A Message from Mr. Shoji Hirao Dear Dealer, I am very glad to be in Canada to see and meet our valuable customers. This is the second overseas job assignment of my career. My first assignment was in the US, and I’m pleased to return to the North American market. Since my arrival, I have learned plenty of things about Canadian culture and customs, and I’ve met plenty of nice people along the way. Needless to say, I’ve enjoyed my time here so far! In early March we experienced a tragedy in Northern Japan caused by an incredible earthquake and tsunami. Due to this unfortunate incident, we’ve lost some employees at our Sendai Factory. We would like to express our deepest condolences to these victims and their families. During this time, we received plenty of words of encouragement from our dealers, and we appreciate this very much. Thanks to the support of many, the country of Japan is recovering, and our Sendai factory is once again up and running. Toyo tires Expands Toyo Tires has expanded their warehouse space at their Richmond, B.C. head office location. As of August 1st, 2011 they will acquire an additional 30,000 sq. ft., increasing the total floor space to 110,000 sq. ft. The addition improves efficiency and customer service for the 334 tire dealers, and 336 car dealerships serviced by the warehouse. “Expanding our facility shows our dealer network that we are committed to providing them with better stocking levels and better service standards”, said Dave Burry, Distribution Manager for Western Canada. The new floor space eliminates the need for outside storage, creating faster response times to fill customer orders. It also provides flexibility in terms of storage, thereby increasing efficiency by prioritizing stock. Toyo Tire Canada also has warehouses in Montreal and Toronto, in order to service both tire dealers and national accounts across the country. The Dealer Resources section of the website includes items such as the support site, promotional items and apparel site and the training site which gives dealers both advertising and product knowledge information. New for June 2011, Toyo Tires launched the point of purchase booking site as a part of the Dealer Resources section. The point of purchase booking site displays all of the coopable and nocharge point of purchase items such as brochures, posters and tire stands and enables dealers to place their orders direct with their local warehouse through an online order form. In addition to the standard POP items, dealers also have the option to book event display items such as tents, backdrops and flags. The event items do not cost anything to book and are ideal for dealer events such as tent sales or seminars. TALK TECH Welcome to Tech Talk with John! with JOHN I'm John, the "tech guy" over here at Toyo Tire Canada and I'll be using this column to provide you with practical and useful information and tips about tires. First up, storing tires! Since heat and exposure to the elements are the primary factors that influence a tire's aging process, drivers can prolong their tire's life by minimizing their impact. Here are some tips for storing tires that will not be used continuously: »» Do not store a vehicle with weight on its tires for extended periods of time. Long-term inactivity is more harmful to tires than short weekly drives that flex the tires and help maintain oil dispersion within the rubber compounds. »» DO NOT APPLY ANY TIRE DRESSINGS. Tire compounds are formulated to resist ozone cracking or weather checking. »» Keep the tires out of direct sunlight. The sun’s ultraviolet rays and radiant heat are detrimental to rubber. »» Place each tire in its own airtight plastic bag for storing. Avoid allowing any moisture and remove as much air as practical. Close the bag tightly and tape it shut. This helps to reduce oil evaporation. »» If tires are stored off the vehicle, but still installed on rims, the tire pressure should be reduced to approx 103 kPa (15 psi). summer2011 »» Place the tires in a cool, dry location. It is better to place tires in a dry basement than outdoors or in a hot garage or attic. The basement temperatures will tend to remain cooler and more stable, while out door, garage and attic temperatures will often become hot and face daily fluctuations in temperature. »» Keep the tires away from sources of ozone. Electric motors that use contact brushes generate ozone. Keep your tires away from the furnace, sump pump, etc. »» Ensure that the tires are re-inflated to their correct tire pressure according to the vehicle placard prior to re- installation or re-introduction to service. ON TRACK 2 TOYO ANNOUNCES NEW DEALERS AUDI & VOLKSWAGEN Earlier this year, Toyo Tires’ announced a new partnership with the Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. As of May 2011, each of the 134 Volkswagen dealers and 40 Audi dealers across Canada will have access to Toyo Tires’ full line of passenger and light truck tires. Volkswagen and Audi dealers can source tires through a local Toyo Tires dealer via the national account tire program. The Audi TT, TT-S, and TT-RS are currently equipped with the new Proxes T1 Sport as an original equipment tire. Toyo Tires’ complete line of premium replacement tires complements Volkswagen and Audi’s vehicle offerings. Depending on the model of Golf, Jetta or Beetle, the consumer may choose between the valueoriented Extensa and Eclipse lines or the premium, luxury-touring Versado and Tourevo lines. The Versado and Tourevo are the ideal fitments for the Volkswagen CC. Toyo Tires’ ultra-high performance Proxes family is suggested for Audi’s A and S model coupes and sedans as well as the TT, TT-S, TT-RS and R8 luxury sport coupes. Tires have always played a significant role in improving a car’s ability to be more environmentally friendly. Tires that are more fuel efficient and last longer really complement the technology that the manufacturer has put into the car to reduce their CO2 emissions. Last year, Toyo Tires' announced their Tecology initiative, which is the use of their proprietary technology to develop eco-friendly tires that still carry the highest standards for comfort, safety and performance. This year, they’ve put that initiative to action with the release of the new Versado Eco. 5 ON TRACK The Versado Eco is Toyo Tires’ newest addition to their Versado luxury all-season line and was developed specifically for hybrids and environmentally-friendly compacts. This eco-friendly all-season luxury tire provides a quiet and comfortable ride, while helping lower fuel consumption. Staying true to their commitment to the environment, Toyo Tires' designed the Versado Eco with environmentally friendly material in both the compound and carcass of the tire. Developed with a silica-based tread compound, the Versado Eco incorporates a product called green powder. Green powder, a naturally-derived material, reacts with the silica in the compound to disperse particles, thereby creating less friction and further improving treadwear and rolling resistance. The use of green powder in the compound is combined with current features found on the Versado luxury performance line that enhance performance and comfort. Wet and dry performance is improved through Toyo Tires' Multi-wave Sipe technology, which allows more tread to stay in contact with the road surface. To complement the silica-based compound, the tread pattern is built with a rigid rib design that improves rolling resistance and overall handling. Traditionally, a tires’ carcass is developed from freshly produced petroleum-derived fibers. Until now, recycled polyester has never been approved for use in tire manufacturing due to strict specification guidelines that make it necessary for the polyester to meet requirements in strength, adhesion to rubber, elasticity and fatigue resistance. Toyo Tires is one of the first manufacturers to develop a tire that utilizes recycled polyester fibers while meeting the strict guidelines required for tire development. They were able to incorporate recycled polyester into the new Versado Eco through the use of an summer2011 advanced recycling technology that chemically separates additives and colorants from polyester products like water bottles - an industry first. A process is put in place whereby the material can be purified to the extent where the quality is equivalent to that of petroleumderived polyester. Utilizing recycled polyester cord throughout the casing is just another way that Toyo Tires is able to demonstrate their commitment to minimizing their environmental impact during the manufacturing process. In the future, Toyo Tires will continue to utilize their Tecology initiative to develop and broaden their eco-friendly tire offering. Until then, the Versado Eco will be an excellent option to meet the needs of environmentally-friendly hybrids and eco- friendly compacts. Starting July 1, 2011 it will be available in nine sizes ranging from 15” to 18”, in T, H, V and W speed ratings. ON TRACK 6 Introducing the all new The release of Toyo Tires' latest addition to their winter passenger tire lineup will arrive this fall. Designed specifically for Canadian winters, the Observe GSi5 was crafted to perform in snow, slush and icy conditions while maintaining excellent wear life. It features Toyo Tires’ latest development in Total Control Sipe Technology (TCST) and was created using a new winter compound made partially of environmentally-friendly material. One of the objectives when designing the Observe GSi5 was to ensure that it helped provide traction in all directions, particularly in slick winter driving conditions. The Observe GSi5’s new tread design features Toyo Tires' Spider and Swing sipes, which provide added traction in all directions on both snow and ice. A shallower sipe, called First Edge, also provides extra traction when the tire is new. These sipes work in conjunction to form Total Control Sipe Technology. A feature called the Snow Claw, which is located within the tire grooves next to the tread block, provides traction in deep snow while also enhancing block rigidity and improving wet and ice traction. To help maintain control on rutted winter roads, the Observe GSi5 also features the Arrow Lift Buttress design which provides added tread grip. It’s located on the upper side of the tire, where the sidewall meets the tread pattern. The new silica compound of the Observe GSi5 provides excellent flexibility at low temperatures and features environmentallyfriendly carbonic bamboo powder and Toyo Tires’ Microbit Technology. Carbonic bamboo powder, which is a naturally derived material from bamboo charcoal, absorbs the water layer on top of the ice, thereby providing more traction and control. Microbit Technology features thousands of crushed walnut shells which are incorporated into the Observe GSi5 compound. Walnut shells are one of the hardest natural substances in the world and provide added control by scratching into ice. 9 ON TRACK summer2011 Toyo Tires is scheduled to release a new winter tire commercial this fall featuring the new Observe GSi5. The commercial incorporates the Engineered for the Real World campaign, which focuses on family-oriented activities as well as Toyo Tires’ safety, reliability and performance attributes for winter tires. The commercial, which is based on a family winter vacation, is set to air across Canada this fall and was developed in part with digital animation. Toyo TireS hosts journalists in japan 2011 is an exciting year for Toyo Tires with the launch of the new Versado Eco, Proxes T1 Sport and Observe GSi5. With journalists playing a pivotal role when launching new products, we decided to host a media trip to Japan to give them an inside perspective on our company and product line. The trip included both testing and information sessions. Japan isn’t the first place that comes to mind when testing tires for Canadian winters. But the Toyo Saroma Proving ground, located on the far northern island of Hokkaido, proved to be a worthy stage to showcase the new Observe GSi5. The testing track included stretches of snow, slush and ice that incorporated turning, slalom and braking tests. It was immediately evident to our journalists that the tire’s new Spider Sipe, Swing Sipe and bamboo-charcoal, silica compound were fit even for the harshest Canadian winters. The next portion of the trip involved a visit to the Toyo Itami Technical Centre, which is just a quick train ride away from the heart of Osaka. Acting as an R&D centre and information hub between global sales and manufacturing summer2011 subsidiaries, the Technical Centre was the perfect place to educate the journalists on our product offering and corporate background. The visit started off with a classroom session where the benefits of the Proxes T1 Sport, Versado ECO, Observe GSi5, Versado LX II, and Tourevo LS II were examined. The next portion was an interview with Mr. Takuji Yamamoto, General Manager of the Tire R&D Division. Mr. Yamamoto was diligent in describing Toyo Tires’ viewpoint in terms of technology, the ability to react quickly to market demands and the future of Toyo’s product line and eco-friendly initiatives. Plenty of information regarding Toyo Tires was dicovered over these two days and the trip was topped off with a stopover at the Osaka Auto Show, where Toyo Tires were placed on a variety of modified vehicles. Overall the journalists experienced a well-rounded overview of our product, company and the culture in which we were found! ON TRACK 10
