UrbanTheater Company Presents by Migdalia Cruz directed by Marcela Muñoz Season 10 Funded by: Partial Season Funding by: Lolita De Lares 1 E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E Welcome to the closing of UrbanTheater Company’s (UTC) 10th anniversary season! On May 25, UTC turned eleven years old, and during the first decade of our existence, UTC has made professional theater accessible to the public, specifically on Paseo Boricua in the Humboldt Park community. I would like to acknowledge the Puerto Rican Cultural Center (PRCC) for our ongoing partnership and support. This season, our play selections continue to connect our history, our mission and our deep roots in the Chicago theater community to our future. Season ten is made possible thanks to a cultural and diversity grant from The Chicago Community Trust and partial funding by Genesis Theatrical. Due to this generous support UTC has been able to improve the quality of its work this season, with a play as dense, challenging and timeless as our revival of Migdalia Cruz’s Lolita de Lares. Even though it was written twenty one years ago, this play is the perfect production to conclude our season, especially within the context of Puerto Rico’s fiscal and colonial crises. Lolita de Lares pays tribute to an important milestone in Chicago theater history from twenty one years ago, with themes that still resonate with audiences today. We appreciate you and your support and would like to thank you for being a part of our milestone season! ¡Que viva Puerto Rico! With love, Ivan Vega Executive Director 2 UrbanTheater Company D R A M AT U R G Y N O T E S B Y D R . L I Z A A N N AC O S TA The delicate figure of Lolita Lebron leading the band of men who accompanied her that day in 1954 to shoot inside the House of Representatives belied a strong woman willing to sacrifice everything for an ideal. She and her compañeros, Irving Flores Rodriguez, Andres Figueroa Cordero and Rafael Cancel Miranda had arrived at the House of Representatives where the reauthorization of the bracero program would be discussed. They sat in the gallery until Lolita fired the first shot in the air. In fact, none of them shot to kill, but all were prepared to be killed for this action; their bullets ricocheted and wounded several representatives. The grito of this Lareña on this day, “Viva Puerto Rico libre,” was heard as she unfurled the Puerto Rican flag and opened fire. In the summer of 1995, Migdalia Cruz’s Lolita de Lares premiered with the Latino Chicago Theater company. It sprang forth on the heels of Dolores, a monologue by Frankie Davila, then member of this pioneer group. Lolita was in our minds then—the referendum of 1993 on the political status of the island, not the first, brought forth almost a century of debate about the island’s relationship with the United States. Twenty-one years later, we at UTC revisit con gran emoción a play that still resonates, perhaps with more urgency, as Puerto Rico faces a grave economic crisis and a historic challenge to its political status quo. We hope that Lolita de Lares inspires and challenges us! Producer *Denotes UTC ensemble member 4 UrbanTheater Company MISSION UrbanTheater Company (UTC) is committed to the creation and exploration of urbaninspired works that convey, illuminate and empathize with the human experience. H I S TO R Y UrbanTheater Company (UTC) was founded in 2005 by a Latino ensemble deeply rooted in their community and culture. In 2005, UTC presented its inaugural production of Miguel Piñero’s 1974 Drama Critics Circle Award and Obie Award winning play Short Eyes, directed by Court Theatre’s Resident Artist/Director Ron OJ Parson. The theatrical community’s support of UTC’s inaugural offering and the critical success of Short Eyes led to UTC dedicating its Premiere Season to producing the Major Plays of Miguel Piñero. In 2006, UTC produced two more Piñero plays, both Midwest Premieres: The Sun Always Shines for the Cool, directed by UTC Co-Founder Madrid St. Angelo and Eulogy for A Small Time Thief, directed by Collaboraction Theater’s Joel Moormon. Both plays were critically acclaimed by Chicago’s theatrical community and garnered UTC with two awards and citations: Performink and Gay Chicago’s Top Ten Best of the Year, The Sun Always Shines for the Cool; After Dark Best Actor and Best Set Design, UTC Co-Founder, Ivan Vega and Jorge Félix, respectively. As a platform for multicultural representation in the arena of performance and storytelling, UTC continues to serve as a bridge between artists of all mediums, our varying and respective communities of color and our communities’ youth. UTC engages itself in the work of community responsibility and has worked to raise awareness concerning many of the social issues facing our diverse backgrounds.
