About the
Associated Board
Who’s Who
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music is a
charitable company established for the benefit of music
education by four Royal Schools of Music in the UK:
Patron
Her Majesty The Queen
Royal Academy of Music
Royal College of Music
Royal Northern College of Music
Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama
The Associated Board’s core activity is the operation of an
authoritative and internationally recognized system of
exams and assessments to encourage and motivate players
and singers at all levels through the provision of goals and
the measurement of progress.
As the world leader in its field, the Associated Board
conducts over 650,000 music exams each year in more
than 90 countries.
ABRSM Publishing is one of the UK’s leading music
publishers, whose publications support the exams, provide
additional repertoire and contribute to music education.
The Associated Board also provides professional
development services for instrumental and singing teachers
through its widely acclaimed Certificate of Teaching (CT
ABRSM) course and a range of other courses, seminars
and workshops.
Our principal objective is to maintain and develop the
services and products that we provide to music teachers
and students to the highest standards. We also seek to play
a significant role in influencing political debate in favour of
music education.

Chief Executive’s
Statement
Associated Board Scholars Christoff Fourie and Ancuta Nite
As will be evident from subsequent sections of this Annual
Review, the Associated Board’s work continued to expand
strongly during 2006. Exam entries worldwide reached a
new record level of around 650,000. This means that the
Associated Board is now serving 25% more candidates
than it did ten years ago. Sales of publications at around
£5 million were markedly up on the previous year,
primarily due to the publication of the biennial Selected
Piano Exam Pieces. This masked what was generally a
tough UK marketplace, in which conventional distribution
channels are being reshaped to take account of changing
trends in the supply of both print and online products.

Developing the syllabus
Syllabus and publishing developments continued hand-inhand during the year in a variety of contexts: new jazz flute
exams and materials were launched in September; CD
recordings of syllabus pieces for saxophone, bassoon and
oboe were created for the first time; the Music Medals
programme was expanded; and, in another new initiative at
the end of the year, we published Model Answers to the
past theory papers at Grades 1 to 5.

Supporting teachers and learners
Throughout the year the Associated Board reinforced its
role as the key supplier to, and supporter of, the individual
music teacher and learner. A glance at our journal Libretto
or at the Teachers section of our website at www.abrsm.org
shows the growing number of courses, seminars and
professional development programmes being offered
throughout the world. The Music Medals programme is
expanding to reach more and more teachers, who benefit
not only from the assessment of their group-taught pupils
but also in developing their own skills as teacher-assessors.
Our work on increasing access to all our exams gathered
pace in 2006 with the issue of further guidelines and
specimen tests for candidates with sight or hearing
impairments. Furthermore, the Associated Board is now
established as the principal forum in the UK for teachers
and learners to discuss music education issues, with our
websites hosting around one million visits during the
past year.
International focus
Steady growth in international markets continued
throughout the year, despite the adverse effects of sterling’s
increased strength against the US dollar. Expanded exam
and professional development activity in our major markets
in South East Asia was matched by new initiatives around
the world. The USA has seen particularly good growth in
recent years and this was celebrated at a national
Representatives’ Conference in September. New contacts
were established in a range of central European countries
and arrangements were put in place for a European
Representatives’ Conference in 2007. In March I had the
particular pleasure of attending a superb New Zealand
Representatives’ Conference led by our New Zealand
Administrator Heather Gummer, with Larry Westland of
Music for Youth as guest speaker.
New initiatives
New music and new technology were both strongly in
evidence during 2006. Our SoundJunction website
achieved seven major awards for innovation, creativity and
educational importance, while ABRSM Publishing launched
Spectrum for Clarinet, a collection of specially
commissioned contemporary pieces for clarinet and piano.
Meanwhile, research and development continued on Music
Medals for electronic keyboard and on the potential for a
drum kit syllabus.
Breadth of mission
One of the great joys of working for the Associated Board
is the breadth of its mission and the range of skills that it
embraces and demands. This is evidenced in so many ways
every year: in the balance of rational and emotional
responses required of examiners, an extraordinary skill
honed through training and years of experience; in the
balance of professional and administrative skills on which
success in the achievement of our charitable mission
depends; in the combination of editorial and business skills
within ABRSM Publishing; most of all, of course, in the
musical performances which are integral to our work,
including those celebrated in High Scorers’ Concerts and,
in 2006, at our Scholars’ Concert at the Royal Academy of
Music.
There is always a danger that such diversity may lead to a
loss of coherence both within the Associated Board and in
external perceptions of our work. For this reason we have
increased the emphasis on integration between different
departments, leading to some changes in our organizational
structure in 2007. Alongside this, we have begun a
comprehensive branding review, which will involve
considerable consultation with both internal and external
stakeholders and will continue throughout the current year.
Looking outwards
2006 was a particularly active year for the Associated
Board in the wider field of music education, particularly in
the light of the UK’s Music Manifesto and forthcoming
Comprehensive Spending Review. While strongly
supporting plans to increase universal access to musical
experience, the Associated Board has constantly argued the
case for ensuring the provision of sustained, progressive

tuition for all those young people who demonstrate a wish
or an aptitude to further their instrumental and vocal
studies. In so doing we have emphasized that music
education is a continuum from very first access through to
the highest levels of professional performance. As an
examining body naturally concerned with sustained,
progressive learning, and yet at the same time encouraging
open access for all, the Associated Board is well placed to
act as an advocate for the uniting of these potentially
divisive music education interests.
In closing, I would like not only to thank most warmly all
those who have contributed in their different ways to the
well-being of the Associated Board and its mission over the
past year, but also to celebrate and further encourage the
collaborative and holistic mindset which is essential in
serving the music educational needs of all young people in
the future.

Message from
the Chairman
I did not have to be asked twice. When I was approached
about the possibility of becoming non-executive Chairman
of the Associated Board, the positives effortlessly outweighed the negatives. Yes, there would be more meetings
to add to the list, but these meetings were focused round a
single theme: how to help maintain and enhance the quality
of musical performance in this country and overseas.
I appreciate the way in which I have been made to feel
welcome, and even more I appreciate the legacy which I
have inherited from my exemplary predecessor, John Baker.
I also express my profound thanks to the examiners,
representatives, course leaders and mentors who, during the
last year, have made such an important contribution to the
work of the Associated Board and who continue to do so.
I had in the past had opportunity to defend and declare the
role of the Royal Schools of Music to the Higher Education
Funding Council, and through them to the government.
Here was an opportunity to add such weight as I have to
the wider role of musical education and assessment.
That said, I stress that my role is non-executive. It will be
easier to keep it that way and to resist the temptation to
meddle unnecessarily because I have found myself working
with a lively executive team whose combined experience
gives integrity and strength to the organization.
My first impression as I met the executive team and then
the Board, was the common purpose of commitment to
excellence as the arbiter of policy, decision and action. This
reaction was quickly complemented by a growing
awareness that innovation where appropriate was also part
of the texture of the organization. Richard Morris and his
team, as well as the principals of the Royal Schools, look to
the future as well as build on the past.

Chairman
One great opportunity which does just that is the
development of the international reach of the Associated
Board. The British economy more widely has transformed
itself into one of the international leaders in providing
services overseas. The Associated Board has learned how to
do this over the years, and it has done so without
compromising on need for the highest quality and
standards. Great possibilities lie ahead.

Exams and

Pupils from Worcestershire Music Service
One of the largest projects during the year
was the creation of new tests for candidates
with special needs: Braille Memory, Aural
Repetition and Alternatives to the Aural
Tests for all instruments. This involved
writing and moderating thousands of
instrument-specific tests across the grades,
which were published at the end of the year.

Graded exams
2006 was an important year for our piano,
singing and jazz syllabuses, and for access
issues. In January we began a major review
of the sight-reading and scale elements of
the piano syllabus. The review, which
involved wide ranging consultation, will
result in a significant revision of these
requirements with effect from 2009. During
the year we also published a new piano
syllabus for 2007 and 2008, featuring new
repertoire lists and supported by recordings
and books of Selected Exam Pieces.
Music Medals
We continued to develop resources in
support of our Music Medals assessments
for group-taught pupils. The repertoire lists
for all twenty instruments were updated to
include recently published materials and we
produced new volumes of ensemble
repertoire for groups of mixed brass
instruments and bass clef brass instruments.
Our Music Medals Trainers’ Conference in
March brought together 60 teachers from
UK Music Services who have been involved
in training their colleagues to use the
assessments. This was a valuable

Encouraging
Excellence
Scholarships and prizes
Through a range of scholarships,
bursaries and prizes we encourage and
reward the achievements of young
musicians.
Scholarships were awarded to 20
students starting junior, undergraduate
and postgraduate courses at four Royal
Schools of Music. These musicians come
from Australia, Romania, Singapore,
South Africa, the UK and the USA, and
between them are studying the cello,
violin, viola, flute, clarinet, french horn,
trombone, bagpipes, organ, piano
accompaniment, singing and percussion.
In addition, four Macklin Bursaries
provided funds for existing scholars as
they continued their studies or launched
professional careers.
For candidates taking graded exams a
number of awards are made on an
annual basis. Well over 400 prizes and
awards were given to candidates who
achieved high marks in theory and
practical exams during 2006. At
diploma level, successful candidates in
South East Asia and Hong Kong
celebrated their achievements at
Diploma Award Ceremonies in
Singapore and Hong Kong.
Performance opportunities
Thousands of young musicians around
the world took part in High Scorers’
Concerts. These events give students
who have excelled in their exams the
opportunity to celebrate their
achievements with family, friends,
teachers and local communities. They
also provide valuable performance
experience for learners of all ages, and
at all levels, from Prep Test to diploma.
In the UK and Ireland, Honorary Local
Representatives organized 20 High
Scorers’ Concerts taking place in Bolton,
Bangor, Bridgend, Chippenham,
Darlington, Doncaster, Dublin, the Isle of
Man, Northampton, Paignton, Sunburyon-Thames, Swansea and Taunton.
Concerts were also organized by our
Representatives in France, Grenada, India,
Indonesia, Jamaica, Korea, Kuwait,
Malaysia, Malta, Malaysia, the
Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South
Africa, Sri Lanka, the United States and
Uganda.
For young musicians studying on
Associated Board scholarships at the
four Royal Schools of Music, our
Scholars’ Concert at the Royal Academy
of Music in October provided a
showcase for their considerable talents.
During the concert, talented students
from China, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia,
South Africa and the UK performed a
rich and varied selection of music for
harp, piano, cello, violin and voice.

Publishing
The publishing programme for 2006 was dominated by the
issue of a new piano syllabus and the relevant supporting
materials. However, there was also a major expansion of
recording activity – a notable development during the year
- and there were some interesting innovations. The latest
addition to the Spectrum series came along in October –
Spectrum for Clarinet. And, for the first time, Theory of
Music Model Answers were published for Grades 1 to 5,
providing a helpful and practical resource for teachers and
pupils preparing for theory exams. Overall, 182 titles,
including 143 sales titles, were produced in the year. In
addition, the Production Department prepared 125 printed
items for various Associated Board departments.
New titles
The key publishing event was the release of the new Selected
Piano Exam Pieces 2007-2008. The usual package of eight
graded albums, eight sets of CDs containing the complete
syllabus selection, and the Teaching Notes for Grades 1 to 7,
was supplemented this year by two innovations. With
Roland UK, we produced MIDI files of the Selected Piano
Exam Pieces for Grades 1 to 5. For those using Roland
digital pianos, the files facilitated separate-hands and slow
practice. We also provided ringtones of a number of pieces,
allowing students to show off their favourite piano exam
piece on their mobile phones.
Spectrum for Clarinet followed the model of Spectrum for
Cello, with 16 pieces, two at each grade, from a mixture of
well-known and up-and-coming composers. The pieces
were chosen by Ian Mitchell who also contributed a superb
CD of all the pieces with the initiator of the Spectrum
series, Thalia Myers, at the piano.

2,138,078 ABRSM Publishing titles sold in 2006
As well as recordings of piano exam pieces and the
Spectrum clarinet works, CDs of syllabus pieces for oboe,
bassoon and saxophone were released for the first time.
Through this initiative we hoped to encourage the take-up
of exams for these instruments by helping students and
teachers to choose their pieces, and then to prepare for the
exam using the minus-one piano tracks. These recordings
were warmly welcomed by the wind teaching community.
There were significant additions to both the jazz and Music
Medals syllabuses. Jazz flute for Grades 1 to 5 was greeted
with great acclaim by teachers and the music press and
there was universal praise in reviews of our new books of
Music Medals Ensemble Pieces for brass.
Sales and marketing
The major development in this area was the appointment
of our very first ABRSM Publishing Sales Executive.
Promoting our catalogue directly to UK and Ireland dealers
has had an immediate and positive impact on levels of sales
and on our relationship with retailers. Publishing staff also
made promotional tours to Spain, Germany, Australia, New
Zealand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and
Japan, and attended conferences and exhibitions in New
York, Frankfurt, Portland (Oregon), Shanghai and
Birmingham.
“Jazz Flute has

most exciting music

Finally, a vast selection of specimen tests for candidates
with special needs was developed and issued for all

Professional
Development
We continued to support instrumental and
singing teachers around the world by
providing a varied programme of
professional development courses,
workshops and seminars. Well over 3,000
teachers took part in a professional
development event during the year, ranging
from one-day seminars dealing with a
single topic, such as jazz or piano
repertoire, to longer courses that
encourage participants to reflect on and
develop all aspects of their teaching.
Three core courses
Through our three core professional
development courses we gave teachers, at
all stages of their careers, opportunities to
deepen their knowledge of teaching and
learning. In 2006 our Introduction to
Instrumental and Vocal Teaching
workshops in Edinburgh, Leeds, London
and Manchester offered guidance to over
100 musicians considering a career in
teaching, while the four-day Teaching
Music Effectively courses in Bristol gave
practising teachers a chance to refresh and
add to their existing skills, with an
intervening period of study and mentoring
to enrich this experience. The one-year,
part-time CT ABRSM course continued to
provide teachers in the UK and Hong
Kong with an opportunity to spend an
extended period of time exploring,
developing and reflecting on their teaching
with the input of specialist mentors. As in
previous years, a fast-track version of the
course in the UK provided an intensive,
but no less effective, route to the highly
regarded Certificate of Teaching
qualification.
“The mentors
were brilliant and
the group was
amazing.
I have learnt such
a lot from this
experience.”

For CT ABRSM holders we are now providing special
opportunities for further study. In April, members of the
Hong Kong CT ABRSM Alumni Association attended a
session on contemporary piano music and jazz, and in
November CT ABRSM holders in the UK enjoyed seminars
on performance preparation and rhythm games
in teaching, held in collaboration with the Royal Northern
College of Music.

Finding the right course
Embarking on one of our longer professional development
courses requires a considerable amount of commitment.
Regular Tasters and Open Mornings provide teachers with
a clear idea of what to expect, and in 2006 more than 100
teachers attended one of these events around the UK - in
Exeter, Kenilworth, London, Manchester and Oxford - and
in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Working with Music Services
The Development Department has maintained its strong
links with Music Services, who provide much of the
instrumental and singing tuition in the UK. During the year
we worked with Music Services in Angus, Derby, Cornwall,
Liverpool, Hertfordshire, London and Wiltshire to provide
tailor-made professional development for their teachers.
Group teaching, assessment, motivation and planning were
just some of the topics covered.
One-day events
For teachers in the UK wanting to expand their horizons
and take a first step towards teaching jazz, we ran a series
of Jazz Taster Days in November. More than 120
participants enjoyed an inspiring introduction to the basics
of teaching jazz, as well as a taste of what to expect on the
four-day jazz courses taking place in early 2007. And for
piano teachers, we held a series of seminars introducing
pieces from the new 2007 and 2008 piano syllabus. Over
1,000 teachers attended one of these events at venues in
Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, London and Manchester.
Professional Development Programme
Our annual Professional Development Programme
attracted more than 1,800 teachers in Hong Kong, Macau,
Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. During March,
April, August and September we held sixteen seminars
which focused on piano exams at Grades 6 to 8, repertoire
from the new piano syllabus, aural skills, and integrated
approaches to teaching theory. Malaysia was also the
location for our 2006 Professional Development
Conference attended by delegates from Australia, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. With a theme of
Classics, Comfort and Cocktails, teachers at this weekend
conference explored both traditional and more jazz
inspired piano repertoire, as well as learning how to avoid
performance related injuries.
Courses in Italy
In Europe, teachers in Milan and Rome attended two-day
courses covering subjects such as Dalcroze, Kodály,
improvisation, composition and aural skills. The courses
were made possible by our Centenary Travel Grant Scheme
which funds professional development opportunities for
teachers around the world.

Working
with Others
Building relationships with a wide range of
music education organizations is one of the
ways in which we support all those
involved in the teaching and learning of
music. Activity ranges from providing
sponsorship, to attending and participating
in conferences around the world.
Sponsorship
Our continued support for Music for Youth
helped to ensure that young musicians
throughout England and Wales had access
to performance opportunities via the Music
for Youth Regional Festival Series. Around
50,000 young musicians, at all levels and
playing in groups of all styles, took part in
one of these unique events during February
and March. Through our sponsorship of the
Federation of Music Services we also
supported the work of Music Services and
their teachers, who provide instrumental
and singing tuition around the UK.
Towards the end of the year we
established a sponsorship programme with
the charity CLIC Sargent, designed to help
with the promotion of their fundraising

part in this event commit to practising

sponsorship money which goes towards
improving the lives of young people in the

“The cornerstone of our work in music education is the Regional Festival
Series - sixty or so inspiring days of young people playing every conceivable
kind of music. None of this would be possible without the support and
backing of the Associated Board.”
Larry Westland CBE, Music for Youth founder and Executive Director
European Council of International Schools were just some
of the international events we attended, whilst in the UK
we exhibited at conferences of the Federation of Music
Services, the Music Masters’ and Mistresses’ Association,
the British Association of Symphonic Band and Wind
Ensembles, the National Association of Music Educators,
the Scottish Association of Music Educators, and the
Heads of Instrumental Teaching in Scotland.
We gave presentations on SoundJunction, as part of the
International Society for Music Education conference in
Malaysia, and on the new jazz flute syllabus, at the British
Flute Society conference, and we launched our latest
volume of contemporary music, Spectrum for Clarinet, at
the Clarinet and Saxophone Society conference.
Focusing on learners rather than teachers, we were
involved with two summer schools. We sponsored the UK’s
first Electronic Keyboard Summer School, in association
with National Electronic Keyboard Courses, and ran a
summer school for young pianists from Hong Kong, in
association with The King’s School, Ely.

Obituaries
Carys Arwyn Evans, HLR
for Bangor, died in June
2006. Her contribution
during her 23 years was
remarkable. She was wellknown and well-loved in
her local community, both
through her management
of the centre and her
enthusiasm for organizing
High Scorers’ Concerts.
Velma Gumbs was our
Representatives for St
Kitts from 2002 until her
death in December 2006.
Velma was one of St Kitts'
foremost church organists
and a dedicated primary,
secondary and adult
education teacher working
for the Ministry of
Education.
Hester MacQueen, HLR for
Birmingham from 2000
until her retirement in the
summer of 2006, died in
January 2007. During her
six years as HLR, Mrs
MacQueen always ensured
the best possible
arrangements for
candidates taking their
exams, whether they
attended the practical,
theory or diploma centre.
