer Pancake Mix, Pioneer
Cake Mix and Pioneer Cornmeal.
1954 Pioneer President Adolph Beckmann dies at 66 and is succeeded by his cousin, Ernst F.
Schuchard, 60.
1957 Ernst Schuchard retires as president and is succeeded by Alfred Beckmann.
1972 White Wings Flour Tortilla Mix, a product of Pioneer Flour Mills, outsells all competing tortilla
mixes.
1973 Alfred Beckmann resigns as president and is succeeded by Robert Schupbach, Vice President of
Sales. The company begins marketing efforts to the foodservice and restaurant industry.
1982 The family continues to lead the Company until the death of Robert Schupbach. Michael Wood,
the first non-family member to serve as president, succeeds him. Tragically, Wood dies in a small
plane crash shortly thereafter. Scott Petty, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Directors is appointed
President.
1983 “Southern Success since 1851” is adopted for Pioneer Biscuit and Baking Mix’s advertising,
and the packaging changes to emphasize that the product is cholesterol free.
1985 The Company enters the consumer gravy market, using its homemade southern cooking
expertise with the development of Old-Fashioned Country Gravy Mix, which quickly becomes
a best seller in Texas and the southern U.S.
1987 The Company acquires Texas Custom Bakers, the first move into frozen products.

1988 The Guenther House, last occupied by a Guenther family member in 1948, is restored and
opened to the public. The home now showcases a museum, store, a restaurant and banquet
facilities. Less than two miles from the Alamo, The Guenther House is located adjacent to the
King William historical neighborhood.
1992 Keeping pace with consumers’ demands for healthy eating, the Company introduces Pioneer NoFat Biscuit and Baking Mix. A couple of years later, Pioneer No-Fat Chicken, Country and
Brown Gravy Mixes are also introduced.
1995 The Company acquires The White Lily Foods Company, which sold products under the White Lily
Brand.
1999 Wanting to “umbrella” the Company’s brands along with its rich, historic past and heritage,
Pioneer Flour Mills returns to its original name C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc.
2001 Dale W. Tremblay is named President and CEO and begins to accelerate the expansion of the
Company via new product innovation and acquisitions.
2001 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. adopts a company slogan reflecting its heritage and continual
commitment to serving signature quality foods during the Company’s sesquicentennial
anniversary.
2001 The Company celebrates its 150th Anniversary with a year long schedule of community events.
2004 The Company works with the McDonald’s Corporation to develop the McGriddle breakfast
sandwich.
ACQUISITIONS ACQUIRED BY C.H. GUENTHER & SON, INC.
2004 In order to expand its frozen dough and dry mix capabilities, the Company purchases a 240,000
sq. ft. building, with 92 acres, in Prosperity, South Carolina.
2005 The Company goes international with the acquisition of the bakery assets of Golden West Foods
as a joint venture with East Balt, Inc. of Chicago. Three bun bakeries are acquired, located in
Hemel (London), England, Heywood (Manchester), England, and Olen (Brussels), Belgium.
2006 C.H. Guenther & Son, Inc. acquires the Morrison Milling Company, which is based in Denton,
Texas. The acquisition provides the Company with additional scale, capacity and capability in
the Southwest part of the U.S.
2008 The Company acquires the Williams Food Company, a branded and private label supplier of
seasonings, spice blends and gravies. The company, which was originally founded in the 1930’s
as a chili seasoning company, is a strong compliment to the companies’ Consumer business. The
business operates out of two plants in Lenexa, Kansas.
2010
Trousdale Baking Company in Banbury, England is acquired.

2012 Guenther acquires Pizza Blends – locations in Portland, OR; Kansas City, MO; Schenectady, NY
(Dry Mix) and Indianapolis, IN (Frozen). Pizza Blends acquisition strengthens Guenther’s custom
flour blending capabilities.
2013 Golden West Bakery and Gizella Pastry Ltd. in Vancouver, BC were acquired, and also Les
Boulangeries Renė in Montreal, Quebec.
2014 Guenther acquires Tribeca Oven, manufacture of frozen prebaked artisan breads in Carlstadt,
NJ.
Today, the Company operates 10 plants in the U.S. and 6 internationally. C.H. Guenther and Son,
Inc. is the oldest family-owned business in Texas and the oldest continuously-operating familyowned milling company in the United States.

Enlightening Inspiration…
WIN OR LOSE
Only one team wins the Super Bowl.
For each player on the New England Patriots going to Disney World after the game there is a player on the Seattle
Seahawks going home disappointed without the joy of victory.
It's a lot like life.
Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose.
Sometimes we win the account, the game, the job promotion, the award and sometimes we lose the very thing we
want most.
Winning matters. Losing matters. But in life what matters most is what we do with our wins and losses.
When we win do we become complacent or stay humble and hungry?
People often say that success breeds success but often it breeds complacency. After a win people think they can just
show up and achieve the same result, forgetting the effort, determination and mindset it took to achieve the win.
To continue winning it's essential to turn the euphoria of winning into a fire of burning desire that fuels your
continuous improvement, passion, and quest for excellence.
Even more important than what we do after our wins is how we respond to our losses. Do we give up or come back
stronger? Do we allow the loss to act like a cancer that eats away at us for the rest of our life or do we turn it into a
learning opportunity that leads to our healthy growth?
I certainly know what it feels like to lose. I've lost many arguments with my wife. : ) The Energy Bus was rejected by
the first 30 publishers. As a sales person years ago I lost as many accounts as I won. I lost too many games as a
Lacrosse player at Cornell and now I watch my children lose tennis matches and lacrosse games.
Everyone loses but the key is to make the loss stand for something and in my family LOSS now stands for:
LOSS (Learning Opportunity, Stay Strong)
When we lose we ask what we can learn from this loss and how we can improve because of it. Then we stay strong
and work harder to get better.
This leads to more wins in the future...and also eventually more loses...and more learning opportunities and
opportunities to stay strong and develop our character.
Through this process of winning and losing we learn the greatest lesson of all:
No matter how hard we work and how much we improve there will be times when we experience the worst of defeats
instead of the greatest of victories. But ultimately life is about more than winning or losing. It’s about the lessons we
learn, the character and strength we build and the people we become along the way.
Whether we win the Super Bowl or not, when we realize this we will surely be a winner in the game of life!
-Jon

INSPIRATIONAL READS
Submitted by Joy Box (Fernandez-Honda.)
As the daughter of an elementary school teacher, I have quite
literally been an avid reader all of my life. There are so many
authors and books that inspire me they will not fit into this
newsletter. However, I had an experience that changed my life
with books I want to share with you. In 2008 I took a job that
took me on the road. In a little under two years, I had logged a
little over 145,000 miles on my company’s vehicles. When I
took that job, my Great Aunt Pat suggested I go to the library
and get some books on CD to help pass the “windshield
time.” I loved it and the habit stuck with me. Since then I have
listened to over 500 books ranging from non-fiction to murder mystery fiction and everything and
anything the library has in between. I cannot even begin my week unless I have a couple of
different options to choose from. Our library system is so
sophisticated now that you don’t even have to go there, you just log
on and download what you want from the cloud and play it on your
electronic device and then it “disappears” back to the cloud when it
becomes due! (I still go because I don’t know how to do all of
that!) You can log on and search whatever interests you and have it
sent to the library branch nearest your home or office, check them
out for three weeks at a time, and return them to any branch in
town. If there is something you are looking for you don’t see, they
will order it for you. Oh, and it is all FREE!!! One warning, books on
CD are not rated like movies, i.e. PG or R, so be careful! There’s a
funny and somewhat embarrassing story there!
Today I have these:
The Importance of Being Extraordinary (a live lecture with Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and Eckhart Tolle)
God is Not Mad at You – Joyce Meyer
David and Goliath – Malcolm Gladwell – Underdogs, misfits, and the art of battling giants
I don’t have a lot time to sit down and turn the pages any more, but
this is the best of both worlds: I can still get in a lot of “reading”
while I’m driving to work!

Aldus Mason Espinoza was born Friday, November 14, 2014 at 5pm.
Arriving 5 weeks early, he weighed 5lbs 11oz and was 19.5 inches. Aldus just couldn’t wait to
join us! Thank God, he was perfectly healthy and did not need any NICU assistance. He has a
very sweet personality, loves to cuddle and is starting to find his voice! Lots of coos and little
giggles! Mom had no idea motherhood would be THIS GOOD!

FEBRUARY PET OF THE MONTH
Submitted by Cindy Vyvlecka & Valerie Manns
Our featured pet for the month of February is Miss Gracie Buck who
belongs to Linda Buck with Herff Travel. She is a West Highland Terrier
(Westie) and is a true Spurs fan sporting her Tim Duncan jersey! Linda
says Miss Gracie Buck was adopted from a client and “lives the good life”.
With Linda as a mom we’re sure she
does! When not hanging out with her
friends at K9 Country Camp she likes to
lounge and play dress up.
