WHERE FUN
AND FRIENDS
MEET
Overnight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing:
they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore
nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence,
and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’s
fun too.
Summer also is a time to discover how to become and stay
active to develop healthy habits for a lifetime. The benefits
are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining
confidence or connecting with others, joining the Y is about
building the whole person, from the inside out.

DEVELOPING POSITIVE CHARACTER
At the Y, we integrate the following positive experiences in
our camps:
Caring environment. Camps provide caring, encouraging
environments for children.
Adult role models. Camp directors and staff model positive,
responsible behavior.
Positive peer interaction. Campers interact with other
campers who model responsible behavior in safe,
well-supervised settings.
Creative activities. Campers participate in music, art and
drama to encourage and enhance their creativity.
Self-esteem. Our staff and activities help campers feel
successful and good about themselves.

CAMP
HELPING CHILDREN THRIVE
At the YMCA, we partner with the Search Institute
to help adults connect with children and youth in
a positive way to help young people thrive.
Research shows that there are essential elements
that are crucial to their healthy development. We
call these elements “Developmental Assets”—the
positive experiences, relationships, opportunities
and values that young people need to thrive. We
integrate these into all our programs and services.
The essential building blocks for young people’s
successful growth and development fall into eight
categories:
7. Social Competencies—Young people need
skills and competencies that equip them to make
positive choices, build relationships, and succeed
in life.
2. Empowerment—Young people need to be
valued by their community and have opportunities
to contribute to others. For this to occur, they
must be safe and feel secure.
For more information on what you can do, visit
www.Search-Institute.org
8. Positive Identity—Young people need a strong
sense of their own power, purpose, worth, and
promise.
You have the power to change lives. By building
assets with Torrance-South Bay YMCA’s children
and youth, you can help them to become
competent, caring, and responsible adults.
1. Support—Young people need to experience
support, care, and love from their families and
many others. They need organizations and
institutions that provide positive, supportive
environments.
3. Boundaries and Expectations—Young people
need to know what is expected of them and
whether activities and behaviors are “in bounds”
or “out of bounds.”
4. Constructive Use of Time—Young people need
constructive, enriching opportunities for growth
through creative activities, youth programs,
congregational involvement, and quality time
at home.
5. Commitment to Learning—Young people need
to develop a lifelong commitment to education
and training.
6. Positive Values—Young people need to
develop strong values that guide their choices.

Preschool & Child Care
SUMMER PRESCHOOL
LICENSED SUMMER CHILD CARE
We provide a well rounded program encouraging
the development of children to their fullest
potential. Preschool has age-appropriate,
hands-on activities that provide many
opportunities for learning and growth, using the
High Scope curriculum. High Scope is a child-led
curriculum that encourages children to follow their
interests and ensures they are active participants
in their environment. The YMCA is a safe,
nurturing environment that encourages
independence, confidence and positive self-esteem
in children. We encourage critical thinking and
conflict resolution skills.
These programs are state licensed and
school-based, and take place in YMCA child care
modular buildings. Quality supervision is provided
by our caring staff. Children travel on a bus field
trip once a week, except for holiday weeks. This
program operates 6:30 am to 6 pm, Monday
through Friday, and offers crafts, games, youth
fitness and healthy snacks in the am and pm daily.
Summer child care provides safe, fun, licensed,
quality care for children ages 5 through 12.
All children will be swim tested prior to any water
trips. If your child is attending Torrance Education
Foundation summer school, please see the summer
school care program (see page 12).

Resident Camps
RESIDENT CAMPS HOSTED BY
TORRANCE-SOUTH BAY YMCA
YMCA CAMP WHITTLE
Entering Grades 6-9
YMCA Camp Whittle is a traditional Y camp set in the
San Bernardino Mountains near Big Bear Lake, CA.
Campers will enjoy swimming, crafts, hiking
adventures, theme meals, archery, boating, campfire
skits, stories and songs. We have built a positive
progression that takes into account kid’s physical and
phsychological development. All programs are done in
“cabin groups” that emphasize the small group
experience, ensuring that campers form close bonds
with leaders and cabin mates. 6-7 grade cabins and
8-9 grade cabins each make up a “unit”. The camp
activities are designed to be progressive with each
unit doing activities that help campers grow.
Overnight camps are an amazing experience that your
child will remember for years to come. Living in a cabin
with 8-10 other campers helps each child to learn to
accept others for who they are. They learn to work as
a team, make new friends and discover a place where
they truly fit in. We offer well-planned, safe and
dynamic programs for each camper age group. Our
progressive camping model ensures that our
programs grow with your camper and offer new
challenges and experiences the older your camper gets.

SPECIAL NEEDS
29
YMCA leaders are encouraging and patient and can help
facilitate successful camp experiences for children with mild
and moderate disabilities. Our programs are not designed
for campers who need significant assistance or personal
care, require constant one-on-one support, or have great
difficulty managing their behavior in group settings. For
those camp needs, the YMCA recommends locating a special
needs camp via the American Camp Association.
Registration and FAQs
EARN YOUR WAY TO CAMP
I have an annual pass for my child, can they use their
pass? (Knott’s, Disneyland, Magic Mountain) Sure, your
child may use their pass on the day of the event. Due to
the many types of annual passes and block out dates
you may send your child’s pass to the event. Once we
know the pass is accepted on the day of the event, your
Camp Director will inform us and the Y will issue a
limited credit at the YMCA’s discretion. Unfortunately,
we will not be issuing tickets to the event.
You can also “earn your way to camp” by selling YMCA
peanuts. Each case you sell earns you $28 credit toward
the camp of your choice. You may pick up YMCA peanuts
beginning Saturday, April 26. For more information or to
pick up your case of peanuts, contact the YMCA child
care and camp office at 310-602-4898.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
I heard some buses don’t have seat belts. Is that right?
Yes, that is correct. Don’t worry, according to the
National Safety Council in 1996, school buses are 172
times safer than your family automobile.
We have many summer job opportunities. You must be a
minimum of 18 years old or a high school graduate and
enjoy working with children. It is preferred that you have
had college classes related to working with children, but
not required. Day Camp directors must be a minimum of
25 years old. Apply at the Torrance-South Bay YMCA.
For more information, please contact Suzanne Villa at
310-602-4881.
What camps have additional waivers? How do I get
them? Every summer, a handful of our specialty camps
require additional waivers. The following camps require
an additional waiver: Fit Kids Gymnastics, Rock Climbing,
Horsemanship, Self-defense, and Ice Skating. You should
receive the waiver at the time of registration and/or
confirmation. If you need one sent or faxed to you,
please contact the camp/child care office or online you
will be able to print the forms yourself.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Become a Resident Camp counselor at YMCA Camp
Round Meadow, YMCA or Camp Whittle. You must be a
minimum of 18 years old. Some experience and college
classes related to working with children are helpful, but
not required. Teenagers between the ages of 16 and 17
can volunteer as CITs. Apply at the Torrance-South Bay
YMCA. Training and staff meetings start soon! See pages
27 & 28. Join us on Information Night on April 22 at
7pm. Call Ami Costa at 310.602.4893 or
[email protected].
The camp I want to register for is already full. Is there
a waitlist? We do not have a waitlist. When a camp fills
up, the registration staff begins an interest list. All
people on the interest list are called when a space
becomes available. The first to respond will be enrolled.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
I only need to send my child to camp a few days a
week. Will you prorate fees? We believe that a true
camp experience is a week-long experience.
Unfortunately, we cannot prorate fees because we pay
our vendors and assign staff for the week.
What if my child becomes ill or gets injured while at
camp? If your child becomes ill while at camp, our staff
will contact you to pick him or her up. Camp is not
designed to handle ill children, so it is important to tend
to your child in a timely manner. If your child is injured,
the staff will take whatever steps necessary to obtain
medical care. If we are unable to reach you and your
child needs medical attention, she or he will be
transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Will sunscreen be applied to my child throughout the
day? Of course! We count on parents to apply
sunscreen before children come to camp. We apply
sunscreen at snack time, lunchtime and in the early
afternoon. Children in 4th grade and up apply their own
sunscreen.
Each child needs to bring a supply of sunscreen for
themselves. If you do not want sunscreen applied to your
children or would like a special type of sunscreen, please
send a note to your child’s camp staff on Monday. If
your child burns easily, he or she may need to bring
some additional protective gear like a hat, t-shirt or rash
guard that he or she can wear while participating in
outdoor activities.
What if I need to pick up my child early? Or drop off
late? Our staff does their best to accommodate late
arrivals and early departures. Please communicate with
your child’s camp director or make arrangements with
our staff so they know in advance. Note: For field trips
we cannot wait for late children due to arrival
reservations with the vendors.

FAQs
How much instruction will my child receive in his or her
specialty camp? Please remember, you are signing up
your child to attend a sports camp, not a sports clinic.
Our specialty camps are designed to teach self-esteem,
leadership, teamwork and character values. They will
execute drills, learn new techniques, play games and
practice the sport. Always remember, if your child would
like more intensive instruction, encourage him or her to
ask the camp staff!
Can we update our personal information online? Yes.
After logging into the online registration site, click on the
Profile link to be taken to your personal information
page. You can print receipts, a schedule and other items.
Can I apply for financial assistance with program costs
online? No, but you may download the forms from our
website or visit us at the YMCA.

• The YMCA covers all expenses during the camp day;
spending money is not required unless specified by
camp director.
Required Swim Test
A swim test is required before a child participates in a
swimming activity such as a trip to Raging Waters or the
beach. We have set aside time in one of our pools at the
YMCA on Sundays from 12 to 4 pm, starting June 15. An
appointment is not required. Parents are encouraged to
take advantage of this time, otherwise the test will be
done during the camp week.
Children who do not receive a swim test will be treated
as non-swimmers and only allowed in shallow areas on a
water trip. Non-swimmers may be in pool water up to
their armpits, and up to their knees at the beach. Swim
tests are required one time for the summer if the form is
signed by a parent and our lifeguard.
Why do you need a credit card? Unfortunately, in the
past we have occasionally found that some members’
checks have bounced, children have caused some damage
to the facilities or there have been instances which have
required the YMCA to recover its costs. We now require a
credit card. Most of the time it will not be charged unless
directed by the member, by selecting the weekly charge
box. A credit card is the only way to register online.
The YMCA has a very stringent water policy; to ensure
the safety of the children, please sign up children for
water camps only if they are strong swimmers.

Proceeds from this tournament provide
“camperships” to give deserving children the
life-changing experience of attending YMCA
Summer Camp. In 20 years, we have raised
$1 million and sent 3,334 kids to camp who
otherwise would not have been able to attend.
