I would like to highlight three that are, in my opinion, closely linked to its activities. Putting our resources to work for human benefit is undoubtedly the first reason. Companies have a social responsibility to the communities in which they operate, and we have chosen to fulfil this obligation through the Altran Foundation for Innovation. Practicing our core competency – innovation – is the Altran Foundation’s second pillar. We contribute our strongest expertise to tackling the most demanding technological challenges, in order to ensure the success of the projects we support. Lastly, the Foundation could not exist without the commitment of the men and women who, enthusiastically and with conviction, contribute their talents to promoting it and helping it to succeed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hundreds of colleagues, both from within the Altran Group and from elsewhere, who lend their support to the Foundation each year. Let me also stress the vital contributions made by the Scientific Council and the Jury as regards the Foundation’s deliberations, decisions and selection of laureates. The Foundation has fulfilled its mission since its creation in 1996. The pages that follow illustrate the actions taken, as well as the challenges facing society, the innovation required for those challenges to be met, and the diverse skills on which the success of our projects depends. I hope that the Altran Foundation will continue to move forward by adapting to an ever-changing environment, while at the same time upholding its mission of promoting technological innovation for human benefit through the talents of its staff. The Altran Foundation is a vehicle for civic commitment, seeking to mobilise the Group’s resources around creative and innovative projects. The Altran Foundation has achieved wide recognition in the world of corporate philanthropy. At the ADMICAL* philanthropy awards in 2006, it won the Fondation de France Award for the originality and sustainability of its efforts. The Foundation also won the ADMICAL Special Jury Award in 2002. *Association pour le Développement du Mécénat Industriel et Commercial, a corporate philanthropy association international scientific award The Altran Foundation for Innovation’s efforts are centred on an international award recognising a technological innovation in the public interest. The award theme changes every year. Past topics have included memory and heritage, pain control, access to water, food safety, improving living conditions in urban areas, developing countries, early childhood, the sciences, overcoming social exclusion, energy and health. This annual competition is open to candidates in countries with Altran offices, and the jury that selects the winner of the Altran Foundation Award is completely independent of the company. 4 sponsoring through expertise The Altran Foundation is a pioneer in sponsoring innovation projects. It offers winning projects one year of support by Group engineers. This assistance draws on Altran’s entire scope of expertise in the field of research and scientific innovation, including the development of innovative technologies, industrialisation, intellectual property, project management, cost optimisation and the selection of partners. With this expert support, many laureates have a unique opportunity to give shape to their ideas and transform their project into an industrial reality. staff involvement The Altran Foundation is a vehicle for promoting the expertise of Altran engineers. Every year, over 400 employees contribute to Foundation efforts by disseminating the call for entries, coaching and short-listing candidates, and assisting the award winner. www.altran-foundation.org “ 1997 Human history and artefacts - 1998 Pain, deficiency and physical handicap - 1999 Water quality and water access - 2000 Food quality and safety - 2001 Improving living conditions in urban areas - 2002 Developing countries - 2003 Early childhood - 2004 Discovering, understanding and enjoying Science - 2005 Social integration - 2006 Energy – 2007 Mending the human body 2008 Reducing CO2 levels in the Atmosphere: our technological challenge! This composite material stores the carbon absorbed by the bamboo and requires, for its fabrication, a little energy, water and materials (wood, bricks, metal, etc.). In addition, its production requires smaller machines and little transportation as the plantations are located close to the final user. The goal of this project is to develop local economies based on small companies’ networks using this technology. It’s about an innovative technology combining social and economical development, respect of the environment and carbon storage. 6 the finalists OLIVIER LÉPINE, FRANCE ALGOSOURCE TECHNOLOGIES COMPANY, PARTNERSHIP WITH JCL ENVIRONNEMENT, AND THE GEPEA/CNRS LABORATORY ALGOSOURCE TECHNOLOGIES This technology uses micro-algae to capture the CO2 produced by industrial activities and produces vegetable biomass, a sustainable resource replacing fossil resources. 7 CHRISTIAN MULLER, FRANCE COOLTECH APPLICATIONS COMPANY MAGCOOL The goal of this project is to develop, for housing uses, a new system of reversible air-conditioning based on the magneto-caloric effect: it saves energy without using a fluid emitting greenhouse gases. Through technology and innovation, the Altran Foundation seeks to reduce suffering and democratise treatment to put it within reach of as many people as possible.” Marc VAINSEL, MEMBER OF THE SCIENTIFIC BOARD 2005 / I THINK, THEREFORE I CAN Patients with locked-in syndrome have no means of communicating with their environment. By recording brainwaves at the surface of the skull, then decoding them, Professor Jonathan Wolpaw’s Brain Computer Interface system enables patients to move a cursor on a computer screen, dictate a text or control a robotic arm. This invention is an extraordinary communications breakthrough for people who are completely cut off from the outside world. Thanks to the support provided by Altran consultants, the first patient was equipped with this system and was able to write and send an e-mail without any help. Some 15 patients are now using this system, which is set to be rolled out in Europe. Altran’s assistance was extremely valuable. The consultants’ support significantly accelerated the technological development of the BCI system. And the new skills they contributed helped us turn the project into a reality. Jonathan WOLPAW, 2005 LAUREATE, UNITED STATES “ 8 9 2007 / FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT “ www.altran-foundation.org Today, 1.5 million people suffer from degenerative retinal diseases. The gravity of the situation prompted Professor José Sahel and his team at the QuinzeVingts National Ophthalmology Hospital Centre to develop an artificial retina that restores hope to affected patients. Placed under the existing retina, it directly stimulates the neurons, replacing defective cells. These implants should eventually allow patients to recognise faces, read large print and move independently in a restricted environment. For one year, Altran consultants laid the foundations of an industrial project and improved the system through their work in the following areas: optimisation of laboratory tests, digital simulation of the neuron-implant connection, system design and intellectual property. Altran supported the project by providing its expertise throughout the process-from prototype design to the creation of the industrial product. This collaboration increased the project’s competitive edge worldwide and fostered the development of a high-performing retinal prosthesis for the blind. José SAHEL, 2007 LAUREATE, FRANCE www.altran-foundation.org FOCUS ON SOCIETY making a commitment to the environment “Every day, the media discuss the environmental problems of global warming, deforestation, waste management, air pollution, oil slicks and soil erosion caused by humans’ growing impact on the planet. The Altran Foundation has decided to get involved in environmental issues, not because it’s the fashionable thing to do, but because the Group can help overcome these problems.” Wolf Peter FEHLHAMMER, MEMBER OF THE SCIENTIFIC BOARD 2006 / ENERGY: WASTE NOT WANT NOT “ 10 Cost is one of the main obstacles to the development of solar energy. To overcome this problem, the company Maxxun BV has developed an innovative system of solar collectors based on luminescent solar concentrator technology. The goal is to more than halve the investment currently required. Altran’s support resulted in an overview of subsidy opportunities and endorsement of the Dutch government’s partnership proposal, leading to funding of €1 million. At the same time, Altran teams worked to optimise light transmission towards the system’s photovoltaic element, thereby increasing efficiency. They also developed reflective thin-film deposition, leading to the creation of the first prototype. 11 Our team enjoyed extensive support from the Altran consultants. We especially appreciated their advice and strong involvement in our projects. Maxxun BV is growing rapidly, mainly fuelled by sales of our solar system, and that was largely made possible by Altran. Kees BASTIAANSEN, 2006 PROJECT MANAGER, NETHERLANDS 2001 / CREATIVE URBAN REGENERATION Soil decontamination, an essential aspect of sustainable development, has a significant impact on the outlook for land use planning and urban renewal. Laureate Julien Troquet developed a biotechnology-based system in which pollutants are completely broken down by microorganisms. This process preserves the ecosystem, maintains the site in its current state without disrupting business, and makes it possible to reclaim contaminated industrial sites at one-fifth the cost of the usual decontamination techniques. Altran’s technological support resolved many technical problems and helped move the process from the laboratory to the industrial level. Biobasic Environnement is now an established environmental consulting company in Europe that works with clients on a long-term basis. What a breath of fresh air to be able to count on Altran consultants. Every time we needed some help, whether it had to do with technology, the market or sales, we could send out a message in a bottle, and the Altran Foundation would be there. Julien TROQUET, 2001 LAUREATE, FRANCE www.altran-foundation.org “ www.altran-foundation.org FOCUS ON SOCIETY making a commitment to international solidarity “Funding is not the only way to help the most disadvantaged populations. By combining technology, scientific expertise and empathy as a means of support, the Altran Foundation chooses to back projects that can have a tangible impact on developing societies.” Edith ACKERMANN, MEMBER OF THE SCIENTIFIC BOARD 1999 / TAPPING THE OCEAN How can everyone gain access to water? Water desalination is one solution. Viviane Renaudin and her team, based at the International Water Centre in Nancy, are developing an innovative seawater desalination station. This system features horizontal transfer of vapour to the condensation zone, which makes it highly energy efficient. Thanks to its human scale, modular design and ease of assembly, it is universally accessible and user-friendly. By the time the Altran consultants were ending their support, the process’s technical feasibility had been demonstrated and the first drops of distilled water were flowing from the desalination prototype. The project team’s current goal is to install the system in an industrial setting. A year later, we received funding from the European Union* for a project with seven European partners. Three descriptions sum up my feelings about the Altran Foundation: project accelerator, wide-ranging expertise and continuous support. Viviane RENAUDIN, 1999 LAUREATE, FRANCE * FP5: Framework programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities “ 12 13 2002 / BECAUSE THE WORLD NEEDS MANKIND www.altran-foundation.org “ Deforestation is one of the major consequences of developing countries’ need for energy. To meet this challenge, Guy Reinaud offers an alternative source of energy: biomass or “green” charcoal. Such charcoal produces a low-cost, eco-friendly and universally available fuel from any type of organic material, such as straw, branches, plant waste and rice husk. It is derived from a process similar to that used for producing wood charcoal. Altran’s support was instrumental in doubling production capacity, cutting production costs in half and decreasing the biomass charcoal’s temperature from 500°C to 40°C at the end of the process to avoid any danger. After several tests, the first pilot project was implemented in South Africa and Senegal with the installation of the Pyro 7 machine. Today, the project hopes to expand to the rest of Africa, and the association is working on a new version that is 10 times more powerful – the Pyro 8. We absolutely needed the brainpower and a team to help us get ready for the industrialisation of the process. I especially appreciated the involvement of Altran consultants, who were motivated by the cause. “ Guy REINAUD, 2002 LAUREATE, FRANCE www.altran-foundation.org ANDREAS KUHN - THOMAS GAUTHERON - ELISE CHOULET - ADRIEN LEMOINE - AMANDINE CLERC - BÉNÉDICTE CORRIVAUD - CAREN HOCHHEIMER - FRANÇOIS LADSOUS - PIERRE GEORGES SCHMIEDER - RAPHAËLLE SAINTE MARIE - EDUARDO TUCCI - FRANÇOIS HOUDU FOCUS ON SOCIETY - GHISLAIN GOURE - JEAN-PAUL JONQUERES - LÉONORE COUSIN - LORRAINE DAVIES - LUCIE MACIASZEK - MANUEL HAJ SALEH - MA- making a commitment to science NUELE SANZA - MARC VAINSEL - MARIE-CÉLINE ROBIN - MARTIN REISER - NATHALIE DOS REIS - NICOLAS MAYER - OLIVIER DENARNAUD - OLIVIER SIMON - PIERRE TAMBOURIN - RÉMI LANCIEN - RICHARD MILLS - SAMUEL BYLL - VÉRONIQUE GENKIN - VINCENT FAVAT - ANA LUIZA ARNAUD - ANDRÉ GOUAZE - ANNE-LAURE SANGUINETTI - APHRODITE MICHALI - AUDREY DONVAL - BERTRAND CORRETJA - CHRISTELLE VRIET - DOMINIC HÖLTGEN - EDWARD MAAS - FALKO BUSSE - FLORENT LE SAOUT - FRÉDÉRIC CHAMBONNET - GÉRARD DAVID - GUILLAUME RECORDET - INGRID ROBIN - ISABELLE FOUGERAS - JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC URVOY - ASUN MATEU - CHRISTOPHE MORAWSKI - DAMIEN GAUDEN - DIEDERIK JASPERS - ELODIE LABAT - EMILIE BRULOIS - FLORENT COLLET - FRANCISCO JAVIER GÓMEZ OTERO - FRAN- “Scientific research has two major objectives: to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and, in so doing, to drive technological development. The goal of the HISPARC project is to involve students in the different stages of scientific research while providing an initial teamwork experience. During the first stage, groups of secondary school students and researchers create a network of ultra-high energy cosmic particle detectors. The data is then retrieved by the participating schools and made available to the scientists. Altran consultants worked on the databases and electronic measurement system.
