This year,
all the stars
come to Heritage.
Hollywood comes to Cape Cod this year as Heritage Museums
& Gardens features CUT! Costume and the Cinema. Make like a
squirrel at The Adventure Park at Heritage, or go automotive in
our exhibit of classic American cars. Explore outdoor sculpture
installations that take their cue from nature in Natural Threads,
and do it all in one day. Come explore what makes Heritage
Museums & Gardens one of the premier destinations on the
Cape — from our acclaimed gardens and gardening workshops by
expert horticulturists, to fun family events, a working carousel, and
programs you can’t find anywhere else.

History on Tap
Grab a drink and enjoy some fascinating and fun conversation with Heritage
Museums & Gardens Director of Collections and Exhibitions Jennifer Madden,
who will bring interesting objects from the Museum’s collection to share.

Join us for this co-sponsored event with Titcomb’s Bookshop to delve into the
home of the world’s most beloved bear. Kathryn Aalto—landscape designer,
historian, and writer—will discuss her book The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh:
A Walk through the Forest that Inspired the Hundred Acre Wood, featured on NPR’s All
Things Considered and a People Magazine Best New Book pick. Learn about plants,
animals, and places in the forest that was the inspiration for the children’s classic.
Book signing, coffee, and an opportunity to explore Heritage’s gardens follow the
discussion.

CUT! Costume and the Cinema
April 16–October 10
Who will you be wearing to a red-carpet opportunity to see movie costumes
worn by your favorite stars? Forty-three costumes are displayed with props,
cinematic backdrops, and film clips of some of your favorites. Be transported to the
streets of Paris, through the Caribbean, and to Venice as you view costumes worn by
Scarlett Johansson, Kate Winslet, Maggie Smith, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey, Jr.,
Keira Knightley, and more. The exhibition tour is organized by Exhibits Development
Group, USA in cooperation with Cosprop, Ltd., London, England.
Driven to Collect
April 16–October 10
Gentlemen, start your engines! This exhibit of cars showcases
our nationally significant collection. In the Collector’s Corner:
a 1934 Derby Bentley reminiscent of the cars, time periods,
and luxury represented in CUT! Costume and the Cinema, a
1955 MG TF 1500, and a special display of maps made from
recycled license plates, created by artist Stephen Blyth.

The Adventure Park at Heritage provides a new perspective on nature and the
opportunity to learn more about yourself and your environment. Explore five
different aerial “trails.” Beneath, the Forest Walk Interpretive Path awaits those who
love nature. It’s all part of the pursuit of outdoor learning and discovery that has
become a Heritage trademark.

Heritage’s social media sites! The fun continues in Hidden Hollow, with cinematicthemed activities.
Educator Open House

During this Open House for educators, you’ll learn how we can support your
teaching of science, math, art, and social studies. The evening features hands-on
demonstrations and opportunities to mingle and network with colleagues and

Even the most experienced gardeners can
be overwhelmed by the prospect of pruning
hydrangeas. Join Heritage Hydrangea Curator
Mal Condon to learn how to selectively prune
your plants to improve vigor, increase bloom
density, control height, and enhance ornamental
value. Tools, techniques, and timing are discussed
in this hands-on demonstration. Advance
registration is recommended, as the program
often sells out.

National Public Gardens Day

Get to know the people and plants that make Heritage one of New England’s top
public gardens as part of this annual celebration, presented in partnership with the
American Public Gardens Association. Sandwich residents enjoy free admission on this

by two hybridizers — Charles Dexter and Jack Cowles — contributed to the

This outdoor sculpture installation features the imaginative works of artists who link
their work to the Museum’s varied terrain. Rope, cord, textiles, branches, and other
materials encourage visitors to pay close attention to the landscape.

Cape Cod.

Under the Hood
Thursday, June 30: 6-7:30 pm
Meet Jack Rosen, an auto collector whose 1934 Derby Bentley, “Digby,” is featured
in the Collector’s Corner. He will share his personal collecting journey and discuss
his construction of the engine for his 2002 Ultima Can-Am racecar, which will be
on display exclusively for this program. This car has won its division and an Award of
Excellence two years running at the World of Wheels Annual Auto Show in Boston.
Jack will also discuss how the Bentley, a luxury car, compares to the Ultima, a speedy
racecar, and what drove him to collect two such different vehicles.

Inspired by the film Ever After, families jump into the story of Cinderella and
participate in activities that will take them through the plot—from creating
a vehicle to attending the ball to finding their lost slipper hidden somewhere
in the gardens. 11 am Performance: Upcycled Cinderella, by the Bright Star
Touring Theatre, is an imaginative telling of Cinderella. Sponsored by the Cape
Cod Media Group.
July 15: Beatrix Potter Day
Inspired by the film Miss Potter, families become nature explorers as they observe
and record the natural world. 11 am Performance: Toe Jam Puppet Band, with a
special performance about nature, conservation, and the insect world.
July 22: Great Detective Day
Inspired by the film Sherlock Holmes, families become part of a mystery, searching
for clues throughout the galleries and gardens. Create a decoder to find hidden
messages, and seek help from Mr. Holmes and Mr. Watson themselves.
11 am Performance: Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys, three-time
Parents’ Choice Award-winning artist and local rock stars to the young and
young at heart.
July 29: Never Neverland Day
Inspired by the film Finding Neverland, families will travel to Neverland, where
imagination stations abound. Join the Lost Boys and participate in activities that
remind us that imagination is the key to never growing up. 11 am Performance:

Lecture Series: The Evolution of Fashion
in Film
Sunday, July 10: 2-3 pm
Fashion is not just about the clothes, but about
the embodiment of a lifestyle. John Di Stefano,
fashion designer, historian, and Professor at
Massachusetts College of Art and Design, will
discuss the evolution of on-screen fashion from
the early movies of the 1920s to modern-day
blockbusters, examining the role that fashion
moguls and high-end designers have played in
creating the Hollywood scene.

Take a walking tour through the Heritage Hydrangea Display Garden and learn

Meet Dick Shappy, a classic car restorer and
avid collector who has worked on many cars
belonging to the rich and famous. He will share
his personal collecting story and discuss the
restoration of his 1922 Packard Twin Six Cape
Top, which will be on display exclusively for
this program. The Packard was the first-place
winner for Best Original Car at the Pebble Beach
Concours d’Elegance in 2014.

Family Fun Fridays
All Fridays in August: 9 am-5 pm
Enjoy a day at Heritage featuring special
activities related to CUT! Costume and the
Cinema. Performances, activities, games, and
family challenges make this a great start to the
weekend. Free with Museum admission.
August 5: Great Exploration Day
Inspired by the film The New World, families will enjoy Native American music,
dance, storytelling, and crafts throughout the gardens, led by members of the
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. 11 am Performance: Wampanoag Nation Singers
and Dancers, who will share Native dress, culture, and music.
August 12: Magic Meets Science Day
Inspired by the film The Prestige, families explore the magic of science.
11 am Performance: The Science of Magic by Mr. Fish, a renowned circus performer
and magician who will explore the secrets of magic using magnetism, light, air,
optical illusions, and much more. Sponsored by the Cape Cod Media Group.
August 19: Swashbuckling Day
Inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean films,
families will dance to calypso music and try to
find the hidden treasure! 11 am Performance:
Caribbean Carnival Celebration by Taino, an
exuberant performance with reggae percussion,
audience sing-a-longs, and plenty of
opportunities to get up on your feet and dance.
Also on August 19, 2-3 pm: The Pirate, the Princess, and the Pea: A Puppet Show
Crabgrass Puppet Theater presents a swashbuckling adventure full of sea
monsters, shipwrecks, pirates, and princesses. With colorful scenery, professional
puppetry, and original pirate songs, you won’t want to miss this fun adventure
tale. Show only: $10 Members, $12 Non-members
August 26: Masquerade Day

Inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, families will be
transported to the streets outside the Opera Populaire as they embark on an
opera hunt, and attend the masquerade ball! 11 am Performance: The Airborne
Comedians, an act that began 20 years ago as a snowball juggling contest in a
laundromat, and now has escalated to six- and seven-foot-high unicycles and lawn
chair juggling.

Sponsored by Arbella Insurance Foundation
Don’t miss this interactive program developed by
the Arbella Insurance Foundation to teach new drivers the dangers of distracted
driving, including texting while driving. The campaign features a 36-foot-long,
neon-yellow mobile classroom outfitted with high-tech driving simulators.
During the driving simulator training, teens and other new drivers face a number
of scenarios based on real-world examples, educating participants on how to
anticipate hidden hazards, react to the road, and avoid accidents. Participants
also complete the online portion of the curriculum at www.DistractU.com and
make a safe-driving pledge in order to complete the training. The Distractology
101 driving simulator, based on Arbella-funded research conducted with UMass
Amherst, travels to high schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode
Island, offering 45 minutes of simulated distracted driving to each participant. To
date, nearly 10,000 new drivers have completed the Distractology 101 training.

CUT! Costume and the Cinema
Lecture Series: Characters and Costumes
Sunday, August 21: 2-3 pm
Learn how characters are created for the silver screen
with Associate Professor Jennifer Varekamp, costume
designer and instructor at Massachusetts College of
Art and Design. Varekamp will explain the cultural and
social significance of fashion, highlighting the pivotal
role costumes play in telling a visual story on the silver screen through the use of
in-depth character analysis of famous actor/costume pairs represented in Heritage’s
special exhibit CUT! Costume and the Cinema. Sponsored by WBUR

Join the Halloween dance party with DJ Ooch,
go on a hayride, visit Hidden Hollow by night,
and enjoy themed refreshments from the
Magnolia Café. Come in costume and be part
of the fun! New this year: Meet characters from
the movies, craft your own fantastic mask, and
navigate your way through a maze! Participants
are advised to wear comfortable shoes to walk to all

Winterizing Hydrangeas
Saturday, November 19: 10:30-11:30 am
Hydrangea macrophylla are the least cold-hardy of hydrangea species and are hard
to keep alive during harsh Cape Cod winters. Heritage Hydrangea Curator Mal
Condon will provide information on protecting hydrangeas from the ravages of
winter. Fee: $10 Members, $15 Non-members
Gardens Aglow

Friday-Sunday, November 25-December 18: 4:30-8:30 pm
Join us for the celebration of lights that has become a holiday tradition. In addition to
the beautiful light displays throughout the gardens, the event features music and dance
performances at 6:30 pm in the Automobile Gallery. St. Nick will hold court in the
Model T. Gingerbread houses created by professional bakers and culinary students will
be on display, along with model trains and holiday décor ideas. People of all ages can take
a spin (or two) on the vintage carousel and roast marshmallows together at the fire pits.
Stroll the gardens with family and friends, and enjoy Heritage in a whole new light.
On Saturdays, Chip Koser of South Cape Ice Sculptures will demonstrate ice
carving. Visitors will see an ice sculpture created right before their eyes, and have
opportunities for photos with the sculptures.
Support for this event is provided by the Cooperative Bank of
Cape Cod and Rogers & Gray Insurance Company.
Fee: $15 Member Adults, $5 Member Youth, 2 and under free
