This exam from Education Testing Service will replace the GED as the high school equivalency, starting in 2014. If you want to pursue a rewarding career or continue your education, then getting your high school credential is a very important step. What is on the exam? Your skills and knowledge are measured in five core areas that make up the five HiSET subtests: • Language Arts- Reading Instructors: Doug and Becky Pride These preparatory courses for the SAT have proven helpful to high school students who wish to improve their scores on the verbal and math sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Students in the English class will also write two writing prompts which the instructor will correct and comment on. This course will prepare the student for the May 3rd SAT EXAMINATION that all juniors in the state will take. Registration deadline is Thursday, March 13, if space is still available! High Intensity Circuit Training (HICT) is the secret to losing body fat, weight and increasing energy. The combination of aerobic and resistance training in a high-intensity, limited rest design can deliver numerous health benefits in much less time than traditional programs. The circuit consists of exercise stations that alternate lower body and upper body strength movements and alternates more aerobic actions with less aerobic ones, with carefully timed periods of short rest in between, allowing for active recovery between stations. The exercises station will be done for 45 seconds, followed by no more than 15 seconds of rest in between. The full circuit is repeated 2-3 times. You get a total body work out in 45 minutes, gaining maximal results in minimal time. The class will end with a core work out and light stretch. Exercises can be modified for safety and gradual conditioning to this type of exercise. Each participant works at their own pace and individual fitness level while experiencing the motivation and support of the group and instructor. 12 Session 1. Monday Evenings, Jan 6-Apr 14 (no class Feb 17) MIW MPR 6:30-7:30pm Session 2. Wednesday Evenings, Jan 8-Apr 16 (no class Feb 19) MIW MPR 6:30-7:30pm Session 3. Thursdays Mornings Jan 9-Apr 17 (no class Feb 20) West Cumberland Community Center 9:30-10:30am Fee: $80/ $90 non-res PER session (Choose two sessions for $145/$155 non-res) Core & Stretch Training Instructor: Jenn Wilson NEW! “Core & Stretch“ is a class designed to focus on strengthening and flexibility. The first thirty minutes will focus on lower body strengthening including glutes, abductor and adductor work and core work that will strengthen abs, obliques and the lower back. A variety of body weight exercises will be performed to build strength and definition in the lower body while isolating specific muscle groups rather than performing full body exercises. Core work will be focused on functional training to enhance daily activities and will encompass everything from crunches to a variety of planks. The second half of class will be dedicated to Active Isolated Stretching to improve flexibility, range of motion, prevent injury, and improve body mechanics. Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a method of flexibility training where stretches are held for no longer than 2 seconds and are performed in reps and sets. Studies have shown that when stretches held longer than 2 seconds those muscles contract, which is the opposite reaction desired while stretching. Another benefit of AIS is that the person stretching uses their own muscles to move into position. When one muscle moves, it causes the opposite muscle to shut off and relax resulting in the perfect environment to stretch it. This program will is a beneficial for athletes, people who exercise daily, beginners or people who are looking for strengthening and increased flexibility and range of motion with no impact, machines or weights. This class will be performed almost entirely on the floor so please bring a mat for your comfort and protection.
