As I write this we are nearing mid August, and our summer events have been coming at us fast and furious. Seems like we have something on the agenda almost every weekend through the summer months, ranging from driving schools to day trips and tours. It is gratifying to see the excellent turnouts we have been getting at events, with a record Duffy drive, an oversubscribed Boeing tour, and a full house for the upcoming skid pad event. This speaks, I hope, both to the growing ranks of club members, but also to the efforts of the events teams and executive in trying to put together a broad cross section of activities which will appeal to a diverse range of interests. I recently had the pleasure of driving my six series down to Renton, along with a half dozen other club members, to join the CCA Puget Sound chapter at their annual Concours. They very generously invited B.C. cars to participate, and accepted Canuck bucks at par for the entry fee, so with the complementary detailing kit from Griots Garage for each participant. it was a real bargain. A great turnout of vehicles, I don’t know what the final total count was, but the six series was the feature car with 33 fine examples on display. A couple of outstanding Euro M6’s, but I was unable to negotiate for my first born! Dean wowed the field with the M1 and took home the hardware as a result .A big thank you to our friends south of the border, who by the way, have been pretty regular participants at some of our own events as well, which is great to see. That gives me a good lead into a plug for our upcoming Concours at Waterfront Park on 23Aug. We are once again hoping for a good turnout and good cross section of vehicles on display, so clean up your pride and joy, or just your daily driver, and plan to attend. It’s an outing for the whole family in a great location. The usual BBQ brats, chips and sodas will be on offer. Full details are elsewhere in the newsletter. One other event of note you may all be interested in, is the upcoming 8-fest in Garberville California the weekend of 26/28Sep. As most of you will know, we have an enthusiastic group of eight series owners in our club, so we will be well represented at this event, which will be the largest gathering of eight series vehicles ever! At current count I believe there are 83 cars registered. I got turned down to attend with my six series; but good things happen; so I’ll be there! Check out the website at www.8-fest.com. I hope to see many of you at the Concours or other events as the summer winds down, so as always; Drive safely and drive well. [email protected] BMW Car Club of British Columbia Maintaining Contact by Rolf Drommer - Member Services By the time you read this issue of Ausblick we will be well into our summer events. If you haven’t been to an event yet this summer, you owe it to yourself and your bimmer to attend an event. Events are what our club is and always has been about. As you can see from the many pictures in this issue, we don’t do meetings in some meeting room, we meet at club events and have fun. Recent event attendance has been great with some events having well over 40 and 50 cars. Most events are even suitable for the entire family. But if there is one event you shouldn’t miss it is our annual Concours and BMW Heritage Celebration. This year is our 6th Annual event, and we are counting on great weather and a large turn out. As the name suggests, the event is a ‘Concours’ or gathering, and the aim is to celebrate the fine cars and the heritage of our marque. Our members are the proud owners of some 380+ examples of BMWs finest, and thanks to the BC climate we have a wonderful cross section from rare vintage classics, to beloved older daily drivers as well as many new cars. The Concours has two main purposes, first to bring all these fine cars and their owners together for a fun day, and second to recognize those members cars that are well cared for an loved. To that end we have two categories for the event, display and judged. All members are encouraged to at least attend the event and display their cars. For those that enjoy taking extra care of their cars, we have the judged category, where members can compete for first, second and third place trophies in 7 car classes based on the type and population of cars in our club. That means a total of 21 trophies are up for grabs. Competition is fun and serious, but even well cared for older daily driver cars stand a good chance. That is because we recognize that BMWs are meant to be driven, and our judging criteria includes a bonus point system for age and mileage to help level the playing field in the various classes. The judged category is only open to BMW Club members, and yes that includes member clubs in our region. The display category is open to all. We have planned the event to be a fun family day, with activities such as a coloring contest for the kids, a member hosted BBQ, and various displays, including a new car display courtesy of our host dealer, and a detailing info session courtesy of Autoglym Canada. The event is at scenic Waterfront Park in North Vancouver, so you get the Vancouver skyline on one side and the north shore mountains on the other. Entry fees ad sponsor support help cover the cost of the trophies, and part of the BBQ. In addition our sponsors will be providing prizes. The prize draw is only for registered cars, whether display or judged. In addition the first 60 cars registered receive a commemorative dash plaque. The gates open at 10:00 am, and we ask that all judged and display cars be on the site and on the grass by 11:00 am. At 11:30 am the judged cars are declared hands off and judging begins. Judging should be complete and the awarding of trophies will start around 2:00 pm I hope to see all of you there for our largest ever Concours gathering. If you missed the June one, there is a session on August 20th, and again on October. The Road Skills session is part of our graduated Driver Training program and requires completion of a Car Control course or equivalent before you can attend. If you were there, you couldn’t help miss the stunning presence of Dean’s awesome 1980 M1. Contrasted with Sultan’s 507 and the great line of member’s M cars, the 8’s and other fine BMW’s it kept members busy looking at a wide variety of BMW heritage. To make the entire event more fun, Scott Gable and a crew of helpers tended the BBQ for a feast of Bavarian smokies. Dean even gave quite a few members a drive in his M1. Ear to ear grins were present as members reluctantly got out of the car after a short ride. Volume 6 No. 3 2003 Ausblick 15 BMW Car Club of British Columbia The on-going story of a vintage racer with a BMW 2002 After 12 days on the road, the pig and I are home safe and sound. She ran flawlessly over 3 days in Seattle last weekend, and just completed another 3 days in Portland. Seattle's Pacific Raceways (aka SIR) was home to the NorthWest Historics, with over 280 cars participating, rumoured to be 10,000 spectators, and over $300k US raised for the Children's Hospital of seattle. Over and over again, I found myself saying 'this is nuts'. Crowds made it an ordeal just to get out of the paddock, there were 15 original 1970-era TransAm cars (rumblerumble) and a Ferrari Enzo that just happened by. The pig got placed in the medium bore historic group, 1963-1970 under 2.0 cars, so in a field of 44(!) cars, over half were 911's. Is it fair to place a sports car like that against a sedan like a 2002? I think not. I managed to finish mid-pack thanks to rock-solid reliability and a bit of local knowledge, and finished 2nd among the 4 '02's there. Next up, the Baxter Historics at Portland. This seemed to be almost as large as the previous weekend, and many of the California crowd made it to both events. I took part in the Vintage sedan Racing Group (VSRG) 2.5 challenge race. It was kinda cool being the featured group of the weekend, but I wasn't prepared for the level of preparation from the competitors. The VSRG is mainly a Californian 16 Ausblick thing with 2002's, Alfa GTV's and Giulias, Cortinas, Escorts, lots of evil 510's, and even an RX3. These guys are wicked fast. Rumour had it that the leaders all had at least 220hp out of their 4 cyl units, and I believe it. The lap times were under 1:30, which was faster than all but the V8's and Formula cars. The pig and a few of the mortal Alfas ran between 1:40 and 1:45, so we lost sight of the leaders quick. Oh yeah, did I mention that John Morton (1972 TransAm Under 2.0 National Champion) was an honorary invited participant in his original BRE Datsun 510? He passed me on the back straight at around 150mph (his speed, not mine), pulled in front of me with 6" to spare so that he could line up the next turn, and looked like he could have been yawning the whole time. 'I am not worthy, I am not worthy'. Other drivers of note were Kevin McKee who now also drives in Speedvision's Touring car series for the Realtime team, and Jeff Hecox, a senior engineer at Dinan. To give you an idea what a Dinan engineer is like, he had Volume 6 No. 3 2003 his own scales so that he could balance the car down to the pound at each corner, and taped over 40% of his grill because he had calculated that the aerodynamic benefit outweighed a few degrees of cooling efficiency. Uh-huh. Still, I qualified 13th out of 24 cars. How is that possible you ask? Well, I'm beginning to understand that Tortoise/ hare thing. Some of these cars were so highly strung (as were a few drivers that had a few mishaps) that some didn't last long, and the pig soldiered on by. Did someone say that german cars outlast italian and english ones? Anyway, I didn't run in the main event sunday afternoon. After seeing some of the midpack competitors play smash-up derby in the qualifying race, and a slower Alfa I was hoping to catch pack up and go home, I decided to do the same. I was exhausted from 6 days of racing in 11 days, and Portland's a long way from home - especially when you're towing. Overall, the pig was great. I (like everyone) have a list of things I'd like to BMW Car Club of British Columbia get, but top of the list is a new diff. Having a tall rear-end (feel funny saying that) stinks. Everyone else in '02's had 4.11s, and I have a 3.67. The difference is huge. They pull out of corners like I'm standing still, and that's everything. I also learned that having a fully-locked diff isn't what it's cracked up to be. That's another story. Next on the list would be a decent (not cherry) set of grills. Mine lost some slats by the end of the weekend, and it makes me feel like I lost a tooth. They had obviously been damaged before I got the car. Those Aluminum grills are hard to repair, so if you want to sell a set of decent early grills for a 2002, let me know. You could make the pig smile with confidence once again! That's all for now. I'm tired and going to bed. Hope to be out next on August 17 at Mission. Ron ‘The Pig’’ looks great in it’s new color scheme. For those of you who don’t already know, our club has a very strong ‘02 contingent, with some 20 ‘02s that are proudly owned and driven by members. In addition most of these members and about 30 more (Internet based) ‘02 enthusiasts run a special interest group for their cars. The BC 02 Group. It is an Internet based group of enthusiasts in support of their cars. Along with coming to various club events, they also do some special interest events of their own. All judged and most of the display entries (the first 40) will receive a commemorative dash plaque. In addition to all the member cars on display, we’ll have a BMW display provide by our host dealer, Park Shore Motors Ltd., and a short detailing info session hosted by Autoglym. We also expect to have some other vendor displays. We’ll also be hosting a member BBQ so you won’t go hungry during the course of the event. 6 and 8 Series Coupes Roadsters and Cabrios including E30, E36, E46 cabs (non M) and Z3, Z4 and Z8 roadsters Heritage Class (not used this year) Vintage Class Cars Host Dealer Park Shore Motors Ltd. 835 Automall Drive North Vancouver, BC V7P 3R8 www.parkshorebmw.com The Ultimate Driving Experience™ Detailing session provided by: Entry Fees: Display Cars $10 Judged Cars $20 pre registration is mandatory for judged category On-line registration via our web site III NIXON AUTOMOTIVE A DIVISION OF GS AUTOSPORT Complete BMW service and repair center Large inventory of new and used OEM parts Call for an appoitment today 604.432.9333 6935 Buller Avenue, Buranby Planning to participate in a Track Day? Road Safety Info from the good folks at the Central Island Highway Patrol section of the RCMP Frustrated by Obeying the Rules An actual sample grill badge, as opposed to the proof graphic in the inset. It has been just over a year since we started the grill badge project and found the German company Carl Poellath Münz und Prägewerk Schrobenhausen GmbH & Co. KG that makes possibly the best grill badges in the world. At least for German cars like our BMWs. (They have been in business since 1780.) In the time since first contact, we’ve exchanged plenty of emails, faxes, phone calls and yes we even managed a tour of their factory thanks to Thomas being in the right place at the right time on a trip to Germany. Progress to date is that we paid for the die costs and got initial samples made. The news is the samples are terrific. The grill badges are high quality precision die stamped, nickel plated, and then the colors are applied and the finish is baked, for a high quality baked enamel end product that will stand up to years of use on your car. We have in hand 3 proof samples (done in epoxy instead of baked enamel) so you can get an idea of what the finished product will look and feel like. Truly a high quality piece that you can proudly mount on your car or use to mount on a plaque in your den or what have you. Every member should buy one. 20 Ausblick Here are the order details you need to know: We need to order 100 pieces. The price is ¤ 29 (Euros) so depending on the exchange when we pay the bill, that should equate to about $45 CDN. The final price won’t be known until we are finished with importing them. We have orders for 44 units in hand so far. Thomas and Rolf will gladly take your order for one or more units, and we will set up an order and deposit option using our Karelo system. Be sure to ask to see the samples at an event, and we are sure you’ll want to order a grill badge for yourself. (Restricted to members only.) Actual size of the grill badge is 61 mm wide by 76 mm tall. They are 3 mm thick. This is no flimsy tin badge. Nickel plated with baked enamel finish is what we have chosen. They come with two attachment holes. Volume 6 No. 3 2003 The number of driving complaints we receive is on the rise. The people who are making them observe that since the end of the photo radar program driving behaviour on our highways has become visibly worse. They also lament the fact that when they attempt to follow the traffic rules they seem to be one of the few drivers out there that are trying to do things properly. The most common complaint involves the speed limit. Drivers say that when they try to follow it, the rest of the traffic seems to be zooming by as if they were standing still. Those that are stopped for speeding try to point to other traffic and complain that the other driver was going faster still. It doesn't seem to register that if they were following the limit, I would be dealing with the other driver that they are complaining about rather than them. Following too closely is probably the second common complaint. It is closely related to an inability to follow the speed limit as drivers attempt to bulldoze those ahead of them out of the way. Those that do allow proper following distance see it disappear as other drivers wedge themselves into the gap even though it is unlawful to change lanes when doing so would affect other traffic. Failure to signal weighs in at number three on the list. If you don't tell other traffic what you intend to do sufficiently in advance of doing it, how can they exercise courtesy to assist you or avoid you if you make a mistake? Put the cell phone down and use that hand to operate the signal lever, and check the bulbs regularly to see that they are working. To those drivers who try to obey the laws I encourage you to continue. You are part of the solution to the problems on our highways. To those that don't, you are part of the problem. You are also my job BMW Car Club of British Columbia security. Keep and eye on your rearview mirror, I'll be stopping by to say thank you.
