Winter 2013 - San Diego Food Bank
Mayor Sanders Launches
Holiday Food Drive 2012
I
n one of his final public events before
retiring, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders
launched the Food Bank’s 2012 Holiday
Food Drive at a press conference on Nov. 9.
The Food Bank’s Advisory Board Co-chair Stephen
Cushman kicked off the press conference explaining that the
Food Bank has been feeding record numbers of people since
the start of the recession back in 2008. Cushman attributed the
record demand to sustained high unemployment, high gas and
food prices, and the region’s high cost of living.

and radio commercials playing throughout the holiday season
encouraging the community to donate.
Mayor Sanders explained that the need for food remains
greater than ever before and that his Christmas present to his
daughters would be a donation to the Food Bank on their behalf.
The Holiday Food Drive ran from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. More
than 700 businesses, civic groups, religious organizations,
and schools hosted food drives for the Food Bank collecting
hundreds of thousands of pounds of food.
During the press conference, the Mayor announced the

of Jerome’s Furniture, and Steve Bernstein, Business Banking
President, Wells Fargo Bank.

distribution in Fallbrook.
“The economy has really affected us.
My husband and I were both working
80 hours a week at a company and it just
went under. I was an account executive
and my husband was inventory and sales.
It was overnight. It went bankrupt.
“We got evicted from the house we
were renting. We were surviving on
savings but that all dried up and yesterday
we needed food. So I came to the Food
Bank distribution here in Fallbrook. This
is my first time receiving help.”
Asked how she feels about receiving
help from the Food Bank, Rachel replies,
“Truthfully, I don’t want to be here, but
I will do whatever it takes to feed my
kids. These past few months have been
really tough. The kids eat before we do so
they don’t see how little my husband and
I are eating. My husband and I won’t eat
or will eat small portions so that the kids
get full.”
Rachel beams with pride when she
talks about her three children. “Avery
is 10 and in the fifth grade. Angela is
9 and in the fourth grade, and Ashton is
here with me today. He’s 3 years old.”
Walking through the food line,
Rachel is handed bags of cauliflower,
carrots, tortillas, apples, and potatoes.
As she is handed her food, she
contemplates her current situation.

THANK YOU, SAN DIEGO!
A special thanks to our 2012 Holiday Food Drive supporters.
O
n behalf of the Food Bank team, we want
to thank the entire San Diego community
for supporting this year’s Holiday Food
Drive. Hundreds of businesses, schools, civic groups,
and religious organizations hosted food drives for
the Food Bank.
We were thrilled that Jerome’s Furniture and
Wells Fargo were our official Holiday Food Drive
sponsors in partnership with KUSI Channel 9, NBC
Channel 7, KyXy 96.5, and the U-T San Diego.
Our official supermarket partners, Vons and
Stater Bros. supermarkets, provided excellent
support collecting food from the public in our
traditional red food drive barrels at 57 Vons and 11 Stater Bros. locations.
Vons, once again, made giving even easier for customers by preparing pre-packed
bags filled with our most-needed
food items.
Thanks to the support of our
many sponsors and the community,
the Food Bank was able to help
tens of thousands of families in San
Diego County during the holiday
season.
”
Because the
economy is
still dire, we
still need your
support.”
The holidays are over, but we still need support from the community to carry out
our mission because hunger is not seasonal.
There are many ways you can help, such as hosting a winter food drive,
volunteering at the Food Bank’s warehouse to sort and package food, or by making
a donation. Our Monthly Meals Club allows you to donate $10 per month, which
enables us to provide 30 meals to hungry families in our community.
We also have a food-raiser gala coming up on March 23, 2013 at the Food Bank.
The gala will benefit the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which
provides weekend food to elementary school children who face hunger over the
weekends when free school meals are unavailable. Visit the Food Bank’s website for
more details.
Thank you once again to everyone who continues to support the Food Bank —
not just over the holiday season but throughout the year.

Through the Farm to Family program, on average, every
dollar donated to the purchase of fresh produce provides eight
pounds of produce for families in need. SDG&E’s donation
will provide approximately 160,000 pounds of fresh produce

More than 30 Food Bank volunteers greeted fans
at entrances to Qualcomm Stadium and collected cash and
canned food donations.
He continues, “We serve around 300 families that have an average of four people in the household, so we serve a total of 1,400
people in the Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rayburn, and the Deluz area. The Fallbrook Food Pantry couldn’t do this distribution without

A Fundraiser Gala, Saturday, March 23
M
ark your calendars for the Food Bank’s 2013 gala fundraiser, Foodtasia,
which will take place at the Food Bank’s Miramar warehouse on Saturday,
March 23.
The gala will benefit the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which
provides weekend food to elementary school children who face hunger over the
weekends, when free school meals are unavailable.
The Food Bank’s 72,000 sq. ft. warehouse will serve as the venue for the
event, enabling the Food Bank to showcase our operations while at the same time
hosting an exciting evening of dining, dancing, and live entertainment with local
band sensation NRG.
The gala will be a feast for the senses with exquisite foods prepared by six
of San Diego’s finest chefs, who will be preparing signature dishes for guests.
Each $200 ticket will fund a child on the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program
for an entire school year. And each $1,800 table will fund nine students on the
program for an entire year.
Join us for an enjoyable night at the Food Bank while supporting a very
important Food Bank program.

On the morning of game day, two Charger Girls,
Meredith and Clarice, promoted the food drive with live
interviews on six morning radio programs: Rock 105.3,
Channel 933, 101KGB, KOGO 95.7, Star 94.1, and XTRA
Sports 1360 AM.
As Rachel is handed the last bag of produce and turns to leave, her somber expression is broken with a smile as she explains that
her husband, Kaden, has an interview for a job tomorrow. She turns and says, “I’m hoping that things will get better.”

Through the Farm to Family program, on average, every
dollar donated to the purchase of fresh produce provides eight
pounds of produce for families in need. SDG&E’s donation
will provide approximately 160,000 pounds of fresh produce
for families in need.
The Fallbrook Food Pantry couldn’t do this distribution without
food from the Food Bank. We just supply the manpower. The harmony of us working together is beautiful. We are reaching
so many households in our area who need help.”

Rachel has been unsuccessful in finding a job. “I’m actually

are too many schools, too many graduates, and not enough work.
I went to school and I thought to myself, ‘Yes! I’m going to work
in the medical field.’ But there’s no work. So, I’m looking for jobs
