About The Arts House
Director’s Message Fresh from the success of our two major translation events in May
(the Literary Translation Boot Camp and Singapore International
Translation Symposium), we now turn our attention to bridging
cultures. It is not as lofty as it sounds. Rather, it takes the simple act of
listening and having a conversation. There is no better way to have
this exchange than through the realms of literature and the arts. Join
us as we seek to understand our neighbours better through through
two key programmes, CausewayEXchange and the Asia Pacific
Writers & Translators 7th Annual Conference.
We first started CausewayEXchange, or CEX, in 2010 with DMR
Productions. The aim was simple: to showcase artists and writers from
both Singapore and Malaysia, and to promote more collaborations
across the causeway. Each country takes turns to host every other
year, and the festival has since taken Singapore artists to Kuala
Lumpur and Penang. As CEX turns five this year, it is heartening
to know that audiences continue to want to be engaged in this
conversation. With 10 days of performances, exhibitions and events,
the festival promises to give us even greater insight into the psyche of
Malaysia (page 3 to 5).
In conjunction with CEX, our World Lit programme will also have a
Malaysian Writers Focus. We are very excited to welcome the muchloved cartoonist Lat; award-winning fiction, non-fiction writer and
poet Dina Zaman; and novelist Yangsze Choo, who made a splash
with her debut novel The Ghost Bride, among other writers. Make a
date with them as they take part in talks and workshops (page 7).
Equally exciting is the Asia Pacific Writers & Translators 7th Annual
Conference, which will be taking place in Singapore for the first
time this July (page 2). Held in Bangkok for the past couple of years,
the conference gathers writers and translators from Asia Pacific
and beyond together to compare notes, understand each other’s
writing culture and challenges, and connect. The theme this year is
'Bridging Cultures: Creative Writing and Literary Translation in Asia
Today', and will feature close to 100 writers and translators from
Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines and many
more countries.
These programmes are only the tip of our effort to engage writers
and artists from the region as part of our intercultural conversations.
We invite you to join us as we strive to know our neighbours better
through the power of words and the arts.

Held for the first time in Singapore, the Asia Pacific Writers and
Translators Association Conference brings together poets, novelists,
short-story writers, translators of creative literature and those who’d
like to be published one day.
This year, the conference explores the theme ‘Bridging Cultures:
Creative Writing and Literary Translation in Asia Today’ with key
note addresses delivered by Singaporean author Suchen Christine
Lim on 17 July; Filipino author-playwright Merlinda Bobis on 18 July;
and controversial Australian author/translator Linda Jaivin on 19 July.

Serenade Malaysia presents a wide variety of music genres using
traditional instruments like tangunggak, sompoton, bungkau and
gendang. Their repertoire comprises English and international
songs, famous classic Malay songs by P. Ramlee and Saloma,
and traditional Sabahan tunes with a touch of jazz, headed by
bamboo saxophonist Philipus Jani. The orchestra has expanded to
more than 200 musicians and has performed at renowned music

Born in 1954 in Johor Bahru, Malaysian artist Tang Juey Lee is a
highly prolific painter. A special painting in the exhibition entitled
Friendship was specially commissioned for this occasion and has
significance for the artist. The painting bears both countries’ national
flowers: hibiscus, or "Bunga Raya", and Vanda “Miss Joaquim”. The
two species of intertwined flowers coupled with a row of perched
budgerigars compliments the scene and adds liveliness to the
harmony of the composition. The painting symbolises the long-term
cordiality and prosperity of an enduring friendship between two
countries where Tang spent many of his formative years.

Sabah: The Land Below The Wind is a collaborative work between
photographers from Singapore and Malaysia which features some
of the most amazing photos taken during a recent Borneo trip.

side of Malaysia – the people, the arts, and the culture.

Malaysian sculptor Jayshree is exhibiting nine figurines made
of grass which depicts various postures that represent the
environmental friendly “Earth Society”, and another nine made
of GI wire representing the rigid “Metal Society”, to show the
differences between these two “societies”. The idea came from
the artist’s concern about the current lifestyle and behaviour of the
society around her that seemed more static – inseparable from their
technologies and electronic devices.

Come meet Lat, the father of contemporary Malaysia cartoons, as
well as other notable Malaysian writers such as award-winning
non-fiction, fiction and poetry writer Dina Zaman, and up-andcoming novelist Yangsze Choo.
In conjunction with CausewayEXchange, The Arts House casts the
spotlight on writers from our neighbour Malaysia. Our World Lit
programme will celebrate the best of Malaysian literature and help
us gain a better understanding of our neighbours through their works.
Presenting a series of talks and panel discussions over three days,
you can look forward to meeting both established and emerging
Malaysian writers, including Lat. Best known for The Kampong Boy,
which has been translated and published worldwide and made
into an award-winning TV series, Lat will meet his fans and share
his insights on the art of cartoons.

Satirical and sympathetic, political and personal, Jolene Tan’s
debut novel A Certain Exposure traces the adolescences of twin
brothers Andrew and Brian, culminating in the explosive events
leading to Andrew’s tragic death. Praised as having “the feel of an
essential Singapore classic” by fellow author Sandi Tan, A Certain
Exposure, has proved to be a thought provoking and memorable
read. In this session of New Word Order, Jolene will be sharing
her experiences as a debut novelist, and her thoughts on the many
themes her novel raises.
This session is moderated by Kokila Annamalai, who heads the
Singapore chapter of We Can! End All Violence Against Women,
a global movement against gender violence.
About Jolene Tan
Jolene Tan was born and raised in Singapore. She has studied
at Cambridge University and Harvard Law School, and currently
works at AWARE, Singapore’s leading gender equality advocacy
group. A Certain Exposure is her first novel.

The Thistle Bindery is a craft-oriented book arts practice that
focuses on outreach, research and conservation of bookbinding.
The inaugural workshop in the Masterclass Series will introduce the
limp binding technique. This technique has been used in Europe
for centuries to protect books. Today, it is also applied widely for
conservation purposes. This Masterclass will show you how the
technique can also be used creatively depending on the materials
and ornamentation. Bookbinders of all levels, including beginners
are welcome.

About William Shakespeare
Born in April 1564, William Shakespeare was an English poet,
playwright, and actor. Though respected in his day, his reputation and
popularity only rose to present heights in the 19th century. He produced
the bulk of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays
were mainly comedies and histories, after which he turned to writing
tragedies. His last phase produced his tragicomedies, or romances, and
collaborations with other playwrights. His plays remain highly popular
today and, having been translated into every major living language, are
studied and performed around the world.

troupe of English actors in India who travelled around towns and

Merchant Ivory Productions was written by two-time Academy
Award-winning screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.
The movie is loosely based on real-life actor-manager Geoffrey
Kendal who delivered Shakespeare performances throughout India
in the 1940s and 1950s.

The Inspired Island: A Series of Eminent Writers from Taiwan recorded
the creative soul of six maestros in literature including Lin Hai-yin, Zhou
Meng-tieh, Yu Kwang-chung, Zheng Chou-yu, Wang Wen-xin, Yang Mu
with cinematic narrative and stylistic images by five outstanding directors,
namely Yang Li-chou, Cheng Tsun-shing, Chen Hwai-eng, Lin Jing-jie and
Wen Chih-yi. The combination of literature with sights and sounds formed
the most important literary documentary in Taiwan. UniSIM Centre for
Chinese Studies and Fisfisa Media Co Ltd are proud to present this series of
literary movies to our Singapore audience.

Towards the Completion of a Poem rides along with the recitation
of Yang Mu, unfolding the exploration towards a vast literary
career. From the hesitant young man at National Hualien Senior
High School, the college student debating and learning by the
Dadu Mountain in Taichung, the researcher dedicated to the
studies of ancient English out of persistence and curiosity at the
University of Iowa, the writer comfortably absorbing western,
Chinese and Taiwanese cultural resources trying to create his
literary works, to the poet who is determined to work on rhyme
and imagination meticulously; these moments amaze us more
deeply when we read Yang’s works once again.

The Untrammeled Traveler follows the footsteps of Mr. and Mrs. Yu
Guang-zhong, exploring the poet’s nostalgia, literary inspiration,
writing style and interaction with the literary circle. How he lived
through those days when Western and Chinese thoughts were
drastically exchanged, how he found his own voice, and how his
life always consists of influential thoughts and vigorous sentences, is
also seen in the film. The film also documents Yu, who chose to settle
in Xizi Bay on the south of the island, with his wife accompanying
each other in peace.

The Coming of Tulku cites the anecdotes of Buddhist classics, referring
to a whole lifetime by the allusion of one day in the life of Chou
Meng-tieh. Chou’s thoughts, meditations, and writings are reflected
in his everyday life. By reproducing the atmosphere of the old Wu
Chang Street, and the loneliness he faced at his bookstand, Chou
pondered over the changes and inspirations brought by the suffering
of various ailments. Several migrations and contemplations in life
eventually lead to the realisation of enlightenment and affection that
he should be both loyal to Buddha and his loved ones.

By keeping track of a young novelist, The Man behind the Book is
connecting the various pieces of Wang Wen-xin’s literary career. From
the dense rows of book shelves in the library to the unevenly linedup trees and forked roads, his sharp sensitiveness to art and personal
opinions, just like sculpting the core of spirituality, translates thoughts
into signals precisely, and eventually turns them into words. Wang Wenxin is a figure in the literary circle who worships words like religion,
treats writing valuably, and exchanges deepness with slowness.

Divine Intervention, or Yadon Ilaheyya, may be described as a surreal
comedy. The film consists largely of a series of briefly interconnected
vignettes, with mainly records of the life of a Palestinian living in
Nazareth, whose girlfriend lives several checkpoints away in the
West Bank city of Ramallah. One lyrical section that features a
beautiful sunglasses-clad Palestinian woman (played by Manal
Khader) whose passing by not only distracts all eyes, but whose gaze
causes Israeli military checkpoint towers to crumble. The director
features prominently as the film's silent, expressionless protagonist in
an iconic and powerfully moving performance has been compared to
the work of Buster Keaton, Jim Jarmusch and Jacques Tati. The film is
noted for its minimal use of dialogue, its slow pace and repetition in
behavior by its characters.

family to a few rooms downstairs in daytime, and a single room at
night. Mohammad refuses to leave this home, which is reinforced by
his principles against violence, decides to find a way to keep his
family together in the house until the Israeli soldiers move on. This film

and troublesome boy she cares for, soon form a bond. Their unique
connection continues to develop and soon she becomes an unspoken

LIVING WITH DES WONG
Graduating with honours from the Paris Conservatory under
legendary musicians, award-winning Michel Legrand continued
a distinguished career performing and writing in classical,
contemporary, film, and jazz genres, among others. He began
to sing atop his piano work in 1964, becoming one of the most
inimitable sing-and-play musicians known to the world. Join
Singapore-based musicians Des Wong and Serena Sharrock as
they present to you the magic that is Michel Legrand.
About Des Wong
Des Wong is among Singapore's foremost sing & play musicians,
specialising in song re-interpretation in the musical theatre and jazz
genres. Classically trained from the age of two, he is a recognisable
pupil of renowned pedagogues Jean Callaghan, Amanda Colliver,
Sylvia Khoo, and Peggy Tan. Des is also first in the world to record on
the harp ukulele, a precious instrument that has been overlooked by
musicians over the past century.

Living With brings you into the centre of the love story of one of
Romantic period's most famous married couple – Clara and Robert
Schumanns – and the former’s relationship with Johannes Brahms.
Clara was the tireless champion of her husband's music. But
unbeknownst to many, besides being an acclaimed piano virtuoso of
her time, Clara too was an accomplished composer.
In 1853, a 20-year old Brahms became acquainted with the
Schumanns. Their steadfast friendship was to take a different turn
when Robert had to be admitted into an asylum after a failed suicide
attempt. In the difficult time which followed and even beyond Robert's
death in 1856, Clara seek much comfort from Brahms who stood in
to help the widow and mother of eight. The two were caught in an
intricate relationship, an intimacy bounded by mutual admiration and
devotion which sparked much controversy.
But speculations and debate aside, may the richness and intensity
of their relationships be told through the evening's selection of music
performed by Veda Lin, Siew Yi Li and Beatrice Lin.
The longest running series programmed by The Arts House, Living with is a
series of one-hour performances held on the first Monday evening of each
month centred around the piano or on piano music. Established and aspiring

Our 2014/2015 season opens with a recital of love songs and
anniversaries. Taking centre stage are the works of Richard Strauss,
one of the greatest of lieder composers, as we celebrate the 150th
anniversary of his birth. Join us as we pay tribute to Stephen Foster
and Giacomo Meyerbeer, two once celebrated but now largely
forgotten composers who died 150 years ago. This evening, we also
remember two other important song composers, Joseph Marx and
Marc Blitzstein, who died 50 years ago.

This adaptation of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot deals with
the undertones of madness from a childlike perspective. While
the characters and situations are the same as in the original play,
the wait is addressed from a different point of view. It’s the “wait”
that each one of us experiences every day since childhood. Our
characters grow in age as the play progresses and so does their
“waiting” for Godot. The contemporary tones of the play are strictly
limited to the props and accessories used. However their resourceful
use gives the play its timeline, they create a setting, and they amplify
the undertones. We follow the Grips style of theatre for this play - our
characters start as children and grow in to teenagers.

Floating Bones is a double bill of two one-act plays: Floathouse 1001
by Cultural Medallion-winner Han Lao Da, and Dragon Bone by
Quah Sy Ren. These originally Chinese-language plays have been
translated to English by award-winning translator Jeremy Tiang.
Floathouse 1001 offers a glimpse of a dystopian future –Singapore,
finding it has no land for its ageing population, places them in pods
at sea. Trapped in this enclosed space, three old people are driven
half-mad but what happens when the inhabitants of Floathouse 1001
decide to rebel?
Dragon Bone is a dream play, a collage of memories and impressions.
A schoolboy attends his mother’s funeral; a refugee from a nameless
land discovers that her lover is not who he seems; a train passenger
finds himself seated next to a beautiful woman. Can we trust our
senses? And ultimately, to whom do we owe our loyalty to?

Celebrate Drama! is a local youth and community festival presented
by Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA). In the 8th year
running, the theme for Celebrate Drama! 2014 is YOUTH Take On
Local Literature. This festival brings together the combined efforts
of teachers, artists, youths and the community who do interesting
and meaningful work with drama. Facilitators include celebrated
local playwright Haresh Sharma, young emerging talent Faith
Ng, as well as theatre favourites like Matt Grey and Sean Tobin to
name a few. This year, workshops and performances will use lesserknown Singaporean literary works as a stimulus to learn new drama
skills and deepen their understanding of drama processes. SDEA
encourages youths not only to view each other's works but also to
collaborate in workshops, make new friends, and have meaningful
dialogues with each other about drama and local literature.

history and the sacrifices of these groups of citizen soldiers who have
fought so hard to protect Singapore during the Japanese invasion
but they have now been forgotten by history.

CHIT-CHAT WITH -
JOLENE TAN
New to The Arts House bimonthly, this section features different
writers and artists to give you insights on who they are behind that
50-word biography. This month, we talk to Jolene Tan to find out
more about this up-and-coming star’s quirks.
Your thoughts on the Twilight series.
I've not read it myself but I know it surprisingly well because I've read
very detailed (in some cases line-by-line) analyses of it. It sounds
enormously dull, but I suppose it has the merit of not being a remix
of a reboot of a spin-off of a prequel, and of course plenty of equally
vapid wish fulfillment fantasy has escaped a similar slating primarily
because it's marketed at dudebros rather than teenage girls.
What’s your non-writing persona?
Numerous and ill-defined. I can't really answer this.
How do you get over writer's block?
I'm not sure that I do! I write fiction by sitting down for hours and
grinding out tiny dribbles of words at a time. Occasionally if I'm
lucky entire paragraphs appear. So I don't "get over" writer's block
so much as I inch through it.
Favourite book of the moment?
The last thing I read was Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi
Adichie. It was superb. Strongly recommend.
If you could have a meal with any 3 writers (dead or
alive), who would they be?
I feel like the answer to this might depend on whether we were all
eating together or I was having little tête-à-têtes. And there isn't
necessarily a direct relationship between how enjoyable a writer's
company is in book form versus as a mealtime companion. I have
a hunch it would fun to talk E.M. Forster with him and Zadie Smith,
but I'm not sure who would make the fourth; I'd love to meet Adichie
or A.S. Byatt or Alison Bechdel or Greg Egan, but what if they didn't
all fit together? This is why it's better to go to other people's dinner
parties than to thrown one's own - they can do the worrying about
how all that pans out. And hopefully the washing up too.
